sort of a medical issue that led to the rack. that bus carrying members of the legacy high school football team crash last month. now to a weather alert at five, get ready for a chilly evening. the elk you see here, if you can see it in there, on lookout mountain but just a few miles up i-70, the sun has made its way out. son has been hidden all day along the front range. the cloud cover is keeping a school. chris spears checking in live with the mobile weather lab togh chris, looks like it's already cleared up where you are. what about downtown? >> reporter: jim, i tell you the further north and east you -- the lower you are in elevation the longer it will take to clear. we widening out and showing you the bank of low clouds and fog over the eastern plains gives us a really great opportunity to give you a little lesson in meteorology. two things happening, the first is what's happening at the surface. take a listen. >> our foggy wednesday was

over the high plains. with clockwise winds around it keeping cool and moist air flowing into eastern colorado. you can see this clearly any visible satellite loop after sunrise. the bank of clouds just sitting all day long. the air mass was shallow, keeping areas along and east of the front range foothills socked in. but just a few thousand feet up into the mountains and foothills, it was a mostly sunny day. >> reporter: was happening at the ground. back out here live in genesee, we're zoomed into the bank of fog. look at the very defined line where it is blue sky above and clouds below. that is what's called an atmospheric inversion. the air above is actually warmer than the air below. jim and karen, the best analogy, it's like a frying pan. if you're below the inversion, you're in the pan.

and it takes a long time sometimes to scour that out. you'll stay cloudy into the evening, lauren whitney will be along in a minute with your full forecast. i'm chris spears, cbs4 news. also developing tonight, the investigation after a school district expels at least five high school students. they may have taken part in a nazi themed facebook chat led by a student who took his own life. andrea flores live at boulder prep high school tonight. andrea, the students attend schools in boulder. >> reporter: that's right. five students were expelled from boulder preparatory high school. but 10 other students from area schools are also facing disciplinary action for comments that they made on facebook including targeting and killing jews. and african-americans. a disturbing facebook chat group . now five boulder preparatory high school students are expelled after a friend's suicide revealed a neo-nazi

both -- boulder police say 15 students from six area schools including boulder high school openly discussed executing jews and african-americans in what they called the fourth reich's official group chat. police say the leader of boulder prep student committed suicide to show his allegiance to the nazi party saying shortly before his death, quote, i have crippling depression but i shall cure it by killing jews. other comments include white and the n-word. haley and dreessen a boulder high student has friends who were in the group and was surprised to learn about their involvement. >> the things i saw on there were just like i would not expect them to say that in real life. >> reporter: boulder valley school district said students involved in the online group face disciplinary action. they issued a statement saying quote, be vsd has a long history of teaching and battling social justice, school

to this important work. but she says racial slurs around boulder high aren't that uncommon. >> we like, 95% of the kids here, definitely yell like slurs or are joking around and like, jokingly say racist things. >> reporter: boulder pd says there was not enough evidence to support criminal action against the 15 students involved. as offensive and repugnant as the online conversation was, criminal charges simply because we disagree with the content. now, boulder high students tell us that the students at their school involved in this facebook chat group are facing disciplinary action including having to be searched every day before they go into school. reporting live in boulder, andrea flores, cbs4 news. now to an update on the evacuation of businesses in nederland. the fbi now taking over the

explosive device. 18 detonated the device early this morning. the threats started yesterday when someone left a backpack near the karbers ridge shopping center. fbi will now work to determine who left that improvised explosive device right outside the nederland police department. presidential campaign landing in colorado once again today as hillary clinton rally's support in pueblo. less than a month away from the election she told that loud crowd to get out and vote november 8. specialist shaun boyd joining us now. into the stretch run, both candidates have their eye on colorado. >> most of the maps show donald trump needs colorado to win. for hillary clinton colorado is a firewall. her support is not as enthusiastic as it was for barack obama. many millennials are backing libertarian gary johnson and some democratic strongholds like pueblo and adams county place a lot of blue-collar democrats are up for grabs this

trump visited pueblo just last week. appealing to the working class as tom mustin shows us, clinton is in pueblo trying to focus on the positive while heading trump's negatives. >> hillary clinton spoke to packed house at the colorado state fairgrounds. hammering donald trump on everything from immigration to treatment of women. while speech was short on specifics, she did make one thing crystal clear. she needs colorado to win the presidency. >> colorado state fairgrounds in pueblo. >> i always feel so welcome when i come to pueblo. i think i'll come here anytime it gets hard in the white house. >> reporter: in her first colorado stop since august the presidential hopeful wasted little time attacking republican rival donald trump. blasting him on his treatment of women, lack of experience and dwindling support in the republican party. >> he has targeted immigrants, african americans, latinos, he's targeted pows, people with

many others. >> reporter: clinton did not discuss her latest crisis. instead sticking to familiar topics like taxes and education. and blasting trump on his negative attack ads. >> that's all they have left. pure negativity. pessimism. >> reporter: clinton's message resonated with many residents. >> trump's rhetoric of hate and hating a different ethnic group , and religious groups, that's not what pueblo >> trump is all about him. hillary is all about the people. >> reporter: colorado has the highest percentage of registered voters in any state in the nation. with mail-in ballots sent monday clinton urged coloradans to get out the vote. >> could not have two more different people running for president than me and donald trump. >> reporter: right after the speech misses clinton boarded a plane for another campaign stop

who said with weeks remaining until the election there is no rest for the weary. in pueblo, tom mustin, cbs4 news. this was clinton's first campaign stop in colorado since august. trump is in florida getting out of the boat, he launched a new attack ads saying the islamic state will quote take over this country if hillary clinton is elected. nbc's donna which -- the e-mail dump exposing the internal works of the clinton campaign. trump says it shows faith is under fire and he says the e- mail shows clinton staffers thought e her private e-mail server. >> notice, anything that goes wrong they blame russia. russia did it. they have no idea. we're being hacked. because we have people that don't know what they're doing. the new e-mails also show members of the clinton team viciously attacking catholics and evangelicals. they attack catholics and evangelicals.

new tonight the ceo of wells fargo is retiring immediately. john stumpf is out after regulators accused the bank of creating more than 2 million fake bank and credit card accounts. stumpf also testified before congre. carolina told to leave as swollen rivers continue to rise. many are expected to crest this weekend with floodwaters from hurricane matthew. at least 20 storm related deaths have already been reported in north carolina. officials now fear that people could be trapped in their homes if the roads and bridges wash away. right now the a-line out to the airport getting back to normal, on his typical schedule

into one of the crossing gates, that caused delays all along the line. the crash badly damaged the gate at 40th and holly. rtd doubled up on trains trying to accommodate as many passengers as possible despite the issue. there are still 5 to 10 minute delays at the holly crossing while crews make repairs. the colorado teenager is followed -- fighting an uphill battle against a disease that strikes women four times her age. >> her doctor believes she may be the youngest woman ever in the united states to develop the most common form of ovarian cancer. health specialist kathy walsh joins us now. how old is this young lady? >> she is 16 believe it or not. her doctor says payton has one of the worst cases of cancer he's ever seen. but she also has the strength and resilience to beat it. >> thanks for coming. >> reporter: at this women's boutique in boulder, a teenager is getting special treatment. >> i want to introduce you to my team. they are so excited to meet you. >> reporter: payton is a

shop. she has become their cause. >> i can't even fathom what she's going through. >> reporter: at 15 payton was learning to drive and making a run at modeling. she started feeling severe back and abdominal pain. the explanation? >> cysts. abnormally big. >> reporter: but payton got worse. >> my stomach started expanding to the point i looked like i was five months pregnant. >> reporter: on her birthday payton learned she had four ovarian cancer. it was in her lungs and all through her abdomen. >> i was in disbelief. i didn't think it was -- that can't be right. >> this is all cancer. that's actual tumors. >> reporter: oncologist calls payton a medical mystery. >> she may arguably be the youngest or certainly one of the youngest patients in the united states diagnosed with this disease. >> reporter: at university of

and a seven hour surgery to remove the tumors. >> almost completely gone. >> reporter: payton has more chemo ahead but she stays positive. >> i'm strong enough to not be beat down by sorrow. >> reporter: rhonda swanson will be donating 10% of october sales to the teen she calls amazing. >> i love this piece. >> reporter: payton's new supporters dress her in their warm sweaters. and they keep her in their heartfelt prayers. many people are praying for payton including her namesake payton manning. because of uc health partnership with the broncos and manning, the former quarterback called her and told her his entire family is praying for her. >> she is amazing. just amazing. thanks, kathy. time to check in with meteorologist lauren whitney and find out when we're going to warm up again. >> warmer temperatures on the horizon but still pretty socked in in denver. our view from our city camera at lookout mountain. it's pretty foggy up there and there's some elk starting to get snack, a little predinner

a look at our satellite and radar, a lot of cloud cover across the front range. eastern plains easy enough, high country and up to our west it is pretty clear out there. much different ball game and you'll notice if you haven't been outside it is significantly colder across the front range. cold front not on our temperatures. 23 degrees cooler in denver than we were 24 hours ago. 30 degrees different in colorado springs. 25 akron and burlington, 29 degrees cooler in la junta and pueblo. up a little bit in the last hour. pretty cool earlier. 41 earlier today. 45 in boulder, 43 in fort collins. 51 towards burlington, mountains actually much warmer does not happen very often but it does sometimes. 60s -- 66 in avon, 65 in craig and meeker, 74 in grand junction. temperatures, 48 at dia, 46 downtown, winds are mild, pretty windy yesterday but right now out of the northeast at three miles an hour.

at dia, that was 2:59 p.m. 50 degrees in denver, that was our high in the downtown area. that happened early this morning. taking a look at our futurecast, and tomorrow, our cold front now long gone. we're going to have high pressure build back into the southwest. that's going to raise our temperatures quite a bit as we head towards tomorrow. again if it's too cold for you and you want to be one, you'll get your way starting tomorrow. futurecast, overnight tonight we will have some cloud cover that sticks around with us. it may take a while for this to ease up just a bit more and then tomorrow morning could be a few clouds out there. maybe some fog in place in some areas but the western slope and to the northwestern corner, clear and dry and tomorrow clouds start to ease up a bit as the high pressure builds back in and then temperatures back in the 70s with a little sunshine. 39 in denver, 35 greeley, 38 in wray and burlington, 3019

tomorrow, this is where we warm back up. 75 degrees in denver, greeley 69 out in burlington, mountains a lot of 60s with a really nice day, 60 degrees in fiscal. 64 in eagle and 76 in grand junction. five-day forecast we get even warmer after this, 83 on friday. it's going to feel a lot like spring late summer around here. saturday, sunday, monday, mid- 70s with sunshine. submit to long-range models because it could tuesday that we watch our next system to come on through but we will get cooler temperatures next week. >> 83 for mid-october? no complaints there. thanks. arose police and fire department helped transform the children's hospital into a pumpkin patch. officers and firefighters unloaded hundreds of pumpkins onto the hospitals front lawn. kids had a blast. they all got to choose their own pumpkin. this is the tenth year they have done this. may farms in byers donated all
