on the man with the machete at the champion center near folsom field. kelly werthmann live on campus tonight. police just give us an update. >> reporter: we learned that that suspect was threatening a patient inside the champion center. this all escalated very quickly into the stairways of the building. that's where campus police as well as boulder police urged that man to drop his weapon. when he didn't, they shot him to death. >> i was kind of scared. >> reporter: just about 9:15 when police got the call. a man with a machete roaming the parking lot near folsom field. >> i'm shocked. actually it's very dangerous for the students out there. it's morning time and all students are off to their classes. >> reporter: campus police sent a text to students and staff warning them of the situation. >> i work in the library. we were like, that's so weird.

>> reporter: university as well as boulder police say they repeatedly asked the man to drop his weapon. when he didn't, an officer fatally shot the suspects. no one else was hurt. >> given the weapon that the suspect was armed with, given the statements already made to our initial victim, and given the nature of how he was maneuvering through the champion center, we believe that it was in the best in >> reporter: just a couple hours after police sent the all clear text, another harmer incident was reported at the umc building on the west side of campus. >> police were coming into the building with guns drawn. and shortly after that we got a tweet that said it seemed like it was a hoax. >> reporter: police in this afternoon briefing told us that incident at the umc was all due to a false report.

remain closed tonight. as for the officers involved in the shooting this morning, they have both been put on administrative leave which is part of protocol for both departments and the identities of the patient as well as that machete wielding suspect have yet to be released. live on the cu campus, kelly werthmann, cbs4 news. by the way we have posted this afternoon's entire news conference from police at cbsdenver.com. here is the latest in the wildfire burning in pueblo county. than previously thought. firefighters are shifting their efforts to setting up fire containment lines. the fire burned eight homes, hundreds of residents have been evacuated. some were allowed to return home this afternoon. this investigation continues into what sparked the flames. a lot of calls about the smoke from a fire near dia. this was the second day of a controlled burn at wildlife refuge. now to new details after

garage in colorado springs. police have issued an arrest warrant for the owners of the funeral company that picked up the body last month. craig brown and jay timothy brown face charges of abusing a corpse and criminal trespass. we just learned that jay timothy brown is now in custody. one woman spoke to the cbs affiliate in colorado springs. he said they stored the body in the garage because they had not received payment for cremation. >> being that we hadn't received payment and had a hard time due to the con the body, we had a hard time storing it. >> officers found the decomposing body inside of a body bag last week. after neighbors reported terrible smell coming from the garage. update now any story we've been reporting on for six years. in october of 2010 timothy elbow was seriously injured and left in a coma by a hit and run driver near coors field. his recovery has been remarkable. the accident was at 20th and

he's back now with a very welcome update. tom? >> reporter: it really is. back in october, tim elbow was washing across this intersection when he was struck by the hit-and-run driver. tim was not expected to survive. i've gotten to know tim and his incredible family. we're happy to report his recovery has been nothing short of a miracle. tim alba has come a long way. >> a good boy! >> reporter: the 32-yea canine rehab and conditioning group in broomfield. helping with everything from maintenance to swimming and conditioning. tim's job is the icing on the cake after a miraculous recovery from a life-changing accident six years ago. >> i got ran over. i came back bigger and stronger. >> reporter: in october of 2010, he was walking near coors field when a car struck him and took off. he was in a coma for 13 days.

mann dragon was sentenced to six months of work release. he served less than 100 days. now, tim tells me he's forgiven my dragon and this is wishing him the very best. live in denver tonight, tom mustin, cbs4 news. now new development of the case of two teenagers accused of plotting an attack on mountain vista high school in highlands ranch. brooke higgins at a court hearing today. the judge set a court date of october 19 higgins $1 million bond should be lowered. her attorneys are also expected to ask the judge to move the case back to juvenile court. police arrested higgins and sienna johnson last december for an alleged murder plot at their school. both were 16 at the time. and i now charged as adults. >> weather alert along the east coast, the look from space shows how huge hurricane matthew is. this storm is already slamming haiti and cuba. so big that florida's governor saying the state could be

lauren whitney joins us now. >> the national hurricane center has just issued a new track for this big storm. >> it has. we are looking at it right now over the bahamas bring a range of that area. hurricane force winds, down to category three but there's been a lot of lightning around the eye. because of that we can tell is going to intensify. so it could be a category four by the time it gets close to florida. start making its -- that din up along the coast into the carolinas by saturday. we're expecting a lot of rain along the coast, big time storm surge so there's a lot of preparations from the keys up through miami and up into charleston, south carolina. as we are expecting there to be a lot of rain in these areas. not sure if it will make landfall but it could skim the coast and make landfall. there's a little bit of variation. the models are still all over the place. we'll show you a couple of these. this is what we call the spaghetti plot. some of them have it skirting

and there are a couple outliers. again it will cause a lot of damage even if it doesn't make landfall. already airlines are canceling their flights to florida. don champion is live tonight in daytona beach with the evacuation preparations. >> reporter: good evening, lauren. officials up and down this part of the east coast have offered up dire warning after dire warning today as many tourists headed to beaches like this one behind me to soak up some sun for one final day. for the worst. >> people on the east coast are being warned hurricane matthew could be devastating. >> the screens around the porches. so we'll be prepared for it. >> reporter: florida's governor issued mandatory evacuations for barrier islands. >> if matthew directly impacts florida there will be massive destruction that we haven't seen in years. >> reporter: drivers waited in lines to fill up at gas stations while supplies flew off shelves.

this family is cutting their vacation short and heading back to canada. >> i think we should get out just in case it is a category four. but everyone's telling us yes, we should start heading home. >> reporter: matthew is being called the strongest storm to threaten this region in more than a decade. some places could also see 10 inches of rain. in south carolina, interstate 26 was packed with drivers racing to get out of the storm's path. this weekend it could hit as a category two or three storm. >> our goal is to make sure that no lives are lost. that people get moved out safely and that they get moved back safely. >> reporter: federal emergency officials repositioned supplies to respond to the disaster. and moving forward, one big concern remains long-duration power outages.

at 5:14 following breaking news. a stretch of i-70 east of denver shut down because of a deadly accident. this is out near watkins. the westbound lanes are now closed. a woman walking along the interstate was hit by a truck. we're trying to find out if she got out of her car or was just wondering along the roadside. if you're headed out, once again avoid westbound i 70 east of denver. a story of bravery involving a more -- a former u.s. marine learned to live with two new arms. sergeant john peck lost all four limbs in an explosion. he underwent a 14 hour long surgery to get two new arms in boston over the summer. it was successful but painful. >> there was one night in the

that's keeping them in good shape as you see. west here, we have all this change coming our way and chillier temperatures to boot. here is the hurricane, 120 mile- per-hour winds. it weakened over the tip of land will now northwest at 12 miles an hour. it will brush by the coast. some models have it turning around almost into the gulf. so we're watching this one very carefully. take a look talking hurricanes there, winter weather advisory for us t p.m. till noon on thursday, three to six inches could fall. hour by hour forecast, into motion, here is that's no. 3:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, now you see the snow in jefferson county maybe douglas county and some of that moisture just about to push into denver, maybe we get a couple scattered showers overnight. at 9:00 a.m. look at how heavy the rain is over northeastern colorado. now watch during the day, just scattered showers push across. not a washout as we said yesterday, just scattered showers is all we will see.
