who is in the state today. crews in southern colorado are battling a very big fast moving wildfire. people are evacuated as thousands of acres have already burned. we have a change in the weather. it's 35 degrees out there now in denver. let's get a look at the forecast. >> a little chilly outside, and ashton is here to talk about the rain that could come our way as well. >> we really need the rain, espely we were just talking about the fire down there, and unfortunately southern colorado, the one region of our state where the rain chance is almost zero. we have a small chance for seeing rain in denver tonight. checking in with our cbs4 weather watchers, they're up early this morning, richard southwest of littleton reporting 40 degrees. the wind has calmed down considerably since yesterday. and temperatures are chilly. 30s and 40s around town. more on your weather coming up. let's get a check on traffic with joel.

construction, c-470 and santa fe, looks like that's been moved out of the way. we could have ramp restrictions again in place tonight. joel, thank you. with 20 days to go to election day candidates are hitting the campaign trail hard and colorado is a very important stop. cbs4's shawn chitness is live at the capital with a look at who is in our state today. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we are just one day away from the final presidential debate and yet we are seeing both is an important player in trying to put together that strategy to win the white house. here's a look at what's happening today. later today we're going to see the gop nominee, trump, make two stops across colorado. he's going to start the day in colorado springs, and then make his way over to the western slope speaking in grand junction later in the afternoon. this comes just a day after his son, donald, jr., made two

the nominee has been frequently visiting colorado, especially as we get closer to election day. but the latest numbers show hillary clinton with a solid lead over trump. 47% to 41% among voters polled here in colorado. clinton is not campaigning as she prepares for that final debate. last night senator bernie sanders spent a second day in colorado. he was at cu boulder trying to get young voters excited about supporting clinton. again, we have that final debate tomorrow, both candidates in nevada as they prepare for that final matchup. of course, millions of ballots are being sent out by mail in colorado as folk get ready to vote. shawn chitness, cbs4 morning. it's an important morning in court for one of two girls accused of plotting to kill students and staff at mount vista high school. jamie leary is live at the

what's going on now, jamie? >> reporter: this case has had a few delays over the course of the last 10 months, but this morning we can finally learn when a date will be set for a crucial hearing for one of the two teens accused in this case. the district attorney's office says this morning a judge will likely set the date for a reverse transfer hearing. this is the hearing that brooke higgins' attorneys have been waiting for. this is their shot at getting her case turned back to juvenile court where the punishment is far less severe. higgins and johnson were 16 years old when they were arrested last december. court documents allege they ploted to kill students and staff at mountain vista high school. higgins' attorneys were -- higgins apparently was going as far writing in a diary saying she wished she could have taken

her attorneys say this is a thought crime at best. they say both girls have been waiting in custody too long. they have both been in custody since their arrest in december. higgins and johnson are being charged as adults with attempt to commit first degree murder and attempt to commit first degree murder after deliberation. higgins is expected to appear here at 9:30 this morning for that hearing. jamie leary, cbs4 morning news. thank you for the update that. weather and traffic now. here is ashton. what's going on? >> it is definitely cooler than it was yesterday at this time, at least for most neighborhoods. thornton area you may be warmer than yesterday. lower 40s there. highlands ranch is at 43. foothills locations 30s, 37 in evergreen. clear skies overhead. once the sun comes up at about a quarter after 7:00 we'll see sunshine. as the day goes on, clouds will be on the increase.

morning. increasing clouds today, and definitely cooler. the cooling trend continues. yesterday we were in the 70s after 80s last weekend. today, highs will be in the 60s, about 65 for our daytime high. chance for rain tonight. some snow in the mountains. we'll talk about it coming up. let's get a check on the traffic with joel. southbound along i-25 past 144th some cones. then it opens nice and wide at 104th down into town. speeds into to u.s. 36. ten minutes from thornton to denver. great speeds westbound along u.s -- i-76 and i-270 in that eastbound direction as well. across the denver metro area, the earlier closures we had, santa fe and c-470 have been picked up and moved out of the way. we still have on going road work c-470 and 285. here's a look at the drive times from the east. both directions along i-70 from i-25 to 225 speeds in the upper

bad stuff. >> you feel the host, billy bush, was sort of egging him on? >> yes. yes. >> reporter: i'm andy rose reporting. switching gears, fema is now stepping into offer assistance as a fast growing wildfire in southern colorado is now burning more than 21 square miles. the fire has forced evacuations of more than 150 homes. it has even led to a health advisory for people living in parts of custer and pueblo co structures are lost in the area of junkins park loop where officials believe the fire began. samsung is looking to help its phone users at denver's airport. why it's not the phone assistance some want. no clown costumes allowed. we'll tell you where there is

quarter after 7:00. we'll start the day with sunny skies and as the day goes on, clouds will be on the increase. it's colder this morning in the mountains than yesterday. when i say colder, it's like 20 to 30 degrees colder in the colorado high country compared to this time yesterday. we're similar to yesterday morning in the denver area. i don't think you'll notice a big change. 35 at dia. 41 in boulder. we will stay safely above freezing this morning here along the front range. that will change later this week. we do anticipate a freeze thursday morning of this week. of course, it is that time of year. although lately you start to wonder with these warm afternoons that we've had. today will be cooler in the afternoon. highs will be in the 60s for the front range. 60s for the eastern plains. warmest temperatures out west, grand junction at 70 degrees today. doppler 4000 showing clouds in the northwest corner of the state. a few rain and snow showers between craig and meeker this morning. nothing major, but perhaps a

upper level weather disturbance in northern california. this low will race to the east over the next 24 hours, and as it does, it's going to bring at least the chance for seeing some rain and snow to our state, mainly tonight. a few snow showers in the more than mountains today -- northern mountains today. won't amount to much. maybe a little precipitation there as rabbit ears pass. some rain possible along the front range tonight. especially from fort collins to rain will be tonight. the farther south you are, less likely you'll see any rain. in the mountains along and north of i-70, 2 to 6 inches of snow for the mountains coming up tonight. i don't think mountain towns will see that much. but the passes like berthoud pass, approaches to the tunnel could see 2 to 6 inches. today 65 in denver. tomorrow 58. 60s thursday. and then, joel, here we go again, another beautiful weekend on the way. sunny skies with highs in the

our cars are winter driving ready as we've seen tough drives along i-70. southbound coming into town, not tough at all. lots of space between the cars, leading to great speeds, into the 60s and 50s. 9minutes from thornton to denver. nice wide open drive along i- 76, 270, and westbound along u.s. 36. cross the denver metro area, ongoing construction projects, the earlier work at santa fe and 28 moved out of the way. along i-70 both directions from i-25 to i-225 speeds in the up ir50s. there will be some places clown costumes won't be allowed this year. the denver zoo is one of those places. no clown costumes committed at the annual boo at the zoo event this weekend in adults. our tom mustin explains why. >> reporter: the best few months clowns real and imagined

country, including here in colorado. now the denver zoo is banning clown costumes from its annual boo at the zoo halloween event. >> i think a lot of it is people are hyper vigilant to it. >> reporter: there have been no threatagainst the zoo, but the current clown climate caused the ban. >> there are enough people concerned that we needed to ban it. >> reporter: some clown stores and are banned from some schools. >> not all clowns are evil. i understand the concern, but to ban all clown costumes is over the top. >> reporter: tyler said most of the clown calamity has been a hoax. >> i feel like most of it is overkill. i don't know, i feel like it could be smart to be safe this one time around, especially because it's been so prominent

spending in retirement is the coverage you choose. but less than 15% of people ever change their medicare plans after their initial enrollment. i know that book is a little daunting that you got. but if you have a supplemental plan and in good health you probably want to shop around, because you may can save money by switching to another country. if you have medicare make sure all your doctors are still in the network, understand the deductible and out of pocket limits, as well as the prescription drug choices. here's some good news, average premiums are set to drop by 4% on average to $31.40 a month. again, on average. some more, some less. >> that's great to hear. what about medicare part d drug plan? >> reporter: this is where things get interesting.

the coverage just automatically renews. but you can spend a little bit of time, maybe a lot, and switch to a different plan. it could save you hundreds on drugs. part d plans routinely change something called their formularies. that is the list of medications that are covered. the rules under which they are covered. odds are your current premium for drugs will be higher next year because among the 10 most popular part d are set to increase by an average of 4% next year. you know you got a good savings in the previous one, but now this will cost more. but there's a great tool for shopping for plans. medicare has it itself. medicare.gov find a plan.
