mike pence go head-to-head. weijia jiang at longwood university and farmville. really a great chance for voters to learn a lot more about these men. >> reporter: jim and karen, a recent poll shows that a large portion of americans actually don't know much about them so you are right. it's a chance to introduce them and convince people that if called upon they'll be ready to be commander in chief. but they'll also have to defend hillary clinton and donald trump so even though candidates have a very calm temperament, things could get heated in that back and forth. >> governor mike pence arrived at longwood university to scope out the stage for tonight's vice presidential debate. >> you'll see somebody who is able to defend donald trump, the running mate but at the same time take the case right to hillary clinton. >> reporter: pence will face off against senator tim kaine working with a home-field advantage.

spoken here many times and things like that. worked out great that tim kaine can head on down. >> reporter: ryan stover teaches political science at longwood and says tonight's debate likely won't impact the race for the white house. >> i'd like to say it matters and i think it does on one hand but on the other hand you saw what 80 million people tuned in last monday. i'm sure we are going to have half of that tonight. >> reporter: nearly a third of the 300 or so tickets to the debate went to longwood university students. they along with locals showdown puts their close knit community on the map. >> this is america's first chance to really see these two guys go at it. and to see that in person is a pretty awesome experience. >> reporter: dan crawley was born and raised in farmville. the rural virginia town is decked out in red, white, and blue. it's even serving up sugarcane sodas and pumpkin pence lattes. >> we are a pretty sleepy little town. to have you know the eyes of the world honors it is a pretty exciting thing. >> reporter: estimated 50

and the debate prep team has not revealed any specifics about what the candidates will talk about. but we assume it will be both domestic and rendering issues. and there is one thing in particular to look out for and that is a focus on religion because both of these men are deeply rooted in their faith. so we'll get a chance to see how that plays into some >> all right. thank you. big endorsement today in the denver district attorney race. governor hickenlooper through his support behind beth mccann. hickenlooper called one of the hardest working and most diligent legislators in the state house. saying she would make denver a national leader in criminal justice reform. >> and i have a lot of similar beliefs about criminal justice. and the need to look at the system with a wider perspective than just putting people in jail. looking at other options, for

mental health, substance abuse and particularly young people. >> mccann a democrat running against helen morgan an independent to replace current da mitch morrissey. the winner will be the first new district attorney in denver in 12 years. explosion in new jersey forced more than a dozen people out of their homes and now investigators are focusing on a possible gas leak. this is the news across america at 630. expulsion destroyed two homes this morning in patterson. people inside say they smelled gas and heard hissing sounds. they were all able to get out safely but several firefighters were hurt in the aftermath. the gas company says there were no previous reports of gas leaks in the area. crews did routine inspections of the service lines in those homes within the past two years. we know the train that slammed into the terminal in hoboken jeff -- was speeding and investigators say the train was going about 20 to 30 miles

the engineer told investigators he was only going 10 miles per hour. investigators found the data recorder, one person died. one other -- 100 others hurt. a man says his iphone 6 plus burned a hole in his back pocket as he was sitting in class. the phone was turned off. when he felt the heat, jumped up and saw the smoke and fire. what a scene. he did manage to put it out but not before getting some minor burns. >> i've always heard about samsung setting on fire and blown up people. i guess i got lucky. >> yeah. this fella said he had the phone for six months. there have been some reports of iphones catching fire while charging. apple says it is investigating. new details on a proposed roundup of wild horses in northwestern colorado. there are three weeks left in the appeal period before the roundup is due to begin. matt kroschel explains what will happen to those horses. >> people are very passionate about wild horses.

high. >> reporter: every four years the herd will double in size. without actions taken like these roundups and fertility drugs. >> we want to keep those horses healthy and keep the lands they live on healthy. >> reporter: officials estimate the sand wash heard near craig has more than 600 horses. >> ideally we would have the sand wash heard between 160 and the one last year. helicopter was used to funnel those horses into waiting trailers. this time around they'll set up pens. >> removing about 50 young horses that are more likely to be adopted. there is a going to go into one of our partners' programs called the great escape sanctuary out on the front range. the mayors that we catch, we are going to treat with a drug called pcp which delays fertilization. -- pzp.

quickchange area. so i am number 7. i'll come back here and my dresser will be waiting and i'll get some water and throw my clothes into a basket and put on a change of clothes. all of our clothes travel with us in these rolling costume areas. >> reporter: in this production, the actors are the orchestra. >> most musicals don't have the actors actually playing their instruments, but in this show we are the orchestra, which makes it very unique to this and all of the people in the show acting on stage if they're not on stage they are upstairs playing in the band. >> reporter: with all this, this is not your grandmother's cabaret. >> this one is more stripped- down, cd, body, it's more gritty, it has a lot more of the politics sort of overriding the whole show. it's darker, it's more edgy. >> oh, yeah.

the latest on hurricane matthew tore through haiti today, with 145 mile-per-hour winds and devastating rent. the hurricane uprooted trees and ripped roofs off of homes. rivers flooded leaving drivers stranded. the category four storm now has cuba in its sights more than 300,000 people evacuated. florida is under a state of emergency. tell you what, also planning mass evacuations. a million people in coastal carolina. >> bermuda high is pushing it more to the west every time we look at the projections. watching this one very carefully. let's take a look right now, we have a pretty nice evening in colorado. we did have clouds here and there. now they are beginning to clear and as they do it's going to make for a cold night. take a look at doppler 4000, just a few clouds, clear skies around here, on the hour by hour forecast, that's what we'll see. just a few clear skies, couples no showers.

that's when the temperatures are going to begin to drop. some moisture up in the mountains again, pretty good snow up there as we get on into thursday, cooler air moves in, so we could see showers look how close the snow is western jefferson county could see rain or snow and west of that it could be all snow. into friday, you can see things begin to clear out. that sets the stage for a pretty nice weekend. what we just talked about hurricane matthew winds 140, moving north at nine, bermuda high, got to get around that, carolinas, all the way up to long island. does not have to make landfall to be devastating. big tidal surge up there and also storms that it may spawn could produce tornadoes. we have to be aware of that. front that coolest down, showers and thunderstorms, behind cooler weather moving in and that is rain and snow and it is slowly sliding our way. today 65 and 63 after starts of 45 and 47. 70 and 41 norms for this time

lawsuit. >> i felt similar to the case with erin brockovich. here's this little me against a big powerful wells fargo bank. nobody's going to believe what i'm saying. >> a judge dismissed her claims accepting wells fargo version. she failed to meet the sales goals. the bank sent cbs news a statement reading, we do not tolerate retaliation against team members who report concerns. they went on to say they did a great findings. more than 100,000 medical patients are you certain insulin pumps might actually be targeted by hackers. that's true. johnson and johnson sent a warning to people using its animus one touch insulin pump, company says it has a bug which would allow hackers to hijack the device. and force it to deliver potentially deadly insulin doses. the company says the probability of that is extremely low. there have been no reports of hacking. happening now the

happening now preparations for the only vice presidential debate before the election. live pictures for you from virginia where the debate will start in just minutes. moderates are looking a bit lonely for now. political specialist shaun boyd here to explain what we should be watching for. >> while they don't typically change how voters decide, a lot of people will be watching tonight. and new cbs poll shows 7 in 10 americans will watch tonight's debate. i expect a lot less d also expect controversial subjects that didn't come up in that debate will come up tonight. indiana governor mike pence and virginia senator tim kaine are seasoned politicians who are generally low-key and mild- mannered but this debate really isn't about them. look for kaine to keep the debate about donald trump's controversies while pens will try to shift the focus back to hillary clinton's troubles. it won't be high drama like i said like the last debate but i think we will see the two

i first met mike on a fundraising event to help the hunger in ethiopia. i was an aurora scholar this year. at his birthday party. mike is a very nice guy. he's a really nice guy. he can do 62 pushups. mike is a great friend to the ethiopian community. mike's not like other politicians. he's not like other republicans. i think he's better. mike's one of us. he's one of us. mike coffman es uno de nosotros.
