now on cbs4 news at 6:00, one man carrying a machete is dead. after being shot by police on the cu campus in boulder. that was the start of a very chaotic day at the school. thanks for being with us. i'm jim benemann. >> the man was shot and killed at the new champion center on the northwest side of campus. later in the day there was another active shooter scare at the university mia jeff todd joins us live in boulder tonight. were these two things related? >> reporter: no, they were not. the first 911 call came in around nine deck 15, a patient was headed into the new champion center. they got sports medicine offices in their and that's when the verbal altercation with this man carrying a machete started, that men then followed this patient into the building.

machete. multiple officers from campus police and the boulder police department responded. one officer from each of those agencies fired at the man when he allegedly would not obey the command, to drop the weapon. >> at this time the suspect is not known to the police. we are still working on properly identifying him. >> reporter: this afternoon 911 was called again for a man with a gun in front of a starbuck that was the coffee shop on university hill or one inside the university memorial center which is on campus. so that building was put on another active shooter situation. and many people fled in the chaos. in the end, no threats were found. a boulder county joint investigation team is now looking into this officer involved shooting. we do not know the identity of the man who was allegedly carrying that weapon. we're going to have much more coming up on the cbs4 news at

phil distefano did not cancel school today. live in boulder, jeff todd, cbs4 news. >> thank you. the latest on that wildfire southwest of pueblo, the beulah hill fire is now 50% contained. some of the several hundred evacuees were allowed back on this afternoon. officials say a better look at the area puts the acreage burn now at 4800. a little smaller than previously thought. the fire broke ou a popular bagel shop will soon reopen. months after it shut down due to a fire. rosenberg's bagels in denver's five points neighborhood will be reopening on sunday october 16. closed back in may when a fire broke out in the apartment above the shop. firefighters found the body of the young man 29-year-old shane richardson inside. investigators believed the fire was set to cover up his murder. brian -- brian patterson was arrested for the crime.

might remember the town of lyons got a $36 million grant to repair damage from the flood three years ago. andrea flores is in lyons now tonight. the town's mayor says a federal investigation is now underway. >> reporter: that's right, karen. residents here in lyons say they feel like they've been left in the dark. there's a lot of unanswered questions tonight including which federal agency is conducting this and why. residents tell us town administrator victoria simonson and town clerk deb anthony have both been placed on temporary paid administrative leave. last night mayor connie sullivan confirmed federal authorities were granted access to official documents related to flood recovery funds. the town was granted $36 million after severe floods tore through the area three years ago. audit by the department of

comply with fema guidelines when contracting repairs and finished projects. without fema approval. unclear if the investigation is related to those findings while some residents are not surprised to learn about the investigations, others say they didn't see it coming. >> everything that's been done since the flood has been done quite well i think. by the town government and all the other agencies that were involved. it is surprising that they would be any implication of >> reporter: in less than an hour town officials will hold a meeting here at town hall you see behind me where they'll discuss plans for maintaining town operations during the investigation. they also plan to appoint an acting administrator for the town. they also say this meeting is open to the public. it begins at 7:00 at reporting live in lyons, andrea flores,

trevor siemian is going to be our quarterback this weekend. the qb banged up that shoulder against the buccaneers. mark haas joining us now. sounds like we might not know until kickoff. >> reporter: broncos in no rush to tell us or the falcons. trevor siemian used the phrase take it a day at a time like 10 times. gary kubiak said they will take the one day at a time approach all the way up under sunday's game. siemian was in uniform and wearing a helmet but watching practice today has paxton lynch and austin davis throwing. his mindset is that he will start on sunday and could be -- kubiak said it is trevor's job if healthy but even siemian didn't seem sure just how hurt he is saying he has not tested his shoulder yet. the broncos will continue to get paxton lynch ready just in case siemian can't start against the falcons. >> he didn't do anything today. obviously feeling a lot better than he was coming out of the game. a couple good days with greek

of the story. cbs4's jennifer brice joins us live in aurora. this has been an issue for quite some time now. >> reporter: that's right. the homeowner tells me for two months, take a look at this, they have been trying to get someone to fix the unfinished work here on their property. the box says a centurylink it but until today this homeowner says he couldn't get anyone to claim that this was their work to finish. >> we tried to go it because this is a big hole in the ground. and they said that nobody from centurylink came to this backyard to do that installment. program he and his family are frustrated. they say there's now a big mystery as to who should finish installing this utility box in their backyard. the stickers say centurylink but he says customer service reps have told them they didn't do the work. >> they said nobody that was employed by them came here and

tower. >> reporter: when technicians came here to access the box, they said they would finish the job the next day but never came back. it's now been at least two months and 20 phone calls later for this aurora family. they were exposed underground wires are a safety issue especially with children playing in the backyard. we called centurylink and they say they are looking into the situation. >> centurylink the company either can't keep their own employees or somehow is letting their equipment fall into nonemployees hands and they are doing something with it. >> reporter: now in a statement late today that we received around 530 the company says it has been denied access and can't fix that problem but they say they will complete that work very soon. live in aurora, jennifer brice, cbs4 news. a soldier thought his dog

happening now a soldier at fort carson desperately trying to get his dog back. it was given away while he was off training. steve munoz left his german shepherd with a munoz was out at fort irwin in california. he had limited communication while there. didn't know ace has escaped out of the dog sitter's yard. >> some woman saw him, he had a collar and brought him in. and reported it to the military police. >> a kennel in fountain has a contract with fort carson to take in found animals. the dog sitter tried to get ace back explaining the dogs owner was at training but since she didn't have ownership documents, and munoz couldn't

after five days per policy. fort carson is now trying to contact ace's new owner to see if they'll return the dog to munoz. a summit county canine will be better protected while on duty. he now has a protective vest thanks to a generous donation. mountain newsroom reporter matt kroschel explains why this vest is so important. >> reporter: the bond between handler and canine is strong. >> he does it all. we've been together since 2015. >> reporter: danny is viewed not just as a dog >> his job is to be on the front line for us -- >> reporter: but as a fellow officer. >> very valuable resource now not only to the sheriff's office but to the communities that surround summit county as well. >> reporter: danny is now wearing a new bullet and stabbed protective vest thanks to a donation from a nonprofit. >> the canines that protect us also to the same protection that we get. >> reporter: canine danny's best is embroidered with a

and then brush by the coast. it will be here saturday, some models have a turning back around, some have it going up the coast. so we are watching this one as it doesn't know what it wants to do. here is the front that went through last week and give us chillier temperatures. we have a big surge of cold air that's going to change our weather once again. let's go to meteorologist lauren whitney in the colorado weather center. the change coming our way. >> like you just said we do have that front that moved that was our first surge of cold air. our second one is coming in later on tonight. and then it will head towards eastern plains tomorrow late morning early afternoon. with that we get another cooldown about 10 to 15 degrees cooler than today. we were a little cool today so it feels nice -- will get the secondary surge of cool air. some of our mountain areas could pick up snow as well. we may get rain here in the denver area. maybe a mix in some spots and

but the snow level could drop down to about 7500 feet. if you have travel plans, we had some snarls earlier from snow moving through. tells about the advisory we have out there. >> take a look at this. winter weather advisory 9:00 p.m. till noon on thursday. again for portions of the northern and central mountains mainly about 8000 feet. three to six inches of snow could fall out there. look to the west and you'll see a lot more white on the mountains tomorrow. take a look at the hour by hour, you can see that snow up at the higher elevations and yb about 4:00 a.m., especially over jefferson county. otherwise it could be rain. some scattered showers, 8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, might see some showers and very close off to the west. some snow and scattered showers push through as the day goes on. watch how quickly the skies clear. very driver friday, right on into saturday morning, start of a terrific weekend. we are going to warm it up in the five-day forecast.

here. a clear statement he is still the number 1 guy. trevor siemian did a lot of standing and not much else at practice. paxton lynch took the reps with the ones and after their workout the broncos did their best to downplay trevor's injury. >> i feel better than yesterday. haven't tried to do too much. so hopefully i can continue to get better. >> it's what we do today, the other guy needed all the reps. trevor didn't need those reps. we'll get him another day of rest and see how much we can get done tomorrow. i think it was pretty much the plan. >> reporter: we won't know until later in the week whether or not trevor is healthy enough to play. but whether it is siemian or paxton lynch, the rest of the broncos offense does not seem to care. >> it's about chemistry. that's what it's about. we got a great defense. we got offensive players and so whoever they go with, we still

please vote at cbsdenver.com. aqib talib refused to answer questions today about reports dallas police have concluded he shot himself back in june but they won't press charges. gary kubiak said he has not heard anything new from the nfl. as far as he's concerned nothing has changed. look is back at patriots practice. tom brady set to return after sitting out the four game suspension. don't expect the media as the patriots don't have to add him to the active roster until saturday. so he's not obligated to speak with reporters. i'm sure that bill belichick had plenty to say about having tom back. >> right now our focus is on cleveland. trying to get ready to go to cleveland. we can't do anything about whatever it was or wasn't the last four weeks. we're into the cleveland week and that's all our focus is. not worried about last week. not worried about next week. not worried about last year. worried about this week against cleveland. that's it.

at least a half million people along the east coast are being sold to evacuate right eastbound lanes of one interstate in charleston. so the only traffic is westbound. away from the coast. right now want to give you a look at that hurricane from space. massive at least 16 deaths in the caribbean, already blamed on this huge storm. meteorologist lauren whitney is tracking the hurricane from colorado's weather center. where is it right now?

bahamas as it moves to parts of cuba it lost steam and bounced down to category three. as it moves through warmer waters is dissipated to ramp up a bit and go back to category four. we're watching the track of this and it could get very, very close to the coast even if it doesn't make landfall the eastern side of florida could see some pretty devastating rain, severe storms and also the wind could be nasty because the wind extends 160 miles from the eye so even if it doesn't make landfall the winds and storm surge could still quote -- cause quite a bit of damage. impact into florida to night through friday morning making its way up to parts of south carolina by saturday. south carolina is prepping as well but the whole area is really going to see even if it doesn't make landfall quite a bit of activity so the path is still a little bit uncertain as it is making its way through the bahamas. along the east coast and up towards the carolinas. again flooding is going to be a huge concern and also a lot of damage to the coast. airlines are already canceling flights to florida. cbs4's don champion is live now
