office yesterday. what happened there this morning? >> reporter: deputies reopened the boulder county sheriff's office just before 11:00 this morning after clearing the scene. fbi agents had this place shut down for a while this morning while searching that tan ford explorer you see in connection with the improvised explosive device that was found in a backpack tuesday in front of the nederland police department. taking a look at this video here that we just scene tape after finding nothing suspicious inside the suv. an fbi spokesperson says agents searched the vehicle out of an abundance of caution. when the suv's owner came forward with information. late tuesday night a sergeant coming into work saw the backpack and brought it into the station, thinking it was left there on accident. a bomb squad discovered it was

early wednesday morning. now fbi agents are conducting interviews, examining the device and working this case around the clock they say to try to determine who left it there. >> oh, it's a big deal because it's so scary. this is the center of town. it will be like fireworks. we waited and we waited and we waited. finally all we heard was a big bang. >> reporter: fbi spokesperson says there is no threat to the public right now, but they have put toge they're asking anyone who might have any information about this case to come forward. live in boulder county, melissa garcia, cbs4 news. homicide detectives are working on a deadly shooting in the 400 block of south galena last night. the identity of the man isn't out yet. campaign 2016 news today,

she joins us live from the testing division. >> reporter: it's a step required by state law, to make sure all the electronics are recording and counting votes properly. that wouldn't be fair if it was just the election officials doing the testing. so the democratic and republican parties selected one person each to oversee the system. they were the ones filling out the test ballots. it's a pretty long process. each had to fill out hand tally. they also test the tab let devices again, voting 25 times each. this entire process takes about three hours. i think they're still inside now. testing of the ballots, that's straightforward. another concern for officials here that they're dealing with, not just in denver, but all over is cyber security. experts say registration voter

>> all our devices and scanning equipment is on an air gaped nonnetwork system. it's not attached to the internet in any way, so there's no vulnerability in terms of getting inside this system outside of the office itself. >> reporter: this is the first presidential election where ballots are mailed outto all active voters. in colorado there are more than 3 million. if you mail yours in, put it in the mail no about 68 cents. you can vote early and in person by october 24th. the polls officially open november 8th, 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. you can register to vote on the 8th during those times as well. right behind me we have a 24- hour drop box. those will open october 17th all over the state. you have to find your polling place, drop your ballot off at any drop box.

october 17th. jamie leary, cbs4 news. >> great info, thanks a lot. you can find a link to the secretary of state's office for those deadlines, as well as all of the details about donald trump's campaign stop in grand junction next week in the campaign 2016 section at cbsdenver.com. plenty of sunshine in colorado today, as we rebound from yesterday's cool day. we are back. meteorologist ashton altieri is in colorado's weather center right now. just how up, i'm curious? >> we'll be close to a record by tomorrow. for today we'll be about 25 degrees warmer than we were yesterday. wow, it's just such a nice sight to see the sun back after that rather gloomy and damp day we experienced yesterday. it was the coldest day we've had so far this season. now we're up to 72 at dia. same thing in boulder. greeley at 59 now. still warming up at a pretty good clip. 40s, 50s and 60s in the colorado high country.

clearing here as we progress through the afternoon. we're going to see a high in the mid- to upper 70s today. then by 7:00, 65. sun goes down around 6:30 this evening as the days continue to get shorter. coming up, we'll talk about that near record for tomorrow and of course your weekend outlook. it's all straight ahead. >> cool stuff. thanks a lot. now things are getting better in north carolina, but there are still flooding concerns in the aftermath of hurricane mahe with record crests forecasted for the weekend. many roads across the state are still closed there and are going be closed even after the water recedes for safety assessments. 30 red cross volunteers from colorado and montana are helping out with that flood relief. hurricane nicole is pummeling bermuda. flooding homes, snapping trees, it hit as a category 3 storm

nicole knocked out power to more than 20,000 customers. bermuda has built much of its infrastructure to withstand these dangerous hurricanes. won't be as bad there as it was in haiti. iran says it will deploy war ships off yemen, after the american military sent three cruise missiles off the coast at those rebel held sites. they were in response to two incidents this week in which an american navy war ship under fire. david martin reports. >> reporter: american war ship launched the tomahawk cruise missiles in western yemen before dawn. the white house approved the so- called self-defense strikes. the pentagon said the strikes were conducted to protect our personnel, our ships and our freedom of navigation.

on sunday and again wednesday, while sailing in international waters between yemen and east africa. state department spokesman john kirby. >> we're going to continue to urge all parties and we're going to do this by and through the u.n. special envoy to stop the violence. >> reporter: this marks the first u.s. military action targeting the rebels who are trying to over throw the government of yemen. the real measure of success will be whether it puts an end to attacks on ships. david martin, cbs news, the pentagon. denver broncos preparing to take on the chargers with an interim coach tonight. the advice he's received.

the denver broncos are in san diego ready to take on the san diego chargers. but head coach gary kubiak is here at home as you know recovering from that complex migraine that sent him to the hospital. it's expected trevor siemian will be the starting quarterback tonight.

they'll top off around 70 and cool off two or 3 degrees by game time this evening and no threat for rain. beautiful weather in southern california. we'll look at that detailed forecast in just a moment. first we want to take a live look outside over downtown denver. it's so much nicer around here today compared to yesterday. each thursday the drought monitor is updated and with a little bit of rain over the past week, and of course mountain snow, i wanted to show you the drought situation actually hasn't changed at all. gotten better. about 25% of colorado under some stage of drought. for those you of us in the denver area and to fort collins, we have moderate drought in place. we want to start seeing the drought situation get better. but yesterday we had some rain, but only .01 inches of rain. today about 75. 25-degree warm up from yesterday.

we'll be close. we have 83 in the forecast. then saturday at least 77. sunday we'll be near 80. here's the 24 hour temperature change. we're 27 degrees warmer now in englewood than at this time yesterday. 34 degrees warmer now in boulder, where it's 72 currently. 71 at denver city park. and 68 on the south side of town in castle rock. looking around the state, burlington still at 61. we'll see 70s on the eastern plains this afternoon. 50s and 60s in the colorado doppler 4000 still showing a few clouds around. again, nothing like yesterday. what we have left will clear out. here's futurecast. i'm going to fast forward this through saturday morning. notice a couple of showers possibly impacting the northwest part of the state. this system will stay far enough north that denver and the front range will stay dry
