at a colfax motel. now the search is on for the person who pulled the trigger. i'm tom mustin. >> i'm kathy walsh. thank you for joining us. cbs4's andrea flores is live at denver police headquarters. i understand we've just learned police to have a suspect in the case? >> reporter: that's right, kathy. denver police have issued a warrant for the man they believe shot and killed the expectant mother. 23-year-old quinasia russell's family hopes the forward. >> i peeked in the window. i seen my knees laying on her back. >> reporter: friends and family surrender the airway motel off east colfax after learning 23- year-old mother to be quinasia russell was shot and killed early saturday morning. >> it's kind of surreal. unbelievable. >> reporter: just before 3:00 police say officers in the area heard gunshots coming from the hotel.

pronounced at the scene. >> reporter: police have identified this man brent kelly as the person responsible for russell's murder. as police worked to figure out a motive family members hoped senseless violence in their neighborhood comes to an end. >> we need to do better. we need to do better as a community. >> reporter: and that the killer comes forward. >> turn yourself in. death is going to chase you down too. you not going to get away with it. >> we don't want anyone else to get hurt. >> reporter: investigators are talking to people in the area trying to get a hold of surveillance video and also trying to look for any witnesses who may have seen what happened. if you have any information, dpd asks you give them a call. you could be eligible for a $2000 reward. live in denver, andrea flores, cbs4 news. two people including an off- duty police officer are recovering after a five car crash in aurora.

a bmw did not see traffic slowing down in front of him. that person rear-ended a truck and led to a chain reaction crash. injuries are minor but the driver will be charged with following too closely. tomorrow the long-awaited return of one of denver's iconic eateries. rosenbergs bagel shop has been closed since may when a murder and arson happened in an apartment above the shop. now the long rebuilding process is five points. employees say they are happy to be back at work. >> reporter: not just employees but also customers who really enjoy this new york style shop. know the signs say grand reopening sunday right at 6:00 a.m. that means there's going to be a pretty long line headed outside the store in just a few hours. >> sundays were the busiest day. and i'm very grateful to say that we had just so much

mounting. >> reporter: all the final prep was done inside rosenbergs bagels. private events over the past two days have the staff ready for the grand reopening on sunday. >> i felt so good, to have energy in this place. >> reporter: the shop closed in may after a fire damaged much of the kitchen. the fire is from a homicide scene in an apartment upstairs. investigators believe the suspect started it to cover up the murder. since then the bagel shop has denver. >> we said we're going to pop up as much as we can, see customer-facing and relevant. we're also going to go to the neighborhood and say thank you for supporting us. it's our turn to get back to you. >> reporter: now the shop is ready to serve customers again. >> what we wanted you to feel coming back was familiarity. the design is very much the same. >> reporter: they are calling

and that is certainly not we were going to allow to happen. rising from the ashes, you'll see the phoenix part of the barrel when you come to the store now. it's on the back of our t- shirts as well. >> reporter: there's more good news to come from this, the closure meant the owner and his business partners could spend some time concentrating on growing this business so denver will see a second location not to mention this five points neighborhood is going to see bunch more new york style things like maybe some pizza at some nearby establishments. we're live in denver tonight, jeff todd, cbs4 news. the latest on a grass fire that came dangerously close to homes in aurora yesterday afternoon. investigators have confirmed the fire was started accidentally by someone burning weeds and trash in the backyard. that person was not face charges we're told. about 30 acres burned in the whispering pines neighborhood east of e-470. smoke from a wildfire made

area. so fire -- that fire has burned more than 60 acres and is threatening one structure. people at a campground have evacuated voluntarily. no injuries reported. authorities are asking everyone not to call 911. is it really october? we have record-breaking temperatures in colorado today. meteorologist chris spears is in colorado is whether center. >> we have those record- breaking temperatures several cities today hitting records including pueblo, springs, denver, and alamosa. border to border we had quite a bit of heat in our state today. watching something, take a look at doppler 4000, pretty big storm system, if you have friends or family from seattle and portland through san francisco, give them a call. they'll tell you it is stormy out tonight. and very windy. compliments of a powerful jet stream coming off the pacific ocean, diving into the western

across colorado. in the days ahead. one thing we are very worried about will be different waves of this weather system, the first wave more record or near record heat tomorrow, and a lot of wind. that is going to create a prolonged period of very high fire danger tomorrow into monday. but then a temperature drop and yes the potential for some mountain snow and tom and kathy maybe, maybe a mix in the metro area we'll breakdowe little bit. bottom line get ready for a very topsy-turvy forecast. >> we need that moisture. three structures are now a total loss because of an early morning fire in gypsum. it happened in a remote area near trail gulch. eagle county sheriff's office says the only part of a large cabin is this stairwell. a mobile home and shed were gutted by the flames. no one injured. investigators are trying to figure out what sparked it.

this week in mesa county. the coroner has identified the remains as 74-year-old roger vehicle. reported missing in 2013 from the town of loma west of grand junction. investigators say they are working to find out how he died. new information on firearms ending up in the hands of children in colorado. a new study shows a child was involved in accidental shootings at least eight times over the past two and a half years in our state. researchers looked at more than 1000 shootings overall. their number far exceeds the numbers statistics. children in stapleton spent their morning helping other kids in need. paper with food and other treats for families in need. the event is hosted by local nonprofit group the kids compassion project. >> if we donate healthy food to kids in need, maybe it will help them, it will help them with stuff. >> they go to high schools and

campaigning for her in colorado. sanders will start in denver tomorrow and then visit fort collins on monday. donald trump will be in colorado springs and grand junction on tuesday. new video shows an explosion at a florida carwash sparks accidentally by a careless driver. it was all caught on surveillance footage. a woman tried to vacuum up gasoline in the trunk of her car, the heat ignited the fumes and that triggered an explosion that destroyed the vacuum machine. >> it burned everything up. >> thank god nobody was over there. what could have happened? i don't want to talk about it. >> the woman simply drove away after the blast. >> people in the pacific northwest are on storm watch tonight. the remnants of a powerful pacific typhoon better the coast. in portland, oregon heavy rain is flooding city streets. seattle washington has now had more rain in the past two days than it's gotten in the last

town. >> it looked like the wizard of oz. that's what it looked like. things were just moving like this. and then you can see the trees just snapping like twigs. >> severe weather in that area is expected to continue through the night. meteorologist chris spears, the system could affect us here in colorado as well? >> we'll start feeling the wind in front of this storm system tomorrow. hold onto your hats. pretty windy around here. 85 today at the airport. that's a new record for the date. normal is 66. started at 54, normal 37. well above where we should be. hanging in the upper 50s right now with the west southwest wind, humidity low 36% with a steady barometer. we will be checking temperatures mostly 50s and 60s in the eastern plains. look at la junta 74 degrees. 40s and 50s in the higher elevations and 40s to mid-50s on the western slope, 65 in grand valley.

arvada, 54 also from leslie burns in west greeley. here we go, we have a little bit of wind out there tonight, on the western slope, in pockets not widespread but that will change tomorrow. very powerful jet stream we've been talking about continues to pour. into the western united states some of that energy passing right over colorado. we are not anticipating any precipitation over the next 24 hours which is unfortunate. we really, really could use a good for the next 24 to 36 hours and lots of wind because of this high wind watch now in effect for all of our front range mountains, and along the continental divide. gusts could be heard in force at times. along with wind and dry conditions, fire danger red flag warnings, all of the front range mountains and foothills including west of denver. the city not included in this but let's pretend we are

fires to go over the next 24 hours with the wind coming. sticks around into monday, whether service has a high wind watch or fire weather watch for the entire eastern part of the state for monday morning and monday afternoon. so a very windy 48 hours on the way. lows tonight on the mild side for this time of year 40s and 50s just about statewide. a few of those higher mountain valleys will dip into the 30s tonight. tomorrow in the 80s 25, a few places near 90, 60s of high, 60s and 70s on the western slope. five-day forecast, topsy-turvy one from your record heat tomorrow all the way down to just 49 by wednesday. with a chance for rain snow mix. tom and kathy let's focus on the temperatures here, not confident in the precipitation, just a chance but i want it to be on your radar and then after that, we go into next weekend right this moment looks like we
