f0 hi, everybody. good to have you with us. welcome to the cbs4 morning news. this is the news on tuesday, october 4th. i'm alan gionet. >> i'm britt moreno. thanks for joining us. did you make it through the wind yesterday? let's find out what's on for today. ashton, it was pretty hefty out there. >> yes, definitely windy. wind through colorado and the front range today, but not like yesterday. we'll call it breezy instead of windy. the wind associated with the cold front that swept through last night. this morning we're from 10 to even 25 degrees colder than yesterday at this time.

in the denver metro area. it's 46 in wheat ridge. 44 in lakewood and 46 degrees in thornton. jacket definitely necessary if you're going to be heading out here early this morning. by 9:00 a.m. we'll still be in the 40s. it will be a noticeable change compared to yesterday. high today of 66. that's 15 degrees cooler than it was yesterday and about 5 degrees below normal for this time of year. another cold front is on the way. now let's check e this is i-25 and arapahoe this morning. we've got some ramp closures and restrictions in place, pretty typical arapahoe to i-25 as that construction continues. we've been watching from our cbs4 tech center cam, that's what that should be, and there are some lights off to the side. looks like the system is shut down there. i can tell you it's pretty much green across the denver metro

wildfire is burning in southern colorado. >> reporter: good morning. we learned last night from south metro they are sending two engines to respond to that fire, as well as a strike team leader. the fire was 2400 acres last night. let's take a look at video from last night. that information coming from south metro on monday evening around 7:00, and things have been changing since then. more than a thousand people are forced to evacuate or leave their homes because of this fire happening in southern colorado. again, those two engines have been sent from our area to help. fire crews expect to get more aircraft up and fighting the fire once the sun comes up this morning. here's a little bit about what

deal with yesterday. >> the house below us was on fire, so by the time i got up here they had already had the road blocked off. he grabbed a few things and got down here. >> reporter: so at this point we're told that at least seven buildings have been destroyed by the fire and it continues to grow in size. there's no estimate on containment, b far. let's take a look at hurricane matthew now from the international space station. this shows a massive storm system over the carribean. there's your eye right there. heavy rains and winds as high as 145 miles per hour are pounding southwest haiti. that makes it a category 4 storm out of a possible 5.

all weekend, striking fear. kingston's, the nation's capital, home to almost 6,000 people is a virtual ghost town. >> jamaica will be hit in some shape or form by a hurricane. that will mean heavy rains, high winds, storm surge, and that will cause significant damage. >> reporter: but matthew's bullseye could be nearby haiti. winds around 140 miles could flatten the landscape of flimsy homes. flash flooding, mudslides and storm surge threaten people living in the poorest country in the western hemisphere. the latest track really maintains the strength. it stays a major category 3 or stronger hurricane. matthew will then move north to eastern cuba, where it could linger for 10 hours. 350,000 cubans have been evacuated. then as it approaches the eastern seaboard, a track that

florida coast line, georgia, south carolina and north carolina coastlines. >> there are some worries this track could slip farther up, and governors of south carolina and north carolina are declaring a state of emergency. it is likely a hurricane warning will be issued for florida today. hannah daniels is live on the floor of the new york stock exchange for us this es >> reporter: hello. real estate and utility stocks led a broad decline yesterday. futures now are pointing up. wells fargo took another hit. the state of illinois is spending $30 billion in investment activity with the bank. california made a similar move last week. today google will hold one of

legally used the tax laws to my benefit. >> reporter: donald trump defended himself, saying the real estate market implodeed and he did better than most. >> jobs and opportunities were lost and lives were destroyed. i was able to use the tax laws of this country to dig out the real estate mess. i'm working for you now, not trump. >> reporter: he told me he the loopholes that benefited him. >> people like myself that understand it can do some things that are pretty amazing. >> reporter: he spent last week feuding with the former miss universe whose weight he criticized. i asked him about accusations of sexism. >> which i'm not. i have great respect for women. i have such respect for women. >> reporter: hillary clinton raised his treatment of women in the last debate.

attempts to discredit women who had affairs with her woman in the next debate. >> i think policy is much more important and i hope i don't discuss that. we'll see what happens. we'll see how levels of respect go and how we get treated. >> reporter: he had another microphone malfunction. >> oh, i thought that was the commission on presidential debates. >> reporter: but he tried to put a positive spin on all the negative press. >> when the chips are down is when i perf >> trump also talked about why he decided to campaign in pueblo, which for decades has traditionally gone to democrats. he said he believes his message on trade and on jobs will resonate in that area. a new cbs poll shows hillary clinton leading trump by 4 points and this comes as we are now five weeks away from election day. yesterday clinton was in ohio for the first time in about a

she is 5 points behind trump. she wants to release new ads involving trump and his taxes. her biggest challenge is trying to attract her share of white working class voters. cbs found americans without a college degree favored trump 2 to 1. 50 degrees in denver. volcano in mexico forces hundreds out of their homes. ahead this morning, a good look

flu vaccine. researchers in canada and new york are reporting a step forward in the development of a universal flu shot. scientists say using antibodies that can recruit white blood cells to destroy infected cells may help in making a one-time shot more effective than seasonal flu vaccine z. people who live in the area of economic opportunity report fewer days of poor health. researchers found better living physical and mental health overall, with people also adopting healthier behaviors. new data on medicare patients with blood cancer suggest high initial costs can delay access to life saving drugs. doctors say more than 30% of such patients are starting therapy late, more than six months after diagnosis. volcano in mexico is throwing lava and forcing people out of their homes.

and its forced people living in the south to evacuate. authorities say the evacuees have to remain in shelters for at least another 24 hours. but it keeps on putting out the lava. it's about 400 miles west of mexico city. ashton, that's pretty, but it's dangerous. absolutely, for sure. seems like we're talking about a lot of dangerous weather lately, of course with hurricane matthew and we'll talk for us, it's a cooler, much cooler start to the day compared to yesterday. most of us are in the 40s thanks to the cold front that passed by last night. some areas in the foothills are in the 30s. still above freezing. confer at 35 degrees. 37 in genesee. 45 in stapleton. 47 degrees in greenwood village in the tech center. so a jacket will be in order this morning. you'll notice the difference compared to yesterday.

overall another sunny day. it's going to be dry across the vast majority of colorado today. there may be a couple of snowflakes over the north central mountains. nothing much. it's going to be just a couple of flurries maybe over rabbit ears pass. thunderstorms to the east of us, nebraska, kansas, storms ahead of the cold front that moved over us last night. what will happen is that front will gradually make its way to the east, allowing system to come on in. that will arrive wednesday night into thursday, bringing us a reinforcing shot of cooler air. we'll struggle to even reach 50 on thursday. and that second system has a little more moisture associated with it, and could be a couple of showers thursday, but not expecting much in terms of rain. cooler today, topping out at 66. a little bit of wind, but nothing like yesterday. tomorrow 67. thursday we drop to 51. 40% chance of rain thursday.

back into the 70s. let's get a check on the traffic. flashing lights out there. this is one of those, not an accident, just getting their day ruined. i-70 airport boulevard. if you're late to the airport, you'll be really late if you start pushing out the speeds. looks like they are out there trying to enforce that this morning, so just beware. a lot of volume along i-70 already this morning. from our tech center cam, flashing lig northbound direction. nothing blocking traffic. and lane restrictions i-25 at colfax. but across the denver metro area looking like a great drive. up into the high country watch out, we have maintenance work going on along i-70 at the eisenhower and johnson tunnels. outside of that, it could be a windy drive, especially along highway 40 out to winter park. joel, thanks a lot.

denver has police towing vehicles instead of just writing tickets. some critics call it unfair, but cbs4's rick salinger say police believe it might save lives. >> reporter: we watched from the crowd using a cell phone camera what is taking place here was not only dangerous, it was illegal. it's a sunday night ritual here along south federal boulevard. >> they just bring their cars to kind of like, i know, maybe show off what they something. but they start racing. >> reporter: when we first observed this parking lot at federal and arkansas, it was packed with crowds cheering on the spinning cars. how do you stop this activity? >> well, i think that you stop it with enforcement. >> reporter: and that enforcement is designed to strike the racers where it hurts the most. when we returned, there were only two cars in that once

[sirens] >> reporter: the enforcement is much more than stopping speeders and giving out tickets. police are making good on that threat to tow and impound vehicles under the city of denver's public nuisance law. >> why are you towing this one? >> they were racing down federal. >> how fast do you think they were going? >> faster than the speed limit. >> reporter: the cars or trucks are usually held for a month. to get them back, there are storage and civil fees that could run in the thousands of dollars. plus criminal charges. in some cases the vehicles are seized. >> i think it's effective. i think it's a deterrent for the type of activity that we use that against. >> reporter: we were told this truck was being removed after it was involved in a hit-and- run. these tow truck drivers see a lot. >> coming up here and want to spin the tires coming off the lights. just trying to show off. >> reporter: several of those we talked with said they feel police are stopping cars for no

enforcement efforts will bring street racing to an end. >> it's unstoppable. >> reporter: why is it unstoppable? >> it's like trying to close a dealership down. [sirens] >> reporter: but the message from police is, race and you'll lose your car. rick salinger, cbs4 news. it is the most talked about shoulder in the state of colorado. broncos' quarterback trevor sin spraining a shoulder in sunday's game. let the quarterback drama begin. or not. kubiak saying trevor is the starting quarterback. whether he'll start sunday, that we'll have to wait and see. trevor left the game just before half time, which means we got to see paxton lynch. 170yards and a touchdown. could have been worse. despite that, the broncos say they're staying with trevor.
