hi everybody. welcome to the cbs for morning news. thursday, september 29. i am alan gionet. i am britt moreno. we are september and october has a cooldown creeping into town. let's creep over to the weather center.>> good morning, off to a nice start with some warmer temperatures in some spots. there are a few 50s in the high country. 51 aspen, 45 avon, 50 steamboat. 48 burlington.

the western slope but we are dry across the front range and eastern plains. a few showers several through to the west this morning. mesa county all the way towards the nuclear area. a light rain to get us going and temperatures will get to the low 80s once again today and we will have a lot of sunshine in denver. we will talk about the rest of the state in the moment -- in a moment. watching cones out there this morning. we have been watching on 285 is they do work at c4 70. no flashing lights, that is a good sign. as folks are heading out the door. a cross timber metro it is a similar situation but we do have the ramps closed as you get from santa fe and northbound to i 25. the alternate takes you to santa fe past alameda. keep that in mind if you are heading out the door in the next few minutes. we have slowing on c4 70 near to 85 and southbound as you

vacation and they are found dead. one was from denver. authorities want to know what happened. the women were vacationing overseas and stan bush has the story. >> reporter: 37-year-old annie korkki was on a vacation out of a dream. the skater and her sister robin were staying at this $2000 a night resort in the seychelles, a luxurious travel destination. two days after beachside photos on facebook both sisters were found dead in their hotel room. the cause of death is a mystery. according to reports in the seychelles the women were drinking the day they died and even needed help getting back to their villa. they worked by hotel staff in their beds the next morning. police said there were no signs of a physical altercation but did say undisclosed medications

37-year-old annie korkki was a synchronized stater with a masters group in denver and she left the team this year to join her sister on their vacation on the island of the indian ocean. >> she talked about it as a trip of a lifetime and she and robin felt like it was a wonderful way to celebrate their relationship and their love of travel and adventure. >> their family has flown to the seychelles to recover the sisters and get more information about their death. >> that was stan bush. investigators have not ruled out foul play a middle school student in aurora is in critical condition after being hit by a car walking to school. 211-year-old boys were crossing mississippi at all the street on their way to a were a middle school. the light changed while they were crossing and one of them was hit. the driver did not see the boys and she will not be cited. police are trying to determine what led to a tragic school shooting in a world south

a teenager killed his father and then went to a local elementary school shooting a teacher and two students. here is hannah daniels. >> reporter: townsville elementary remains closed and for the rest of the week as investigators try to figure out what led a teenager to open fire on school grounds wednesday. >> did he have issues at school or at home, we don't know. but we will run the gamut of everything. >> the 14-year-old suspect drove to the school and got out of his car and started shooting at people on the playground with a handgun. frantic parents were sent an emergency text and rushed to the scene. >> the school filled up with police and ems. we were told at that point it was on lockdown and we saw helicopters coming in. >> a female teacher and two

volunteer firefighter was one of the first on the scene. he tackled a teenager and held him down until police arrived. >> there is no one here that doesn't believe that this firefighter is not a hero. >> the teenager shot and killed his father, jeffrey osborne, inside his home 3 miles from the school. the teenager called his grandparents who discovered the body. >> we couldn'un they could it make sense. >> officials are offering great counseling to teachers and students. hannah daniels, cbs news. jacob paul remains in critical condition and the other student and the teacher were treated at a hospital and released. the justice department is holding a forum in denver and it's a chance to build relationships and in the wake of the recent law enforcement shooting. shawn chitnis is live in denver with a closer look at what's happening.>> reporter: good

department. it is hosting these across the country. the first one was in detroit. it is a chance for the public to meet with leaders from law enforcement both local and national and get a chance to talk about the relationship that they have between those two. this is in the news giving some of the police shootings that of happened recently one of them happening near san diego. that will be likely one topic that comes up this morning. and that shooting we know that and killed by officers in el cajon, california. he was mentally unstable and was walking into traffic and police say he took a shooting stance with his hands and pulled something out of his pocket so that is one issue that has gotten a lot of attention across the country. it may come up in the forum. us attorney general loretta lynch was at the first forum and she's not expected to be at

enforcement leaders will be here. the goal is to try to talk about solutions that they can work together on to improve relationships between the police and the public. that will begin at 9 am. shawn chitnis, cbs4. it is time now to get the latest on business news before the bell. >> let's go to joe wagner. live at the stark exchange.>> reporter: news of an opec deal sent energy stocks higher broader gains on wall street. the dow jones 110 points and the s&p finished 11 higher at the nasdaq rose 12 and features are pointing to a lower open. the ceo of wells fargo testifies on capitol hill again today with a thick bank account scandal. the california treasure suspended ties with the company yesterday for a year. the development comes after wells fargo employees legally created 2 million banking credit cards accounts that customer never wanted.

already finished holiday shopping. 34 million have started checking off items from their holiday lists but 74% of people who responded to the survey say they are annoyed by overachievers and they think stores are pushing the holiday season too soon. today is national coffee day. it lets us give some good deals on coffee. krispy kreme has a free and a glazed doughnut. dunkin' donuts is selling coffee for $.66 the 66th anniversary. starbucks will donate a copy tree for every -- for every cup of rude mexican coffee. you will have to pay full price but you will feel good. i love how we're celebrating this. i have my coffee here. in colorado caribou coffee will do something different. for every cup purchased today the company will donate a cup

this is the news and health. a red flag about certain painkillers. prescription drugs often used for treating pain and inflammation have been linked to an increased risk of heart failure. a study investigated popular anti-inflammatories including ibuprofen and naproxen. researchers connected to the drugs with higher hospital admissions. mothers who deliver their babies by c-section are at new research finds that adding azithromycin cuts infection rates by 50%. the study says the extra dose it reduces hospital readmissions after a cesarean delivery. >> the epidemic of childhood obesity has caused more children to suffer from high blood pressure. researchers are finding those kids perform worse on cognitive tests. a study in the journal of

increase of moisture on the western slope right now. some showers could go through the central mounds but for the most part southwestern colorado gets heavy rainfall. it will continue overnight tonight. tomorrow morning could have rain for the western slope. here in denver a little bit more cloud cover tomorrow morning at a chance of showers rolling through in the afternoon and evening. we start off mild and a chance for rain in the afternoon tomorrow. temperatures today 83 in denver. 76 burlington. high country, lower 70s and upper 60s. 68 steamboat. 71 in grand junction. mostly sunny skies in denver and temperatures in the low 80s. it should be a mild day once again. tomorrow a chance for rain and we dropped to the 70s. chance of storms on saturday and if you on sunday. monday is mild and in the 70s. we may only be in the 60s as we head towards tuesday. look at i-76 and i 25 from

good drive. especially along i- 76 in the westbound direction. we have ramp closures that are in place from santa fe northbound and i 25. a detour they're taking you through cones and slower speed so it will add two or three minutes to the drive time. the other spot we watching -- we are watching at 285. it continues southbound and it should move out of the y program that offers treatment to some heroine users that have found themselves back in jail. this is a partnership involving health experts, the jail and courts. jim benemann shows us how it helps people go clean and sober. >> when you first do it is the best feeling you ever have. >> walter is talking about his time as a heroin addict. he started with painkillers and got hooked. >> once you start doing it it gets you. >> he was physically addicted. >> by the time i wanted treatment i didn't want to use

>> we have been reporting on the opioid problem and how is that impacting the denver drug court. >> we've seen a 47% increase in participants into the drug court that indicate that heroine or other opioids are the primary drug of choice. >> denver drug court probation supervisor scott prendergast was looking for a way to get and keep drug offenders and treatment. >> this isn't a morality issue but a medical issue any disease. >> successful outcomes require stability of the jail coupled with the medical expertise of a treatment program. >> denver is one of the only jails if not the only jail in colorado that allows inmates to ingest methadone. >> why is denver the only jail that allows this continued methadone treatment.

>> under the program probation violators will start on methadone while in jail. they will be evaluated by a team at denver health medical center correctional care center. >> the physician will assess the opiate use disorder and begin the methadone or opiate replacement therapy. >> methadone relieves the withdrawals but doctors adjust the dosage and the patient will take the first dose while at the jail. >> this is a controlled site environment distraction. >> when the offender is released the next stop is the addiction research and treatment services or the arts program. at the university of colorado. a volunteer will escort them directly there. >> to provide that transition and that warm hand off. the i know what you have been through and i know where you are going.>> it will bolster with counseling and support. a program like this would have
