read heroes need heroes. the suicidal man who shot detective brite died in september. you can watch more video of brite's release from the hospital on cbsdenver.com. we have a weather alert for you tonight. we're following that emergency situation along our southeast coast as hurricane matthew roars toward florida. look at the force of this category 4 storm as it hit the bahamas earlier today. we'll have a live report in just a couple minutes. first, g cold night in colorado. snow crept close to denver last night. this was the scene this morning in evergreen where we caught this elk happy as can be in the cold temperatures. >> judy williams sending this picture of the snow this morning in dory lakes near black hawk. now we've got a freeze warning in effect for the night. >> much of the denver area included in that warning. meteorologist lauren whitney. we might not have escaped the

>> no, we'll probably dip just below the freezing mark in denver. skies are clear right now. we did have early morning rain and snow in parts of the high country but our skies are clearing. there's still moisture in the state. because of our clearing skies and cool temperatures today, we're actually talking about a freeze warning that's going to be in place tonight. we're looking at temperatures to get to the low 30s and mid 20s. here across the front range, all the i-25 corridor and eastern plains. we have this for our far northwestern corner in parts of on the eastern plains, we actually have a frost advisory in place tonight. it's going to get a little bit chilly around here. cover your plants if you haven't done so. tonight could do damage if you have tomatoes left or zucchini. maybe you can pick them before you go to bed. we're at look-out mountain. it is a little bit chilly once the sun starts to dip behind the trees. 43 on look-out mountain but there's a little bit of a breeze so it feels a little bit cooler. tonight expect these

freezing. in many areas we may be in the 20s. some extra hot coffee in the morning. right now take a look at the traffic in florida as people leave the coastlines in advance of hurricane matthew. evacuations also underway in georgia, south carolina, more than 100 people died in haiti. more video came out of that area today giving us a better idea of the storm's impact. here's ed greene tracking the storm for us. this category monster you see right there could make landfall around this t going to refresh these computer models coming up in just a few minutes. first, don champion is on the edge of the storm in port orange, florida. don, buckle down. here we go. >> good evening, karen. i'd say within the past hour we started to see some of the sustained winds moving in this area. also a lot more rain bands moving here as well. further south folks down in that part of florida will begin to feel the hurricane conditions in just a few hours.

still just ahead. >> reporter: whipping winds and powerful waves along florida's coastline are signs of the trouble to come. matthew is barreling toward the florida coast as a category 4 hurricane and it could get even stronger. governor rick scott insists the storm isn't one to take lightly. >> if you're in the evacuation zone, get out. this is not something you should take a chance with. >> reporter: ken in the coastal town of port orange seems to be on the the storm in the house he built. >> i ride the storm out, just in case i at least have the opportunity to try to repair something that may be able to salvage the home. >> reporter: not far away gary took his boat out of the water. he's a retired firefighter and says residents who stay behind do so at their own risk. >> when it gets bad and they call 911, they don't leave the fire house. they don't leave until after. >> reporter: this area where

underwater by this time friday when a powerful storm surge and huge waves are expected to inundate the coast. hurricane conditions are even expected inland in orlando where disney is closing its theme parks. at least 2500 national guard troops have been called up. they're preparing supplies and rescue boats. >> as matthew makes his presence known here along the of florida including the area where the storm could make landfall overnight, it has never been hit by a major hurricane. within the past hour, residents in the area have been told they should be in place wherever they plan to ride out this storm. we should mention about more than 3,000 people are in shelters set up around the state at this hour. >> don, thanks. i'm sure that number will grow.

closed. >> the last flights to denver just landed here at d.i.a. our jennifer brice is there. sounds like some people just got out in time. >> that is right. orlando airport closed around 5 p.m. our time. the other airports, earlier today. we found travelers who were scrambling to get out of florida to make their way to denver just before the hurricane came in. >> reporter: floridians like cheryl and ron jones for a colorado wedding. they got out of orlando just as hurricane matthew plans to slam the coast. >> we were the very last flight out of orlando. >> we boarded up all the windows yesterday. i wasn't going to board at first but when they changed the predicted path to doing a loop around and coming back across florida, i decided i better board up the windows before i left. >> reporter: most travelers told us the storms come and go. it's a way of life if you live in florida.

is different. >> the last storms we had were the three and they were devastating. and everybody's become very complacent because we haven't had one. this is a big one. >> reporter: david came to denver from costa rica for the great american beer festival. he said he rerouted his flights before the airport closure in miami so he would not miss the big event. >> because of the hurricane i got on the first flight out of miami to denver. >> because you didn't want to miss the beer festival. >> didn't want to festival. >> he's a dedicated guy. he says he's been coming many, many years. i'm told 3700 flights have been canceled out of florida as a result of this hurricane. live at d.i.a., jennifer brice, cbs4 news. developing tonight, what started as a bizarre call from police ends with officers finding a body. aurora police say someone called and reported a mannequin sitting on its side in side creek park with a weapon near tower and

found a man dead. at this point they're calling the death suspicious. they say there's no threat to the public. new developments tonight in the investigation to a large wildfire that led to the evacuation of a town in colorado. investigators suspect a cdot employee's equipment started all of this. nearly 2,000 people had to leave their homes in beulah near pueblo. the fire destroyed at least eight homes there. cbs4's rick sallinger live for us tonight. you did just talk with cdot. >> clearly taking responsibility for this accident. it is giving $5,000 right off the bat to families who lost their home, and that's just the beginning. >> reporter: it was big, fast, and destructive. the fire wiped out eight homes and numerous outbuildings. now it appears it all began with a cdot worker moving rocks to prevent erosion. >> what we presume happen or

that's maybe what started this fire. >> reporter: the equipment involved the cdot employee who simultaneously called 911 and tried to put out the fire with dirt and rocks. winds at the time were clocked between 30 and 50 miles per hour. the point of origin, near the track hoe. >> the only thing we could not eliminate at the site by the detectives on scene or through forensic analysis of the power >> reporter: those who lost their homes are now turning to the state for compensation. >> this is one of those situations again where we recognize that it was incredibly difficult and the fact that this was an accident is very tough on all of us, especially the gentleman who was involved. >> this is being called a tragic accident. you may remember the lower north fork fire near conifer some years ago.

that fire. since then, the laws have been rewritten, making it easier for homeowners to sue the state for more money. rick sallinger, cbs4 news. happening now, the search for three very pricey rvs. look at the surveillance video. you see at least four thieves casually walk on to the prope truck drops them off at the fence. the crooks hop in to the three luxurious rvs and simply drive them off the lot. those rvs valued at well over a million dollars. now we want the news from the campaign trail. donald trump and hillary clinton are preparing for their second debate. the vice presidential candidates fought for voters in battleground states.

this is the news developing tonight as a family prepares to bury a husband and a father. they also want answers as to why anyone would kill him. the victim was pulled from a car and shot. he was found in an aurora neighborhood last week. that crime scene on north iola in the andrea flores joins us. the victim lived there. >> this is the last place that miguel freyre was seen by family members. they're trying to figure out why he was shot clear across town in aurora and left for dad. >> she asks me all the time, where's my daddy? i don't know how to tell her your daddy is not coming. >> reporter: bonnie can't

22-year-old miguel freyre was mysteriously killed last wednesday. >> he told me he was going to go play pool with two of his friends. the last thing he told me was i love you. >> reporter: aurora police found the father shot in the head near 22nd and iola. neighbors in the area who did not want to be identified say they saw freyre sitting in a parked car when another car pulled up alongside him. they say two men freyre from the car, shot him, and ran. >> he was a nice person. he never had any kind of problems like that. >> reporter: he was transported to a hospital and died three days later. now the family hopes a $2,000 crimestoppers reward will help police track down the killer. >> you already took him away from us. you already destroyed our lives. just come forward and say what you did to him. >> i just want justice to be

saturday. see this turn we've got going on here, we've got another hurricane out here. this is nicole. looks like it's going to wander around out here and not come toward the u.s. at all. here's what i want to show you. take a look at the spaghetti plot. all the models are showing where they think this hurricane is going to go. right up along the coast. most of them are having it circle back around again. one even comes around and comes back again and hits florida. some of these hit florida on the way down. we're watching this veryca yet. we've got a freeze warning and frost advisory. the dark is the freeze warning you see from the west all the way to the eastern plains including the metro area and way out here on the eastern plains we have the frost advisory. goes from midnight tonight until 9 a.m. tomorrow morning. here's the hour by hour. couple scattered rain and snow showers. they all die down. then the clouds quickly move out. as they do we're running continue on friday. sunshine all over the state. a little bit cooler. 53 and 54 the highs we saw today

should be at 69 and 40 for this time of year. 53 and 51 right now. northeast 13 for the winds. feels a little brisk out there. 56% humidity with a rise in barometer. snow amounts, you can see dylan, 2 and a half inches. 3 in grant and conifer. 4 in pine junction. silver plume, 4 and a half. here's some of the snow from jeremy swanson. this is a pretty shot on aspen streets. this is winter park. you can see the snow there. and we have this one acquaintance bailey, one of our weather watchers. we took out his official weather watcher measuring stick and he got 5 inches of new snow. temperatures tonight will be chilly. eastern plains 20s and 30s. we'll find teens and 20s for the high country. 20s and 30s out west. then tomorrow start to moderate the temperatures. 50s, 60s, nearing 70 degrees over the eastern plains. 50s for the mountains. 50s, 60s, to near 70 out west. your forecast goes this way. clearing skies tonight. with that, the freeze warning.
