rescuers run a rare late-night search for an injured hiker. it's in genesee park near the buffalo overlook along i-70. stan bush is there right now. searches are typically called off at dark. apparently they really want to find this woman. >> reporter: they still think there's a good chance to find her. around 6:45, a woman in her mid to late 20s was hiking alone in this area. she reportedly got hurt on the trail and had fallen off where she was injured. she was able to text her husband until her phone went silent. this is not a hard area to hike but it is a very difficult area to search especially at night because the area is huge. and it is up and down. and because cell coverage is so bad, it's impossible for searchers to ping her phone.

north toward highway 6. there are about 40 search and rescue personnel on the ground but the search was made harder because the cell coverage is bad and because it is so windy above where we're at. so theyor foot and using night vision to search this area. a very challenging area to search. we're hoping to get an update in a few minutes. a breaking story in washington state. four people are dead after a shooting at a shopping mall. this is in burlington about an hour north of seattle. police believe the gunman left the mall and now on the run. and emergency crews believe there might be more victims inside that they haven't

knew his victims or if this was a random attack. a weather alert and the first winter weather advisory of the season! it's been showing at arapahoe basin for most of the day today. chris spears is on loveland pass. seems like we went from summer to winter! >> reporter: no kidding, karen! me personally, just a few hours ago, 80 degrees in castle rock near a fire, now i'm with you on top of loveland pass! wh you can see over my shoulder, we have had some accumulation, fairly minor. maybe about an inch. steak a look at this. the drive -- take a look at this, the drive up, rob mcclure and myself, loveland pass, it was treacherous in a couple of spots! enough that cdot put a chain law out for loveland pass for the night.

according to cdot, crews are in the second phase of this project, and we'll be bringing down that old i25 bridge. you'll also want to be ready for some closures along i-25. they recommend taking the dry creek or orchard exit to get across i-25. this is gonna reopen e we also have an update on breaking news from last night. crews were live at the end of a crime spree that stretched through longmont, ery, and lafayette. two of athlete suspects were in boulder county court today. they are accused of stealing cars and shooting windows out of the at least 12 vehicles. investigators believe they were high on drugs. no one was hurt. a 16-year-old girl is

reportedly suicidal. >> he was ready to do it, and the community knows him. >> reporter: people across colorado have turn out for prayer gatherings outside his hospital room. it has them all in time of need. adding this statement. "we would like to thank everyone who has supported the family." >> reporter: the man who shot detective brite was shot and killed by parker police. and an investigation into that shooting is still underway. a big test for the broncos this weekend!

at chief hosa. she fell off the trail and got injured and was able to text her husband a couple times before her phone went dead. there are about 40 search and rescue crews covering the area. it's not a difficult area to hike but it is difficult to search. they cannot use helicopters. they are only on the ground using night vision. and right now, like looking for a needle in a haystack. the victim's family released video recorded by the wife. >> don't shoot him. heap has no weapon. he doesn't have a gun.

[ gunfire ] >> did you shoot him! did you shoot him! >> police can be heard ordering scott 11 times to drop his weapon. police say they recovered a gun at the scene. witnesses claim they didn't see one. scott's family says he was carrying a book. a follow-up to a cbs4 special report that has sparked criminal investigations. we're exposing election fraud. investigators want to know about e being cast by dead people. >> reporter: one of a number of examples we find a man and woman who died in colorado but votes were cast in their names months and is sometimes years later. secretary of state says many appear to be voter fraud. >> it appears to be another

dead and a bill was cast for them by someone else. >> reporter: although the secretary of state says most attempts at voter fraud are detected, he concedes our investigation shows multiple cases of people impersonating dead voters and casting votes in their names. >> it's supposed to be easy to vote and hard to cheat. >> the kind of cheating we uncovered has significant implications. >> it would have beenh >> reporter: turner ran for el paso county commissioner. out of 7,000 votes cast, 17 votes in his race made the difference between winning and losing. >> so a single vote or just a couple of votes can really swing an election. >> absolutely it. certainly happened in mine. >> reporter: there's no evidence of ballot box stuffing in turner's race, it ilstraights how a few fraudulent votes can

>> that is the process, and we do have elections that are very close from time to time. and one vote does make a difference >> reporter: it's critical that after a voter dies, their name is removed from voter roles. they regularly check state listings of who died but we found maen cases. dead voters still eligible to vote. >> i'm not surprised that it happens on occasion >> reporter: plumber. he died in 2010 and shown to have cast a vote months later. >> there are some gaps. >> reporter: the secretary. state says in the last couple of years, they tightened their system. on occasion names have not been properly deleted. leading to the opportunity for votes being cast by the dead.

stan bush has an update on a missing hiker in genesee park >> reporter: just 3 minutes ago, crews made verbal contact with that missing hiker. she's apparently on the absolute farthest end of this park on some sort of ledge. now that searchers have verbal contact with her, they know she's okay, and they do believe they're going to be able to get her back to gonna be about 2, 3 inches on the ground. maybe a few rain showers through fort collin, boulder, and maybe denver's western county, a few showers. that's about it. this looks like it's ending then the rest of the
