we start cbs4 news at 6:00 with a weather alert. powerful winds are pushing a wildfire in southern colorado. we know at least one home is destroyed and there are evacuations. the junkins fire, now more than 11,000 acres and growing. that fire is burning near westcliffe, southwest of pueblo. people living along highways 165 and 96 have already been ua are being told they should prepare to evacuate. that beulah valley is still recovering from a recent wildfire. >> that fire destroyed eight homes. we do have team coverage for you tonight. meteorologist lauren whitney tracking the dry and windy conditions that are fueling these fires. we start though with matt live near the fire with the very latest. >> as the sun sets here over the valley, westcliffe and firefighters who have been busy all day trying to help with the

they say right now this fire is at about 11,500 acres. and more firefighters are on the way to help in the fight. >> we're in some of the worst conditions we've seen all year. really low humidities. we haven't had moisture in quite a while. >> reporter: this isn't a fire fight right now. it's an evacuation. crews focusing on getting people out. >> i'm going right over the house. smoke was choking. but we got it all loaded. we got the stuff loaded and got family, some of the first to encounter this wall of fire and smoke. they say their home they moved in to three months ago is probably not standing now. >> the first time i've ever seen a huge area on fire that close so that is not one thing i want to see again. >> reporter: firefighters responding from across the region. local resources stretched thin. >> we are protecting structures.

front of the fire and protect homes and that's the main priority at this point. >> reporter: wildfire once again covering southeastern colorado with smoke as people here pray for the winds to die down. >> a bit of good news if you can say that, tonight the fire kind of switched directions a little bit and the front of the fire is now kind of running in to a burn scar from a fire that happened about 5 years ago. so some of the trees have already been burned in growth of the fire down and give the firefighters who are responding some time to get some containment around the rest of the lines. definitely a large fire here in this part of the state once again. live near westcliffe. >> tough job. thanks very much. people driving through eagle county might notice smoke from what's being called the freeman fire. that one is at about 300 acres, containment at 15%. meteorologist lauren whitney

rooftop. we're seeing smoke from fires along the front range. >> we do have high fire danger ahead of this system that's combing through. the cold front is working its way through and ahead of that and even still now we have gusty winds around the state. let's take a look at our red flag warning. this is in place through 9:00 tonight. covers the front range, foothills, down south and in to the eastern plains, parts of kansas and down in to new mexico, oklahoma, andex front that's working its way in to the state. increased fire danger today. be extra careful because these winds are going to stick around throughout the rest of the night and possibly even through tomorrow in some areas. it's going to be windy for us and will be dry for most of the state as well. be extra, extra careful. you can see the wind kicking back up here downtown. watch out for these winds tonight. we'll send it back to the studio. high winds also spread flames at this townhome fire in

we've learned firefighters believe unattended charcoal grill started this one. three families will not be able to stay in their homes tonight because their units were badly damaged. no one was hurt. colorado is playing a rather increasingly large role in the presidential campaign. donald trump will be in colorado tomorrow. >> his son here today. and bernie sanders campaigning on behalf of hillary clinton. stan bush live where sanders is getting ready to speak. >> barack obama carried colorado in 2008 and 2012 in large part because he got a large part from the youth vote. hillary clinton's best surrogate on the campaign trail has, and senator sanders was here this afternoon speaking for about 15 minutes in front of about 2,000 people. felt very much like an early democratic primary showing here at the campus at cu.

appearance for amendment 69 as sanders makes his trip through the state. bernie sanders also stopped earlier in the day at csu. there he hit on familiar themes of campaign finance reform and equity inequality. he also took shots at his favorite target, donald trump for not paying taxes. >> our tax system is corrupt. it's grossly unfair. and yet in one day mr. trump did more to make my point than i did in a year thank you, donald trump. >> hillary clinton now comfortably in the lead in polls, in the last round of polling for colorado but this state still very much in play and very much apart of donald trump's strategy should he win the state, or that he'd need to win the state to get to the white house. as you mentioned earlier, trump campaigning in this state in both colorado springs and grand junction this week. we'll have more at 10:00.

news. donald trump, jr. also made a campaign stop in boulder today. was planning to stop by the sink restaurant on the hill but when the restaurant said it had not been notified the campaign decided to hit the pearl street mall instead. trump supporters and protesters both on hand. trump, jr. says he understands boulder is not exactly friendly to republicans. but he says his father will be president to all americans. and he had a lot to say about hillary clinton. >> it's the pay it's her criticizing evangelicals, catholics, latinos, african americans. as far as i'm concerned, based on these e-mails, everyone is in the basket of deplorables. the only people hillary clinton likes are people who write multimillion-dollar checks to her foundation. >> trump, jr. also met with supporters this morning. he said the race could come down to colorado. this was his third visit to the state. broncos head coach gary kubiak back at work after taking

>> michael spencer getting ready for xfinity monday live tonight. michael, coach is back at it. >> after a week away, he was back with the team today. he was at practice. he met with the media after practice and everything was like normal once again. kubiak says the main thing, health concern going forward is improving his sleep habits. he told us this incident wa suffered in 2013. gary said he's feeling good and should have no lingering effects moving forward. >> the doctors that are here in houston have gotten together and talked about things. doing some things. biggest thing for me is helping me sleep a little bit better. that's about all i can tell you. i'm sure you guys don't sleep real well neither. that's it. i met with him, spent quality time with him late last week.

new developmentess on a home made bomb found outside the nederland police department. ansberry is accused of making it. investigators say he tried to detonate it with cell phones.

crutches. ansberry stayed in a nearby hotel on two separate visits to nederland this month. >> jaws on the floor and i think all of us together exclaimed, you know, of all the people, i would not have suspected this one. >> ansberry was taken in to custody while getting off a plane at midway airport in chicago. while the fbi has their suspect, we still don't know a motive. happening now, d.i.a. they're replacing phones for passengers with those recalled galaxy note 7s. the u.s. department of transportation banned the phones from all flights. the phones can overheat. some have even exploded. cbs4's melissa garcia live at the airport for us tonight. people shouldn't even try to bring their recalled phones on a plane. >> officials say if you do try boarding with a note 7, you'll be turned away.

to switch out note 7s with the galaxy s7 or s7 edge. for some people those phones aren't what they hoped for. >> reporter: checking in for his flight out of d.i.a., we talked to frequent business traveler fred, a loyal samsung fan, who isn't a fan of the 7 edge they gave him to replace the note 7. >> it's got half the memory and half the power. >> reporter: he had waited to upgrade his old release of the note 7 in august. days after he bought it, reports started coming in of the phones going up in flames. >> definitely a concern now. definitely don't want to get one of those phones. >> reporter: samsung initially blamed the manufacturer of some of its batteries but replacement note 7s with new batteries blew up too. customers had to switch phones again. >> the $25 they gave us for our inconvenience certainly did pay for it and i think samsung needs to do a little better quality control. >> reporter: now he may think

next generation of note when it comes out next year. >> i'll wait and see how it goes. i won't be the first one to get one for sure. >> reporter: he isn't the only one. >> now that i've heard about this, i might consider switching to an iphone. >> a samsung spokesperson says the company urges note 7 owners to exchange their device or get a refund at their local carrier or retail store before coming to the airplane. but for last minute travel help, you can call an onsite at cbsdenver.com. d.i.a. spokesperson says they expect samsung to be doing those replacements here at d.i.a. for the next couple of days. we're live at denver international airport, melissa garcia, cbs4 news. time to check in with ed greene. we love the weather here in the metro area but those fire crews around the state really struggling. >> it's been so dry around here. now we have a jet streak

of rain and snow activity just to the north behind that frontal system. that is all beginning to die down but there is some moisture here that still could come through with another surge of cooler air. that's going to cool us off what we saw today. current wind speeds pretty gusty. greeley, 41 miles per hour. 36 in akron. nothing going on in lamar right now. a little bit of a gust up in the high country as well. around the metro area, still gusty winds, anywhere from 9 to 10 miles per hour, all the way up in to the lower 30-mile-per-hour range. as we warning over the eastern plains once again, this goes till 9:00. spreads back in to grand county. as we take a look at our hour by hour, couple snow showers, they all die down. then we'll go to clear to partly cloudy skies. clouds begin to move in from the north. this is tomorrow at 7:00. late showers is what we're expecting. and some of the showers could push through the metro area, maybe we'll see a few scattered showers. maybe over the northeast and that's about it. we'll roll it in to thursday morning. this is around 1:00 in the afternoon. you see sunshine returns.

eastern plains. 30s and 40s out west. then for tomorrow, cooler weather. 50s and 60s for the eastern plains. some low 70s southeast. 50s and 60s for the mountains and out west temperatures in the 50s, 60s, to around that 70-degree mark. here is your denver forecast. for tonight, look for partly cloudy skies, winds decreasing, 41 and 39 the overnight lows. then for tomorrow increasing clouds late with some scattered showers. 64 and 63 and then for the next several days we start to see 57 degrees. partly cloudy skies. we'll start to warm it up as we head for the weekend. lots of sunshine. mid 70s by saturday. time to talk about our denver broncos. there's michael spencer getting set for xfinity monday live at the viewhouse. with the coach back, players know they've got a lot of work to do. >> yeah, jim, that's exactly right. it's always tough coming back after a long weekend. the broncos back at practice this afternoon. we'll tell you what they're saying about what they need to

the denver broncos back at work today. the team took the weekend off and had a light practice this afternoon as they get set for monday night's game against the texans. one of the big issues for this team, especially forhis defense, has been slow starts. opposing teams have scored touchdowns on their opening drives in four of the six games this season. it was of course an issue in san diego and it's really a problem that the broncos don't have an answer for just yet. >> just got to come out with a different we usually come out and usually just do what we do but now teams are kind of on to us a little bit. so we've got to change up a little bit. i think we're going to change it up a little bit and have better plans inside the game. >> got to come out ready.??!uc i think that starts in week preparation and different things like that. we've got to come out strong. i remember last year we did a heck of a job, all the first drives. so we've got to replicate that success or try to. >> one week from tonight means

this is the news across america tonight. police say curtis allen, gavin wright were going to detonate four car bombs outside an apartment building where many immigrants live. according to court documents stein said the only good muslim is a dead muslim. the suspects stockpiled firearms, ammunition and explosives, even brought a manifesto to be published after the bombing. witnesses rush to help in after an suv runs off the road and bursts in to flame. this was y florida. the driver was trapped inside. a half done people formed a human chain to help pull him to safety. you can see the flames in the background. that driver went to the hospital to be checked out for only minor injuries. great job. energy and consumer stocks struggled today. that was a drag on the markets. dow dropped 51 points. nasdaq off 14. s&p 500 was down 6. you'll not find any clown costumes at target. they're coming off store shelves. >> now a popular halloween event
