this is the news at 6:00 a.m. hurricane matthew puts on muscle overnight as it winds up to punch florida, georgia and the carolinas. here's the latest view from space of that storm and a well defined eye. when matthew is expected to hit florida ahead. an eye on changing weather in our state. snow is falling this morning in the high country and we have showers hitting parts of the metro area. for all of you who maybe thought, i don't need the jacket yet, well, today could be your day. it's 47 degrees in denver and we'll get a little bit cooler. thanks for joining us. i'm britt moreno. >> i'm alan gionet. let's get right to ashton who told us this was coming and here it is. >> that's right. here it is. not only the jacket, britt, but you may want to think about the

rainfall deficit of over 2 inches in denver, so this is great news that we're finally seeing precipitation, though it will cause issues for the morning commute. snow levels around 7500 feet. once you get into the higher foothills and mountains it's all snow. of course rain down here. it will stay rain today in denver, boulder and fort collins. much more on your weather straight ahead. let's get a check on the traffic with joel. traffic alert we're following. southbound coming down into town, you have the center and this accident at 84th causing a mess behind it. speeds dipping down into the 20s. 13 minutes from 120th to i-70. joel, thank you. hatching now, hurricane -- happening now, hurricane matthew is gaining strength. here's a look at the storm's path. matthew pounded the bahamas overnight and early this morning. it is supposed to become a category 4 storm as it

coast tonight. matthew is expected to bring a dangerous storm surge and cause beach erosion to georgia and south carolina tomorrow before it moves out to sea over the weekend. the storm has already killed at least 25 people in the carribean. thousands along the east coast have already listened to evacuation warnings. drivers have been filling up at gas station. they have cleared out store shelves and boarded up their properties. boaters in daytona beach are moving further inland. >> we've ridden out a one i think will be much more dramatic. >> the storm has already left a path of destruction behind in haiti and cuba, flattening homes, flooding streets and knocking out power. people are calling hurricane matthew the largest humanitarian event in haiti since the 2010 earthquake. humanitarian aid is starting to pour into the country. u.s. helicopters are now delivering supplies. more than 300,000 people are in

flights to and from denver now because of hurricane matthew. dozens of them. let's go to our jamie leary live now with the story, she's at dia this morning. >> reporter: good morning, alan. we've started to notice a trend. some of the early morning flights are a go. we have seen some cancellations on the arrive side. there's an early morning flight from miami and atlanta, both canceled. early morning flights are a go there's an 8:25 a.m. flight checked in basically full, scheduled to depart on time. but the trend is early morning flights a go. afternoon flights for instance not so much. i talked to a supervisor here at the southwest counter. he said if you're scheduled to arrive in orlando after 4:00 p.m. your flight is canceled. expected to arrive in west palm beach this afternoon, also canceled. this is showing in real time, it updates about every four

happening across the country. 1600 flights total have been canceled. this map showing 35 cancellations at last check that was 31. so that lift is growing, updating every four minutes, with a majority of them out of miami. more cancellations expected this afternoon. live at dia, jamie leary, cbs4 news. let's move over to ashton and figure is on track to hit. >> we've got the storm down off the coast of florida. it's going to start to impact florida today and is going to have more of an impact on florida tomorrow. likely will become a category 4, will restrengthen tomorrow. snow in the mountains and rain, heavy rain that's developed for some of the western suburbs,

the rain is just coming down. snow level is just above morrison and genesee and conifer this morning. or actually it's a little below conifer. conifer and bailey it's already transitioned into snow. some rain up to the north around fort collins and greeley as well. your bus stop forecast, 42, cloudy skies with rain showers in the forecast. most of the rain that happens today will be this morning. let's get a check on the traffic. center lanes blocked off southbound along i-25, going to 84th due to you can see the flashing lights and cars trying to get on either side to get by. that will cause delays. speeds in the 20s behind that. 14 minutes from 120th to i-70. westbound along i-76 loading up eastbound along the i-270 as well. earlier accident moved off to the side in the eastbound direction of 6th and wadsworth. new accident northbound direction of santa fe as you get to iowa. road/weather index showing the

ashton is tracking. that will affect portions of wadsworth north of i-76. could have areas of standing water. it's coming in the form of snow into the high country. we have seen the reopening of i- 70 in the eastbound direction at silverthorne. pain and pass -- chain and passenger restrictions in place. if you are about to get in your car, you can turn on koa traffic and cbs4 weather together. joel, thank you. 8th and sheridan is back open after a nasty two-car crash. this happened around 7:00 last night. it left one of the cars pretty banged up as you can see. medics took three people to the hospital. 8th and sheridan reopened shortly before 11:00 last night. rough ending to red rocks concert for one woman. her truck rolled off the edge

night. police say the woman was not in the truck, but over it went, and she chased it as it rolled off the cliff. firefighters pulled her back up to the parking lot. only on 4, incredible surveillance video shows a man attacking a woman outside a stranger's front door. that man you see here is on the run this morning. it happened in wheat ridge. the homeowner, a stranger, rushes out to help the woman, and that suspect apparently shoots he the woman. investigators are looking for that man. he is 32-year-old jesus garcia. the attack happened in the 4300 block of new land street. cbs4's shawn chitness is live at the wheat ridge police department. we talked to that homeowner who really risked his life to help this woman. >> reporter: yeah, he was definitely being brave in that moment right after a scary

caught on surveillance video. very impressive to see what was happening by brian geer's house. you see this woman rushing to ask for help, and her boyfriend emerging, jesus garcia, and grabbing her, this was around 330 in the morning sunday. geer woke up to his door bell ringing and garcia shot his girlfriend and starts to drag her away from the door. geer tries to go after him. he was hopito out of the suspect's hand. he ends up getting shot in the leg himself, but does help the woman break free. some are calling him a hero. >> i think i helped. i think i helped when some people might not have, but i don't know if that's hero status. >> reporter: he could use a little bit of help now trying to take care of the medical expenses that came out of that

and see his go gofundme page. shawn chitness, cbs4. people are mourning the loss of a father and husband shot and killed in aurora. the gunman is still on the run this morning. we learned the man died from the shooting last month. someone shot him at a home on north eola in the boston heights neighborhood. police are hoping someone has information. hillary clinton and donald trump are getting ready for sunday d now. but a lot of people are talking about a recent donald trump rally speech in nevada. he told people how to pronounce the name of their home state yesterday, but incorrectly. >> nevada. and do you know what i said? you know what i said? i said, when i came out here, i said nobody says it the other way. it has to be nevada. right? >> nevada senator and minority leader harry reid issues a

from his penthouse his daddy bought him to lecture us on how to pronounce nevada, he could pronounce it correctly. today donald trump holds a town hall type event for the press in new hampshire. could have new runs to play on the end of the year. crews are adding three new runs and replacing two lifts for one that is it adds 15 acres of ski space to eldora. crews have the loveland snow guns working overtime this week because of the cooler temperatures. this is video from loveland. thank you, dustin. loveland hopes to open in a few weeks. 6:10 now. temperature 47 in denver. he's what's coming up next. samsung products are smoking

f0 welcome back. it's time for weather and traffic on the 4's. a live look from our camera at mile high. it is a cloudy, wet and chilly morning to get the day started here along the front range. as we take a look at the radar, we've got snow in the mountains, rain around denver and all along the urban corridor. in fact, a heavier rain band has developed for the northwestern suburbs of town.

285 above morrison that rain transitions into snow. there's that heavier rain from lakewood up to lafayette and thornton. fort collins, loveland, greeley, windsor all seeing light rain this morning. we're in the 40s along the i-25 corridor. 30s in the colorado high country. temperatures will not climb very much today from where they are right now. highs will only be in the 50s this afternoon, and overall will be our coolest day in five months. last time we had a day this cool was in may. going forward starting at 7:00 a.m., mountain snow, front range rain, and rain on the eastern plains as well. closer to lunch today, the rain will taper off. snow in the high country will taper off as well, but won't end completely. eastern plains some of that rain will transition to snow from sterling to nebraska. here's 7:00 this evening, by

be over with. skies clear. and tomorrow we expect to have our first official freeze of the season. 31 freeze warning for tomorrow. 64 tomorrow afternoon. and a beautiful weekend ahead. saturday, sunday, and even monday highs in the 70s with sunshine. joel. southbound coming into town is a tough drive now. we've got a traffic alert we're following as we've got the center lanes blocked off at 84th. cdot has turned this camera around. look at that, the b 20s into the teens and single digits. eastbound along i-270 is heavy. the earlier accident traveling eastbound along u.s. 6 at wadsworth is cleared, but may be a new accident in the northbound direction. this is the road weather index.

because we've had so much rain. lakewood, arvada, broomfield, lafayette along 287, portions of 6th and colfax as well. it's going to be a tough drive. we have an accident in the northbound direction of santa fe. you can see along 285 as well areas of standing water. into the high country, a different situation. ice and snow. tough drive along 285 and i-70 as and passenger track restrictions in place, not only to the eisenhower and johnson tunnels but u.s. 6 over loveland pass and vail pass as well. another phone fire for samsung, but this one is causing new worries. and taco bell lets you catch z's with that chalupa. jill wagner live from the floor of the new york stock exchange now. jill. >> reporter: good morning, alan.

the markets higher. dow rose 112 points. futures pointing to a lower open. samsung trying to figure out why a replacement galaxy smartphone started to smoke, forcing the evacuation of a flight. the plane was still at the gate. the phone's owner said he turned the phone off when he noticed the smoke. users of prepaid debit wards will soon have some of the protections as other debit cards users. new rules from the federal government are about in the making, including protections for lost or stolen cards, clearly marked fees, and providing users basic account information free of charge. and taco bell is offering some fans a chance to sleepover. taco bell in canada is offering

their new quesadilla. >> that's different. >> reporter: laugh at the, i like when my moneywatch report is done with laughter. >> it's just great. >> now i'm hungry. let's get to our top stories this morning. new video shows the procession for a los angeles county sheriff sergeant killed in the line of duty. investigators say a man shot 53- year-old steven owen while he worked a burglary call yesterday. he died at the hospit two hours later. the suspected shooter is behind bars and officers have not released that person's name. prosecutors are charging a national security agency contractor with stealing secrets that can threaten national security. federal agents arrested 51-year- old harold thomas martin iii in august but the story just came out. investigators are trying to figure out if he stole information and disclosed likely classified computer

welcome back. weather and traffic on the 4's. live look outside along lincoln street here in downtown denver. the rain coming down. light to moderate rain throughout the denver, boulder and fort collins areas. then once you make your way into the we have snow this morning. rain and snow will create travel issues across colorado. i don't think we'll have enough of an issue at dia to create major impacts at our airport. this is a regional storm, so wyoming, nebraska, rain and snow today as well. rain throughout much of the midwest into chicago, where we have delays. nice in the southeast. atlanta 81 with sunshine today. new york city at 71 with sunny skies. of course rain in florida as the outer rain bands of

state today. again, the only major airport issue now is in chicago with those florida airports, orlando, miami, issues later today. a lot of flashing lights this morning. this is southbound coming into town. originally was just the center lanes blocked. now the whole right side of the interstate blocked. that's making for a mess of a drive southbound coming down into town. the other portion is all the rain ashton has been tracking this morning, affecting lakewood broomfield, lafayette even portions of c-470 further to ken caryl. the drive loading up westbound along i-70, if you are heading out to the airport inbound along pena boulevard, that should be a good drive for you. cbs4 investigator brian maass asks rtd what it planed to about all the noise complaints from the train to the airport. here's the story you'll see tonight at 10:00.

this is the news at 6:30. could be a wet day along the front range. if you go to the high country, you're going to be feeling the snow. that's a live picture from the eisenhower tunnel now. you can see on the left the blur on our camera, because we have rain, some heavy in a few places around. in the southeast u.s. we have another problem. >> here's a live look from people living along the eastern portion of the united states have been buying supplies and hunkering down. the governors in south carolina and florida have asked people living along the coast to move inland. now 25 people have been killed and it's blamed on hurricane matthew, which has already battered the carribean. >> the potential of this storm is really frightening for florida. good morning, everybody, i'm alan gionet. >> i'm britt moreno. thanks for joining us this morning. let's get up to the roof where poor ashton, welcome to town, bringing up the umbrella.

west bank doctors say he is undergoing a heart test. the 81-year-old went to the hospital yesterday after feeling tired. a driver is in custody this morning after crashing into another car in denver. a police helicopter followed that red car there eastbound on 14th avenue. the driver crashed into a blue car heading north on downing. the driver then tried to take off. police arrested the person nearby and no one is hurt. officers are not saying helicopter was originally following the driver. only on cbs4, a man is on the run after kitchening a woman -- kidnapping a woman and shooting a good samaritan. this is caught on home surveillance video. this is an attack in wheat ridge and this guy is still on the loose. shawn chitness live at wheat ridge police department. tell us the story. >> reporter: it certainly is

this scary attack and then this brave effort by the homeowner to try and help out that woman. now we know that even though those two were shot, they are going to be okay. but the search for that suspect continues. his name is jesus garcia. he's 32 years old and accused of shooting not only his girlfriend, but also the good samaritan in this case. police say he should be considered armed and dangerous. here's that video we've been talking about, where we see woman trying to ask for help and her boyfriend showing up, grabbing her, all around 3:30 in the morning sunday. geer woke up to the sound of his door bell. and garcia shot that woman and starts to drag her away from the door. he comes out, the homeowner, tries to go after the suspect hoping to get that gun out of his hand, but instead he gets shot in the leg, but is also

into the single digits. there's a 4 along there. that just turned into a 3. so 64 minutes from thornton to denver this morning. i'd recommend taking federal or colorado to get down into town this morning. here's what we're facing as well. you saw ashton tracking all that heavy rain we have really from erie down to ken caryl. this is affecting the drive west of i-25. we have areas of standing water along i-76, along i-70 itsel it doesn't take a lot of speed to get hydroplaning and maybe you haven't checked out your tires, we may need more tread on those tires. across the denver metro area, a portion of i-225 in the northbound direction, a pair of accidents. up into the high country, we're dealing with rain in town, but snow up that direction.

roared through the bahamas, parts of florida became a ghost town. >> don't become a victim. make sure you get out and get out tonight. >> reporter: people along the east coast began heeding evacuation warnings yesterday, flocking to gas stations to fill up. >> i've driven around looking for gas and the gas stations haven't had any gas. >> reporter: as others cleared store shelves and boarded up their properties, this boater in daytona beach decided to move further inland. >> we've ridden out a lot of storms in the past but this one i think will be more dramatic. f0 >> reporter: hurricane matthew is expected to regain strength over the next few hours. officials say people along the florida coast ould begin feeling its effects by tonight. >> we'll start feeling storm force winds and could potentially feel hurricane force winds, too, for an extended period of time. >> reporter: the storm has already left behind a path of destruction in haiti and cuba, flattening homes, flooding streets and knocking out power. the coast guard is warning people to stay out of the water. >> definitely not a good time

dozens of flights have been callings eled. our jamie leary is live at the airport with a look at what's happening there. >> reporter: good morning, britt. we've noticed a little bit of a trend. now arrivals are a different story than from departures. we definitely have a miami flight here that's been canceled. it was supposed to arrive at dia. there is an atlanta flight supposed to come in around 7:25, that also canceled. a total between fort lauderdale, miami and orlando all canceled starting this afternoon and going through midnight tonight. the trend, i just talked to an official at the southwest airlines counter, he told me the flights this morning are pretty much a go, and that's pretty much across the boards. united said they have an 8:25 flight departing. so there are people that are actually going to florida today. starting around 1:00 that's

eye on the misery map. this map shows you the broad picture of what we're looking at from flight aware. you can see miami definitely the crux of all the cancellations. 35 cancellations that have been occurring since 4:00 a.m. 1600 nationwide. the crux of those are stemming out of miami. again, if you are flying in that area, make sure that you check your flight status, because those stopping come this afternoon. i saw some cancellations even starting as early as 11:15. we're going to stay out here and keep an eye on the situation. jamie leary, cbs4 morning news. >> jamie, thanks so much for the update. last night's red rocks concert did not end well for one woman. her truck rolled off the edge of the upper parking lot.

she did chase it and she fell. new this morning, an aurora father and husband is now dead after a shooting last month. we have learned the man died, somebody shot him on september 28th at a home on north iola east of havana. he died three days later. people are hoping somebody out there has some information about the person who return to their homes in the area of the beulah hill fire. there is a chance of rain today, about 20%. several hundred evacuees returned home yesterday. the fire started monday and it quickly burned eight homes. the fbi is looking into how leaders in the town of lyons spent flood recovery money. fbi and federal housing agents have seized documents and searched computers, part of a

related to its flood recovery work. the town has placed two employees on temporary paid administrative leave. people in the town want answers about this investigation. >> that kind of raises a little bit of a flag when you get the feds involved in something going on in this little tiny town. >> i want to keep my faith in them, because it was a struggle for everybody, including them. >> an audit by the department of homeland security back in did not comply with some fema guidelines, and finished projects without their approval. it's unclear if this investigation is related to those findings. hillary clinton and donald trump are spending time getting ready for sunday's second presidential debate. this one is a town hall-style in st. louis. the democratic nominee is preparing away from the campaign trail today, while the republican nominee holds a small town meeting in new

snow following in the colorado high country. it is a very busy start to the day in terms of range. along the front range we have rain, a lot of rain. very heavy rain. this is unusual for this time of day. look at this heavy rain band that's developed. it's from wheat ridge to thornton and toward brighton, and this is would we've been talking -- where we've been talking about the potential street flooding. above morrison, above genesee, that's where it transitions into snow. similar situation along highway 34, out of loveland towards estes park it transitions into all snow. temperatures now in the 40s. we will stay safely above freezing in denver. nothing but rain for us. the snow will be confined to the higher elevations. 20s and 30s now in the mountains. highs in the high country in the 40s. let me show you the futurecast. starting at 7:00 a.m., all that rain and snow.
