a live look for you at hofstra university in new york. two hours, hillary clinton, and donald trump will take the stage for the first atal showdown. the stakes tonight are high for both candidates. we know after a coin toss that hillary clinton will get the first question. >> our political specialist, shaun boyd here now. we know so many fireworks in will we see any tonight? >> the two campaigns threatening to put people in the front row who might get into the head of the opponent, so yeah, i expect fireworks. beyond that, it's tough to know what to expect. >> hillary clinton vs. donald trump. it's the super bowl of politics. for 90 commercial free minutes, they'll go toe to toe tonight for the first time. >> i think it's going to be a

>> reporter: governor hickenlooper, a clinton supporter. >> there you go again, she's got to have that kind of tone to hold him accountable for the outright lies and deception he's out there pandering. that combination of likability, and yet, still have to be a fact checker, that's a pretty steep challenge. >> trump's running mate mike pence says he won't fact checked, he says he's going to tell the truth. >> make america safe again, and make america great again. >> both candidates come into the debate with plenty of personal, and political baggage, and will no doubt be baiting each other. how they think on their feet and respond to pressure could have a big impact on a race this tight. craig boswell is outside hofstra university. when we had the presidential

protests and watch parties. what's it like there. >> reporter: that protest area was closer to the venue in denver. the protest area here is really a pretty good ways from the venue. but there's still a lot of electricity. it's the third debate in a row for a presidential election, so they know how to do this. clinton will get the rs question tonight. a two minute answer, followed by donald trump. after that, we'll have to see what happens. although donald trump is the political newcomer in this case, he says he's gone light on the debate preparations. hillary clinton holed up with her inner circle over the weekend to practice. she says gender will be an important factor tonight. >> what it appears like so far is that the expectation for women is higher, that women

can be tough. >> reporter: the political audience has been warned to restrain from any disruptive behavior. that of course, includes applauding. that includes cheering. there have been 1100 seats. the moderator is also not using any auditory device, no noises, no buzzer to let the candidates know it's time to wrap up their answers. >> here's how the race looks battleground tracker found trump is one point behind clinton. the poll was just released yesterday. most voters in colorado found both trump and clinton risky and scary. but likely voters find trump a more exciting candidate. those polled found clinton not so exciting, but she's always viewed as more confident. cbs's bob schaffer says viewers will get a good measure tonight of who the candidates really are. >> you look into that

truth, and it tells you a lot about people. you know, abraham lincoln says you can fool some of the people some of the people, but not all of the people all of the time. i think that's exactly what happens in a 90 minute debate like this. i think people will come away with this, with a betterk and more complete understanding of both of these candidates. >> reporter: bob joked if he was moderating this debate, he'd the bed right now. he also backed away from this issue of fact checking the candidates. he says the candidates should be fact checking each other. then the moderator should weigh in. both of those candidates known to be less than truthful, so i expect a fair amount of fact checking tonight. we will certainly all be watching. >> you can watch the presidential debate at 7:00 p.m. here on cbs4. we'll also carry it on

debate can be heard on our news partner, koaa, news radio. happened early sunday morning near 17th and university. ride by mackey auditorium. the victim was walking when the man came up from behind her. tom mustin live in boulder. that victim fought back. >> reporter: karen thank goodness that's the case, or it woo be becoming a much different story. she was walking along this path here north of auditorium when the attack happened. cu police say there have been at least four separate attacks on our around campus since school began four weeks ago. >> it's kind of scary. >> reporter: students at cu boulder on alert after a violent attack on a female student near the mackey auditorium. >> did kind of scare me at first. it was right here, right next to my building. >> reporter: you don't know if you're safe or not. >> reporter: early sunday

walking alone. a man came up behind her. once she resisted, he grabbed her shirt and pulled her to the ground. she fought him off and left the scene. right now the department has no leads. >> we know he's described as college aged, but we don't know if he's a >> reporter: freshman phoebe coleman says this is disturbing. >> i don't want to be alone a lot, especially at night. >> reporter: after hearing of the attack, rachel willcox ordered pepper spray. rachel says she's always been cautious walking along bike passes or underpasses, but after this latest attack, she's learned valuable lessons. >> always travel with a person, never go alone, especially if you're a female. if you're alone, it's way more of a target.

described as a college aged black male. 6'1", to 6'2" with a medium build. if you have any information, you're asked to call bu police or crimestoppers. they don't have a lot of leads here, so they're really counting on the public's input. the funeral set for tomorrow for a teenager shot to death outside a party. no arrests have been made in the death of 16-year-old vargas. the shooting was earlier this month, near 128th and holly in thornton. kelly in that neighborhood. the victim's family wants justice, but no arrests so far. >> reporter: it's tough. this is a really tough case, jim. but thornton police tell us they are receiving tips in this case. the hard part is that no one has come forward with any information on who may be responsible for this deadly shooting. 16-year-old haley vargas was

hours of saturday, september 17. authorities say she was attending a party at a home here on monaco way in thornton. police believe she was the unintended target of the shooter. investigators are still trying to identify witnesses as many people scattered, following the shooting. haley's mom spoke exclusively with jamie leary. and she believes her daughter was killed by gang members and knows someone out there knows who did it. >> i think the parents really need to be strict kids. get them out of gangs. get them out of this kind of trouble. somebody's out there and knows something, and saw something. whoever's mother that is, they know. please turn in the person that did this. i want justice for my daughter, give me peace. >> reporter: police do have a very vague description of the person who may be responsible for that shooting. do have that description at cbsdenver.com. there you will also find a description of a vehicle of

again, police as well as haley's mom are asking anyone with information to police grieve police a call. kelly worth thanh, cbs4 news. new to new information in an attempted murder investigation out of hudson, colorado. investigators say that johnny cordova beat and stabbed a woman sunday morning. neighbors hit and injured cordova with gardening equipment to keep him at the scene until police could get there. the victim was taken to the hospital in cruet cal condition. cordova is in well nched also today, we learned they found stolen vehicles and drugs on james phillips' property. a man opens fire on drivers in houston. what investigators are telling us about the investigation. >> across colorado, clear skies, lots of sunshine. a nice warm day today. going to get warmer with plenty

developing now, police are searching the condo of a suspect accused of shooting nine people in identified the suspect other than he was a lawyer upset with his firm. the man opened fire on cars in rush hour early this morning. police arrived and shot and killed him. six people are hospitalized. one is in critical condition. >> i think that the first shots came in my front windows. my front window was shot three or four times. my side window was shot and the side of my car is down there. we actually just got out of the

gunman was carrying military style apparel. the latest on the 20-year- old accused of shooting and killing five people at a macy's store north of seattle washington. arcan cetin, court documents reveal he walked into the mall and shot all five victims near a makeup counter. investigators confessed. his stepfather says cetin had problems. >> mental issues that we've been trying to work on with him. that's all i can say. >> the victims ranged in age from teenage to 95. this is the news in health. it's certainly dreaded by moms to be, but morning sickness may actually be reassuring.

government study that's out. certainly doesn't make the nausea any more bearable. however as my doctor told me many years as, if you find yourself with nausea and vomiting in the early weeks of pregnancy, it's probably a sign that things are going just fine. early on, her morning sickness was unbearable. >> it was all day, every day. in the middle of the night, in the morning. >> reporter: a new study finds pregnant women who suffer w lower risk of miscarriage. researchers followed nearly 800 pregnant women who had had at least one miscarriage. they were 50 to 70% more likely to have miscarriages and stillbirths. >> the benefit is we can tell patients there's evidence of this. they're not feeling miserable for no good reason.

pregnancy is progressing. >> reporter: the cause of morning sickness is not known. dr.lena nathan of ucla health says women can still have healthy pregnancies without the morning sickness. >> a really important step forward, just so we can understand more about pregnancy. >> reporter: flores says the study is reassuring. >> i was definitely relieved. i worried and the side effects of any medications i would have to take. >> reporter: because becoming a mom can be a bit scary. women in the study kept diaries of when they were sick early on, and answered questionnaires throughout the 36th week of pregnancy. this is one of the first times that researchers were able to obtain such detailed information. >> good study. deputies in arapahoe county began carrying the opiate

and say it's already saving lives. >> they said they used it to revive a man and a woman passed out in their car friday night. they found what they thought to be heroin inside the car. after being given the medication both were taken to a nearby hospital, where the staff says the narcan was the biggest factor in their surviving. >> it's administered nasally, similar to the way they're now giving flu shots. >> a variety of other drugs were also found in that car. all right, let's get over talk a little about this fabulous weather we're seeing today. >> it was a cooler weekend. 17degrees cooler on saturday. cooler still on sunday, with lots of sunshine. seeing the same thing today. there's a live picture of our doppler 4000, border to border, we're in pretty good shape. scattered showers down to the south and along the front that brought us the cooler air. that has marched to the east with showers and thunderstorms along with it. as we take a look at the temperatures, you can see that cool air knifing down to el

just 66 today. only 70 in washington, d.c. on the southern corners, we are warm. 90s here. take a look at this. the offshore breezes. 100 in los angeles. 100 in san diego. warmer than las vegas and phoenix. here is our hour by hour forecast. again, nothing on it, so let's just run it and see what happens. the answer is not much. we do see a scattered shower over the southwest. you see these clouds bubbling as thursday arrived, they bring moisture, pushing it into the west, and then over the front range by friday. that's when we see an isolated shower or storm into the city. 76 and 77, our highs today after starts of 42 at the airport. 50 downtown. 74 and 44 our normal. pretty close to that. 90 and 28 are records.

the players called him the other night on xfinity monday night live. why not, the numbers for trevor simian were really impressive yesterday. threw for more than 300 yards. 4 touchdowns, and maybe most importantly, no interceptions. in the process, he picked up his first road win as a starter. think back to the drive after cincinnati took they ate up near 8 minutes. when the defense forced cincy to go 3 and out, the offense came back out, and added yet another touchdown. that one, only a 55-yarder to demaryius thomas. those two drives are really what helped put the game away. >> last week, we had a chance to put our team away, we put our defense back on the field. this week, we get the ball, you know, they could have possibly had to go back out there with a 5 point lead.
