campaign 2016, candidates are eyeing colorado voters. donald trump supporters packed rallies in pueblo and loveland. >> place is packed. new record. >> and only cbs4 caught up with the candidate back stage. political specialist shaun boyd joins us now. you were the only one to interview trump today. >> we had a lot to talk about. the last week has been a rough one for donald trump. the latest conflict involving his taxes. the new york times trump's 1995 tax returns showed a loss of more than $900 million. raising questions about his business skills and whether he was able to use those losses for years to avoid paying federal income taxes. trump didn't mention the times but did address the issue. >> as a real estate developer i've legally used the tax laws to my benefit. >> reporter: donald trump defended himself from what he called an alleged tax filing

estate market imploded and he did better than most. >> companies, jobs, and opportunities were lost and lives were destroyed. i was able to use the tax laws of this country and my business acumen to dig out of the real estate mess. but i'm working for you now. i'm not working for trump. >> reporter: he told me he was even willing to close some of the loopholes that benefited him. >> a person like myself that understands it can do things that are frankly pretty amazing. >> reporter: the tax controversy the the republican nominee's campaign. he spent last week feuding with a former miss universe whose weight he criticized. i asked him about accusations of sexism. >> which i'm not. i have great respect for women. i have such respect for women. >> reporter: hillary clinton raised his treatment of women in the last debate. he said he may raise her attempts to discredit women who had affairs with her husband in the next debate. >> i'd like to talk policy. i think policy is much more important so i hope i don't

is how we get treated. >> reporter: in an ominous sign he had another microphone malfunction. >> oh, i thought that was the commission on presidential debates. >> reporter: but he tried to put a positive spin on all the negative press. >> when the ships are down is when i perform the very best. >> trump also talked to me about why he decided to campaign in pueblo, which for decades has gone to democrats. he believes his message on trade area which has been slow to recover from the recession, and he may be right. republican scott at -- scott tipton won pebbly in the last election and cory gardner came within 300 votes of winning it. so pueblo a place we'll want to watch this election. from southern to northern colorado, after his pueblo stop, donald trump traveled 160 miles up to the budweiser event center in loveland. our stan bush there right now.

statements about veterans and post-traumatic stress. >> that's right. earlier in the day donald trump said veterans suffering from ptsd were weak. he must have been talked to by his advisors on the plane ride over here because at the speech we saw this evening, it was a very sedated donald trump. he did talk about some colorado specific issues, energy, the second amendment, and land use, but he spent most of his time at this event as well trying to take the air out of the story about his taxes. >> reporter: donald mentioned the new york times story claiming he hadn't paid federal taxes in 18 years, but on stage tonight, he did respond to it. >> the unfairness of the tax laws is unbelievable. it's something that i've been talking about for a long time. you've heard me talking about it. despite being a very big beneficiary, i must admit. >> reporter: trump defended his finances and didn't say he'd explain more of his tax dealings. >> it's my job always to minimize the overall tax burden.

nominee spoke almost completely from a teleprompter, one of his most disciplined speeches following what might have been the worst week of his campaign. highlighted by a late night twitter tirade about a former beauty queen. today he blamed the press for their coverage. >> you're not going to see this because they never show it. because it's bad to show it. if they show it they're going to see what's happening. >> reporter: a big sell-out no turn-out. trump trying to halt his slide and put the focus back on hillary clinton's e-mails. >> clinton is the ring leader of a criminal enterprise that has corrupted our government at the highest levels and the american people have one chance to stop it. >> trump said tonight that he is winning colorado. though a new monmouth university poll shows he's losing the state right now by 11 points. closing the gap here is critical

house. most maps show him needing colorado in order to win the election. live tonight in loveland, stan bush, cbs4 news. >> colorado hosted another presidential candidate tonight. the libertarian gary johnson spoke at cu south denver. that's in parker. we talked to him beforehand. johnson says the two-party system has run its course. he also talked about colorado's marijuana law. >> denver is the most vibrant city, big city in the united states. i think legalization of with it, not because people are high, but because there's this underlying notion that colorado is about freedom. >> reporter: today's stop is part of johnson's 40-state college tour to expand awareness of third parties. hillary clinton spent her day in ohio. she's been polling better since the first debate. today clinton honed in on the popular topic of trump's 1995

when you're half awake and all that stuff. >> reporter: when phillip came outside his home, he says the man was belligerent. >> the guy kept yelling, i own this neighborhood, i own this neighborhood, so you gotta get that boat down to the marina. just one rant after another. >> reporter: phillip said he tried to engage the man, but then things turned dangerous and shots were fired. >> next thing i know he's got a gun coming to the house. probably three or four in to my house. they were coming through >> reporter: phillip returned fire and the man left. arapaho county deputies found him a few blocks away in this silver sedan. >> the subject actually was shot, apparently nonlife-threatening wounds at this point. he was transported to an area hospital. >> reporter: investigators spent the afternoon inspecting the boat and looking for more shell casings. the other man's health condition is unknown. >> neighbors did tell phillip they think they had seen that

houses. we talked to the arapo county sheriff's office and asked if there would be any charges. they said this is such a bizarre situation, this may take a few more days to flush out. live in centennial, jeff todd, cbs4 news. here's the latest on the fiery rollover crash that killed 5 young people. crash happened on county line road along the arapahoe county elbert county line. investigators say the car was speeding. karen >> despite the wind and cold, several people came out here earlier tonight to the park to remember those five victims who were killed in that tragic accident. you can see that memorial here left behind tonight. dozens of friends and family members came together in the dark just one day after five

violent rollover crash. those who braved the cold here held candles and shared memories of the young lives that were lost so suddenly. manuela and her mother organized the candlelight for all the victims, but also for her cousins, levi and angelo, who she described as funny, outgoing, and always smiling. >> the family needs support, everybody needs it. and just so that we can have a moment for them, how they was tragic. >> it's just hard. i could not imagine it. it just feels heartbreaking. really heartbreaking. they have a whole life ahead of them. >> the family says those teens were out in that area early yesterday morning because they heard that a bridge out there was haunted and they wanted to check it out. each family has a fundraiser page. we have links on how you can

website at cbsdenver.com. developing now, a raging wildfire and mandatory evacuations in southern colorado. it's being called the boula hill fire. southwest of pueblo. more than a thousand people have been evacuated. tonight chris spears live with the mobile weather lab. we know wind today has been a huge problem for fire crews. >> absolutely. the wind and this, all the dry the front range, it has just been a tinder box along the front range with a developing moderate drought. you add in these really strong winds that have been gusting 50, 60 miles per hour, and it's created a lot of problems. just take a look. >> reporter: strong winds and tinder dry vegetation proved dangerous along colorado's front range monday. several fires broke out including this one south of loveland.

southwest of pueblo where the fire exploded, charring thousands of acres within hours. it's expected to burn through the night. on the cold side of the storm, parts of western colorado saw a quick blast of winter with snow that made for some tricky driving over rabbit ears pass. and back out here live we're standing at the end of the runway at the broomfield, the jeff co airport here in broomfield. amazing winds right 35 miles per hour. 33. but over the past two minutes we've been anywhere from 30 to past 50 miles per hour over the past hour. we've had pretty strong gusts here. ed greene, it's going to be a loud night for some people along the front range but those winds should be dying down hopefully soon. fingers crossed. street racing. it's dangerous, even deadly and illegal. writing tickets isn't enough. so they're taking enforcement to

staff. officials say officers are confiscating 400 boxes at a time. the department wants about $125,000. right now jamaica getting drenched by the outer bands of hurricane matthew. roads have washed away forcing some communities to simply fend for themselves. monster storm category 4 now barreling toward haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere. some places there might see 40 inches of rain and devastating guantanamo bay, cuba might be relocating detainees ahead of the hurricane. back in colorado, the wind is the story. >> time to check with ed. >> still pretty gusty around here. we're starting to see things calm down just a little bit. most of the moisture has moved out. north platte has been getting showers and thunderstorms all day long. clouds are moving out of the area. however up in steamboat springs they did see a little light snow today. this is from larry pierce.

you might expect a little bit of snow. that's not a big deal over the northern mountains as this frontal system comes on through. then tomorrow and wednesday we see light snow. take a look at thursday. a very strong cold front pushing through. look at all the snow through larimer county and jefferson county. look at the heavy rains in the northeast. watch this. watch denver. bang. a little bit of snow right there. so on thursday that's at noon, we might see a little snow or rain mixed withno and it hangs around a little bit by 5:00 it slowly begins to clear out and then it's gone. something we're watching. as we are with this hurricane, matthew was a category 5, weakened a little bit to a category 4 but you can't call it a weak storm. 140 miles per hour. moving north northeast at 8. a bermuda high is going to push it to the coast of florida and maybe carolina. this front came through.

what now? i know somebody who knows. let's go to meteorologist lauren whitney in the colorado weather center. >> we're still pretty gusty out there in some areas. you'll notice the western slope has really calmed down from craig to telluride. we had nasty winds earlier and those are starting to mellow out. some areas across the front range, we're still on the windy side. winds about 31 miles per hour and as we take a look at what's going on a little bit closer here in to the denver area again it's still a little bit gusty. we'll see winds stick around for a while longer. winds at 51 miles you'll notice they're pretty strong out there. shifting in to the foothills, strong winds up there as well. nederland close to 36 miles per hour. black hawk, 22. you'll notice it's windy for a little while longer then we'll see those conditions improve. we had our front make its way through. we'll see behind that pretty cool temperatures. tomorrow will be noticeably different and tomorrow morning will be much, much cooler. we have cold overnight lows heading our way. 29 in craig. 41 in grand junction. high country, a lot of upper 20s, low 30s. 42 in denver.

there are warnings out there as well. >> take a look at this. over in western colorado they have a freeze warning out for midnight tonight till 9 a.m. on tuesday. temperatures below that freezing mark. 81s today denver and d.i.a. 56 and 59 is where we started out. should be at 71 and 41. weather watchers, 77 in parker. arvada, 78. 84 in brush today. 57s now with a west wind at 23. look at it airport. nice shot here from custer county. look at this one from karen mather. this is trappers lake and the flat tops wilderness area. pretty shot. as is this one from cat ross. look at this. this is interesting, lafayette. you see the color of the flowers almost the same as the sunset. temperature 30s and 20s. 20s and 30s higher up. out west, temperatures in the

tomorrow cooler temperatures. we'll find 40s for the mountains. out west temperatures in the 50s to the mid 60s. here's that denver forecast for tonight. we will see partly cloudy skies. winds will slowly be decreasing. 44 and 42. then tomorrow partly cloudy skies. cooler. look at this, only in the mid 60s tomorrow and then for the next several days 67 on wednesday. look at thursday, 53. and that's when we might get a little rain mixed with snow right here in the city. 61 and 71 just in time for the weekend and forget columbus day, nice, 73 d >> looks great, ed. thank you. the spike in street racing has police using a new tactic. towing the vehicles instead of writing tickets. some critics call that unfair. but cbs4 investigator rick sallinger shows us police believe it might save lives. >> reporter: we watched from the crowd using a cell phone camera. what was taking place here was not only dangerous, it was

>> they just kind of bring their cars to maybe like show off what they have or something. but they start racing. >> reporter: when we first observed this parking lot at federal and arkansas, it was packed with crowds cheering on the spinning cars. >> how do you stop this activity? >> well, i think you stop it with enforcement. >> reporter: and that enforcement is designed to strike the racers where it the most. when we returned, there were only two cars in the once crowded lot. both police cars. the enforcement is much more than just stopping speeders and giving out tickets. police are making good on that threat to tow and impound vehicles under the city of denver public nuisance law. >> why are you towing this one? >> they were racing down federal. >> how fast do you think they were going? >> faster than the speed limit. >> reporter: the cars or trucks

to get them back, there are storage and civil fees that could run in the thousands of dollars. plus criminal charges. in some cases, the vehicles are seized. >> i think it's effective. i think it's a deterrent for the type of activity that we used that against. >> reporter: we were told this truck was being removed after it was involved in a hit and run. these tow truck drivers see a lot. >> folks coming up here and want to spin the tires cg lights. just trying to show off. >> reporter: several of those we talked with said they feel police are stopping cars for no good reason and they doubt the enforcement effort will bring street racing to an end. >> it's not stoppable. >> why is it unstoppable? >> it's like trying to close a dealership down. >> reporter: the message from police is, race and you'll lose

it didn't exactly come as a big surprise but the walt weiss era in denver is officially over. after four years as skipper, weiss stepping down today. his contract was up so stepping down probably just a matter of phrasing. the players seemed to like weiss a whole lot. upper management, not so much. the rockies improved on the field this year albeit slightly. however, that wasn't enough to
