a horse with the denver police mountain patrol had to be put down. there's an internal investigation. karen morfitt has been working to get answers about what happened. this mounted patrol unit is seen all over town. >> reporter: you've probably seen them here at civic center

horse was showing signs or symptoms of colic when it went in for treatment. they are still opening an investigation to determine whether or not the horse may have been neglected. the death of a horse on denver pd's mounted unit has prompted an internal affairs investigation. the horse named mc hammer has been with them since last year. a relatively new member of the unit. raised concerns about abuse and prompted our calls to denver police. according to their spokesperson, the horse was taken to a clinic on tuesday with symptoms of colic. today police say they made the difficult decision to put the horse town. they're investigating to determine if there was any negligence by department permit but couldn't reveal more about why because
