acres before firefighters got it under control this afternoon. investigators say witnesses saw a cigarette being tossed from a car and that might have started that fire. firefighters also battling a small fire at a campground near nederland right now. >> right now want to get straight to meteorologist lauren whitney. it's so dry, what a danger. >> it's so dangerous outside right now. it's whipping here even downtown. statewide our winds are so, so strong right now. we have a cold front working its way through and with that we do have our because of that we have really high fire danger in parts of the state right now. that does include denver, south and east in to the plains. we have winds that can gust up to 45 miles per hour and humidity levels down to about 13% in some areas so a lot of dry fuels out there and we also have these really gusty winds. we will get cooler temperatures from this later this week. we're going to talk more about that in just a moment. fire danger is high and tonight when the front passes through fully we'll see calmer conditions out here.

where there have been fire danger out today. >> good afternoon. it's easy to see why. i'm nearly 6 feet tall, and look here, i've got grasses almost to my waist and shoulder in some instances. the vegetation very dry along the front range. some of our tinder in the mountains also very dry combined with the fuel and wind, you've got fire danger. we're off magnolia road outside of nederland where a small fire broke out after 3:00. it's o 355. less than one acre, 30% contained. definitely good news. take a look at this video though. we showed you a piece of this just a minute ago up south of loveland. really not too far from johnson's corner off i-25. we had a fire break out earlier. it did burn at least 3 acres but crews made quick work of getting a handle on that fire which was really some good news. back out here live in nederland, lauren, you mentioned that cold front. let me tell you, it's already

very gusty wind up here in the foothills just northwest of denver. that cold air is on its way to you. >> hasn't quite gotten here yet. the winds are picking up here on the rooftop. we're going to have more on the cold front coming up in just a moment. for now we'll send it back to the studio. >> lauren, hang on. thanks for the update. the presidential campaign has blown in to colorado. republican candidate donald trump is campaigning in our state right now. he'll be at a rally in loveland tonight at 7:00. this afternoon he was at gathering with supporters down in pueblo. >> he addressed a new york times report which said he reported losing more than $900 million. in turn he didn't have to pay taxes for 15 years. >> the unfairness of the tax laws is unbelievable. it's something i've been talking about for a long time despite frankly being a big beneficiary of the laws. >> political specialist shaun boyd live in pueblo for us. you got an exclusive interview

website cbsdenver.com. new polls shows hillary clinton leading donald trump in colorado by 11 points. monmouth university poll shows clinton leading. libertarian gary johnson has 7%. green party candidate jill stein with 3%. tim kaine will campaign in denver a week from today. he'll be here talking about the economy at the national western complex next monday. today the democratic presidential candidate went after donald trump's recently published 1995 she even called for a new law that requires presidential candidates to release their tax returns. clinton says trump left taxpayers to pick up the bill for his failed businesses. >> he abuses his power, games the system, puts his own interests ahead of the country's. it's trump first and everyone else last. >> the clinton campaign has already produced a new tv ad highlighting trump's taxes. libertarian presidential candidate gary johnson also

tonight in denver. he's targeting young voters by speaking at cu south denver in parker. that event also scheduled to begin tonight at 7:00. developing tonight, the investigation after a homeowner tells cbs4 he had to shoot a man trying to break in to his house today. it happened this morning in centennial. in the 14700 block of east aberdeen avenue. that's not far from the intersection of parker road and orchard. jennifer brice gathering more information. you were also able to talk to that homeowner who pulled the trigger. >> yeah, and i got to tell you, he was very calm in how he presented this whole situation, but what a scary situation. he says he was confronted by a man that was ranting, banging at his front door, and that even his boat tires were slashed. he said he fired his gun when bullets came toward his house. >> reporter: police cars surround the centennial

morning. this homeowner says he woke up to the sound of someone trying to kick down his front door. >> came out and the guy is going berserk over whatever, saying oh, he's got a gun coming in to the house. >> reporter: phillips said he fired back with his gun. he said he doesn't know the man but neighbors claim they have seen his car in this area just a few weeks ago. >> weeks before taking pictures of houses in here, the guy kept yelling i own this neighborhood, i own this neighborhood. you've got to get that b to the marina. >> reporter: police say after the man was shot he left in a silver sedan. deputies found him a few blocks away with gunshots. >> apparently nonlife-threatening wounds at this point. he was transported to an area hospital. >> just not making any sense whatsoever. it was just a crazy wild situation. >> police tell me at this point no arrest has been made. they say they have a lot more to

live in centennial, jennifer brice, cbs4 news. new developments now as the colorado supreme court issues a key ruling in the case of two girls accused of making threats at mountain vista high school in highlands ranch. prosecutors have charged those teenagers johnson and higgins as adults. while their attorneys say they should be tried as juveniles. that prompted a legal battle over the girls' mental health records. the state supreme court ruling today sierra johnson does have to produce mental health records or submit to a mental health assessment to get her case transferred back to juvenile court. the justices sent both girls' cases back to district court for further proceedings. still too soon to know for sure if broncos qb trevor siemian will be playing this weekend. >> he went down in sunday's game in tampa with an injured shoulder. backup quarterback paxton lynch took over, did a great job. michael spencer live in centennial for us tonight.

>> it kind of feels like deja vu a little bit if you think back to last year. doesn't it? gary kubiak making no bones about it. trevor siemian is the starting quarterback for the denver broncos. that's if trevor siemian is healthy enough to play. of course trevor was sacked in the 2nd quarter of yesterday's game. he left the game following that sack and is listed as day-to-day, with what the team is calling a sprained shoulder. after he went down, paxton lynch he led three scoring drives and threw his first nfl touchdown pass. despite that performance, if trevor is good to go on sunday, he's still the guy. >> we're going to approach every week to get our best people on the field. trevor is our starter. we're going to give him every opportunity to get there on sunday. i was asked today, could he play without a lot of practice? that would never be a problem with him because he's very bright in what we're doing. we'll push to get there, be as good as we can be against

weather alert tonight. islanders in the caribbean getting ready for hurricane matthew. crews evacuated 13,000 people in the dominican republic from high risk areas. the category 4 hurricane expected to hit neighboring haiti the hardest. the storm has already brought 145-mile-per-hour winds and life-threatening rain. any impact on the u.s. still days away. trial underway for a georgia father accused of leaving his young son in a hot suv to justin harris' 22-month-old son cooper died in 2014. prosecutors say shortly before the boy was left inside, harris posted, quote, i love my son and all but we both need escapes. prosecutors also say harris was inside his office sexting while his son was in the car suffering. attorneys for harris say the death was a tragic accident. right now the latest on kim kardashian west robbed at gunpoint in paris. she left paris immediately after the crime and is now with her

kardashian's mother kris jenner arrived shortly after kim. the reality tv star was in paris for fashion week festivities when five robbers tied kardashian up inside her hotel room. they made off with nearly $11 million worth of jewelry. she wasn't hurt. right now the news and health at 5:00. a man in the united kingdom could be the first to be cured of hiv with a groundbreaking therapy. >> researchers are using a traipz the immune system to spot hidden hiv proteins. then another drug is used to wake dormant t cells which allows the immune system to kill hiv infected cells. >> internationally there are 37 million people with hiv. only around half of whom are on treatments. everyone should be on treatments. >> the trial is in its early stages. it could take years to know if it works.

here. that's because that front is pushing winds down slope. that's why it was warm today and heading our way. a couple showers and thunderstorms but not till you get over the border in to portions of nebraska and you can see rain or snow in the high country. let's take a look at the hour by hour forecast. we do have clouds here. not much going on. we'll see partly cloudy skies overnight. look at the snow over the northern mountains. that's on tuesday morning. that dies down. here comes another surge. here's wednesday morning. snow almost in the exact same place. but now watch thursday. we have another surge o in our area. so yes, lots of snow and look at this in larimer, western about how older county, jefferson county, portions of douglas county, higher elevations might see some snow. really probably see rain but plenty of it in to eastern sections of the state. category 4, was a category 5 so it's weakened just a bit. a bit high over bermuda here. it's going to push it toward florida and in to the carolinas.

northern carolina. as we take a look, lots of sunshine over the eastern section of the u.s. but here comes that front moving right on in to colorado. what's it going to do when it gets here? let's go to lauren whitney in the colorado weather center. >> we're looking at really gusty winds thanks to the front coming through. a lot of you have noticed your temperatures are starting to drop especially off to the west and foothills. berthoud pass, 40 miles per hour. burlington, winds close to 30 to 40 miles per hour so we are very windy across the state. we have this front that's working its way through. with that we do have temperatures that are really going to drop tomorrow with that. this front is moving through and we'll see that kick out of the state overnight. winds are going to calm down quite a bit for us once the front makes its way through. temperatures tomorrow are going to be significantly cooler. 10 to 20 degrees cooler in a lot of areas. you'll notice that as well. with that comes chilly overnight

33 in eagle. low 40s in denver. it certainly will feel like fall tomorrow morning. with that comes some advisories. we're going to have some chilly temperatures out there tonight. >> that's right, those chilly temperatures, we've got the freeze warning out for western sections of the state. winds west at 17. 21% humidity. we have a rise in barometer. temperatures at 75 and 72. as we take a look at this, the we'llford reservoir, that's a pretty shot. dunkly pass with a lot of there. this is conotia pass blanketed in gold. what a unique picture that is. temperatures for tonight, again, mostly in the 30s and 40s over the eastern plains. we'll find 20s and 30s for the high country. 30s to around 40 out west. that chill really comes our way. then for tomorrow we have 60s and 70s over the eastern plains. 40s higher up and out west temperatures only in the 50s and 60s. so you're going to feel that chill. here is that forecast then for

that should be the 40s. tomorrow we'll see temperatures only in the 60s. so that's what it is. 64 degrees on tuesday. wednesday, we're at 67. look at thursday. just 53 for a high. look at those lows. 33 degrees. and then just in time for the weekend we pull out of that 61 and 71. >> how do you do that, ed? just in time for the weekend. [ laughter ] >> there's good timing. it has been an ugly year for street racing in denver. >> there have been deaths and numerous injuries. tonight at 10:00, shows us a tool that police are using to try to bring all of it to an end. >> they gather each week to watch the auto aerobatics. it often leads to racing. >> how do you stop this activity? >> well, i think you stop it with enforcement. >> they're hitting them where it hurts. >> you say police can't stop this. why? >> because it's not stoppable.

colorado rockies announcing today that manager walt weiss has stepped down. weiss's contract was up at the end of the season which ended

his record in colorado wasn't exactly great. he had 283 wins and 365 losses but the club had shown improvement. rocks were seven games better this year than last year but still finished several games below .500. really what this comes down to is walt and general manager never could really see eye to eye. >> having a shared vision and being able to commit to that and being able to challenge each othe we're holding each other accountable to that vision is extremely important. that's a two-way street. i think walt and i worked on that for two years as i said. we just never quite fully got there. >> bridich saying he doesn't exactly have a guy in mind for weiss' job. tonight's centurylink poll question, how do you think weiss

if it looked like paxton lynch picked up right where trevor siemian left off, that's because he did. the broncos rookie was forced in to action but played really well. played a little more than a half yesterday after siemian was injured. he finished the game with 170 passing yards. one touchdown. those numbers aren't great but they're not bad for a guy making his nfl debut. one guy not surprised with how well paxton played was his head coach. >> he's been practicing well. i was asked he really has. he's practiced well. scout team going against our defense every day is making him better and really helps our defense because he's a down the field, throw the ball, makes aqib and chris and those guys really work and practice and i think it showed. his preparation has been good mentally but i don't think it was too big for him once it was time. >> as we told you earlier, trevor siemian listed as day-to-day with a sprained
