east coast. this is the news, the day, thursday october 6th. i'm alan gionet. >> i'm britt moreno. already to thursday, we're thinking about the weekend. let's get over to ashton who is tracking the cooldown and the weekend forecast. the weekend looks terrific. 70s with sunshine. for now we have rain and snow to deal with. it's overall a good thing, because we definitely need the moisture. it's 43 degrees in westminster. 46 highlands ranch. temperatures in the metro area no snow down here. the snow will be limited to the higher foothills and mountains. we'll deal with the light rain. let's get a check on the traffic with joel. good morning. this is a look i-70 as you get to frisco. look at that snow coming down. we've had so many accidents in the eastbound direction that they've had to close i-70

>> thank you. i love seeing the snow. take a look at this wheat ridge home surveillance video shows a woman banging on a stranger's door as she seeks help. you see her boyfriend grabbing her and dragging her away. watch this. the homeowner runs out to try to save the woman. it happened in the 4300 block of newland street in wheat ridge. now let's go to shawn chitness who is live at the wheat ridge shawn, i understand the man, accused shooter, is still on the run. >> reporter: yeah, britt, it's incredible that this scary situation was caught on camera and it is incredible video. as you mentioned, that person, the suspect they are looking for, still on the loose, even though the victims in this case are okay. police are looking for 32-year- old jesus garcia, the man accused of shooting his girlfriend and the good samaritan in this case trying

be considered armed and dangerous. let's take a look at this video that shows you what was happening outside of brian geer's front door. you see the woman trying to ask for help and her boyfriend trying grab her. this was around 3:30 in the morning sunday. geer woke up to the sound of that door bell and went to try to help. garcia shot his girlfriend and tries to take her away, dragging her from the door. geer comes out and tries after him. he wanted to try and knock out the gun from the suspect's handled. he wasn't able to do that, but did help the woman break free and he himself got shot in the leg. >> looking back, it really does scare me. i don't want to leave my kid without a dad, my wife without a husband. >> reporter: so it certainly could have turned out worse. but he says he's glad he was the one that was able to help. if you want to help him, there

that information online now at cbsdenver.com. shawn chitness, cbs4 morning news. thank you very much. hurricane matthew is powering up again as it picks a target along the coast of florida. this is the last forecast track from the national hurricane center out in the wee hours this morning. it is now a category 3 storm. people are evacuating, but not enough. here's marlie hall. >> reporter: as hurricane matthew roared thro became a ghost town. don't become a victim. make sure you get out and get out tonight. >> reporter: people along the east coast began heeding evacuation warnings yesterday, flocking to gas stations to fill up. >> i've driven around looking for gas and the gas stations haven't had any gas. >> reporter: as others cleared store shelves and boarded up their properties, this boater in daytona beach decided to move further inland. >> we've ridden out a lot of storms in the past but this one

f0 >> reporter: hurricane matthew is expected to regain strength over the next few hours. ficials say people along the florida coast should begin feeling its effects by tonight. >> we'll start feeling storm force winds and could potentially feel hurricane force winds, too, for an extended period of time. >> reporter: the storm has already left behind a path of destruction in haiti and cuba, flattening homes, flooding streets and knocking out power. the coast guard is warning people to stay out of the water. >> definitely not a good time to go out curious. f0 >> reporter: matthew is expected to bring dangerous orm surge and beach erosion to georgia and south carolina tomorrow before moving out to sea this weekend. marlie hall, cbs news. f0 >> hurricane matthew already a killer is being blamed for at least 25 deaths in the

>> snow in the high country, rain at lower elevations. you can seal the snow now falling over park county through clear creek county. along i-70. as joel has been talking about this morning, once you get above about genesee is where it starts to transition. idaho springs, it's all snow. lower elevations we're dealing with light rain, except for up north. north of wellington is where we have very heavy rain. this band of heavy precipitation has developed. it's just moved to the east of cheyenne now and heavy rain on our side of the state line. temperatures are in the 40s here in the denver metro area. and temperatures will not climb very much at all today. 9:00a.m., 45. lunchtime, 51. a high today of 53. overall it will be our coolest day since may and tonight skies clear. a freeze expected. our first official freeze expected tomorrow morning. freeze warning already in effect. let's check in with joel.

several accidents. it's closed out that direction. we are seeing snowy, icy conditions, chain restrictions are in place. cdot camera frisco. look at that snow coming down, see it underneath the lamp light. trucks have pulled off to the side of the road. we have seen snow plows moving through there. this is our other cdot camera, i-70 at the vail rest area. the flakes flying. winter driving conditions along fair play to buena vista. we've been watching this ice/snow line and you can see it slow down on the approach to idaho springs, and we have quite a bit of slowing out to demont. along i-70 east of that, much better conditions. you can still see ice coming up the hill. new accident eastbound direction of 6th and wadsworth. all that rain ashton is tracking, it will make for a wet drive in town.

airlines to cancel flights across the nation to that area in the southeast. we have dozens of nights cans -- flights canceled in denver. cbs4's jamie leary is live at dia for us. what are you seeing out there? >> reporter: 1600 flights across the nation, close to that number, have been canceled because of matthew. we're looking now, we talked to an official at southwest airlines a moment ago and he said here's the situation, early morning flights are still doing okay now. but he said if you're going to orlando after 4:00 p.m., you are on a canceled flight. 4:00p.m. to orlando has been canceled. heading to west palm beach afternoon, your flight has been canceled. we have cancellations for arrivals as well. we have a frontier airlines flight supposed to come in at 9:13 from miami, that's canceled. another one from atlanta

i want to show you the bigger picture. take a look at the misery map, that will show you the impact thus far. this is updated every four minutes. now they have about31 cancellations. those cancellations are on the rise now. a majority of them stemming from the miami airport. and actually, fort lauderdale, that's grounding flights starting at 10:30. lots of cancellations because of matthew, and you're going to continue to see the we're going to an eye on those and let you know as those things happen in real time. live at dia, jamie leary, cbs4 news. thank you. the champion center will be open today on the cu boulder campus, after the police chief says two officers shot and killed a man apparently wielding a machete yesterday. it happened at the new champion center. investigators say the man

the sports medicine offices inside. police shot him when he refused to drop that machete. no one else was hurt. students of course were caught by surprise after receiving campus wide safety alerts. >> i'm shocked. i'm actually -- and it's very dangerous for the students and it's morning time and all students are off to their classes. >> it's unknown whether the suspect was a student, had a health issues. police tracked the red car here and chased it eastbound on 14th avenue. officers say it crashed into this blue car as it was heading north on downing. the driver of the red car then took off. police say they caught up with that driver nearby. nobody injured in that one. a vehicle took a tumble from the upper parking lot at red rocks last night. its driver went over the cliff,

arafat other journalist -- our photojournalists attending the concert. police say they are not investigating alcohol as a factor in that one. update now on a controversy in lyons we've been investigating. cbs4 has learned the fbi is looking into how town leaders spent flood recovery money. >> reporter: fbi and federal housing agents have seized documents and searched lyons' computers in a probe town ad it precured flood recovery work. but at a special meeting called to address the investigation, that's about all mayor sullivan would say. >> why are we doing this and i would like an answer, but the town didn't give us an answer. >> reporter: on the advice of counsel she said the town has put two employees on leave. >> it's understandable people would be upset about this.

cooperating and eager to see the outcome. >> reporter: after severe flooding three years ago, the city received $36 million in recovery funding. an audit by the homeland security in april revealed city officials didn't comply with some fema guidelines and finished projects without their approval. but it's unclear if this investigation is related to those findings. >> i guess that raises a little bit of a flag, when you get the feds involved in something going on in this tiny town. >> i want them, because, you know, it was a struggle for everybody, including them. >> sullivan says the town has not been given a time line and she is not sure how the investigation will impact ongoing work. if you've been one of the skeptics maybe saying fall isn't here, it feels like it today. 47 degrees in denver. it will get a little bit

eastern plains. in the high country, we have snow, including in the san juan mountains. the snow is flying in ouray. up around south park we have light to even moderate snow falling and along 285, bailey, conifer boeing seeing snow. going up i-70 above about nor son that's where it starts transitioning. by the time you get to idaho springs it is all snow. mainly light rain in the denver area. the yellow from lakewood towards wheat ridge, that's falling. light rain in northern colorado as well. fort collins, loveland, greeley, windsor seeing at least light rain. one pocket of heavy rain near carr, colorado. heavy snow north of that, south of cheyenne. 47 here in denver. 26 degrees currently in leadville. today is going to be a cool day. we're not going to warm up very much from now. highs will be in the 50s this

precipitation. using our cbs4 futurecast. 7:00a.m., rain and snow. we'll pause at noon today, a lot of the precipitation will be starting to taper off by that point and transitioning out onto the eastern plains. the snow around sterling later today, if you're watching from far northeast colorado later on today you could see snow. but for denver and front range it will stay all rain. 7:00this evening, most of the precipitation will be over with. today 53, mostly with precipitation. tomorrow 64, with sunshine. for the weekend, 70s and the nice weather will continue into columbus day monday. here's joel. take a look at the drive into the high country. this is a good sign, right, cars moving eastbound along i- 70. closure looks like has been moved out of the way. icy and snowpacked conditions approaching the eisenhower and johnson mountain tunnels similar situation. do you see the flashing lights

risk. researchers from oxford university followed a total of 800,000 women in three large studies and found no increased risk. scientists from harvard and massachusetts general hospital say they've come up with a blood sugar test that is 50% more accurate than the current test widely used by diabetics. researchers say the new test is more precise because it factors in the age of red blood cells and say it could lead to more precise diagnosis, monitoring and tailored treatments. new research concludes there is a cap to how old we can possibly live. apparently, we've already reached it. researchers calculated the maximum human life span peaked in the mid-'90s. the average maximum at 115 years, and the absolute limit at 125. it's loud, running late and

welcome back. 36 degrees in western boulder county at coal creek canyon. snow on the flowers there in boulder county. we have the radar showing that snow there around cold creek canyon towards evergreen, conifer, the highway 285 corridor seeing snow. once you get below about 7500 feet that's where we've got rain. for the most part it's light developed, wheat ridge up towards thornton. also watching heavier rain up to the north. more on your weather straight ahead. let's check traffic. couple of traffic alerts we're following. not only up into the high country, where we have chain and passenger traction restrictions because of the snow, but an accident southbound i-25 as you get to 84th. the center lane is blocked off there. we have an accident in the eastbound direction of u.s. 6 at wadsworth being zoomed in

joel, thank you. colorado's wealthiest resident is still charlie irgin. he tops the list of five colorado billionaires to appear with a net worth of $14 billion. that's good for the 28th overall, phillip anschutz ranked 7th. the biggest mall in the nation will close most of its operations on thanksgiving. mall of america in minnesota says it wants its workers to spends time with their families. the mall's 520 stores will have the option to stay open. security and other key personnel will be on duty, but the mall itself will reopen at 5:00 in the morning on black friday for all the early risers. 47 degrees in denver.
