crews checking back yards in the green mountain area look for leftover weapons. military munitions are from practice that happened there between 1912 and the '30s. >> this is the first time crews are going into people's yards. the search affects homeowners in green mountain estates and the mesa view kelly werthmann is checking in live from golden. and did sounds like crews have been busy. >> reporter: for the past several weeks, crews have been going to these homes, getting permission from homeowners to have access to their yards. about 60% gave the go-ahead. now they're searching for comloifbs underground -- explosives underground. >> using metal detectors to detect subsurface metal

neighborhood lie a variety of metals. and and each yellow flag marks an item of interest. >> most of this is probably gonna be names. >> reporter: but some may indicate a military explosive. >> it is possible. and that's what we're trying to find out. >> reporter: the nearby hayden park on green mountain was used by the national guard in the early 1900's for artillery training. last year an investigation organized by the department of defense found park that had to be destroyed. now investigators want to determine if there are any hazardous items in this decades-old neighborhood. >> why warrant this done -- wasn't this done before this neighborhood was built? >> it goes back to how the government turned over property in the past. and the mistakes that were made at that point. >> reporter: the government-contracted crews will spend the next couple weeks marking yards before eventually

explosives. even though the yellow flags are littering these lawns now, it may not be as bad as it looks. >> i do not believe we're going to find anything that poses an explosive hazard. >> reporter: and those yellow flags are gone now because crews are able to map that out. officials are doing this because it's better to be safe than sorry. some neighbors we did talk to off-camera believe this is just a waste of taxpayer dollars. digging, if it needs to happen in some of these yards, couldap couple weeks. kelly werthmann, cbs4 news. the search for a driver who may have caused the death of a cyclist last night near the entrance to carter lake in larimer county. troopers sate driver of a white sedan and small suv bumped the cyclist, jason holden, causing him to fall off the bike. he was hit by another car and died. the first driver left the scene.

the latest on a 71-year-old woman attacked by a teenager as he tried to help. she picked up a group of hitchhikers monday night in boulder canyon. this teenager here, jeffrey collins, later beat her. there is an active warrant out for his arrest. tom mustin live at boulder community hospital tonight where that victim is recovering. deputies do believe this teenager is dangerous. >> reporter: we knowha jeffrey collins had a previous record, after the attacks he went home, went to school and talked to his probation officer as if nothing had happened. and his apparent as have left that 71-year-old woman fighting for her life here in a hospital. >> i'm in apno over what's happened with her >> reporter: boulder county resident donna gayle is still stunned after the brutal attack on her neighbor, 71-yea.

>> reporter: monday night she picked up three teenaged hikers including jeffrey collins near her home on left-hand canyon drive. she brought them to her mountain cabin to wait for their ride. >> you can't be lost in this canyon without five people stopping to help. >> reporter: the three teens have been camping in the area. inside the home without warning, collins struck her with a fire poker causing massive head injuries and multiple fractures. >> at one point there was some talk between --y of possibly stealing her car. the others did not like that idea. but as it came as a surprise, the suspect blouft struck her in the head. >> reporter: -- collins has a priest records in colorado. he fled the scene and hitchhiked up the canyon. his friends ran to a neighbor's house to get attack. >> just a tragedy of some someone being repaid we kindness this way. and how everyone is

should be considered dangerous. donna says she and her neighbors will keep their doors locked until he's found. >> i'd like to see the book thrown at him. >> reporter: tonight katie culpa is in the icu in serious condition. her family has set up a go fund me page. collins is still on the run. if you have any information, call the boulder county sheriff's office. an update on a grass fire that got too close for comfort to some hokes in parker -- homes in parker. there was concern the flames would reach the homes but fire crews got a quick handle over, kept it to 3 acres. no injuries. two construction workers are recovering after a nier a high-rise downtown. the building downtown, 15th and california.

on the 5th floor, sending out an awful lot of smoke seen all over downtown. police shut down streets and the nearby light rail. denver firefighters made quick work of the flames. a report of shots fired put four schools on lockdown early this morning. it turned out to be an attempted robbery at 32nd and clay. everything back to normal by 11:00. but have not released any information on exactly who. denver police will be firing shots in the montbello neighborhood on purpose. it's to test out the shot-spoper system. the tech -- shot-spotter system. it high pressure system identify when shots really are fired. andrea flowes has what everyone in -- flores has what everyone in that neighborhood needs to know tonight

montbello will hear gunfire there. is no reason to worry, it's all part of a test designed to keep communities safe. from 8:00 to midnight tonight, denver police will be pulling the trigger in montbello. >> we are getting to locations where people just aren't calling in shots fired in the neighborhood. when they do call in, generally they're about a block and a half off of dpd says alerts bring them within 25 meters of a crime scene, allowing them to respond in less than a minute. >> he's helping us get to victims, suspects on occasion, and the evidence, the indicatings left on the scene. >> reporter: and dpd says residents tend to calm their

pressure tracks into the northern and central rockies. behind it, a cold front will sweep into colorado, sometime late thursday into early friday, bring enough cold air that some of our western mountains may pick up a little light snow as we head into the weekend. >> reporter: out here live, we're at the georgetown overlook. and the i-70 corridor from idaho springs to the tunnels is amazing right now with fall color! it's light rain showers on radar. and they are rolling toward denver. unfortunately they fizzle with all that dry air you have down there. but this is just an appetizer to the big weather change brewing, starting tomorrow. >> right you are, chris! we're gonna see a big change. a few scattered showers now. but we're watching a cold front to the north! it's gonna come down, sweep through the area. yesterday was 90. it could be 30 degrees colder! >> colorado police department

colorado springs police is changing the way its crimes are reported in an effort to help with its staffing issues. starting on sunday, some crimes like property theft will only be reported online. other crimes can only be reported over the phone. if your home is broken into, service officers, not patrol officers, will be the ones to respond. >> it does increase the respse up for something faster, that would be an improvement. >> he wants to free up officers for emergencies. police will continue to respond to active crimes where the suspect is on the scene in all emergencies. colorado considering allowing post traumatic stress disorder to be treated with pot f. so colorado would join 18 other states that already consider ptsd a condition legally treatable by marijuana. >> the state's medical pot law

treatment. but a state panel of lawmakers say the legislature shall consider it. >> reporter: veteran greg duran suffers from post traumatic stress disorder and uses pot to treat his siments symptoms, just not -- symptoms, something not legal under current colorado law. >> we're not gonna give up. >> reporter: he can buy recreational pot, but not medically. >> we've tried everything under the state guideline, under the medical board. but we keep getting denied. >> reporter: after several failed attempts to get that changed, sprpz of medical pot for ptsd are going back to state lawmakers. in committee today, supporters testify this issue is not going away. >> we have been fighting to get ptsd added to the list of qualifying conditions for how many years now? >> i'm gonna say flat out,

>> reporter: they do i understand the police of sufferers and scientists to add ptsd to the list of eight other conscience already approved for medical marijuana treatment. they haven't changed that position. >> there is insufficient medical evidence that marijuana is an effective treatment. >> reporter: 2017 is looking like pot issues will again be a major fight inside the capital. the ptsd medical pot bill will be discussed session. new information on the effort to reduce traffic near pop urm trails in springs. double parking fees at the base of the trail and the famous climb. park will go from $20 a day to $-- $10 to $20 effectively immediately.

rush hour traffic this morning. a mamma moose and her calf ran through town near the pinewood village apartments. bruce mccowan is a maintenance worker there. he sent us this video of the pair after checking out the complex. the two headed back to the forest. papa moose followed a few minutes later.
