first major hurricane to hit the area in more than a decade. i'm marlie hall in daytona beach with the latest coming up. >> reporter: flights are impacted across the united states, including here at dia. we have the latest as hurricane matthew approaches the united states. that's coming up on cbs4 morning news. hurricane matthew is a boat load of trouble on stormy seas. let's >> wicked weather out east and here at home we're facing a cold front. let's get over to ashton who is tracking it all. good morning. >> good morning. we have rain and snow across colorado this morning. the snow of course limited to just mountain areas. we're not going to see snow in denver today, but we will see light rain. meanwhile temperatures are in the 40s. a lot of weather to talk about. we'll do so coming up. now let's get a first check on

silverthorne. this is our cdot camera in that area. you get farther out to the east of the eisenhower and johnson mountain tunnels, and look at the conditions that we have. passenger traction restrictions and chain restrictions. safe travels, everyone. 16 people are now dead after hurricane matthew wreaked havoc in the carribean. this morning matthew pounced on the bahamas. warnav prepare for heavy rain and high damaging winds. our marlie hall has the latest from daytona beach, florida. >> reporter: as hurricane matthew roared through the bahamas, parts of florida became a ghost town. >> don't become a victim. make sure you get out and get out tonight. >> reporter: people along the east coast began heeding evacuation warnings. >> gas stations haven't had gas. >> reporter: as others cleared

their properties, this boater in daytona beach decided to move further inland. >> this one i think will be more dramatic. >> reporter: lurk matthew -- hurricane matthew is expected to regain strength over the next few hours. >> we'll start feeling tropical storm force winds and could potentially feel hurricane force winds, too. >> reporter: matthew is expected to bring storm surge and beach erosion to and south carolina tomorrow, before moving out to sea this weekend. marlie hall, cbs news, daytona beach, florida. that hurricane means flights to the southeast coast are starting to shut down. let's take you out to dia. our jamie leary is there. jamie. >> reporter: good morning, alan. more than 1600 flights have been canceled across the united states because of matthew. now nights to -- flights to and from denver canceled.

united said initially nothing in denver was impacted, but we are starting to see some cancellations. starting around 1:20 p.m. this afternoon the orlando flight has been canceled. they have an 8:25 flight scheduled to depart this morning for orlando. surprisingly enough, the flight is booked full with three- quarters of those on board checked in. people are going to florida, may not be the best idea. but we are starting cancellations especially with southwest and frontier. fort lauderdale will close at 10:30 eastern time, so 8:30 our time. we'll keep an eye on the situation here. live from dia, jamie leary, cbs4 morning news. latest information from the national hurricane center does not give us good news about matthew. >> we have ashton to talk more about that and colorado's weather. >> we have snow falling in the mountains. some rain along the front range.

it's as you move into the foothills. it's all transitions. genesee now it's rain. idaho springs, it's snow falling along i-70. similar situation along the 285 corridor coming out of the 470 corridor. it's all rain. up to conifer, bailey it's where it transitions into some snow. meanwhile, temperatures this morning they're chilly. not quite as cold as yesterday morning. most of us are in the 40s. temperatures won't change very much today climb maybe 5 to 10 degrees between now and this afternoon. at noon, 51. a high today of 53. most of the precipitation will be in the morning. tonight skies clear and we anticipate our first official freeze tonight. freeze warnings posted for tomorrow morning. here's joel. eastbound i-70 closed due to the adverse weather conditions we have up that direction. here's the cdot camera we've been watching as police are

conditions are passable. they're probably going to try to get cdot out to sand these roads. this is the eisenhower and johnson tunnels and you can see the terrible conditions we have up that direction. a lot of the trucks pulled off to the side. chain and passenger traction restrictions in place both directions along i-70 to the eisenhower and johnson tunnels over vail pass. u.s. 6 over loveland pass both directions this morning. you can see the transition ashton was talking about. mix around o up, we've got snow as they get out to georgetown. ongoing construction along c- 470 near morrison. that's causing some slowing. we've got that moisture on the roadways as well this morning in town that could slow down your drive. >> i saw flurries this morning in the foothills coming in. people are mourning the loss of a father and husband

the gunman is still on the run. we have learned he died from the shooting late last month, somebody shot him at a home just east of havana. police are hoping somebody has information about the shooter. an update on a wild fire south of pueblo. fire crews are trying to determine its cause. this as some people are finally able to return home. firefighters have some success this morning as they start to get a handle on the beulah fire. it's now 50% contained. it's around 4800 acres. smaller than they first thought. it's still threatening lots of homes, though. the fire started monday and has destroyed eight homes total. the cause is still under investigation. this is the news now on flood recovery work in lyons. two high ranking government workers are on paid leave and a federal investigation is underway involving grant money for flood relief. a public assistance grant of $36 million was awarded to the

to the flooding of 2013. an audit by the department of homeland security back in april revealed lyons' officials did not comply with some fema guidelines and finish projects without approval. it's unclear now if the investigation is related to those findings. >> i would like an answer, but the town didn't give us an answer. >> it's understandable people would be upset by this. all i can say is cooperating and we are eager to see the outcome. >> sullivan said the town hasn't been given a time line on projects. denver's homeless situation is causing some oems now -- homeowners to consider moving out of the city. some neighborhoods are seeing more homeless taking up room in the park, alley ways leaving

homeless use their outside furniture for pillows. after finding needles and finding a homeless couple getting intimate in public, one couple are wanting to move, feeling unsafe. >> it's the number one reason i want to sell my house. >> reporter: because of the homeless? because of the homeless situation. >> it makes it unsafe for the rest of us. >> rising housing downtown sweeps advocates for the homeless say is part of the reason for the influx of homeless into metro neighborhoods. how target is catering to big cities and the safety measures coming soon for some rail passengers. >> reporter: what do cycling and suds have to do with a healthy screening for men? i'll explain coming up.

can beer help in healing? some are hoping so. today in denver while men enjoy craft beer at some are hoping they will also get screened for prostate cancer. here is kathy walsh. >> reporter: the big beer liner is parked at 14th and stout in downtown denver. setup is underway to spread the passion for texas craft beer. the beer folks are hoping to tap into a reluctant population. >> men are reluctant when it comes to their health. they don't talk about it,

they usually will almost hide from it. >> reporter: so davis tucker started the journey from austin to denver. the bikes and beer brigade stops along the way to educate men about prostrate cancer. >> we have some survivors who talk, and that's wonderful because you get a firsthand knowledge from guys who have been through it. >> reporter: the brew crew hits the mile high city in time for the great american beer festival. for 10:00 they'll pour blood draw to find out their psa. >> psa is controversial? >> it is controversial. there's been information it's not always accurate and that's true. but it's an indicator. if that number starts to go up you need to be paying attention to it. >> reporter: the lab results come in the mail in two weeks. men will be encouraged to take them to their primary care physician. tucker wants to reach 1400 men.

get them thinking about their health. >> kathy walsh reporting. the free blood test will be available at 14th and stout from 12:00 to 5:00 and saturday from 10:00 to 2:00. some broncos players are turning their footballs in for hammers. this is the third year they've sponsored habitat for humanity. this is part of their be a champion in the community campaign. these are pics from last year's work. the guys had the hard hats . community leaders to help build four homes in the college view community. it helps low income families. 5:14. we do weather and traffic every 10 minutes and it's thursday, ashton. how are things looking? >> looking wet in many areas, which is overall terrific news, because we really need the moisture considering how dry it's been here recently. the snow will create a problem on the roadways.

telluride, lake city, we have snow around ouray as well. from conifer to bailey, that's all snow. you can see where the transition is. ken carol it's rain, and it transitions over to snow. denver we have light snow falling around the area, highlands ranch, castle rock, east side of town, aurora have snow. loveland, berthoud light rain there, making its way into weld county. eaten starting to see a couple of raindrops. i wanted to show you this, i-25 north of wellington as hard as cheyenne, which -- towards cheyenne, wyoming, intense rain falling along 25 and heavy snow south of cheyenne. temperatures are in the 40s for most lower elevations. 20s and 30s throughout the colorado high country.

will top out in the 40s for many mountain areas and we'll be in the 50s along the front range. will be a chilly day. temperatures stay warm enough where it will be all rain denver and the front range. the snow will stay in the mountains. heavier snow will be this morning. at noon, a lot of the precipitation starts winding down, and as we transition into this evening, there will still be a few pockets of precipitation around. overall this morning will be wetting compared to this afternoon. another ni expected tomorrow morning. tomorrow afternoon 64. and sunny with 70s for the weekend. eastbound i-70 is closed at silverthorne. this is a look at frisco i-70. flashing lights are out, telling folks you can't pass through here, due to multiple accidents closer to the eisenhower and johnson tunnels. this is the situation up that direction.

the side. chain and passenger traction restrictions in place. 285, it's tough through conifer. bailey to fair play, even buena vista it's a tough drive along 285 this morning. i-70, this is what ashton was talking about, you can see the transition not only along highway 119, but along i-70 as well. you go from the pink, the icy portion, into snow and snowpacked roads along that direction. be prepared for winter driving conditions. co are not. the story in town is the wet roads that we have, especially as you get to the west of i-25. not affecting speeds, but you can see a little bit of wet out there this morning. it's one of those things where we haven't had rain in a while, so oil from the tires, tire pieces, makes it slick. two months, 20 phone calls and nobody seems to be claiming to have dug up a utility box

mess. an aurora homeowner says the box is marked with century link signs. we hear from the company. >> we tried to go and call them and have someone fix it and repair it, because it's a big hole in the ground and they said nobody from century link came here. >> reporter: this family is frustrated, saying there's a mystery of o installing this utility box. the stickers say century link on it, but he says customer service reps have told them they didn't do the work. >> they said that nobody that was employed by them came here and did the installment. >> reporter: he says when technicians came to access the box, they said they would finish the job the next day, but never came back. it's now been at least two months and 20 phone calls later

they worry that exposed underground wires are a safety issue, especially with children playing in the back yard. we called century link and they say they're looking into the situation. >> if century link, the company, either a, can't keep track of their own employees, or b, somehow is letting their equipment fall into nonemployees' hands and they're doing something with it. >> century link says it's been denied access to the box. but in says it will now fix the problem. ,, in colorado, we stand together, but congressman coffman stands with donald trump and will support trump for president. they've spread falsehoods about president obama. trump: oh, no.

stocks are off a little bit ahead of this morning's open. after last week's train accident in new jersey, word of technology that just might be able to reduce accidents. >> new safety technology that could prevent speeding trains from crashing is coming to some minnesota rail lines. positive train control could stop a collision or derailment because of excessive speed. federal safety regulators are lookin an automated braking system contributed to last week's deadly rail crash in new jersey. stocks gained on wednesday. the dow finished up 112 points. the nasdaq gained 26. some of the same workers calling for higher wages for mcdonald's employees have filed claims of sexual harassment against the fast food giant. those 15 workers are part of the fight for $15 campaign, who have been pushing for higher

the allegations. target is breaking out of its box store mode. they opened their first small store in new york city wednesday. it's just one-third the size of its regular stores. it's part of a larger plan to open dozens of smaller locations around the country in urban markets and college towns. that's your moneywatch report. for more, go to cbsmoneywatch.com. in new york, i'm kenneth craig. we do weather and traffic every 10 minutes on the 4's and it's time to get over to ashton. >> good morning to yo snow obviously here in colorado today. that precipitation will extend to the east of us through nebraska into iowa, parts of kansas as well, if your travels take you in that direction. in the southeast nice, until you get to florida, where category 3 hurricane matthew will start to impact the state today. the biggest impacts in florida will come tomorrow. in terms of airports, biggest issue now is chicago, delays up

helpful this morning. in the hill in georgetown, 32 degrees right now. robert smith there is reporting some snow. in fact, here's a picture he just snapped showing the thermometer at 32 and snow on the fence post this morning. always appreciate our weather watchers sending in their photos. here's joel. good morning. if we could keep the snow on the fence posts, right? but it's got to go 0 the roads as well, and that's what we're seeing near frisco. i-70 closed in the eastbound direction due to the hill to the eisenhower and johnson tunnels. you can see how tough the conditions are. passenger pass restrictions in place, as well as chain restrictions and that goes for u.s. 6 as well. the denver metro area, drive to dia will be a wet one in some spots. along pena boulevard, that's where the drive starts to clear up a bit. joel, thank you very much. >> 47 degrees here in denver. a viral moment on the campaign.

east coast. this is the news, the day, thursday october 6th. i'm alan gionet. >> i'm britt moreno. already to thursday, we're thinking about the weekend. let's get over to ashton who is tracking the cooldown and the weekend forecast. the weekend looks terrific. 70s with sunshine. for now we have rain and snow to deal with. it's overall a good thing, because we definitely need the moisture. it's 43 degrees in westminster. 46 highlands ranch. temperatures in the metro area no snow down here. the snow will be limited to the higher foothills and mountains. we'll deal with the light rain. let's get a check on the traffic with joel. good morning. this is a look i-70 as you get to frisco. look at that snow coming down. we've had so many accidents in the eastbound direction that they've had to close i-70
