>> whoo. okay. >> this is the news at 6 a.m. the first presidential debate is now in the bag. it got fisty. what's ahead for the candidates today as people try and make up their minds? good morning everybody. >> this morning we have the zingers and the other heated moments from the debate. you may be more confused this morning. we'll cover all of it. let's get a check on weather and traffic this morning. we'll start off with lauren. g we're off to a clear start to the day. it's dark outside and we're in for a lot of sunshine. temperatures this morning. you may need a light jacket. 44 in akron. 29 right now in gunnison. 50 degrees in grand junction. we'll talk about a little bit of a warm up today coming in in a moment. for now, let's check in with joel. >> slow drive this morning. take a look at the cdot camera,

traffic we have here. an earlier accident getting cleared out of the way. >> one debate down. two debates to go. the presidential candidates return to battleground states today after last night's debate. it focused on topics of race and jobs and national security. >> it's like his plan to defeat a sis. he says it's a secret plan but the only secret is that he has no plan. >> now, you're talking about taking out a sis but you were there and you were secretary of state when infant. now it's in over 30 countries and you're going to stop them? i don't think so. >> some of the more memorable moments in the debate did not deal with policy. >> so you've got to ask yourself why won't he release his tax returns? i think there may be a couple of reasons. first, maybe he's not as rich as he says he is. second, maybe he's not as

returns against my lawyer's witness when she releases her 33,000 e-mails deleted. as soon as she releases them, i will release my tax returns. >> well, the crowd did cheer at times during that debate. moderator lester holt had trouble corralling the candidates. >> resent polls list colorado as a toss up in the presidential election. people had mixed reactions during the debate watch party hosted by radio. >> there was a few strengths for clinton and a few for trump. i think trump on national security was superior . he brought out the works of the last eight years of foreign policy. >> i didn't think it, to me, it was such a clear run away with hillery. i thought she did better and it would be closer he didn't seem qualified and fit.

carolina today. trump is heading to florida and they both debate again sunday, september 9th and wednesday, october 19th. before that happens, the two vice presidential candidates debate next week on tuesday, october 4th. >> 41 days until the election and your vote will count. if you have not registered, people are trying to make that happen today. jamie live right now, she's at civic center park right now to explain. >> hey. it's national registration day and for this day there's events taking place all across the country and dozens within our state to make sure everybody eligible to vote is registered to vote. now, according to the secretary of state's office in 2008, 6 million americans didn't vote because they missed a registration dead line or didn't know how to register. the officials want to make sure that nobody is left out. tuesday, november 8 is election day. just a little over a month to

register through election day. note how you register to vote matters. here are some of the approaching dead lines. if you got a mail in ballot, make sure to get that in the mail by october 31st. the ballot must be received and quoted no later than 7:00 p.m. on election day. if you register by mail by the 31st, you have to pick up in person. you can register to vote in person on election day. this happens to deliver a ballot in person. here at civic center park, the event will kick off at 11 a.m. there's also an event at union station and again, a dozen other events across the state. all the way to masa state and grand junction. there's no excuse not to register to vote. for more information make sure to visit online at national voter registration.org. live at civic center park, cbs4

this is a view from chopper 4. south bound coming down and look at that time taillights. look at the headlights with the folks heading in the north bound direction as well. i want to take you to the ground. this is the same spot. we had an earlier accident at 84th cleared off to the shoulder but you can see the slowing we have in the 50s and 40s. 10 minutes to get you from denver. cbs4 traffic of traffic there. we're going to continue to see speeds i-225 on the ramp to get to i-70. look at the drive times north bound along i-225 we have speeds dipping to 40s and 50s south bound. i-25 making your way into the tech center. you can turn on your partner's radio for the latest traffic in cbs4 weather together. >> breaking overnight, someone

the bullets go through the house and the couch stops them. no one was hurt because of this. police take over the house and trying to figure out who fired the shots. >> one remains in the hospital after a houston lawyer started shooting in his own neighborhood. police shot and killed attorney nathan yesterday. they found notsy emblems along his personal belongings in a car filled with weapons near the scene. they found more than the shooter hurt nine people and all of them thankfully expected to survive. >> a teenage hitchhiker accused of violently attacking a 71- year-old bolder woman. investigators say 16-year-old jeffrey collins hit katy with a fire poker near her home in the town of ward after she offered a lift to collins and two of her friends. the trio was stranded. investigators a collins wanted

he attacked her. the bolder district attorney plans to charge collins as an adult with an attempted murder charge. today a judge sentences a man accused of laundering money for a ring. the u.s. attorney's office has dropped charges in the same case of a denver attorney. he was accused of using cash from column bee i can't to put into a business as a front. prosecution's request to drop the charges. he profited $450,000 in cash that was found in the trunk of his car? >> searching for a missing climber, wilderness now entering its second week. he was reported missing tuesday of last week. he was apparently planning on climbing pyramid peak last tuesday and north and south the following day.

and crews are using a plane often used to fight wild fires. it uses thermal imaging to better search the terrain. search crews want to find a man overdue from a camping trip. this is 43-year-old scott burker. nobody's seen or heard from him since friday. he was looking to go camping either in the north desert or area west of debeck. he could be driving a white and blue bronco. >> medium in cedar rapids iowa are hoping a temporary flood wall will hold the rains in the river. it's expected to crest in morning or afternoon. crews stacked sandbags or built larger barriers in anticipation of higher water. they're protecting businesses and homes for now. temperature outside 47 degrees. coming up next, gas is cheap.

. welcome back everyone. excessive air pollution effects 90% of people world wide. this leads to problems like strokes, heart disease and lung cancer. the parts of globe most effected, south east asia, eastern mediterranean and western pacific regions are the hardest hit with pollutions and most of it comes from cars and plants and burning wastes. relief could be found on a ride.

folks like rain. unfortunately, we're not going to get that. let's take a look at what's happening across the country. we have high pressure dominating the west. that's keeping us dry and warmer as we head to the weekend. really, we stay dry in colorado. mostly sunny skies for us today. beautiful outside. if you can sneakway for the office just a little bit, it's going to be really nice outside. moisture down to the south west. maybe a p about. everybody else stays on the dry side.over night skies are clear and tomorrow we may have a few more clouds on the western slope and maybe a couple pops of moisture from the south west. most of it in utah. denver, eastern plains another dry day and temperatures start off tuesday morning certainly aren't bad. it's a touch warmer than yesterday. 45 in burling ton, 46 in lineman. 48 degrees in denver and 50 in

the curiousty might be causing some of the slowing. here we are in the westbound direction along i-270. here is our cbs4 cam north of i- 70 as you make your way south bound. creating the steady volume. express toll lane same as regular lane at least for now. i would hold off on paying for that. north bound we have an accident on the approach to i-70. this has delays back to south pound along 225 seeing delays as well. coming from the west, i-c470, 29 minutes. >> markets reacting to last night's debate and maybe you're not getting the mileage you think. jill live at the new york stock exchange right now. hi, jill. >> hey, good morning. futures are pointing to a bit of a higher open today.

the nasdaq fell 48. international markets already weighing in on their debate last night. within the first 15 minutes, the mexican paso serged, the canadian dollar rose. some think hillery clinton did better than trump. mexico and canada close trading ties with the u. s. they're part of the worst deal that the u.s. ever signed. pharmaceutical company mylan making a lot more on their epipens than t congress. she says the company pockets a hundred dollars on each pack of pens. the wall street journal says that is not true that the number has been reached by detucketting the tax rate of 37.5% of the profits even though the company pays a lot less than that. they make about $166. and the epa says gas mileage estimates for one-third of the new vehicles sold in the u.s. will fall. it's mostly because drivers are

drag on engines. things like heated seats, bus drivers are driving faster. allen. >> when it gets cheaper, we tend to put the foot down a little bit. >> pedal to the medal. let's get you tuesday's top stories. people continue to remember the five people shot to death in a shopping mall north of seattle. thousands came out for a vigil last night. the accused gunman confessed to the shooting that happened at the make up department at macies. him to attack. a warning out for student this is morning after an attempted sex assault on campus. it happened early sunday morning. police say a female student was walking near mackey auditorium when a man came up behind her and pulled her to the ground and the student managed to fight her off. the attacker is described as another college kid.

pacific west all the way down dry. a couple of storms possible in the midwest. we're seeing those on the great lakes region this morning and a chance of stormy weather along the gulf coast today and up in parts of new england stormy weather. overall, the western part of the country on the dry side. >> good morning. we watch from copter4 where we've had all of that construction. you can see where they've rerouted traffic into the outside demolish that old bridge. a lot of work to be done. a couple of trouble spots watching in the south bound direction. they've cleared out of the way. we have another accident north bound on the approach to i-70 causing delays in the north bound direction. we see speeds dipping to the 30s. here's the good news. no delays along the a-line. >> great to hear. new this morning.

debate cbs denver.com. >> back here at home happening this morning, people attending a funeral for a 16-year-old thornton girl shot outside of a house party. she beat cancer during her short life. scene is live outside the police department where the hunt for the shooter continues. scene. reporter: >> good morning. it's been several days since the shooting and today, the family prepares for funeral happened, police still trying to find the shooter. this happened in the area of 120th and holly meet in thornton at a house early saturday morning. about a week ago, investigators were still getting tips all that time into the case but witnesses are too afraid to come forward with more information. police think she was an unintended target of gang violence. her mother hopes she can appeal to anyone out there that they

we're watching this area of low pressure making its way towards california later this week and moisture streaming up our direction. some of that could make it into the high country later this week. temperatures are really going to cool down potentially next week. we may get down into the 30s in the evening hours a couple of days next week. until then, we are warm and dry and sunny. today we're looking at mostly sunny skies. we are looking at maybe a pop or two for the moisture heading up into the southern mounin and we may see a few more clouds on the western slope tomorrow. temperatures this morning, 48 in denver and 45 out in bullington. 49 in growly. 27 in leadville, one of our chilly spots. 50 over in grand junction. later today, we're warming up a bit more than yesterday. 82 in denver. 83 in fort collins and growly. mid-80s on the eastern plains

leaves and changing colors. 74 in uncle, 77 in craig. tomorrow low 80s and still a beautiful sunny day. gets a little windy around here and friday we have a chance for a few isolated showers. better chance saturday. joel, how's the morning drive looking? >> a traffic alert we're following this morning. here's live pictures coming in. north bound along parker as you get to jewel or near jewel. most of this is focused off right behind a set of trees the side and right up against the fence there. this closure is going to be for an extended period of time. this is north bound parker as you get past state to jewel. let me show you where this is at on the map here. you can see exactly where we're talking about and the delays. we're going to have curiousty. they're using that to allow one single file lane of traffic by.

place for an extended period of time. north bound direction of i-225 we have an accident on the approached i-70 blocking off the center lane. it's still causing delays. look at it extend all the way back to mississippi. new accident along i-70 as well. here's a look at the drive time. both directions along i- 225 is slowing. that's a similar situation along i-270 as well. riding bikes on the campus students pay attention. officers with a number of intersections enforcing the traffic laws. we could get a ticket. the education campaign is aimed at reducing cyclist. >> thank you, we have breaking news we want to bring people this morning out of the bronx. here's a live look at what was a house. our new york affiliate is reporting this house completely exploded. people are injured.

here's what happened. firefighters were called out to a report of a gas leak and when they got there, the house exploded. we are working with our affiliate to get more information out of the bronx in new york. >> fire crews in california hope to keep more homes from burning in this santa cruz mountain. a wild fire in california already destroyed one home and threatening hundreds of others right now. the flames showed no signs of that fire is a thousand acres in size. >> a lot of people angry about vandalism found at a jefferson county park. hikers found graffiti on trees and rocks and trailings. this happened at the park. >> this makes me feel really upset and disappointing that somebody would disrespect our beautiful state like this. >> it's not the first time that this area has been vandalized.

spray painting rocks on lookout mountain. >> the denver police department's body camera program is englishes panning. it will award a total after $20 million to a hundred agencies across the country for cameras. dpd gets about 130,000 in all of this. the justice department is also sending the el paso sheriff's office money as well. >> a sleepless night for people in taiwan as they are subjected to another typhoon. how causing big problems. >> and steven colbert finds a treasure strobe of material in last night's debate. . the colorado rockies are back in action today after having the day off yesterday. the rockies with just six games left start a three game series later tonight. some things transcends sports.

jose fernandez was killed in a boating accident. all marlins players wearing his number 16 jersey and then there was this. marlins lead off batter dee gordon hitting a home run. his first home run of the season. you can see the emotion from gordon as he crosses the plate. couldn't scripted a better tribute. the marlins ended up winning the game 7-3. that's your look at sports. have a great one.

times cheered clinton. >> both trump and clinton are hoping for a bump in the polls but our political specialist says she doesn't think this is going to happen for either candidate after last night. . >> this debate was high stakes. not only because the race is a dead heat but because nearly 20% of voters remain undecided and i think most of them probably still are. here's why. from the debate, i'm not sure there was any one moment that changed the course of the race. trump was definitely on the defensive more. i think the bar was set pretty low for him and he managed to at least clear it. while the polls may move a little, i think the next debate is still high stakes. i'm political specialist scene, cbs news. >> trump and clinton faces off again sunday october 9th and wednesday october 19th.

during a shooting into a house on south clinton. police are trying to figure out who fired the shots and why. >> family and friends are hoping for better news today in the hopes of a missing climber. 49-year-old david cook is an expert. no one has heard from him since last tuesday. crews are using a plane used to fight wild for him. search teams are also busy in masa. scott is overdue from a camping trip. he is suppose to return saturday but no one has seen or heard from him since he left friday. deputies say he was looking to either go camping or the area west of dibuke. he may be driving a white and blue bronco. >> right now, we have a warning out on the campus about an attacker on the loose.

at 17th when a man apparently grabbed her and pulled her to the ground. she fought him off. this happened sunday. the man ran off. here's what we know. the attacker described as college aged, black and saggy beard and mustache. >> new video this morning as a community remembers the five people shot and killed at a macy's store in burling ton, washington. thousands of people packed the parking lot of night. there you hear it. people were singing and lit candles and passing cars honked in support of this hurting community. >> you could just feel the love from everybody. >> all of these people see the strength in this valley is amazing. >> everybody is together. everybody loves each other. i don't even know these people and i feel like i've known them all my life.
