28 degrees and the sun is out there on the horizon. we have temperatures starting off cooler today than we were this time yesterday. most of the state with the exception of the far eastern plains running about 5-15 degrees cooler this hour than we were at the same time yesterday. 39 in craig, 36 in avon, 2350 in grand junction. 50 ingarage. grand junction. 27 in breckenridge, a chilly start there in the north side. a couple sprinkles on the south eastern plains. clouds passing by and we will check the full forecast for today and see if it's a good day to check out leaves maybe. we'll talk about that coming up. on the storm watch this

weakened overnight to a category 4 storm roaring across the caribbean sea now thchlt is video from columbia bee and venezuela. they expect it to hit jamaica tomorrow night with wind speeds as strong as 160 miles per hour. south florida could be threatened next week. a developing story out of arapahoe county. a judge sentenced a youth pastor for praying on a young the victim's family say christopher hujen son won't be spending enough time behind bars. >> reporter: the former youth pastor met his victim at this church. she was just 13. his role as a person of trust is why the district attorney's office was able to ask for jail time flt the teen was inappropriately sexually touched. >> he was a youth minister and

the community to give her counsel and support. and to help her find her path. >> prosecutors asked for four years of jail time at the low end of the range but the defendant got 90 days. he is also sentenced to 20 years of intensive probation for sex offend everies where he will get treatment. he can't have access to the internet or contact with children under the age of 18. his sentence did mandatory prison time in colorado. the prosecution feels what the pastor got was very little. >> this 13-year old felt very well neshl so she reached out to this guy and he exploited that. >> the defendant had a huge show of support in court yesterday including 46 letters written on his behalf for the court. a string of burglaries in

store owners left with a mess as they look for a suspect. the suspect broke into four businesses last week and set off security alarms and also caught on camera. you the thief stole only a small amount of cash but at one salon the burglar only got away with $19. learn more about the death of two sisters at a luxury resort off the coast of africa. autopsy results show they died from excess fluid in their lungs called pulmonary edema which can be caused by any number of things from delayed decompression from scuba diving

with alcohol. this colorado mother is facing serious charges after police say she faked having cancer to get a man's money. 49 -year old from monument met a 79-year old man from westminster through a dating service. she told him she had cancer and needed money for treatment. he gave her $34,000 over two years and bought her a car and vacations overseas and have cancer. school districts warning parents about social media rumors involving school violence and clowns. the pair >> reporter: lake verge police wood police converged on the school. >> as soon as we get a threat we immediately find who the threat is about and bring in law enforcement so they can do research. >> reporter: letters have gone

this point our investigations have led us to believe it's a social media hysteria. >> i believe it's just stupid. some kid going around trying to scare kids. >> it's a bunch of empty threats. have they done a whole lot? no. >> reporter: in adams county parents received a letter reading posts that threaten safety are not a harmless joke and are taken seriously. there watches on facebook pages. >> people said they have heard clowns are shooting up the school and some say they have seen clowns of school property. >> each threat is being taken as if it is real. rick sallinger, cbs4 news. happening today new rules for pot packaging go into effect. the new guidelines apply to

this is the news in health this morning. we're about a week into fall now and the flu season has started. it runs from october to may and health experts say now is the time to get immunized. kathy walsh shows us there are a few vaccines to choose from. >> reporter: dr. giser is getting set for the season with a flu shot. the infectious disease physician got a high dose vaccine recommended for people 65 and older. >> we don't know if there are epidemics this year or not. so it's good to be prepared. >> reporter: there's a choice

some are effective against 2a strains and one b strain expected to hit the u.s. this season. other vaccines target the three strains and an additional b. if you're afraid of shots you will need to be brave. this season flu mist isn't an option. >> the cdc recommend this year not to use the flu mist because in two of the past three flu seasons the flu mist was shown to be ineffective. infectious disease clinical pharmacist specialist says everyone over the age of six months should get the flu shot. >> you can't get the flu from the flu shot. >> if you're 65 or older the cdc recommends two vaccines given in a series to prevent certain types of dak too early infections that can cause meningitis and gnome. >> can get pneumonia from that

nice sunrise there on the horizon. just a beautiful start to the day. there are a handful of clouds on our eastern plains and a few of those are making rain. i'll show you that here in a minute. let's check temperatures around the state. 50s is 50s east of interstate 25. 51 at dia. mostly 30s for the higher elevations over on the western slope. robert peck, 47 degrees, northwestern arvada now. brush. here we go with the doppler 4000. in lamar and campo, a couple light sprinkles in the area. this will be moving out and you will get sun sunshine today. colorado is on the northern fringe of high pressure so that will bring a nice and mild weekend. the new storm moving to the northwestern coast here much cooler weather coming to

temperature but the wind. the high pressure today slides off to the east and the ridge builds as this low comes in between the high and the low we call it a temperature gradient. the gradient between the temperature and pressure will really get those winds cranking as we go into the week ahead. here on futurecast, just a couple showers popping over the foothills later and trying to roll across much like yesterday. the air over denver is simply too dry to support storm activity but late in the afternoon early evening, somebody could get a sprinkle. the best chance of that is south of denver over douglas county. if you're traveling to jamaica or cuba, don't. major hurricane moving to the north as we go into the week ahead. it could be catastrophic for some of the caribbean islands and a major news story for sure.

if you want to look at the fall color, there's still color out there but the northern reaches of the state, the leaves are starting to fall so i would go south and west today if you're hoping to go check out fall color. there's a guide on cbsdenver.com. here's the five day forecast. i promised you change. there it is. look at that, going from 70s to near 80 to struggling with a high of 60 come wednesday. quite a roller coaster ride on the way for temperatures. >> we had to be prepared for it. it's october now. >> it is. local firefighters have a mystery on their hands. what they found inside a firefighters boot. plus a surprising find in thornton, what we know about the alligator putting up a fight with officers. broncos injury report for the week, wear and green have been ruled out so pretty similar to last week.

hot and humid afternoon. what's different this time around is the broncos are the favorites against the bucs. they're expected to win and take on a lesser nfc opponent. not a lot of hype in the game, the broncos one of five undefeated team so not a lot of people doubting them but don't bring up the possibility that the broncos could get complacent. >> people still made a prediction that we wouldn't make the playoffs. we still got that in our heads and stil game. that's our mind set, regardless of what's going on outside there's 16 traps in the nfl. if you don't play good you get trapped. week four and focus on playing good again and we know we have to play good and win the game so we restart every week and get ready to play and respect everybody.

it's saturday, october 1st, this is the news on c in denver's capital hill on colfax between pearl and pennsylvania is closed this hour for a deadly shooting investigation. police say two men were taken to the hospital early this morning. one of them did die. the other is expected to be okay. right now it's not clear what led to this shooting. police do not have any suspects in custody. we also have more breaking news this time from thornton. three people were stabbed early this morning.

doppler 4000, hardly a cloud to be seen. i have the cloud layer turned on but not much in the state and in the south eastern koerner a handful of clouds and sprinkles this morning that will be on their way out soon. this is the weekend to go to the high country and check out the fall color. why? well, we have big changes brewing. we'll look at that for you coming up here in the next weather segment. new video this morning from through the streets last night called for justice for a man who died after being tazered by police. the man identified as register nald thomas was armed with a knife and reportedly bipolar. police responsibilitied to an apartment where they found thomas and thord ordered him to drop the knife. police and thomas got in a struggle there and police released a 911 call also.

>> i don't know. >> is he on drugs or anything? >> yes. >> what kind of drugs? >> i don't know. he's high though. i can tell that. . >> family members say thomas had eight children and was not a violent person. two hours south of pasadena protests continue for the shooting of death of a man in el cajon who was gunned down as he pointed a vaping device at officers. of the shooting which we want to warn you could be difficult to watch. >> reporter: you're looking at one of two new videos of the controversial police shooting in el cajon. security tape shows the 38-year old walking around erratically and his sister apparently called 911 when he became distraught learning a friend died.

used simulators in training before but the chief says none quite like this one. >> you have to pay attention and listen to the individual. >> reporter: white was joined by members of the department's training team to unveil its new technology -- a wrap around 300 300-degree simulator meant to help officers learn how to deescalate dangerous situations. >> you can use tazers and tear gas and your glock. >> the new realistic scenarios and lets officers switch from lethal to less lethal options providing street training for officers that traditionally is left to swat teams. >> they need to go in and address the emergency understanding somebody's life

families getting extra financial help from the government. >> reporter: college students and their families take note. the critical financial aid form, the free application for federal student aid or fafsa is available this weekend three months earlier than in years at fafsa.gov. it's used to determine how much money students will get for colleges including grants, scholarships and low interest loans. the release day was moved up to make sure recrept tax information was readily available. a recent analysis found as much as $2.7 billion in free federal grant money went unclaimed last year mainly because of incomplete or unsubmitted forms.

doppler 4000 a handful of sprinkles in the south eastern corner this morn. ing. very little in the way of cloud cover across the state. sprinkles near the campo area. high pressure in control today so for the most part, a quiet weekend. this pressure sliding to the east and the ridge builds in as the storm system moves our way. this is going to set up a really tight pressure gradient in the atmosphere. the difference from this high wait, it is going to be become so windy in the week ahead we will be worried about fire danger and as the colder air comes in, we will be seeing leaves blowing around in the higher elevations. we could crop up storms over the high elevations and maybe the palmer divide. most people stay dry today. nationally a big story here, hurricane matthew went from a

53 degrees on this saturday. from the mountain cam. a colorado man wants to revive train service to carry commuters between salida and eagle. transportation managers are giving the idea a closer look. matt kroschel has the story. >> reporter: trains haven't traveled on these tracks for more than a decade but a colorado man wants to change that. he wants to allow commuters and tourists to use the track.

coming through. the tracks are in great shape. >> reporter: 110 miles of tracks between salida and eagle. >> people have looked at tracks and say let's do something with them. >> reporter: the plan calls for 18 stops in 19 different towns connected the mountain communities. >> it actually connects a bunch of tourists areas. tourists could use it for day trips. >> they would have to build train stations in eagles and centers could use the help. >> reporter: combining a tour it's train and commuter element will allow more people to ride and hopefully economically make more sense. >> it starts with community interest. if the community wants to do it then you can get the state involved and put together a proposal. >> reporter: don't expect to see a train here any time soon. this might take 5-10 years to get approved but if it does,
