this is the news on monday, october 17. >> i am alan gionet. here is what is happening here on the cbs4 warning news. shawn? >> reporter: both campaigns, through our state before the last presidential debate. we will have a preview coming up. the battle to regain control of the iraqi city of muscle is here this morning. republican party office is firebombed. coming up the differences in reaction from the presidential candidates in the final push to get your vote begins today with some candidates in colorado. this comes as ballots are being sent out to voters across the state starting today. cbs4's shawn chitnis has a preview of a busy week for the campaign . shawn? >> reporter: that is right as county clerks are getting ready

colorado beginning today. this all happens as both campaigns have some of their top surrogates in town to get supports and rally support for them across the state. let us first talk about bernie sanders. he was joined by senator elizabeth warren as they campaigned on behalf of hillary clinton last night. sanders will be at an event around 3:30 at colorado state university in fort collins appearing at cu boulder behalf of hillary clinton yesterday and they were urging young voters to get out the vote this presidential election. the son of the gop nominee donald trump, jr. returns to colorado today. last week he was in north carolina and donald trump, jr. will meet with supporters and volunteers at 11:00 this morning at the centennial gun club this afternoon at 4:30.

trump junior will be at the sink in boulder.'s father will arrive speaking in colorado springs as well as grand junction. now we have three weeks until the election and they will be in town only to build up the anticipation as we get ready for the final potential debate set for wednesday. shawn chitnis, cbs4 when news. >> it is right around the corner. shawn, thank you. the campaigns continue to wage a war of words just after a gop office in north carolina is firebombed. here is reid bennion with the latest. >> it is meant to scare and intimidate people from volunteering. >> reporter: a north carolina republican party official reacting to the firebombing over the weekend. a swastika said leave town or else on the building. the state gop tweeted his

campaign tweeted a note of sympathy. but trump claim them for the attack. >> the election is being rigged by corrupt media pushing completely false allegations. >> reporter: trump supporters including rudy giuliani arlie trump is not talking about the actual voting process. >> when he talks about a be election, he is not talking about the polls. allowing for the possibility of the rigging of the election. >> they be dead people on the road, and then they pay people. >> reporter: trump himself specified on twitter the election is being rigged at polling places. mike pence added a measure of coldness on sunday.

front passing by winds up to 40 miles-per-hour this afternoon. lots of whether to talk about with your full five day forecast coming up. right now let's get a check on the traffic. here is joe. >> here is a look at what is going on on cdot 25 at parker road so speeds will increase but right now you are seeing speeds at about the 50s and 60s in some spots taking a three minutes to southbound from r no major accidents or stalls just slowdowns northbound at highway 36. breaking overnight the battle to retake the second largest city of mosul is underway. the u.s. military provided air and ground support to go after isis forces. ashton carter that the campaign is a decisive moment to defeat the islamic state. our hena daniels has the very latest on the operation.

rocky forces -- iraqui forces moved in on mosul. along the front lines artillery fire explosions from above and plumes of smoke on the ground. thousands of iraqui troops faced the toughest battle since the withdrawal of u.s. military forces five years ago. mosul has been under the control of militants 2014. isis fighters have reduced much of it to rubble pick >> we have destroyed it very deliberately knocked down everything possible. >> reporter: u.s. military commander in charge said overnight the operation they prove to be a long and tough battle with the iraqis preparing and we will stand by them. hena daniels, cbs news. >> the united nations is running 1 million people in

the city. humanitarian groups have set up emergency camps nearby. an update on the crossfire that closed northbound i-25 last night. the highway is back open this morning. the fire closed the highway if the greenland exit at around 10:00 last night. there are no expected delays this morning. boulder county is under a burning of any search. the dry conditions we have right now forced a popular event to be canceled. thousands of people signed up for the second night of the festival last night. people living near the site say the flames are spreading beyond the lanterns into euros. andrea floris tells us why some neighbors are opposed to this

stocks are up this morning and cuban cigars will be flowing back into the u.s. here is kenneth craig with today's money watch. >> americans who travel to cuba cannot bring home 100 cigars and several bottles of rum. the obama administration has lifted the limit which could generate hundreds of millions of dollars for cubans. the rum and secure is brought ck and cannot be sold. stocks closed on friday in the positive territory and the nasdaq finishing up a fraction. hershey will soon be searching for a new boss. they announced its current ceo will retire next year. the special committee will be in charge of that search process and young americans are not saving for retirement.

a bear is now being remembered after a controversial hunt in new jersey likely killed him. he was known to many in the suburbs walked upright. why life workers say it was because he suffered injuries to his paws and spent little time on all four legs. no animal rights activists are upset by the hunt last week. >> it was an innocent bear minding his own business never getting into trouble or harming anybody. and you have this idiot who trapped him to hunt him and

southbound 25. overall no major accidents to report on i-70 that here is a look at the drive southbound coming into town. here is the slow traffic northbound i-25 at highway 36. we have one accident in capitol hill at colfax. the loss of the 15-year-old daughter killed in a shooting morning in lexington, kentucky. trinity appears to have been an innocent bystander shot in the neck when men started shooting at each other. she later died at the hospital. trinity was a star athlete at her high school as well as an honor student. her coach said the loss hits hard. >> it just breaks my heart to even think about the idea. excuse me for being emotional.

>> hello, everybody. good to have you with us on this monday morning. this is the news on cbs4 with a lot going on this week. thanks for joining us. i am alan gionet. >> and i am britt moreno. >> let us get monday going and a check on the forecast. ashton is talking about a windy start to the week. >> definitely. we have a red flag warning in effect for today and an almost full moon outside this morning. if you look out anywhere throughout most of colorado you should be able to see the moon this morning. it is now about 97% full. we will see a lot of sunshine once the sun comes up 10 minutes after seven. checking in with mitch and sandy in northwest arvada reporting 44 degrees right now. there it is with red flag warning. windy conditions is the big story.
