. good thursday morning, i'm britt moreno. this is the news on this thursday, september 22nd. >> i'm alan gionet. here's what's happening on cbs4 morning news. they started shooting bullets at us and throwing tear gas and this guy got hurt. >> another night of violence in charlotte, north carolina, as the city it now under a state -- is now under a state of emergency. donald trump makes a campaign stop in cleveland. at the police involved shootings recently. >> live from colorado's news channel, this is cbs4 morning news. and this morning, summer is over. let's get a first look at the forecast. >> it's time for the pumpkin spiced lattis, as people like to say, fall is here. lauren is here to talk about it. >> sweater weather will arrive this weekend, and ahead of our next system, winds are going to crank up for the western side of the state and into parts of

we have high wind warnings. we may see gusts covering the western side of the state up to about 60 to 65 miles per hour. that can be damaging wind. let's check in with joel. luckily the only thing we're talking about this morning right now is construction. nice and wide open. of course we've got mississippi that's shut down as you get just to the east of santa fe out to broadway. you may be moved out of the way. i don't know. construction every time i think it's done, they bring out a whole new set of cones. we have more violence in the city of charlotte, north carolina, as police say a civilian was shot during more protests. that person is in critical condition, and the city is in a state of emergency. our reed binon has the latest. >> i'm asking for calm. >> the mayor of charlotte, north carolina, calling for peace as anger grows over the

scott. the second night of protests in charlotte was destructive, and bloody. one person hospitalized in critical condition on life support after being shot. authorities say by another civilian. as night fell, protesters remained out in force, police deploying flash bang devices and tear gas. the report echoing through the downtown streets. protesters hurling the canisters back at chaos. oh, wow. also on a few occasions getting overtaken by it. one cnn correspondent knocked to the ground. in the middle of it all some protesters worked to calm things down. >> i'm trying to prevent people from being hurt. my brothers are out here, too. >> reporter: despite the efforts, several were injured in the unrest. the state's governor declaring

he's initiated efforts for the national guard. >> we cannot tolerate violence, the destruction of patrol, and the attacks toward our police officers. that's not the american way. >> reporter: i'm reed binon reporting. this morning in colorado, police want to find 16-year-old jeffrey collins. have a look at this photo. he's wanted for an attack on a 71-year-old woman. collins is wanted for attempted murder. police say monday night, 71- three teenage hitchhikers including collins. she invited them into her mountain cabin in boulder county to wait for a ride after the three teens were stranded after a reported weekend hike. now, that is when collins attacked kulpa with a fireplace poker. >> at one point there was some talk between by our suspect of possibly stealing her car. the others did not like that idea but came as a surprise our suspect out of the blue struck

>> there was a maddening delay of getting his photo out because he is a juvenile. police consider collins armed and dangerous. his family tells us he has been in and out of trouble with law enforcement. katie kulpa's son set up a go fund me page to help with medical bills. people have raised $12,000 of the $20,000 goal. i put a link on my facebook page this morning. >> that's an upsetting story. 5:04 this thursday morning. let's get a check on weather and traffic. 53 degrees here in denver. 55 in boulder. 56 in burlington, 58 up in craig. now we are in our final hours of summer. fall officially starts at 8:2 # this morning. we have -- 8:21 this morning. we have very thick fog in sedgwick county. on the eastern plains be cautious. it's pretty bad. we have had rain this morning. we have died down a bit for the moment, and we will have a mixture of sunshine and clouds this morning.

slight chance for rain coming in this afternoon and into the evening hours. we'll talk more about that in our next system in a moment. joel is tracking drive. along i-25 and arapahoe road, not too bad. tomorrow and over the weekend, this is a tough spot. you have the full closure of arapahoe underneath i-25, and various lane restrictionings. see the old bridge to the left, that has to go. southbound, speeds into the 60s. a great drive. 9 minutes to 120th. and the top portion of your screen should be a great drive. pockets of volume. nothing is going to slow you down. disengage the cruise control. here we are across the denver metro area, along i-225 in the southbound direction, a 3- minute drive, northbound, from mississippi, to i-70, a 4- minute drive. out to the airport this morning, i-25 to 225 that's

crews are searching neighborhoods for old military exemployeesives. the -- explosives. the munitions left mind from artillery practice, up until the 2nd world war. the statesman working to clean them up over the past few years, they explode them when they find them. this is the first time they are going into people's yards. >> the vast majority of these houses are not going to have any ti we may find some munitions related material. i do not believe we're going to find anything that poses an explosive hazard. >> the government contracted crews will spend the next couple of weeks marking yards before they eventually dig for possible explosives. new this morning, a u.s. military fighter jet crashed off the japanese island of okinawa overnight. the pilot managed to eject himself and was rescued by u.s. air force helicopter.

air force base. it's not clear if there were more people on the jet or what caused the crash to happen. the presidential candidates are just four days away from the first debate, and they are already weighing in on the police involved shootings in oklahoma and north carolina. hillary clinton called the incidents quote unbearable yesterday. donald trump called for a nationwide stop and frisk policy to prevent crime and had this response to shooting. >> to me it looked like he did everything you're supposed to do. this young officer, i don't know what she was thinking. i don't know what she was thinking, but i'm very very troubled by that. >> yesterday, trump was also asked about finally admitting president obama was born in the united states. he said he wanted to quote get on with the campaign. also healed this morning, the tool helping breast cancer patients keep their hair during

welcome back, everyone. there is a way for breast cancer patients to undergo chemotherapy and keep their hair. it's the first scalp cooling system that minimizes hair loss. health specialist kathy walsh reports on the digny cap. >> chemotherapy is fighting lynn pad get's breast cancer, and lynn is fighting the side effects. >> i was supposed to be bald any 12th day of treatment. >> this is lynn ten days into chemo, and here she is after

hair, and it's been very empowering. >> reporter: this technology at the uc health lone tree breast center gave that choice. computer controlled scalp cooling, cool coolant that never drops below the freezing point, circulates in the camp. >> the chemotherapy is not going to the hair follicles and we are able to preserve the hair. >> reporter: oncologist dr. regina brown knows that's important to patients. for lynn it was the one thing she could control. >> i didn't want sad eyes. i didn't want people going, look, there's something wrong with her, she doesn't have hair. >> reporter: at treatment 14, lynn has kept all of her hair, but she's never lost it all. >> to have hair on my head, it just brings a smile to my face every day.

reporting. digny cap can cost hundreds of dollars a treatment. the goal is to get it to $25 each time. funds raised are being used to make that happen. you can support the american diabetes association, by tour de de cure. a family friendly ride. and 50k, and 100k route as well there's a 5k fun run/walk route. some call tour de cure a life changing event. >> everybody out there is riding or running for a reason. the people that join us are participants aren't just out there because it's a cool bicycle ride, which it is, but everybody is wanting to give back and do more to improve the lives of those people who are affected by the disease.

towards the great basin later today, and tomorrow is hovering over utah and it lifts up a little bit to the north as we head towards the weekend. the cold front that comes through with that on friday night is really going to knock down our temperatures, and it's also going to bring us the chance for some snow into the high country. snow levels could drop to 8000 feet for the first time this season. ahead of this system, winds are going to crank up for the western side of the state. we have high wind warnings, the yellow mustard color on screen. the brown is the wind advisories. winds could gust between 60 and 65 miles per hour. could be damaging winds in areas. be extra careful out there today and tomorrow. and unfortunately that means some of the leaves may rip off the trees that we have beautiful fall colors. hopefully we have some left for the weekend. let's take a look at future cast. we have rain throughout northwestern corner, later this morning and into the early afternoon. here in denver, we'll have

yesterday. some isolated showers possible to roll through this afternoon and evening. could get a couple more tonight. rain possible out to the west, throughout the evening hours, and tomorrow, still have a chance for showers in denver, though it doesn't look like much on future cast, and a better chance of moisture coming in on saturday with the front. that's moving on through. temperatures today, 85 in denver. 80 in greeley. 89 out in burlington. 77 in eagle. 76 in aspen, and 83 over in grand junction. the first day of fall is today. 81 tomorrow. a slight chance for storms. a bigger cool down this weekend. could get a few isolated storms and dryer on sunday but still a few storms possible. low 60s, joel. a new normal is coming. i-25 and 104th as you make your way in the southbound direction. we have seen pockets of volume out there. nothing that's going to slow you down too bad. speeds into the 60s.

120th to i-70. take a look from our cbs4 mouse trap cam. you can see the volume we have heading in the eastbound direction into town, and westbound as you make your way to golden. across the denver metro, the trouble spot along the mississippi, closures in the east of santa fe. i-225, all nice and wide open. here we are as you come from the east, southbound along i- 225, still looking at great speeds into the 60s. 50s and 60s both directions between a visit from curious moose checking out apartments this week on mother moose your calf ran through town near the pinewood village apartments. and a maintenance worker sent the video of the pair passing through. after they checked out the complex and decided it was apparently not for them, they headed back to the forest. pop up moose followed a few minutes later. new information in an effort to

the city council will double the parking fees, from 10 bucks a day to 20 bucks a day effective immediately. nearby street parking will also double. city leaders are hoping visitors will park in the free lot and use the free shuttle. >> that is not an easy hike. misty copeland shattered diversity barriers by becoming the first principal ballet dancer for the ballet company i asked her what she thinks about the movement on the football field with recently athletes kneeling during the national anthem. >> i think that it's important for us to be individuals and to be able to stand up, you know, for what we believe in, and as americans we should have that right. you know, i think that what america is supposed to stand

-- if you look back 50 years, a diligent analyst who crunched the numbers and investigated a publicly traded company could routinely outperform the stock market. the industry involved, information became ubiquitous and now it's nearly impossible to beat the market. the most recently evidence shows in a ten year investment horizon, about 90% of actively managed u.s. funds fail to beat fees are eating into theirerer returns. by the way, here's another problem -- their returns. by the way, here's another problem, the fund that beat the index change. if it beats last year, it's not likely it will do so next year. >> so what is the answer for all of us, then, jill. >> it's so easy. index or passive funds are an investors best friend.

love. thank you. let's get to weather and traffic. here's lauren with the latest on the last day of summer. at least the last fleeting moments here. >> we have about three hours left of summer. it officially ends at 8:21 this morning. taking a look at what's happening across the country. could get big storms in southern minnesota, northern iowa, flooding is an issue in the area, and we have our next system in the pacific northwest making its way in. we are looking at heavy rain in idaho, montana, wyoming today, and they could see a couple inches in areas, areas. could see a foot of snow with the system moving through. we won't get anything like that, and still hot into the southeast, and into the northeast, temperatures in the 90s, in the 80s, a lot more mellow out that direction, and cooler in phoenix. only 88 degrees. let's check with joel. how is the morning drive going. >> it's going great. i-70 the elevated portion of the highway, you're going to have company out there, but nothing that's going to slow you down. as a matter of fact, take a
