the western slope. mason, walden 35 degrees. robert peck northwest arvada reporting 42. yesterday at this time it was about 55 in the arvada area. definitely a difference. the kids will feel it at the bus stop. a jacket is necessary. 44 at the bus stop this morning. more on your weather straight ahead. now let's check the traffic with joel. we have an accident, this is the eastbound direction of c- 470 to the east of bowles. watch out for that. you're going to have flashing ligh we're seeing i-70 near the eisenhower and johnson tunnels, snow. >> there it is. you said it. happening now we have a wildfire burning in southern colorado, whipped by winds and fueled by dry conditions. resources from the metro area are going down to help fight this fire. let's go to shawn chitnis in centennial this morning to tell us about it. hey, shawn. >> reporter: alan, good

engines last night as well as a strike team leader to help taking on that fire near pueblo. more than a thousand people were forced out of their homes by this fire and we're told that 500 buildings have been evacuated in the area. now, the fire crews in the area expect that more aircraft should be up and fighting that fire once the sun comes out this morning. we're told the fire started on the hill and then jumped past highway 70, high winds were a key factor in creating challenge and getting that fire under control. so far, people leaving their homes last night said the smoke in the air was just terrible. >> my husband saw the smoke and heard explosions just a little after 1:00. and then he heard the fire engines and i was working. and then the power went off about 3:30. >> reporter: so far the fire has destroyed seven buildings but no reports of any injuries.

headquarters, shawn chitnis. the stage is set in virginia for the first and only vice presidential debate of the campaign season. this is a chance for both mike pence and tim kaine to defend their running mates. it will be moderated by cbs's elaine kiano. here's craig boswell with a preview. >> reporter: mike pence took aim at hillary clinton's record as secretary of state in virginia. >> our allies are less secure. our enemies are more emboldened and that all changes the day donald trump becomes president. >> reporter: both vice president allonym knees are expected to go to great lengths defending their running mates tonight, which could prove harder for the indiana governor. >> given the controversy in the newspapers about trump's tax returns and other issues he's

in public life, i think maybe mike pence has a tougher job here in terms of making up for lost ground. >> reporter: pence also sought to make light of trump's recent controversies last night. >> we can parse that. he tweeted this. they turn on the television the next morning and donald trump is still standing stronger than ever before. >> reporter: tonight's debate comes a little more than a week debate and in the first poll taken since that debate, clinton has a 4-point national league. >> looks good. just got to be myself. >> reporter: clinton and trump meet for their second presidential debate this sunday in missouri. craig boswell, cbs news, farmville, virginia. let's talk about the temperature change. you get up this morning you go,

mobile lab now, live in lakewood at the federal center light rail station, where folks have to do a little bit of standing from time to time. >> reporter: yeah, a little bit of standing and make sure to dust off those jackets. that's what i did this morning. that's what i said, i said, whoa, it's much chillier than it has been in the past. 47 degrees now is what our mobile weather lab is showing and a little bit of wind to remind you it is getting colder. i know a lot of you at home are thinking 47, we've been through much worse. and we have been through much catch the light rail you're going to notice that change in temperature. in fact, we saw a couple standing here shivering. we want to talk to them to find out how they felt about the drop in temperature. >> i am chilly. it's a little cooler than i thought it would be this morning. >> reporter: how do you -- >> this is earlier than i usually get up. >> reporter: how do you feel about this cool weather? >> i'm a little surprised it's so cool, yeah. it was so nice yesterday and everything. >> reporter: for a bigger

going to look like, let's check in with ashton. good morning, ashton. good morning. a noticeable change. temperatures anywhere from 10 to 25 degrees cooler than we were yesterday at this time. limon 18 degrees colder. we're about 15 degrees colder here in the denver area. we've got anywhere from 20 to 25 degrees colder in the high country. that would put aspen at 31 this morning. it's 46 in boulder. 45 in numbers just updating. 51 at dia. city park at 46. it's 46 in englewood. 48 in thornton and the same now in -- 9:00 a.m., 49. by noon, 61. and a high temperature today right around 66 degrees. for comparison purposes, yesterday we were at 81. you'll notice the difference. we have yet another cold front on the way. that comes in total night into

traffic with joel. little tough spot along c- 470 in the eastbound direction. that's as you get near bowles. you can see the flashing lights. i know it's blurry and dark out this morning, so it's difficult to see. but you can see some of the delays in that southbound direction as you get past 285. we have ongoing construction work through there. some cones that are up as they continue to do paving operations. take winter park, watch out along i- 70. one of the things we've noticed on the cameras is a slight dusting of something light. >> what might that be? here's a look at hurricane matthew now from the international space station. a lot of white, but those are deep, powerful clouds. the images show this massive storm system over the carribean and there is the eye on the right side of your screen. heavy rain and winds as high as 145 miles per hour are pounding

possible 5. >> reporter: jamaica has felt hurricane matthew's outer bands all weekend, striking fear of its fury into residents. kingston, the capital, is a virtual ghost town. >> jamaica will be hit in some way, shape or form by a high winds, storm surge, and that will cause significant damage. >> reporter: but matthew's bullseye could be nearby haiti. winds around 140 miles per hour could flatten the landscape of flimsy homes. flash flooding, mudslides and storm surge threaten people living in the poorest country in the western hemisphere. the latest track really maintains the strength. so it stays a major category 3 or stronger hurricane.

eastern cuba, where it could linger for 10 hours. 350,000 cubans have been evacuated. then as it approaches the eastern seaboard, a track that will bring it up along the florida coastline, along the georgia, south carolina and north carolina coastlines. >> it's likely hurricane watches will be issued for florida later today, as there's a lot of concern about this turning west. the governors of and florida have both declared states of emergency. one crash took the lives of five young people on sunday. family and friends are remembering their loved ones. the group died along the elbert county and arapahoe county line in a fiery crash. our rick salinger talked with the grieving family of two brothers who died. >> reporter: like a picture post card, the five who died are being remembered in sorrow by friends and family. cynthia sanchez is the

died. >> they were good boys. just out having fun as teenagers and this terrible thing happened. >> reporter: angelo andazola had been laid off from his job remodeling homes. his brother, levi, who is believed to be driving, was training to be a barber. what were they doing? >> apparently the certain highway was supposed to be haunted and they were kids and tragedy came to us. now we don't have our boys. >> reporter: legend has it there was a deadly accident here two decades ago at what is called third bridge. that bridge is now believed to be haunted, and a magnet for adventure seeking kids. >> our hearts go out to the other victims' families as well. we're so sorry this happened. >> reporter: ironically the car

mexico city. ashton, the power of that is awesome. yes, indeed. the power of nature, right? and of course we've got the powerful hurricane out in the carribean, making its way toward the united states. it's looking more and more likely that matthew could have an impact on florida this week, and the carolinas in the weekend. back here at home, temperatures are cooler. we're still far above freezing. freezing weather not expected until friday morning. but still, and 45 in thornton. it's 37 up the hill in evergreen. temperatures anywhere from 5 to 15 degrees cooler than they were at this time yesterday. aurora, 21 degrees colder than it was at this time monday morning. clear skies. mostly clear day. we have had a couple of snowflakes flying around the north central mountains and could be a few more today, but certainly no accumulating snowfall. notice this line of thunderstorms in kansas and nebraska, that's where our cold

through last night. we'll say goodbye to that front and start to monitor the next one coming in tomorrow night into thursday. it will drop temperatures another 15 degrees. we'll see rain showers in denver thursday. there could be a snowflake or two mixed in, especially for the palmer divide, golden and into the foothills. latest model data suggesting this front could bring anywhere from 2 to 6 inches of snow for the higher mountains. we're talking the approaches to the eisenhower and tunnels. that would be on thursday. would be the first significant snowfall for the mountains. high temperatures today, we'll see 40s and 50s in the high country. 50s and 60s out west. 60s and 70s on the eastern plains. and 60s here along the front range, including 66 in denver. about the same for those of you in boulder and fort collins. for tomorrow 67. 51 on thursday. rain showers in the forecast. a few snowflakes, especially the south and west sides of town. mountain snow on thursday. friday back up to 59 after

morning. then 70s for the weekend, joel, let's check traffic. way to wrap that up in a good way. >> i'm trying. >> in time for the weekend, too. c-470 in bowles, east of bowles there, we've got an accident. you can see the flashing lights, now that we've got more volume it's a little brighter and you can see the extent of that accident. that will cause some delays. folks already delayed getting past 285 by quincy as they continue to do paving operations. across the denver metro ar but that's really our only trouble spot. look up into the high country, got that drive along u.s. 40 out to winter park. you have u.s. 6 over loveland pass. do you see all the slowing we have up there? that's because we've seen a dusting of snow along the roadway in that direction. be prepared for winter driving conditions. here we are southbound coming into town, watching the speeds dip down into the 40s as the morning commute gets underway. thank you very much.

my husband saw the smoke and heard explosions. >> good morning, everyone. this is the news at morning. a fire has closed schools this morning. it has uprooted many people's lives in southern colorado. evacuations have grown overnight as a fast moving wildfire burns in pueblo county. we're covering that story and feeling the start of a big weather change as the cooler temperatures move in. a little slice of winter is returning to parts of colorado. close your eyes if you don't want to see this on rabbit ears pass.

we're waking up to the first of two cold fronts. you and the kids will probably need the sweater this morning. we'll check in with ashton altieri in just a little bit. first, let's get started, jamie leary live in the mobile weather lab out in the elements. it gets colder in january, but jamie, this is a change. >> reporter: this is definitely a big change. now mobile weather lab showing 49 degrees. little bit of wind out here, too. it's picking up. just to emphasize how cold it is bundled up. i want to show you guys something. i made our producers dig up footage from the last time photographer eddie castro and i were out here. incredible conditions. the snow was coming in sideways, it was wet and heavy. the snow plows could barely keep up. obviously a stark contrast from today. it is coming. we're seeing a significant temperature drop. some people not so prepared.
