bahamas as it moves to parts of cuba it lost steam and bounced down to category three. as it moves through warmer waters is dissipated to ramp up a bit and go back to category four. we're watching the track of this and it could get very, very close to the coast even if it doesn't make landfall the eastern side of florida could see some pretty devastating rain, severe storms and also the wind could be nasty because the wind extends 160 miles from the eye so even if it doesn't make landfall the winds and storm surge could still quote -- cause quite a bit of damage. impact into florida to night through friday morning making its way up to parts of south carolina by saturday. south carolina is prepping as well but the whole area is really going to see even if it doesn't make landfall quite a bit of activity so the path is still a little bit uncertain as it is making its way through the bahamas. along the east coast and up towards the carolinas. again flooding is going to be a huge concern and also a lot of damage to the coast. airlines are already canceling flights to florida. cbs4's don champion is live now

preparing for the worst. what's it like? >> reporter: yeah. good evening. actually just within the past few minutes we learned from florida officials that more than 1.5 million people alone in this state have been told to leave their homes. ahead of matthew for the most part. it appears that most people are heeding those dire warnings. and not taking any chances. people along the east coast are >> the screens around the porch as, hurricane screens. we'll be prepared. >> reporter: florida's governor issued mandatory evacuations for the barrier islands. >> if matthew directly impacts florida there will be massive destruction we haven't seen in years. >> reporter: drivers waited in lines to fill up at gas stations while supplies flew off the shelves. tourists are also preparing. this family is cutting their vacation short and heading back to canada. >> i think we should get out

four, but everyone's telling us yes, we should start heading home. >> reporter: matthew is being called the strongest storm to threaten this region in more than a decade. some places could also see 10 inches of rain. >> reporter: interstate 26 was packed with drivers racing to get out of the storm's path. this weekend it could hit as a category two or three storm. >> our goal is to make sure that get moved out. safely and that they get moved back safely. >> reporter: federal emergency officials repositioned supplies to respond to the disaster. now, one of the big issues moving forward will be power outages. estimates say that about 7 million people from florida up into the carolinas could lose service over the course of the next few days and even worse it could take several days to restore that service. we are in daytona beach, don champion, cbs4 news.
