and colorado attracts the political spotlight again. donald trump is popping into a couple of cities today. we are live with what's on his agenda as we are now less than three weeks out to election day. good morning, everybody. i'm alan gionet. >> i'm britt moreno. we are expecting some much needed rain. let's get over to ashton and figure out where this is all going to hit today. good morning. >> good morning to you, britt. hi alan and good tuesday morning, everybody. there is a chance for seeing rain coming up tonight. but i'm afraid the best chance is going to northern colorado, not in the southern part of the state, where we really need that rain near the fire burning near pueblo. wind speeds are much, much lighter this morning than they were yesterday afternoon. we had gusts over 30 miles per hour yesterday. single digits wind speeds. but it is chilly. 30s and 40s across town now. your full fiveday4cast is coming up. let's get a check on the traffic with joel. good morning.

lonely drive. great speeds southbound coming into town. speeds into the 50s, 10 minutes from thornton to denver. starting to slow down a little bit through commerce city. copter 4 has launched. we'll get our first look at the roadways coming up. one of two girls accused of plotting to murder students and staff at mountain vista high school in highlands ranch is expected in court. today's hearing comes with anticipated information in this case. our jamie leary live at the courthouse in douglas county this morning as she continues to follow the what's happening. jamie. >> reporter: good morning. alan. brook higgins will appear this morning, her alleged coconspirator not far behind her. but for this morning the judge will likely set a date for much anticipated hearing her attorneys have been waiting to set for months. the district attorney's office says this morning the judge will likely set a date for the reverse transfer hearing.

because it's her attorneys' shot at getting the case back to juvenile court. they were just 16 when they were arrested last december. higgins allegedly not only wrote about her plans, but how she wished she could have taken part in the columbine attacks. her attorneys claimed in court that investigators have sent her a flimsy case around her journal and this crime is a thought crime at best. her attorneys have been working to get that reverse transfer hearing for some say both girls have been waiting far too long. they've been in custody and both being charged as adults with conspiracy to first first degree murder and first degree murder after deliberation. jamie leary, cbs4 morning news. thank you so much. this has burned 15,000 acres

the junkins fire is quickly growing in southern colorado and we know structures have in fact already burned. this morning we also know fema stepped in to help. now fire officials can use federal funding to fight that fire. the junkins fire is burning in custer and pueblo counties. this is near westcliffe. >> reporter: this morning firefighters are hoping today they can make some progress on in the distance you can see the glow from those flames. more than 100 people have been evacuated. 3,000 people either evacuated or on preevacuation notice. we have been able to confirm with the custer county sheriff that several structures have burned, including at least one home. no injuries reported, though, with this fire. it all started about 3:40 yesterday morning. and by noon it had already

crews from throughout southeastern colorado initially responding to this fire. but they are getting backup from a type one team coming in to take over this fire today. we're told there will be at least four air tankers attacking this fire from above, and hand crews, those hot shot crews are en route to hopefully start making some progress on a containment here. a lot of folks watching this one very closely because there is a lot of smoke an thing blew up yesterday. more winds like we had yesterday with red flag warnings are expected here in the burn area. reporting near westcliffe, matt kroschel. >> thanks a lot, matt. let's go to ashton and find out where we might get some help. the good news is there's going to be much less wind in southern colorado today compared to yesterday. but i'm afraid the chance for rain there is close to zero, even tonight when the northern mountains will see some snow and we may see a few raindrops

they'll stay completely dry. temperatures in the 30s for the denver area. 30s in the mountains as well. we have one little area of moisture in the state, that's in northwest colorado along and to the west of highway 13 between craig and meeker. there is snow falling there. enough snow to cause at least minor accumulation for our friends in that part of the state. by noon today, 60 degrees. a high temperature this afternoon of 65. that's about 10 degrees cooler than we were yesterday. tomorrow looks even cooler than for seeing some rain as well as snow tonight. we'll break down the timing straight ahead. now let's get a check on the traffic. good morning. we're getting our first look from copter 4 at the roadways over i-70 and i-225. not seeing any delays along this portion of the drive. a lot of cars out there, typical this time of day. want to show you the drive southbound coming down into town, speeds from the 40s into the 30s behind an accident blocking off the right shoulder. 11 minutes from thornton to

some slowing northbound along i- 225 approaching i-70. we've got lights malfunctioning lowell and 46th. treat that as a four-way stop. turn on our partners koa newsradio for the latest traffic and cbs4 weather together. joel, thank you so much. new this morning, denver police respond to a stabbing on south federal late last night. it happened near union avenue. we know one person was taken to the hospital in condition. but it's not clear what led to the stabbing. police have not released any suspect information just yet. a developing story now, we know more about the man accused of planting a homemade bomb outside the nederland police department last week. david ansberry has ties to a radical hippie group that apparently tormented people in boulder some 40 years ago. ansberry was spotted on surveillance video at a king soopers in denver.

bomb. meanwhile, people in nederland say they unknowingly helped him. >> he was adamant about one of his bags not being touched and the other one i was allowed to take up to the cab with me. >> investigators arrested ansberry saturday at midway airport in chicago. if convicted, he faces up to 20 years in federal prison. campaign 2016, you can expect the mail in ballots in your mailbox this week. and the presidential candidates are back. donald trump colorado again today. cbs4's shawn chitness live at the capitol now with a look ahead as we near the end in this election season. shawn. >> reporter: yeah, alan, a lot for voters to be thinking about as those ballots are coming out and both campaigns taking colorado seriously, making sure that they get the attention of those voters. later today the gop nominee himself, trump, will be here.

to the western slope speaking in grand junction later in the afternoon. this comes just a day after his son, donald, jr., made two stops around the denver metro area. the nominee clearly wanting to take colorado seriously and making frequent stops to this area as we get closer to the election. but the latest numbers from you gov.com shows has about a 47% over trump's 41%. clinton herself is not campaigning. but last night senator bernie sanders spent a second day in colorado. he was at cu boulder trying to get younger voters more excited about supporting clinton. so again we do have that final debate tomorrow. that's when we were going to see both candidates back out there in nevada for that matchup. of course, ballots have been going out this week for voters across colorado. live at the state capitol, shawn chitness, cbs4 morning

new this morning, russia announced it will stop airstrikes on aleppo and syria. officials say this will help humanitarian aid. it also means anyone, including rebels, can leave to the neighboring province. registered sex offender accused of assaulting a teenaged girl is now off the streets police tell us. investigators in boulder year-old christopher ehlebracht met a 14-year-old victim on an app called whisper. parents should make a note of that. he picked her up and brought her to his home where the assault happened. he has a history of attempted sexual assault on a child. boulder police armed with a warrant arrested him.

our almost full moon overhead. the last couple of days we've gotten a lot of pictures of the stunning moon. take a look at this one from yesterday. james in golden capturing the moon as it was rising. linda in broomfield captured that sight of the moon. boulder at 37 degrees this morning. it's 48 in grand junction. 29 in laramie, wyoming. and 44 in burlington. a widespread of temperatures depending where you're at. later today it will our cooling trend continues, since the weekend when we were in the 80s. 70s yesterday and today we'll be in the 60s. most of the state in fact will experience highs in the 60s today. of course, some mountain towns will be cooler. 56 in frisco. doppler 4000 showing a few rain and snow showers in far northwest colorado. craig, meeker, that's where some snow is falling this morning. there's a big upper level storm system in northern california. we're watching it because it's

next 24 hours. it's going to move very quickly and it's going to skirt along the colorado/wyoming state line. it's why the best chance of rain tonight will be areas to the north. here's the futurecast. going to pause this at 3:00 this afternoon. a few rain and snow showers for the northern mountains. tonight, this is 10:00 tonight, much better chance for rain from fort collins up to cheyenne versus denver down to the south. the mountains will also see snow tonight. 2to perhaps up to 6 inches of snow along i-70, the east side of vail pass. 65 today in denver. 58 tomorrow. 62 thursday. and 70s come back for friday and the weekend. here's joel with the latest on traffic. good morning. i-25 and c-470, look at the headlights as folks stream into the tech center from the south. going to be a loaded up drive this morning. we have a traffic alert northbound along i-25. cdot camera we have up there, it's kind of angled down and

direction of i-25 as you approach meade. highway 56 will take you out to berthoud. look at the backups, almost highway 66 in the northbound direction. another accident approaching highway 34 as well. the line of purple along highway 34 where that work is going to continue. u.s. 36 really the only way to get to estes park right now as that work continues. that's going to be through the spring. across the denver o well as northbound along i-225 behind this accident near colfax. all the way to i-70 a lot of volume. here's a look at the drive times, southbound coming into town not too bad. eastbound along i-270 speeds dipping down into the 30s now on that drive. expect to pay more for that orange juice soon, and not that you'd mix it with bourbon, but workers are on strike at the jim beam plant in kentucky. let's find out what's

debate tomorrow. today is a pivotal day in the campaign and the nominees have eyes on colorado. cbs4's shawn chitness is live at the capitol with a look at who is in our state today. good morning, shawn. >> reporter: britt, good morning. definitely both campaigns want to take colorado seriously, hope to win it. but the latest poll numbers do show that one campaign is starting to pull ahead and have a stronger presence in this state. so that's clearly why it is important for both of them be here. latest numbers from yougov.com give hillary clinton a lead over trump, 47% to 41%. while clinton is not campaigning today, she did have one of her top supporters here yesterday. last night senator bernie sanders was at cu boulder trying to get young voters excited about supporting clinton. that was his second day in a row being here in colorado. later today the gop nominee, donald trump, makes two stops in our state. he'll start the day in colorado

documents from a private e-mail server investigation says her undersecretary tried to convince the fbi to see their way clear to marking an e-mail pertaining to benghazi unclassified. there was discussion that that would be in exchange for okaying more fbi personnel in iraq. the fbi ultimately rejected that idea, which would have meant archiving that info anyone. >> any assessor it was a tit for at that tat is insulting. melania trump defended her husband about the lewd things he said in 2005 in an interview. 6:34 on this tuesday morning.

ashton. >> a stunning sunrise this morning, britt. sun will official will be up in about an hour from now, and mostly sunny skies through most of the morning, and the clouds will be on the increase as a fast moving upper level weather disturbance makes its way into colorado. take a look at these temperatures. locations to the west of the continental divide are 20, even 30 degrees colder than you were yesterday at this time. you're definitely feeling the chill in the western portion of the state. aspen, craig, at least 30 degrees colder than yesterday. we even have a colorado. in the denver area temperatures currently in the 30s. we'll top out in the 60s today. about 10 degrees cooler than it was yesterday. similar situation for our friends on the eastern plains. warmest spot in the state will be out west, grand junction about 70 later on. i mentioned that rain and snow. you can see it along highway 13 between craig and meeker. it's not much, but just enough to possibly create accumulation out that way. there's that upper level storm system in northern california.

30s. both directions along i-70 from i-25 to i-225 speeds into the 40s and 50s. here we are across the denver metro area, it's loaded up in all of the usual spots. we are watching an accident northbound along i-25 approaching meade. look at the backups to highway 66 because of this. joel, thank you so much. a lot of red on that map. happening today, the man accused of attacking a planned parenthood clinic in colorado springs is expected to face judge today. robert dear was found not competent to stand trial in august. he has been getting treatment at the state mental hospital since may. he is charged with the deaths of three people from that attack last november. update now to a murder investigation in denver's capitol hill neighborhood. police want to find whoever killed rene wells earlier this month. wells died after he was shot on colfax near pennsylvania. police are hoping for tips to crack that case.

could see movement in the case of two teenage girls in douglas county accused of plotting to murder classmates and staff at mountain vista high school. the plot was apparently thwarted last december. jamie leary has been following this story for us and is live this morning at the douglas county courthouse. jamie. >> reporter: good morning, britt. there have been quite a few delays in this case over the last 10 months. but this morning we'll finally learn what a crucial date will be set for a hearing for the district attorney's office said this morning a judge will likely set a date for reverse transfer hearing. this is the hearing that brooke higgins' attorneys have been waiting for. it's their shot at getting her case turned back to juvenile court, where the punishment is far less severe. brook higgins and is he enin a johnson were 16 when they were arrested last december. higgins even went as far as

she wished she could have taken part in the columbine attacks. in court her attorneys claim the investigators centered a flimsy case around her therapy journal and said this crime is a thought crime at best. her attorneys have been working to get this hearing set for some time now. they say both girls have been waiting for far too long. both have been in custody since last december, so just over 10 months and as adults with conspiracy to commit first degree murder and after deliberation. higgins is expected to appear here at 9:30 this morning. live from denver county court, jamie leary. a destructive wildfire in custer and pueblo counties, the junkins fire flareed up yesterday east of westcliffe. it's burned more than 15,000 acres. none of it is contained.

homes. crews responded to zeno way yesterday. that fire started on the back yard, spread. and the man who thinks he is responsible is taking responsibility. you can see the damage there. he says it was an accident and he hopes to help those who lost their valuables. nobody was hurt. happening now, denver zoo says adults wearing scary clown costumes to boo at the zoo will be turned away. this is after a reports fake and occasionally real about scary clowns attempting to lure children. >> felt like it reached a point to where there would be enough people concerned about clown costumes that we needed to ban it. >> i understand the concern, but to ban all clown costumes is a little over the top. >> there have not been any specific threats at the zoo. small children can still dress as clowns. target pulled clown masks

those creepy clown threats across the country. as we've reported, most of them have been hoaxes. there have been a few arrests, including gunmen in clown masks robbing gas stations and restaurants. new information now about the gruesome murders of eight people in ohio. investigators now say it was not a mexican drug cartel that committed the crime. they think a local shooter or shooters killed the family six months ago. the family was style in the middle of the night. it is the biggest case the state of ohio has ever seen. investigators say they work on it every day. >> reporters aren't pleased with us either, because we are going on six months. people want answers. the only answer that i can give you is we work on it every day. >> authorities found marijuana at three of four crime scenes. investigators are looking for

four weeks we had it going on and the last two weeks we don't. >> to get back on track, they need to focus improving in three areas. the first trouble spot, the offensive line. this was a broncos' top priority when they signed okung and steep son to -- stephen onto play tackle. they lost their early season momentum in the run me rushing since their week two win over indianapolis. they've been held to fewer than 3 yards per carry twice in the last four games and allowed 12 sacks in the last three games. while their defense is ranked four in total defense and number one in the pass, how they open games is a concern. they've allowed five of their six opponents to score on their first possession. as a result, the broncos defense has surrendered 31

opposing offenses. by contrast, last season they surrendered only 24 points on their opponents' first drive in all 16 games. cornerback chris harris junior put it best when he said, that's just not what we're about. trouble spot number three is something the broncos will have to deal with until they can make opponents stop. the broncos' defense has had trouble defending opposing runningbacks and tight ends in the massing game. opponents have chosen to avoid the best in the football, instead isolated davis and marshall and broncos' safeties in coverage. guys, there you have it. if the broncos can clean up those three items they should avoid their first three-game
