deplorables. first at 10:00, the man arrested for allegedly planting a bomb outside the nederland police station. tonight we've learned david ansberry has ties to a radical hippy group that tormented people in boulder 40 years ago. lauren dispirito has been looking in to his past and how police tracked him down. that part of the story took you to that king soopers. >> he was spotted surveillance video, one of two locations where investigators say he bought cell phones used in making the bomb and at 3 feet 6 inches tall, using crutches to get around, they say he was easily recognized in the video. >> reporter: cell phone purchases helped investigators track down the man they say planted a bomb outside the nederland police department. >> he was very quiet. did not ask very many questions about anything that was going on. had a consistent smile on his

boulder creek lodge across the street from the shopping center where the device was found. employees who asked we keep their identities hidden say as police evacuated the area, they helped ansberry check out, not knowing he'd turn out to be the suspected bomb maker. >> he was very adamant about one of his bags not being touched and the other one i was allowed to take up to the cab with me. >> reporter: a phone connected to the bomb failed to trigger it. hours the device. >> justice happens. there's a lot of kids over there. we have our children over there every single day. >> reporter: sources tell cbs4 ansberry has been linked to a radical counterculture group known as the spt, once based near boulder, and say he may have been trying to avenge something that happened more than 40 years ago. according to the new york times a nederland marshal confessed years later to having killed a

ansberry to chicago where he was arrested on saturday, coming off a plane at midway airport. if convicted of the charges he faces he could spend up to 20 years in federal prison. live in denver, lauren dispirito, cbs4 news. here's the latest now on a wildfire that's burning in southern colorado. the junkins fire has burned more than 15,000 acres, burning near westcliffe, 50 miles west of pueb more crews will join in the fire fight tomorrow. >> they're coming from across the region to attack these flames. this is the western flank of the fire. this is as close as we can get the evacuation zones surround the entire area and in the distance you can see the glow from the flames. there's still a lot of fire activity going on. >> it just keeps getting worse. >> reporter: evacuees grabbing what they can and getting out.

conditions we've seen all year. >> reporter: firefighters responding from across the region, local resources stretched thin. >> we got out just in time. we could see the glow and the fire coming over the hill. ran for what we could, put it in the truck and headed out. >> reporter: jason and his family some of the first to encounter this wall of fire and smoke. they say their home they moved in to three months ago is probably not house up there, bought a house six months ago and moved in three months ago. hopefully we still have a house when we get there. >> first time i've ever seen a huge area on fire that close. that is not one thing i want to see again. >> we are protecting structures. life safety is number one, trying to get folks out from in front of the fire and protect homes and that's the main priority at this point. >> reporter: wildfire once again covering southeastern colorado with smoke as people

down. a big fight on their hands tomorrow but they'll have help from the air. several air tankers including national guard helicopters being dispatched to this fire to foick from above. they say winds will again play a major role in fire growth tomorrow. we were just able to confirm one home and five outbuildings have been so far destroyed in this fire. reporting live near westcliffe, here on the front range. there's an air quality health advisory for parts of southern colorado near the fire. ed greene joins us from the colorado weather center tonight. ed, you do have good news about our fi danger. >> it's in the form of a cold front that came on through today. it's going to dry our temperatures down in to the 60s, maybe even the 50s, and maybe some moisture. let's take a look at our doppler 4000. there's still mountain flurries

high today well above the normal by 12 degrees. 77 today. colorado springs, here come the winds. 61 miles per hour. fort morgan, 62. 66 in greeley. 78 at berthoud pass and dillon, 80-mile-per-hour gusts. you felt those winds if you were out there today. then the cold front came through. tomorrow we could see late scattered showers. you'll see that on the hour by hour coming up. as far as the winds go, they too have died down. in the 20s in boulder, greeley, akron. otherwise we're in digits over the state and metro area. that's the good news. the winds have died down. and yes, we're going to be cooler. that will help the fires, maybe even a few showers. we'll talk about that on the hour by hour forecast, see when they might arrive. we're learning more details about the fire that destroyed three townhomes in aurora today. this was breaking news at 5:00. now we've learned how that fire started. kelly werthmann live on zeno way. you talked to the man who thinks

>> this is still under investigation, but what we do know is that it's charcoal briquettes like this, like what many people use to start their barbecues, this is likely what started the massive destructive fire. >> reporter: cell phone video captures the intense flames bursting from an aurora townhome. and fire investigators believe it all started in kenneth cherry's backyard. >> i don't know what happened until the investigation g >> reporter: cherry made sure to apologize to each of his neighbors like javier astrauda who was at school when he got a call his home was on fire. >> first thing that popped up was his dogs. >> reporter: luckily his three dogs were saved including this 2-month-old puppy. >> started shaking a lot. >> reporter: after firefighters got the flames under control, investigators quickly determined unattended charcoal briquettes caused the fire. >> had taken the briquettes after they'd used their smoker

plastic bag, then put them in the plastic trash can. >> reporter: fire officials say a back deck caught fire first, but due to gusting winds, the flames quickly spread to other homes. >> the four units, the first one i think has minimum damage. the other three look like they're heavily, heavily damaged. >> reporter: as tearful neighbors gathered what belongings they could save, cherry did what he could to help. >> i feel bad for the families because we all look out for each other. >> to give you an ide hot this fire got, we're about 30 feet or so from those homes and you can see this plastic fence that is warped much like a melted plastic spoon and we just saw a couple of aurora firefighters who are still here late tonight to make sure there are no flare-ups in the burned homes. live in aurora, kelly werthmann, cbs4 news. with just about three weeks from voting, hillary clinton's lead over donald trump widened.
