we start cbs4 news at 6:00 tonight with breaking news. a three-alarm fire blasts through an apartment complex in arapahoe county. >> many people have been burned out of their homes tonight. our lauren dispirito and our team of journalists brought you the story. so lauren, what's the latest? >> on those three people were hurt, one of them, a firefighter. two others at this complex. we're told they've all been treated for smoke inhalation. now all three of those floors here, we're told by fire investigators had smoke and flames showing when crews first got on scene. that meant their first mission was search and rescue, going inside the building, seeing if there was anyone trapped that

here. structural damage that made it too dangerous. they say, so far there have been about 75 firefighters on scene, fighting this fire. they don't think that anybody inside was unable to make it out. i spoke with a 10-year-old boy who says he had just gotten home from school when he saw this fire start. >> i was afraid and sad because i saw people crying and i sort of thought, well, there might be som -- and it was on both sides of the building, so i was kind of paralyzed. >> reporter: he was able to get himself to safety okay. >> we talked with investigators who say because fire and flames and smoke were showing on all three floors, it's hard to know where this fire began. we also know that the red cross has been pulled in, because

place to sleep tonight. no word yet on those people. no new information on how they're doing tonight. live in arapahoe county, lauren dispirito, cbs4 news. and right now, a search for vandals shooting out car windows in littleton. cbs4's tom mustin in littleton, and a lot of angry car owners after this. >> reporter: police don't have any hard, faum they say it's happening all across the south metro area. a family's already fixed the window here, but if you look close to the tail light, you can see where it was shot out. this stale ball handle was found. littleton police say finding these shooters may be easier said than done. happy to be home with her

littleton light rail station. >> we're really lucky there was no one in my car at the time. >> reporter: last week, mandy and her husband parked her 4 runner at the station to go to the broncos game. when he returned someone shout at the back window. >> reporter: similar incidents have been reported at trailheads. the weapons vary from bb guns to pellet guns. littleton police no consistent pattern, and the criminals are most likely juveniles. pictures show the bullet hole that sent broken glass cascading across mandy's backseat. >> it was scary. i thought this was a safe place to park. >> reporter: in mandy's case, nothing was taken from the car, but the young mother says the damage cost several hundred dollars. mandy says she's telling her

aware. >> i would really like this to the be something that does not happen to someone else's family. >> reporter: mandy has a message for the elusive bandits. >> think of a better way to have fun. >> reporter: this is very much, a random crime, but police say there are some things you can do to protect yourself. namely, always protect in a well lit area and take valuables from your vehicle. now new details on denver police put the hospital campus on look down friday, after someone reported herring gunshots. police say they did not find any shell casings, or really any evidence that shots were fired at the hospital. two people did report seeing someone outside with the rifle. police say surveillance video appears to show someone outside with the weapon. they say what some people thought were gunshots might

lockdown. a judge sentences a driver for a deadly hit-and-run in lakewood. jonathan cordova was drunk. police say it was his 6th dui. the victim, 45-year-old ernestine mains lost her life. live over the jefferson county courthouse. cordova now facing up to 43 years in prison. >> reporter: karen, jonathan cordova appeared before the same judge in the when he was pleading for probation following his fifth dui. today the judge called mr. cordova a danger to society, and sentenced him to 22 years in prison. 53-year-old cordova pleaded guilty. he has a lengthy dui history, as well as other driving violations and manslaughter.

around midnight on december 3 last christmas, or christmas time, i should say, when he hit ernestine maines. today, her daughter said she forgives the man who killed her mother, and says she would have rather seen him receive mandatory treatment than jail time. >> my mom wouldn't have wanted that. my mom was a very person. they're going to lose their dad. you know? i already lost my mom. what honestly is them losing their dad going to do? it's not going to bring my mom back. >> reporter: and before issuing this sentence, the judge did say that mr. cordova likely has a very kind heart when he is sober, but again, she has a job, and that is to protect this community. so she says rather than putting

would have killed someone, so she sentenced him to prison. kelly, thank you. michael bennet says he would not debate his challenger on cbs4. >> it would give voters a chance to really see both our poling specialist shaun boyd is here to explain why it won't happen. >> reporter: it was to be an hour long debate in our studio, with pre and post-coverage as well. it arguably would have given the candidates, the widest exposure of any senate debate in the state. but incumbent michael bennet apparently wants to limit his

opportunity not to be passed up. in fact, only once in cbs4 history has a candidate declined to debate an opponent on our air. mark udall, locked in a close race with cory gardner said no. now senator michael bennet is following his lead. but bennet is not in a close race. >> incumbent. >> reporter: dick adams, a republican, suggests bennet is running out the clock. >> i'm sure he's confident that he doesn't need to do this debate. but what does that say about senator bennet and his commitment to talking about all the issues to voters? >> reporter: they took him to

saying he is depriving coloradans an important opportunity. >> he doubled down on his support for the iran nuclear deal, and continued to support the affordable care act, and he did not receive a favorable response. >> reporter: cbs4 analyst, pen field tate, a democrat says both candidates have let voters down. >> th in equal esteem or fault with the voters. >> reporter: voters are the real losers here. a live debate is the one opportunity voters see candidates go toe to toe without a media filter. when i asked bennett's communication director for the reason behind his decision, he gave me a statement that simply attacked glen for not doing the denver post debate. so we still don't know why he's

>> reporter: it really is unfortunate. the federal government wants to round up, and remove wild horses. today, that controversy landed in a federal courtroom in denver. in a moment, what both sides are saying about the plan. >> and just a few scattered clouds across the state, but that could change, and there's a reason for it. hurricane down here off baja california, pushing all its moisture now toward arizona, and then toward colorado. i'll tell you when it gets here coming up. >> and we continue to a fire destroys three floors of this apartment building at east yale and ulster. two people inside suffered smoke inhalation. emergency workers transported one firefighter with injuries. crews have knocked out most of those flames and the red cross

developing now, a new initiative will address a large increase in drug overdose deaths in colorado. today, attorney general cynthia coffman talked about the colorado naloxone for life initiative. it will train law enforcement

it reverses the effects of an overdose. colorado saw a 60% increase in drug overdose deaths. the counties were also beginning a rescue kit. they include adams, clear creek, and pueblo counties. should the u.s. government round up and remove wild horses from public land? >> we told you about a round up last year. a federal judge in denver heard arguments in morning. the first involves whether or not the bureau of land management can use requests by private landowners to come in and remove wild horses that come onto their property. >> well, we're in court today to defend the wild horses of wyoming from a concerted assault on their freedom. >> there's public land to the south, public land to the

fenced so the sources will keep coming back to public land. it's a very difficult program to manage. >> in the second case, suing to remove hundreds of federally owned horses. rulings on both cases should come soon and could have major implications on future horse round ups in colorado. already ed, a really toasty day today. >> toasty indeed. 90degrees. could see it again tomorrow. could se clouds around here. that's all we're seeing on doppler 4000 right now. we do have showers to the northwest, up into the great lakes region, along the eastern seaboard. because the stationary front just laying there. then we see some moisture moving into the southwest. that's because we have a hurricane. it is a hurricane paine. it is a category 1. but you can

week. overlooking dillon reservoir, which you see way back over there. we also have this from pitkin lay trail. this is a new shot. this is bear lake, you can just see the lake right down in there. as we take a look at the lows for tonight, mild, mostly in the 50s, over the eastern plains. 30s, 40s, for the higher elevations. tomorrow, another hot one for the east. we'll see 80s to the mid-90s for the eastern plains. out west, temperatures will be mostly in the 80s. here is your denver forecast. for tonight, clear skies with the lows near that 60-degree mark. then for tomorrow, sunshine giving way to those increasing clouds, but right around that 90-degree mark again. for the next several days, start a gradual cool down. 84 on wednesday. then we'll add an isolated storm for thursday, friday, and saturday, with 87 thursday. friday, at 76, look at

well the denver broncos going to be without demarcus ware for 4 to 5 weeks accoin to gary kubiak. ware fracturing his arm during yesterday's win over the colts. ware colliding with the knee. ware left on the play and did not return. ray, of course, had the touchdown to seal the game yesterday. speaking of touchdowns, the broncos scored just one on their four trips inside the red zone. that is something they'd like to improve on.

a manhunt for the suspect in the accused bombings in new york and new jersey is over. >> that's because police arrested amad khan rahami. he since saturday's bombings. 29 people were hurt in new york. the motive for the attacks still unclear. but new york's mayor is calling them acts of terror. new tonight, three surfers expected to recover after getting bitten by sharks in separate attacks within just three hours. all the attacks happened near an area of the beach known for shark activity. afterwards, beach officials did tell everyone to stay out of the water above their knees.
