good morning, everybody. this is wednesday, october 19. this is the news on cbs4. i'm alan gionet. today the third and final debate will be taking place. we're going to tell you what's happening locally as voters last time. meantime, we have a change in the weather in the high country. we have snow. here's ashton who told us it was coming. >> indeed. good morning to you alan, and good morning, everybody. we still have a few snowflakes flying in the mountains including along i-70. we'll check in with joel for the latest conditions in just a moment. first i want to show you the denver metro area. yes, there are still a couple of renegade raindrops in the area.

between now and i'd say about 6:00 a.m. there could be a quick light shower in the denver area, but after that dry. around 40 degrees. chilly, but not as cold as tomorrow morning. temperatures in the mountains 20s and 30s now. expect clouds early on. what's left of the rain and the snow will be ending rapidly. by the time we get into the noon hour today we'll be at 53 with sunshine. that will be the big story compared to where we've been recently it will feel quite cool today. highs mid-50s, which is a little below normal for this time of year. we're going back far above normal for the weekend. we'll check the weekend forecast coming up. right now let's check in with joel. our cdot cam is really telling the story along the i- 70 bound corridor.

big fat flakes. here it's closer to loveland we have chain restrictions in place both directions. you can see the snow that's accumulated. road/weather index showing you the situation. turning from a mix into the high country past georgetown out to idaho springs and then a snowy mess. ongoing construction work that will slow you down a bit, and maybe wet roads portions of c-470. along i-70 it seems to clear up at least on the drive to watkins. we haven't had moisture for a while. you have all the oil and tire and stuff from the tires and it can get sick. >> thanks a lot. wildfire in southern colorado is doing more damage than first thought. it's burned more than 25 square miles and it's destroyed five homes so far. it's in westcliffe, in the

of the sand dunes. here's matt kroschel. >> reporter: at a community meeting last night, people who have evacuated, and there are more than 300 of them, were able to get more information about their homes in particular. the sheriff confirming five houses have burned and 13 other buildings. today we were on the fire lines as we watched a lot more of the aircraft start to attack from above. now about 12 aircraft are being assigned to 300 firefighters working on the ground, and right now the fire more than 16,000 acres and it's continuing to burn in several different directions. in westcliffe smoke completely blanketing the entire valley as those winds have shifted towards the west. here on the eastern flank of this fire, they're watching as the smoke gets closer and the flames continue to move. now the sheriff says the

they're going to be contacting homeowners as they continue to explore this fire area, and it's a very large fire burn area. if they find any more homes that were lost, they will call those homeowners directly. i'm matt kroschel, cbs4 mountain newsroom. donald trump coming off a visit to colorado as he gets ready for tonight's final debate in las vegas. polls show trump is trailing by growing margins in several swing states, including colorado. he insists the po as for hillary clinton, she has been off the campaign trail preparing for the debate. >> reporter: donald trump spent the evening before the final debate vowing to bring term limits to congress as president. >> it's time to sweep the corruption out of washington. >> reporter: the republican nominee goes into tonight's showdown as the underdog, having lost support among women voters amid multiple allegations of sexual assault and harassment.

forward to corroborate claims lobbyed against him by a writer from "people" magazine who said he forcibly kissed her in 2005. >> these were madeup allegations played up by the media. >> reporter: hillary clinton said she's ready to tackle the issue of the latest e-mails. by the russians designed to hurt her campaign. >> reporter: the format for tonight is the same as the first, with clinton and trump standing at different podiums as they make their nine case. university of las vegas professor jacob johnson thinks tonight's could be uglier.

if he'll show up. it's a day after the university of denver issued a campus safety alert. they said whitman is a sexual offender. the police graffiti is able to identify what was spray painted in the area and tie it back to the suspect. police are hoping they can arrest m charges about graffiti is set for 8:00 a.m. shawn chitness, cbs4 news. jill wagner is live on the floor of the new york stock exchange with your moneywatch report. >> reporter: good morning. strong earnings from companies like united health care, netflix sent the markets higher. nasdaq jumped 44. futures are pointing to a

transportation is proposing new rules that require airlines refund baggage fees when they significantly delay the arrival of your luggage. next year's cost of living adjustment for social security will be just .3 of a percent. that means the typical check will go up just four dollars. not a lot, but more than this year, there was no inflations so benefits all. mark zuckerburg is looking for the voice of his home intelligence system and robert downey, jr. said he'll do it. he responded to zuckerburg's post and said he would do it in a heartbeat. no word if zuckerburg will take him up on that. >> i still want something that folds my laundry.

you'll notice more safe ways in the metro area. the final albertsons stores are no more. they have safeway signs and fixtures inside and out. officials will also hold a ceremonial ribbon cutting at the south buckley road safeway in aurora at 10:00 a.m. one of denver's most neglected neighborhoods is getting some improvements. officials will break ground today in the westhood neighborhood. the plan will add 170 unit housing complexes. the city approved the plan in july to make much needed changes for the 17,000 people living in the area. we're learning more about the man accused of planting a bomb outside the nederland police station. a former sheriff has revealed a possible motive.

donald trump and congressman coffman would punish women. and coffman tried to redefine rape to mean only forcible rape. in coffman's bill, victims who were drugged, even minors, victims of statutory rape, would not be considered rape victims. coffman and trump are too dangerous for colorado.

this is the news on cbs4. in health you may be brushing your teeth. while there is a new toothpaste that combats plaque and heart attacks and it shows users where plaque is hiding and it also reduces inflammation that can lead to heart attacks and strokes. florida researchers tested people for a protein that signals inflammation and then had them brush with plaque hd here for two months. the protein numbers afterwards were significantly lower and health possibly improved. the centers for disease control and prevention is

programs that put more sealants on children's teeth. less than half of all school age children get them, which protects against about 50% of cavities. low income children are 20% less likely they have them than higher income children. new study finds a natural compound can help women with polly cystic ovary syndrome, the leading cause of and grapes helps moderate hormone imbalances. we have an update to a story our health specialist kathy walsh brought us last week. good news of the colorado teenager battling ovarian cancer. her mother says the 16-year-old is now in remission. peyton was diagnosed on her 16th birthday with stage four ovarian cancer. that's an illness that usually

appeared pregnant. she has had an operation and heavy radiation and is doing well, which is just awesome. we love telling you that story. ashton is back now, as we have a look at our weather on this wednesday. >> good morning to you, alan. good morning everybody. as expected we've had an upper level weather disturbance moving over the northern half of colorado since late yesterday. you can see where the main energy with this system is. it's in nebraska. look at all that rain up in nebraska. as we zoom into changed what's called the volume coverage pattern on the radar. looks like there was rain and it disappears, when in fact it wasn't rain there. we're done with the rain at this point from denver up to fort collins. there could still be a renegade rain drop, but that would be it. in the mountains there is still snow falling. winter driving conditions along portions of i-70. once you make your way up to georgetown and into summit

snow flying there. and up towards winter park going over berthoud pass we have some snow. out in picking county we have snow this morning as well on the north side of aspen. temperatures in the mountains are in the 20s and 30s. we have 40s now for denver and the front range. upper 30s, lower 40s on the eastern plains. later on today it's going to stay cool. it will be by far the coolest day this week. temperatures topping out in the mid-50s around denver, which is a little below normal, actually, for this time of year. typically we're in the 60s. hard to know what's normal when it comes to fall in colorado. 40s and 50s for mountain temperatures later today. clouds to start the day. by mid-morning the clouds will be out of here. what's left of the mountain snow should end by mid-morning today. 56 today. tomorrow 61, which is closer to normal. and friday and the weekend we go far above normal once again. this will be our fourth weekend in a row with warmer than

let's get a check opt roads, including the i-70 corridor and mountains. does look a little better just from our cdot camera. we still have chain and passenger traction restrictions in place at vail pass. you can see the plows doing the work they need to do this morning. here we are up on that mountain drive. you can see the pink mix there, and snow on 285 as well. that will be a tough drive portions of e-470 this morning. just take it slower in those places where we've had fresh rain. doesn't take a lot of water to make you hydroplane. >> no. as a matter of fact, a little bit does the damage. denver's archdiocese wants to build a retreat in the foothills of jefferson county. neighbors are worried and they say the church ought to be restricted. cbs4's investigator brian maass

raced through this area in recent years. >> absolutely for us it is life or death. >> reporter: which is why neighbors are so opposed to what the catholic church is planning. the church wants to build a religious retreat and conference center with a lodge, cabins and youth center that visitors each month. but the residents say it could magnify -- >> this will magnify that fear so much we can't grasp it. >> reporter: david lives in nearby douglas ranch subdivision. he said a wildfire that started here would reach his neighborhood in less than two minutes and potentially cut off the road into his 40 home

the fire activity we've had here in the past 20 years. >> reporter: last month the local fire chief called this the highest fire risk area in the front range, saying a blaze would be unstoppable. he urged county commissioners to kill the proposal. >> we do not have the ability to protect this proposal. i see this as a very much a negative thing for the entire. >> if i same concerns. if anyone would not want a fire there, it would be us. we bought 150 acres and want to build a great facility and we would not want to see a fire happen up there. >> reporter: he says the archdiocese would make it safe. >> we want to work with the community. we're going to be neighbors for a long time with everyone up

official fall in boston. this pumpkin weighs in at 1,082 pounds. it is now at the boston public market where it will be on display for the remainder of the fall. it outweighs last year's biggest pumpkin by 62 pounds. stephen colbert welcomed wayne gretzky as he promoted his new book. he even talked about playing with legendary gordy that day and that was my first suit. >> how much longer after this -- >> i was 10. >> how long before you were playing pro hockey? >> seven years. >> did you ever play against him? >> we played together on the all-star game. world league all-star game. that was fun. because gordy was in the locker room and my sweater was so big. i was 145 pounds that year. the jersey was so big, gordy
