another mild day with temperatures in the low 80s. starting off with cool temperatures in the high country and off to the west. 39 in meeker and 45 in steamboat and 33 in leadville and 32 in alamosa and 50 in denver and akron and 47 in burlington. another fairly mild today but we'll talk about potential changes coming up in a moment. let's check in with joel. a couple accidents along i- 70 in the westbound direction at havana and another boulevard. breaking overnight a man is critical after a shooting near i-70. shawn chitnis at the scene gathering vakts this morning. what's the latest, shawn? ? >>reporter: police are able to open back up the scene after hours in the area and closing off the spot as they continue to investigate this shooting. we were able to watch the crime scene investigation team here

the investigators going in and out of the motel as well as closing off not only the motel side itself but the surrounding area. this is happening under i-70. it's a tight area and not a lot of space for police to get set up. they had to take over 46th behind me. we first learned about this from denver police before 9:00 on tuesday night so it was a lot of time that they needed and clearly spent here while th investigation. they have been able to open it up now. we don't have an update on the victim. we do know one man was taken to the hospital in critical condition at the time. as for the suspect, police say they do bloef one person involved in this shooting but working on a description that they can share with the public. we're waiting to hear from them on that. live in denver, shawn chitnis, cbs4 news.

continues deliberating the case against the man accused of killing a trooper in the line of duty. jamie leary is live at the boulder county courthouse with a closer look. >> reporter: the jury deliberated for more than three hours yesterday with no verdict so they will be back here this morning to resume discussions. he's facing 16 different charges in this case including first degree last year he eluded csp after a trooper attempted to pull him over. prosecutors say he acted recklessly is responsible for driving his car into the trooper during the chase. the two troopers were investigating a crash when he slammed into them. tefoe died on scene and he was only 21 years old.

morning for the kids in the mountains. let's check in with joel, good morning. we're watching a couple accidents on the highway. one of them is near i-70 and central boulevard. you get further to the east, an accident at havana and the back as well. this is in the westbound direction of i-70. look at the back ups before peoria. they start backing up on to i- 25 in the northbound direction so we're continuing to the other accident is southbound along downing to the north of hamden there. so that's going to cause some slowing and maybe curiosity slowing as well. across the denver metro area as a whole, we have a lot of green out there. running at or near posted speed limits and southbound coming into town getting false returns. we have been here in the recent months along eastbound u.s. 36

emotional protests stormed the san diego police department overnight because police shot and killed what the protests call an unarmed black man. the man refused to listen to orders. police were initially called to the man because he was acting erratically. it happened yesterday in el cajon where the man refused multiple instructions to take his hands out of his pocket. he pulled an object out and held it up as if it were a weapon and that's when people reacted and protested at the scene and outside the police department. >> he was shot five times and he's mentally challenged. you're not trying to stop or help him -- you're trying to kill hem. >> here it is -- another black man killed and i can understand their anger. but violence is not the way. >> the el cajon police department released a picture right before the shooting

release it at this time. police are searching for a vandal who damaged property inside a historic denver church. this happened al the sacred heart catholic church at larimer and 28th. church leaders believe the vandal stayed behind after a celebration on saturday night. when a parishioner found him he started breaking things. >> that's when he started throwing things through the windows and knocking down mess. >> a statue is 150 years old. also damaged stain glass windows and some of these are original and installed when the church was built 130 years ago. the vandal got away. they were caught selling fake broncos jerseys and other items at the mile high flee market. two men changed their pleas to guilty for selling more than

good morning, temperatures not too bad outside to start off this lovely wednesday morning. 55 in boulder and 43 ouray ray and 51 in la junta. 53 in grand junction. satellite and radar quiet across colorado and staying that way today fo part. still some showers parts in arizona and new mexico could get some thunderstorms out that way. this area of low pressure is swinging up moisture in that direction and staying in arizona and new mexico and up into utah and nevada. our south western corner may get in on the action. . high pressure to the east blacking it from heading to the front range.

this keeps us under a dry pattern. we have a chance for rain potentially heading our way. look ago at futurecast, dry across eastern colorado and a few more clouds to the west and a few pops of moisture in the high country and down to the southwest. skies are clear and maybe a few showers to start the day to the west and a better chance for rain in the high country. high pressure to the east keeps it from heading in our direction. and 81 in greeley and fort collins and 80 in burlington. 70 in frisco and 77 in steamboat. so for today mostly sunny skies and pleasant. 80 degrees by 2:00. nice lunch hour outside. for your five day forecast, high pressure still in place moving out and breaking down on friday and saturday chance for a few showers out there for sunday as well. let's check in with joel, good

alert we're following this morning at i-70 and i-225. these are the back ups. look at the mess to get on to i- 70 itself in the westbound direction. an accident at havana and look at the back ups. we're seeing this section of roadway in the northbound direction of i-225 turn red as well. that's a mess of a drive and take colfax as an alternate. accident on downing to the north of 285 and hamden as englewood. not causing delays along hamden itself. southbound coming into town looking good with except of the one accident. drive times from the north ten minutes south into town. both directions loading up. nothing slowing you down too bad. mississippi avenue is closing today. crews are working on storm sewer improvements. the road will be closed from broadway to santa fe until

our weather watcher reporting 42 degrees in glenwood springs this morning. skies are clear and temperature is cool and winds are light and should be a beautiful day as clear skies across the state staying this way for the most part. a pop or two of moisture in the high country today. it's fairly mellow today. clear skies and again maybe a few more clouds in the foothills and high country.

it's a mess in two places. an accident southbound at 84th where our one camera is in the right hand portion of the screen blocking the express toll lane and making a mess of things southbound coming into town. unfortunately another trouble spot in the westbound direction of i-70. looking at it back up all the way before i-225. we'll see back ups making a mess for the drive from aurora to denver. rocket company founder elon musk is showing off plans for his journey to mars. he was in mexico yesterday where he unveiled a video simulation of the trip to mars. he says it would take about 10 $10 billion to develop a rocket and the first passengers could take off as soon as 2024. each vehicle would take about a hundred people on a one way trip to mars.
