we're waking up to the first of two cold fronts. you and the kids will probably need the sweater this morning. we'll check in with ashton altieri in just a little bit. first, let's get started, jamie leary live in the mobile weather lab out in the elements. it gets colder in january, but jamie, this is a change. >> reporter: this is definitely a big change. now mobile weather lab showing 49 degrees. little bit of wind out here, too. it's picking up. just to emphasize how cold it is bundled up. i want to show you guys something. i made our producers dig up footage from the last time photographer eddie castro and i were out here. incredible conditions. the snow was coming in sideways, it was wet and heavy. the snow plows could barely keep up. obviously a stark contrast from today. it is coming. we're seeing a significant temperature drop. some people not so prepared.

we ran into one long-time colorado resident and she was prepared. >> it's breezy out and it's cold so you have to dress warm. >> reporter: how do you feel about it, winter of course coming? do you like cold weather? >> not really, but i've been in colorado all my life, so i'm almost used to it. not quite used to it, but almost. >> reporter: and definitely i know a lot of people saying 50 degrees not that significant. here waiting to catch the train, it feels chilly, especially when the wind picks up. for a bigger picture, let's check in with ashton. good morning. good morning to you, jamie. of course yesterday afternoon it was 81 degrees. that's one of the reasons why 49 or 50 feels so chilly. yes, of course by the time we get to december and january this won't feel bad at all. but considering the warm weather we've had recently, it is quite the change. take a look at the temperature

11 degrees colder in the -- boulder meanwhile is at 50. it's 45 in fort collins. and 47 currently at dia. coming up we'll talk about our next cold front which arrives tomorrow night. nicer freeze of the season in the forecast -- first freeze of the season in the forecast. let's check in with joel. following another trouble spot this morning. southbound coming down into town. it's near 88th. you can see into the 20s and 30s. 12 minutes from 120th to i-70. a destructive pueblo county wildfire is getting worse. some of these flames have really climbed almost to 100 feet into the sky. all the people living in the small mountain community of beulah valley are now out of their homes and our shawn chitnis is live at the south metro fire station where they'll be sending help, and they'll need it.

that as well. but south metro fire tweeting out last night that two engines as well as a strike team leader have been sent out to help with those efforts. we do know more than a thousand people were forced out of their homes because of this fire yesterday. again, this is the beulah hill fire near pueblo. about 500 buildings have also been evacuated. fire crews expect to get more aircraft up once the sun comes up this morning. yesterday the fire jumped from high winds have made controlling that fire a challenge. evacuees say they didn't have much time to get out because of the danger around their homes. >> the house below us was on fire, so by the time i got up here they had already had the road blocked off. he grabbed a few things and got down here. >> reporter: there are seven buildings that have been

no injuries yet. shawn chitnis, cbs4 morning news. thank you for that. this is new, a disturbing find in western fremont county. a hiker found human remains in a remote area last month. investigators say the man who died was probably between the ages of 25 and 50. the sheriff's office is asking for help identifying him and learning how he died. we know the name of the man killed on long's peek. scott kourlis apparently slipped and fell. it happened at one of the most popular mountain sections. he was a well known doctor in greeley. hurricane matthew is pounding haiti's peninsula. it made landfall as a category 4 storm. here's the view from our doppler 4000. the storm is moving through the carribean with winds up to 140

here. the governors of north carolina and florida have already declared states of emergency because of concern that this hurricane could take a more westerly track and smash into the united states. here's a photo from the international space station. this shows you matthew's well defined eye. that storm will likely flatten the landscape of flimsy homes in haiti. jamaica has seen already. kingston, the capital with almost 600,000 people, is almost a virtual ghost town. let's get over to ashton, it could make its way to the united states. where is it heading now? >> here's what's been happening, britt. the latest tropical weather models continue to take the track of matthew farther and farther to the west, bringing it closer to florida by friday, and then possibly the carolinas as we get into the upcoming

between cuba and haiti. as it moves north towards the florida peninsula it is expected to weaken a little bit. cat 3 or above is considered a major hurricane and it could still be a category 3 as it impacts the east coast potentially of florida by friday. then it would likely turn into a category 2 storm as it moves north towards north and south carolina. we'll continue to keep you posted on matthew. obviously if you have travel plans to florida, the carolinas, anywhere in the southeastern east coast, you sure. 47 degrees right now at dia. it's 50 in boulder. most of us around the denver boulder and fort collins areas are in the 40s. a big change from yesterday. make sure you're prepared for the chill. by noon 61. then a high temperature today of 66. with lots of sunshine, honestly won't feel that bad. cooler than yesterday. here's the traffic. good morning, ashton. this is up near the eisenhower and johnson tunnels. look at those cars pulled off.

up. why? it's icy conditions up there to the eisenhower johnson mountain tunnels. here we are up into the high country and you can see the line of red we have and along i- 70 as well, as there are some winter driving conditions there. across the denver metro area, we've got a little stall 14th and speer. accident eastbound direction of c 470 getting past bowles, causing slowing. and southbound coming into town an accident at 88th that's closed off a portion of the hov lane. speeds accident. 14 minutes to get from thornton to denver. again, alan, if you're about to get in the car, turn on our news partners for the latest traffic and cbs4 weather together. joel, thanks a lot. a judge will be sentencing a former school bus driver who crashed with children on board today. this is a case we've followed since december. elizabeth burris initially told investigators she had been

at the time of the crash. five of them were hurt. there you see the bus rolled on its side. prosecutors dropped the dui and child abuse charges part of the plea agreement. the vice presidential candidates get their turn on the debate stage tonight. both will likely go to great lengths defending their running mates. mike pence is under pressure to defend donald trump particularly over his tax returns revealed over the weekend. tim kaine will try to keep clinton's side. it's likely they'll be spending a lot of time going after each others' records. >> mike pence is a guy who believes marriage equality will cause "a societal collapse." he insulted brave lgbt soldiers. >> when tim kaine was governor he tried to raise taxes by $4 billion. >> the debate starts at 7:00 tonight. today donald trump is in

le spent time in pueblo and loveland yesterday. trump spent a majority of his time defending himself from what he calls an alleged tax filing from the 90s. saying the real estate market imploded and he did better than most. >> companies, jobs and opportunities were lost and lives were destroyed. as tens of thousands of people were put out of work. i was able to use the tax laws of this country and my business acumen to dig out of the real estate mess. >> today hillary clinton has two stops in pennsylvania. she will meet donald trump for the second presidential debate this sunday in missouri. happening today, you can weigh in on the future of denver. city planners are working on what we ought to look like over the next 20 years. they are looking for ideas now on anything from housing to traffic congestion and city leaders say they have already heard from a lot of people who

welcome back, everyone. here's brand-new video out this morning of a brush fire in larimer county. this is what it looked like last night near north highway 287 and west larimer county road 54 east. the flames have already destroyed trees and brush along the highway. no that's the good news. firefighters contained the flames to 5 acres. the winds whip up and it is this dry, we get fires. here's ashton as we look at the weather and this change. there's the wind. >> the u.s. and state flags certainly whipping around a bit at mile high this morning. today will not be as windy as it was yesterday. we do not have that red flag warning in effect like we had yesterday. again, there will still be a breeze and it will be much

of the season to come friday, october 7th, which is our average first freeze. rarely does it actually come on the date of the average. but looks like that could happen this year. last year our first freeze didn't come until later in october, the 25th. i thought we'd throw in our average first snowfall in denver, october 19th. last year it didn't come until the first week in november. it's 46 in county. 48 brighton. 50 louisville. similar in boulder. 30s up the highly for highway 285 corridor and bailey and confer. 12 degrees colder there this morning than yesterday morning. 18 degrees colder for aurora and parker. clear skies throughout the front range. it will be another sunny day for us. there could be a couple of snowflakes in the north central mountains, but nothing significant. cold front that rolled through overnight making its way through kansas and nebraska

thunderstorms today. 6:00p.m. tomorrow front will be in wyoming and tomorrow night it moves into colorado. that's mountain snow you see. rain along the front range. the front will bring in a 15- degree temperature drop for the higher mountains including approaches to the johnson and eisenhower tunnels could see 2 to 6 inches of snow. front range, cold rain with maybe a few snowflakes especially for the palmer divide, west side of town, golden and higher foothills as well. 66 today. 67 tomorrow. down to 51 thursday with ra mountains. friday back up to 59 with sunshine. and joel, we warm up for the weekend, back into the 70s, my friend. good job, and just in time for me to clean up the leaves in my yard. eisenhower and johnson tunnels, a different situation into the high country now. you get up over the high mountain passes, possibility of icy conditions. you can see the sheen along the road as they had some snow which came through last night. look at the cars pulled off to the side of the road.

no chain restrictions are in place heading up into the high country. there is construction going on as you get near the eisenhower and johnson tunnels. the drive out to winter park looking a little better now along highway 40. you get along i-70 you get closer to town should be a great drive. southbound along i-225 it's loading up down to the tech center. we have this accident traveling along c-470, just past bowles in that eastbound direction. southbound coming into town, got a little accident. speeds dipping into the behind it. reports it involved a motorcycle as well. 15 minutes from thornton to denver, with speeds averaging down into the 30s. alan. joel, thank you very much. you'll soon pay more for holiday travel and chipotle adds a new menu item. this is the news from wall street. hannah daniels live on the floor of the new york stock

new video from overnight of more protests over the 18-year- old shot and killed by police in southern los angeles. protestors marched through the streets, but they did appear to be calmer this night than nights before. police shot and killed carnell snell after a chase saturday. snell reportedly had a gun in his left hand and turned in the direction of officers. officers fired six bullets. police were not cameras. people are demanding to see security video from nearby businesses. crews are working 12-hour shifts to clear debris from the new jersey transit train crash. here's new video it show you how bad the destruction is at the terminal. crews have yet to retrieve a data recorder from the train's front car. a data recorder in the rear of the train was not working on the day of the crash. and here's a question for you, which denver quarterback is set to play atlanta this sunday?

fire, shawn. >> reporter: alan, that's right. south metro has sent two fire engines as well as a strike team leader. they are there this morning and we could expect others to head that way as well. now we know more than a thousand people have been evacuated, forced out of their homes. same goes for 500 buildings in the area. we're told this is all happening near pueblo at the beulah hill fire. high winds a key factor in making it difficult to that fire. the flames jumped from the hill over highway 78 yesterday. crews hoping to more help from the air this morning when the sun comes out. you can see from video yesterday the flames transformed the sky and evacuees telling us the smoke was terrible as they were leaving their homes. >> my husband saw the smoke and heard explosions just a little after 1:00. then he heard the fire engines, and i was working. and then the power went off

have been destroyed so far, but no injuries reported yet. live at south metro headquarters, shawn chitnis, cbs4 morning news. thank you for that. happening this morning, a denver mother now charged with shooting and killing her husband is going to face a judge. police say xa jaime killed her husband with their children inside. the justice department is awarding the department an $875,000 federal grant. the pueblo chief said earlier this year his department was dramatically understaffed as pueblo deals with budget short falls. time for weather and traffic. ashton is back and out of the wind and on the roof. that must have been brisk. that's a great word for it,

laughing at calling this cold. but compared to 81 degrees yesterday afternoon, yes, it is quite the change. in fact, take a look at the wind speeds around the area. honestly, they're not that bad. castle rock, 14 miles per hour. westminster 15 miles per hour. broomfield 10 miles per hour. just enough to make a difference and make the wind noticeable. temperatures meanwhile are in the 40s for most neighborhoods. compare our current temperatures to where we were 24 hours ago. ten to 15 degrees ld on this tuesday morning. we also have clear skies. it is going to be a dry day across most of the state. the exception being the high country, as joel has been talking about, we have a couple of snowflakes flying around. wind in the high country helping to make it look worse than it is on the cdot cameras. still, light snow possible with very little, if any, accumulation this morning. here's the cold front that rolled through last night and early this morning. our next front will be in wyoming by late in the day tomorrow. and then it will enter colorado

snow, accumulating snow. we'll see a few rain showers, cold rain showers along the front range. this next front will drop temperatures 15 degrees for the higher mountains, including the approaches to the tunnels, 2 to 6 inches of snow. this is going to be tomorrow night into thursday, remember. then for the front range, we'll see mainly just cold rain. there could be a few snowflakes mixed in for anybody. it's most likely along the palmer 285 corridor, could see minor accumulations. 60s lower elevations. couple of 70s possible to the kansas state line. burlington, lamar, mid-70s. we'll see 40s and 50s for highs in the mountains today. 50s and 60s out west. 66 here in denver. 67 coming up tomorrow. and down to 51 with the next front for thursday. cold rain showers. friday back up to 59 after our first freeze. season friday morning.

involve i think a motorcycle at last check. then the accident southbound coming into town. we have speeds dipping from the 20s into the teens. this is at 88th. 17 minutes on that drive from thornton to denver. new numbers out this morning show distracted driving crashes rising in the u.s. the national safety council says accidents, deadly accidents jumped nearly 9% last year over 2014. cell phone caused distractions led to 1.6 million year. that's roughly a quarter of all accidents. britt, got to put down that phone. i know it's hard. got to put it down. great point. coming up next, we'll go live to virginia with a preview of tonight's vice presidential debate. and we're going to show you a denver police officer's kind gesture to a soldier at dia. > it is the most talked about shoulder in the state of colorado. broncos' quarterback trevor siemian listed day-to-day after

haven't worn this coat since the snow was flying. it's 50 degrees. that's not terrible. when you have to wait outside like these commuters do, it feels brisk. i want to show you something really quickly. i asked our producers to dig up footage from the last time eddie and i were here. it was mayhem as far as the snow was concerned. this is from march. last time i was here, snow blowing sideways. plows barely able to keep up. it's nothing like th but it is coming. those temperatures are dropping. we've seen commuters shivering. some of them not so prepared. we saw a couple doing just that, standing here waiting for the train shivering. i think they were a little caught offguard by cold temperature. >> it's chilly. it's a little cooler than i thought it would be. this is earlier than i usually get up. >> reporter: how do you feel about this cool weather? >> i'm a little surprised it's

everything. >> reporter: it's chilly out this morning. those temperatures are going to continue to drop this week. for more details on that, let's check in with ashton. good morning, ashton. good morning, jamie. last night the first of two cold fronts that will come through this week. second front tomorrow night into thursday. that will bring a reinforcing shot of cold air. 24-hour temperature change from where we were yesterday at this time, most of us anywhere from 10 to 20 degrees colder. it's 11 degrees colder than it in denver. 22 degrees colder up in aspen. almost 30 degrees colder over in grand junction. currently we're at 47 here in denver. i realize in a month or two we're going to laugh at calling 47 cold. but compared to the 81 yesterday, you'll definitely notice the chill in the air this morning. also enough wind out there to notice. high temperature today 66, or 15 degrees below yesterday. but sunny and dry. here's a check on the traffic.

new from overnight, pope francis has made a surprise visit to the site of that devastating august earthquake in central italy. he is visiting a school in the red zone. it killed at least 167 people. a former school bus driver will learn her punishment for a crash with children on board. elizabeth burris initially told investigators she prescription drugs for fibromyalgia. eight students were on the bus at the time. burris was behind the wheel when the bus rolled. five kids were hurt. prosecutors dropped the dui and child abuse charges as part of the plea agreement. people are now raising memorial funds for the five young people killed in a crash in arapahoe county. it happened sunday along the arapahoe county and elbert county line. investigators say the car was speeding.
