springs officers yesterday. riverside county deputies say 26-year-old john felix is the suspect. another officer was injured and remains in the hospital this morning. officers were trying to resolve a family dispute when man they were talking to suddenly pulled out a gun and opened fire. the two fallen officers have been identified 27-year-old leslie zerebny just returned from maturnity leaven. 63-year-old -- leave. 63 jose bill gert to retire -- gilbert vega was set to retire in december. tropical storm matthew has been downgraded to a post tropical cyclone. the storm continues to sweep along the east coast. it has caused billions of dollars of damage and killed at least 10 people in the u.s. and nearly a thousand more in the caribbean. there is a high risk of flash flooding through the morning across parts of north carolina and southeast virginia.

9th. let's check the forecast with dave aguilera. good morning. >> good morning. we have had some pretty nice weekend around here. we have another one we are in the middle of right now this morning. it's not as cold as this point in the morning yesterday. some of us need a jacket like with 32 at city park it's 44 and highlands ranch it's 44 as well. up in evergreen the weather watcher john kirkpatrick is coming in at 40 degrees right on the button. now we have had some clouds oozing from down south into the state this morning. so we will have partly cloudy skies at least in the mountains and over the denver metro area. that will filter out a little bit of the sunshine but still we have a nice day going on. about 55 at 9 a.m. 70 at noon and should be about 76 for the high temperature this afternoon. a few high clouds passing by. a stellar sunday on way. tomorrow gets warmer and a cooldown in the week ahead and one day in the week ahead might have rain for us. so we will outline that for you

mails they have and the state department says they will release additional clinton e mails over the next two weeks from her time as secretary of state. all-- all these issues will come up during the second presidential debate. we will have coverage starting at 7:00 right here on cbs4. right now firefighters are keeping an eye on a grass fire burning in summit county. it started yesterday afternoon on the east side of lake dillon near the county shooting range. fire officials say acres burned. crews use two helicopters to battle the flames. no structures are threatened and we are told the firefighting efforts will continue today. tomorrow gley. >> reporter: a police are looking -- arecording a police are look for -- aurora police are looking for a man involved in a shooting yesterday. they want to find christopher rimpson. police received several reports of a possible kidnapping in the

connection between working the night shift and breast cancer risk. researchers from oxford university followed a total of 800,000 women in 3 large studies and found no increased risk. findings question the world health organization's 2007 assessment that shift work could increase the chance of developing cancer. a new study in pediatrics suggest children who take vitamin supplements or are treated by a chiropractor are less likely to receive flu that there's a need for cooperation between health care practitioners to increase flu vaccinations. and a suddeny of -- study of 800 adults in singapore found activity trackers by themselves didn't lead people to walk or exercise more but researchers found people given both a fitness tracker and cash rewards for meeting the goals were far more likely to boost their activity levels and continue to use the devices.

tropical. just a big low pressure area as it is weakening 60 miles east southeast of cape hatteras. so that's in good shape and weather models have it going out to sea. that's good. it's not going to take that turn that a lot of the models were indicating last week. so florida should see that moving away. thankfully. all right, temperatures around colorado pretty nice this morning. 39 in colorado springs and fort collins. 30 on the button in avont western slope and we do have some high clouds drifting in from new mexico. there's a little disturbance down here that's raining a little bit near durango and up above 11,000 feet a little snow down in the san juans as well. that will be the trend throughout the day. as we look at the big picture there is a high pressure ridge here but it's weak. so it's allowing some of the moisture just to filter into colorado. if you look at the map, there's a cold front going through nebraska right now that just backed into northeastern

so i am not looking for that to back up into colorado. but if you live out there in some of the extreme northeastern communities out there you are cooler this morning than you probably were yesterday. all right. here we go with the futurecast. you can see the rain moving in down south and the high clouds up to the north. so we have got a dry day again for the mile high city today. temperatures across the state, 70s here in the east. and the west with mostly 6 0? in the mountains. might -- 60s in the mountains. might be a good day to check past the peak. kick off for the bronco game sunshine with a few high clouds. 76 to get the game going this afternoon. tomorrow, even warmer at 79. 74 on tuesday with a chance of some isolated showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. that will come if with a cold front at that will dip us down to about 59 for wednesday. and then 70 degrees on thursday. we have bounced right back so just a little dip coming on wednesday. i wish we could squeeze more

last night. >> it's reported that it's under water right now. >> reporter: the deluge reached as far west as raleigh damaging homes and businesses. a fema search and rescue team from new york city saved three people in fayetteville after the suv got stuck in the rushing water. matthew hugged the southeast coastline as it moved north sparing coastal communities from severe wind but causing devastating flooding like here in charleston there. are reports of scattered looting at homes and business garden city george into frustrating because people don't care about what they got. i mean, local store right here to help the community and everything try to get opened up. >> florida matthew caused coastal erosion wiping away beaches and destroying coastal roads. experts predict matthew will leave behind 4 to 6 billion dollars worth of damage in the u.s. impressive sum but less than super storm sandy's 20 billion and hurricane katrina's 40 billion.

lawrence cbs news charleston south carolina. >> there's high risk of flash flooding through the morning across parts of north carolina and southeast virginia. new video this morning of a huge fire destroying several buildings in north myrtle beach south carolina. this happened last night. as you can see the buildings are on ocean front property which was evacuated ahead of hurricane matthewch the wind from the storm -- matthew. wind from the storm blew embers on homes and firefighters got trouble get together scene floodedch the fire spread to 4 buildings when they arrived. no injuries reported and it's not clear what started the fire. a train derailment leaves more than two dozen people hurt. it happened last night east of new york city. investigators say a long island railroad commuter train side wiped a work train causing the cars to jump the tracks. the people hurt are expected to be okay. 600 people were on board. federal investigators are looking into the cause of that

nederland firefighter charlie schmidtmann saw his home burn to the ground he's battled the cold springs fire in july. among the treasures lost, one of his family dogs a st. bernard named geno. >> that was what really made me like sick to my stomach. >> you guys remember there was some fires in nederland colorado this summer. >> reporter: in the month since the community and others have stepped in to help charlie and his wife bretlyn. >> she is a hockey player. >> reporter: saturday morning the dog nation hockey foundation hd denver. bretlyn schmidtmann's friends enconcerned her to take part. at end there was a special price. >> dog nation want to give you and charl yea $10,000 check. >> reporter: dog nation raises money every year to help hockey families in need. this year though the foundation had a little something extra up their jersey sleeves. >> we have one more thing for you. and that's a st. bernard puppy.

of hurricane matthew were buried yesterday. families grieved for one man and his #-year-old girl -- 3- year-old girl both killed in the natural disaster. they are two of the hundreds who died in just one district. emergency crews fear the death toll could be much higher as they make their way to mountain villages. dave is here with the forecast and we know hurricane matthew has since been downgraded. >> downgraded post tropical now. just becoming a big low pressure area out there. so that's really good news for the east co but there's still it be they are recovering from massive flooding up and down the eastern sea -- they are recovering from massive flooding up and down the eastern seaboard a beautiful shot and there another beautiful mountain shot from peter the georgetown loop railroad and you can see stale little color up there. but a lot of the leaves have dropped already. but still looks gorgeous up there. that's a great ride if you never partake of that. give it a shot. all right. current temperatures this

25 degrees there. it's 45 in grand junction. 36 in so lieda and boulder is at 43 degrees. ron is the weather watcher in lone tree at 47 degrees. we have high clouds drifting in from new mexico. a little storm system is down there and we are picking up a little bit of rain and a little mountain snow up high between durango and telluride. there's believe it or not a high pressure ridge over colorado that's weak so the is pushing up moisture and it's filtering out a little bit. but still, allowing the clouds to move through. also a cold front trying to nose into northeastern colorado. but the high should be strong enough to hold that out. so temperatures will be very nice today. showers and thunderstorms will be popping up over southern colorado and high clouds will move into the northern part of the state during the day today. and you can see on the futurecast there, it shows a little bit of light snow mixed with rain up at the higher elevations going on there.

and lots of 70s soothing 70s across the eastern plains. going to the bronco game today, kick off temp about 76. by the 4th quarter we will drop do 72 and then tomorrow, 79 for the high almost 80. it will be warm and it will be breezy and it will be a good day and then tuesday a little cooler at 74. and a chance of an isolated thunderstorm late on tuesday. cooler on wednesday at 59 degrees. but we dry out somewhat and we bounce right back into the 70s in no time at all on high 70 and mostly sunny skies. so all in all looks like a good week. wish we could squeeze more rain out it. >> we need the moist newer we do. something fun is -- moisture. >> we do. something fun is coming up. wine women and football 7th annual event featuring a q and a with bronco players is on november 1 is. >> and cbs4 is a proud sponsor of the event. we team up with volunteers of america and joining us now from the voa is sarah sadler so good morning sarah. >> good morning.
