finally rain in the metro area, as we wake up to a wet morning commute. this is the news. when we went to higher elevations just outside the metro area, we had snow. i'm britt moreno. thanks for joining us. now you're looking at video from evergreen. i love seeing the wildlife.

now we have to fight the cold. >> that's right. today will be the coolest day we've experienced since may. and much welcomed precipitation. rain and snow across colorado today. we still have some snow falling in the colorado high country. i want to first start with a thunderstorm that is just to the east of boulder. if you're in eastern boulder county, even in parts of southern larimer county you may be hearing a little bit of thunder, a around erie. i-70 corridor, once you get past morrison going all the way up towards idaho springs, that's where we have the snow continuing to fall. we'll be watching this because it's possible a few snowflakes could be mixed in as all that heavier rain makes it's way to sterling. high temperatures today lower 50s. again, it will be the coolest day since may have. freeze warning for tonight, as temperatures drop to around 31.

first official freeze of the season for the denver area. if you still have sensitive plants, get those covered up. let's take you into the bahamas. we've been talking about hurricane matthew. look at the size of that storm. you can see the well pronounced eye wall there. it's getting closer to miami, florida. it is a category 4 storm this midday with maximum wind of 140 miles per hour. watch it as it makes its way up the east coast of florida between now morning. this will have a big impact on florida, the coast of georgia, south carolina as well. as we get into the weekend it will make a hard right turn as it moves towards merit myrtle beach and into the atlantic. britt. thank you so much.

has some governors preparing. marlie hall is in daytona beach. >> reporter: boarded up signs, closed for business, as hurricane matthew approaches florida forecasters say it's strengthened to a category 4 storm. >> this is serious. >> reporter: the governor is concerned about the storm's powerful winds and storm surge. more than 1.5 million people in the storm's path have been told to evacuate. >> there you need to leave. evacuate, evacuate, evacuate. >> reporter: storm preparations continue to cross florida. shelves are empty. officials issued hurricane warnings and watches from florida to south carolina. here in daytona beach streets are empty. most people have evacuated. but across the state, 1500 national guard troops have been called up just in case.

morning, packing winds up to 125 miles per hour. roads are littered with debris. matthew devastated parts of haiti. poorly constructed homes are completely gone. people wadeed through knee deep high water trying to reach higher ground. matthew is blamed for at least 25 deaths and that number could rise. marlie hall, cbs news. back here at leary is at denver international airport. matthew has caused dozens of flight cancellations. >> reporter: there are still flights coming out of dia to florida and from florida to colorado. miami said most of their flights aren't flying at this point in time. even orlando said it will stop operations tonight at 8:00 east coast time. we spoke with one denver nurse

she got the last seat on the plane home this morning, and she fears other denver nurses will be stuck forget weekend. >> i think 30 of us there from the hospital and i'm worried about them. hopefully they'll be okay. the cancellations on the misery map have been climbing throughout this morning. 47 flights have been cancel since 9:00 this morning. more than 1700 flights have been canceled today total. here in denver, early morning flights were taking off, and united flight this morning was full when it left for dia to orlando. we caught up with a couple of passengers. one woman from denver said she canceled a golf outing and

her colleagues had different ideas. >> i was checking e-mails and they had to cut the course short, but they did go out this morning in the rain and gave it a try, as i guess any golfer would. >> reporter: die hard golfers? >> yes, they are. i'm not. it's why i left. >> yeah, i'm a little bit concerned. one of the first major ones we've had in years. going that long period of time without having one, and category 4 rolling through, it's kind many of the theme parks and attractions in orlando have closed. disney is closed for the fourth time in its 45-year history. that goes to show how you things are getting there now. airlines are offering vouchers for flyers to rebook.

one last flight out of orlando to dia. >> jamie, thank you so much. new information about the beulah hill wildfire and how this happened. investigators say a cdot excavator may have started it. it was at the open center of that -- epicenter of that fire. the cdot worker tried hard to it's burned eight square miles and is 50% contained. it destroyed eight homes already. police want to find this man, jesus garcia, accused of trying to kidnap a woman. he shot her allegedly, and another man, and then as that man was trying to come to her defense, that's when he fired shots. it's captured on surveillance video. our karen morfitt talked to the

[ screaming ] >> reporter: those panicked screams are what one man woke up to friday morning. a woman was running from her boyfriend. she showed up on geer's front porch ringing the door bell. video shows that suspect grabbing the young woman and then shooting her in the leg. [ screaming ] >> reporter: he then starts to drag ler into the street. >> i don't know really what my plan was. i don't know >> reporter: without hesitation, geer intervenes, doing his best to fight the suspect off. >> i wanted to get him off of her. i think i was hoping to hit him hard enough to knock the gun out of his hand. >> reporter: she was able to break free, but he didn't drop that gun, instead he shot geer in the femur and took off. after years of working as a paramedic he started to react to his wound and the woman

to his own door step. >> looking back it really does scare me. i don't want to leave my kid without a dad or my wife without a husband. >> reporter: days later, with a lull lodged in his lower abdomen, he is laughing again and focused on recovery. >> happy she picked our door. hate to think what might have been. >> that was karen morfitt reporting. we are still waiting for police to identify the man shot and killed on the cu boulder ca yesterday. that man was apparently wielding a machete. officers say they did not follow directions. that's when a boulder officer shot him. it happened around 9:15 yesterday morning at the champion center. an rv dealership in frederick hopes someone will recognize these vehicles. three expensive rv's disappeared from the transwest truck trailer lot in recent days. they're between 400 grand and $600,000 a pop.

could be more, but we'll take it. we see the cloudy skies. still light rain around the area. had a few rumbles of thunder around erie and east side of boulder a short time ago. let me show you the snow totals. west side of evergreen 5 inches reported. breckenridge 3 inches of snow. winter park reporting 3 inches of snow as well. we've got several of our weather watchers reporting and showing got. bailey, mike up there got a inches. love the weather watcher's snow stick. great time of year when we see all the patio furniture pictures showing the snow. it's one of the best ways to show the snow. this is a loop over the last two hours. we had that lightning earlier to the north of thornton, broomfield that way. a little bit showing up on 285, could have a few thunder snow

eastern plains is really the heaviest precipitation we have at this point along i-76, making its way up to sterling. here's the futurecast. we'll start this at 1:00. you can see the snow in the foothills, places like jefferson county into boulder county. farther north towards estes park. and all the rain along i-76. as we go through the afternoon we're going to see less and less rain and snow. by this evening what's left should be ending quickly. and by dark tonight i don't think there will be any precat night. larry in brush has 45 degrees now. if that gets colder we'll get concerned about that rain changing to snow up there. meanwhile, susan has 42 degrees in the broomfield area. 45 now greeley. it's 41 currently in boulder. this afternoon high temperatures only in the lower to middle 50s. it will be our coolest day since may. 53 for the high. scattered showers still possible through the rest of the day.

buddy shelter in castle rock, south of the outlet mall. a consumer alert after a samsung phone overheated and forced the evacuation of an entire passenger jet. its owner said it was a replacement for the recalled ones. kris van cleave explains the new concern. >> just smoke and popping and sizzling sound. >> reporter: brian greene says that noise was coming from the galaxy note 7 he had tucked into his pocket power it down. >> a few seconds later i heard some popping that sounded like a ziploc bag popping open, and looked around to see what that was, and there was smoke billowing, pouring out of my pocket. >> we have smoke in the cabin -- emergency equipment over here? >> reporter: crews evacuated the flight as it sat at the gate at louisville international airport. the consumer products safety commission announced a recall last month of about a million

the u.s. alone, noting 92 reports of batteries overheating, burning at least 26 people and damaging property at least 55 times. >> we're moving aggressively to investigate this incident. >> reporter: the head of cpsc says it's looking into greene's claims the phone was a replacement. green showed us the serial number, which according to samsung's web site, is not among the list of affected devices. >> we need to figure that out, and it has to be verified. >> reporter: for now, brian greene is no longer using a samsung phone. >> it's scary to think i could have been driving and this happened, somebody could have had this in their luggage on the plane. >> reporter: samsung says it's working with authorities and southwest to recover the device and figure out the cause, but says since it hasn't examined the phone it hasn't confirmed
