been telling me. i've been talking to them and just behind me, a very active investigation. you can see right now what you're looking at is police on scene placing evidence markers. this is where police told me a person was struck by a car. then they are diverting traffic east around jewell so just off to my right there's flares where they're diverting traffic as car with front end damage unknown if this car was involved. that's likely. police tweeted about this after 4:00 this morning. that's about when it happened. that's what officers here told me. a person was struck while crossing jewell sustaining serious injuries. they also say they're not looking for anybody so this is not a hit-and-run. the driver is actually cooperating with police this morning so that's good news. one person was trans ported to

investigate the scene. live in denver, jamie leary, cbs4 news. the latest on the campaign as donald trump is looking to get past more controversy comments made years ago regarding president obama. what the campaign did to move on past that birth issue. >> reporter: speaking to the washington post donald trump refused to admit the president was born in the united states and hillary clinton "america". this man wants to be our next president? when will he stop this ugliness and bigotry? >>reporter: later a senior advisor from the trump campaign released a statement saying the republican nominee does believe the president was born in the u.s. in february of last year before

morning are in the 40s especially in western colorado. ouray ray, 44 degrees with our weather watcher. satellite showing clear skies and sunshine as you get up and get going this morning. it's going to be a really comfortable day. 67 at noon and 72 is the high. there's a smij of a chance we could see a late day thunderstorms rolling through your neighborhood but it will be a long sho that. fairly dry and comfortable friday to look forward to. let's see if your traffic situation is something to look forward to. joel is keeping an eye on that. >> may your drive be dry and comfortable but not the case this morning near federal and jewell. jamie leary is live out there this morning collecting information. a serious auto pedestrian accident. police are saying this could be closed all morning.

sheridan and use that to access on to 6th avenue to the north there. if you're trying to get on i-25 get over to plat river drive and head up northbound along santa fe. that's a stretch sof road that just loads up so federal near jewell there's that closure in both directions. north of 285 along c-470 a few delays but all those delays westbound along 6th avenue the closure picked upnd of the way early yesterday afternoon in time for the evening commute and should be better this morning. an organized crime ring is targeting mothers in the metro area. thieves are taking checkbooks and making off with thousands of dollars. now police want to find this woman because they believe she could lead to more suspects. our jeff todd spoke with a recent victim. >> uts a pain.

her daughter off at this daycare when the thieves struck. >> they put the screwdriver in the hole and hit it with something and it by passed my alarm. >> reporter: the checks were cashed all over the metro area despite being reported as stolen. she's been a victim of the felony lame game. >> i found it on facebook. so i had to find out what happened to me and lady at the daycare center. >> they use the last drive through line at a bank to be lest visible to the teller and pass themselves off as the person in the identification of the person they stolen. >> a spike in cases like this have been seen since the beginning of the year. they hope someone recognizes this woman. for now many people feel like the banks are allowing the crime to continue. >> it's going to require the

it's too easy. they're cashing thousands of dollars and i'm sure they're doing what they're supposed to do but there needs to be another safeguard. >> we have spoken with several law enforcement agencies including the fbi. they saul say they have not heard of this crime this crime china launches a new space lab. it will be capable of holding two chinese astronauts while orbiting the earth. in mid october there will be another launch to send the astronauts to the space lab. they want to put a permanent spacemaned lab in service by

hena daniels shows us the new heroin addictions in america. >> reporter: with the heroin and opioid epidemic killing hundreds of americans every day, the obama administration is renewing its strategy to fight the public health crisis. they are calling for law enforcement to identify links between overprescribing doctors and distribution networks across the country. prosecutors are being urged to

across state lines. loretta lynch told u.s.a today there's no magic bullet. . . west virginia, new mexico, new hampshire, kentucky and ohio had america's five deadliest rates of deaths. the president spoke about the epidemic in march. >> the only way we reduce thinking about this as a public health problem and not just a criminal problem. >> reporter: according to usat today the justice department directive will be sent to 94 u.s. attorney offices next week. >> health experts say the heroin epidemic is partially to blame on the rise of prescription painkillers. the number of americans dying

risen also. so let's get a check of weather and traffic every ten minutes on the 4's. good morning, a big bright harvest moon there on the west said of town. probably within the hour we'll fall behind the mountains. craig sent this shot in from high lands ranch this morning. 45 in akron and colorado springs at 51. 33 in aspen. boulder at watcher in littleton is coming in at 46. thunderstorms across eastern colorado in the evening. this was at 5:00. this storm in burlington dumped 1-2-inch diameter hail over the area before it moved out. behind it we're kind of calmer and cooler this morning as drier air is filtering in. you can see that here on the

lingering around the rockies keeping us on the cool side. once we get in the weekend, high pressure moves in temperatures come back and the 80s will return. here's the futurecast for today. starting out sunny and one or two isolated storms get going in the mountains so a slight chance of those moving into the denver metro area later this afternoon. it's a long shot if you get much measurable rain out of that. today temperatures in the 70s and 60s. we may make it to in lamar. our highs in denver, 72 degrees and a slight chance of late day storm. tomorrow we boost it up to 77. same deal with an isolated storm possible in the afternoon and then the 80s come back. 85 on sunday with mostly sunny skies and keep that trend going into monday and tuesday as well. by the way, up in the high country the colors are changing there almost about a week early this year but they're really vibrant up there so you may want to get going this weekend.

easy to be distracted by the changing colors but stay focused on the road. this morning a traffic alert we're following at federal and jewell. the intersection is closed off due to an auto pedestrian accident. the man that was hit is in serious condition so they have this extended investigation going on. jamie leary is there at the scene giving us updates coming up in a few minutes. this is federal the north and southbound direction from evans out to florida, it's a no-go drive. so head over to sheridan or on to plat river drive to access santa fe in the northbound direction to get on to i-25. sheridan is probably your better option there. here we are across the denver metro area. c-470 slowing in the westbound direction in the southeast direction as they continue to do road work along there. slowing along 285 in the

way out to conifer this morning. typical this time of day. great drive times coming from the west in the eastbound direction. i-70 eastbound c-470 to i-25 speeds into the 60s. right now the jets are celebrating the win over their former head coach after beating the bills last night in new york. jets up six in the 4th. his third touchdown of the game, fini and bills keep it close. they score late on an 18-yard pass to bring them within six. they had one last chance to come back but time runs out. 36-31, the final. next thursday night it's the texans and patriots right here on cbs4. the chicago cubs couldn't win their division at home so it was up to a cardinals loss and giants win last night for a play

phoenix at 102. there that's a cool down for them. 80 in kansas city. dc should be 85. if there's any area that has severe weather it looks like later this afternoon new mexico and into north texas here and oklahoma could have severe storms and maybe some parts of minnesota picking up severe storms with cooler air running into the areas. that's the slow down if there is any at all. here in denver we're looking at a high of 7 very comfortable for this time of year. >> no reason to leave denver. head up to the high country and do leave peeping. a portion of federal and jewell shut down this morning. they're forcing all the cars there to the right. robert sanchez was at the scene with jamie leary this morning. an update coming up with them in a few minutes. down near pena boulevard, it's a great drive.

jamie leary is live at federal and jewell where this accident happened that has shut down the intersection. >> reporter: the intersection is still closed this morning. traffic is picking up and a lot of police still on scene. they have road flares diverting traffic east down jewell this morning as they continue their investigation. it was after 4:00 this morning when denver police tweeted out the information. you can see there's a small vehicle with front end damage that they're actually taking pictures of. it's parked on the side of the road. this is not a hit-and-run. the driver involved remained on scene for questioning so that's the good news. however, there was a person trans ported to the hospital with serious injuries. police were placing evidence markers along federal and we're told that person, a man, was
