it is 6:00 now on the mark. a fire burning in southern colorado is worse than firefighters thought. we have the latest on the junkins fire as community members come together. the presidential candidates have one more shot to win over voters in tonight's third and final debate in las vegas. we're in for a fall day. snow in the high country. co yeah, we are here. this is the news on cbs4. good morning, i'm alan gionet. >> i'm britt moreno. thanks for waking up with us. let's get over to ashton and figure out what's happening today. good morning. good wednesday morning. 1to 4 inches of snow in the colorado high country overnight. some of us saw a few raindrops, but we're done with the rain for the front range. what's left of the snow in the

still rain along i-76 in northeast colorado, especially from sterling and into nebraska. our friends watching in western nebraska, yes, you definitely have rain this morning. all that will move to the east of our region later on and behind all this, dry warmer weather going into the weekend. we'll detail that coming up. now let's get a check on the traffic with joel. i-70 at vail pass, and those bald tires aren't going to do, passenger traction restrictions in place. and chain and passenger restrictions in place hillary clinton and donald trump are getting ready for tonight's final presidential debate. this one is in las vegas. both candidates will try to shift their focus away from their controversies. trump is facing claims of sexual assault and harassment. he spent last night in grand junction. he brought out the idea of a constitutional amendment to term limit congress. trump goes into tonight's showdown as the underdog. he has lost support from women voters. six people came forward

a writer from "people" magazine. they verify she talked about at the time years ago and feared retribution from trump if she brought it out. >> these were made up allegations played up by the media very unfair. >> hillary clinton is dealing with a scandal as more hacked e- mails coming out about about bernie sanders' campaigns. latest documents show aides mocking sanders. >> this is an effort led by the russians. >> the format of tonight's debate same as the first. they'll stand at different podiums. our political specialist shaun boyd will be covering that debate tonight. you can watch it here on cbs4. coverage begins at 7:00. tonight there are debate watch parties across colorado. there is also an opportunity to

screen. cbs4's jamie leary is live at sheridan in the regal river point there. good morning, jamie. >> reporter: good morning, britt. if you're one of the many who had trouble turning your eyes away from the first and second debates, then you might as well take advantage of this. yoing u're notto miss a single detail with the battle on the big screen. not to mention, it's free. regal cinemas did this for the second debate and was so impressed with the turnout, decideto third and final one. it's really no surprise after the viewer count from the very first debate it was the most watched presidential debate ever, with 84 million people tuning in to watch the nominees interrupt one another, argue about temperment. here's a list of some of the locations you can catch the debated tonight. they're showing it at a total

across the u.s. regal's chief content programming officer says the company wants to encourage local communities to be engaged in public policies. in addition to the free showing, they're also offering a free soda with purchase of a popcorn. you can catch the debate tonight 7:00 p.m. local, 9:00 eastern at the university of nevada las vegas. live in sheridan, jamie leary, cbs4 morning news. thank you. we have a warning for parents this morning. after a man is accused of harassing at least two girls in thornton on october 3rd a girl saw a naked man in a car near 134th and high street. he motioned for her to come to the car. a week later a man drove up to another girl and made lewd comments. in both cases the man was driving a white four door sedan. let's get to weather and traffic every 10 minutes on the 4's. ashton starts us off. >> good morning. live look at elitch gardens. the sun will be up at 7:14. probably at least a few clouds

coming up. then skies will clear as we progress through the morning. checking out one of our weather watchers, doug goodman the north side of lafayette. 42 degrees there. and that's about where most of us are in the denver area, upper 30s, lower 40s. on doppler 4000, a few snowflakes in the mountains. very little, if any, additional accumulation up there. moisture along i-76. rain falling from the east side of fort morgan into nebraska is here's the forecast, by lunchtime we'll be at 53. a high today of 56. it will be the coolest day this week. but with the sun shining this afternoon shouldn't feel too bad. tomorrow will be a cold, cold start. and then a big warmup for the weekend. now let's check the traffic. we're seeing a lot more volume across the denver metro area. here's a look from copter 4. look at this long line of headlights and taillights through commerce city along i- 270 this morning.

town speeds into the 60s and 50s still. nine minutes from thornton to denver. westbound along i-76, eastbound along i-270, that is loading up. this is a look from our mousetrap cam, we have it pointed to the west. headlights on the eastbound direction on the approach to i- 25. couple of trouble spots, southbound along i-25 at evans where we have a stall off to the shoulder. and lights malfunctioning 40th and central park boulevard. t what about up in the high country? we've seen some wintry driving conditions in that direction. if you are about to get in your car, turn on our partners koa newsradio for the latest traffic and cbs4 weather together. more homes have burned in the junkins wildfire burning in the mountains west of pueblo. that fire zero percent

than 15,750 acres. evacuated residents got new information from fire managers at a community meeting last night. our matt kroschel was there. >> reporter: at a community meeting here in florence last night, people who have evacuated, and there are more than 300 of them, were able to kind of get more information about their homes in particular. the sheriff now confirming five houses have burned and 13 other buildings. today we were on the fire lines as we watched a lot more of the aircraft start to atta being assigned to this fire. 300 firefighters working on the ground and right now the fire more than 16,000 acres and it's continuing to burn in several different directions. in westcliffe, smoke completely blanketing the entire valley as those winds have shifted towards the west. here on the eastern flank of this fire, a community is watching as the smoke gets

flames continue to move. now the sheriff says the evacuations remain in place. they're going to be contacting homeowners as they continue to explore this fire area. it's a very large fire burn area. if they find any more homes that were lost, they will call those homeowners directly. i'm matt kroschel, cbs4 mountain newsroom. new details on the man accused of planting a bomb outside the nederland police station. a former sheriff has revealed possible motive for this crime. vestigators say they believe suspect david ansberry was part of a radical group decades ago. f0 he may have been seeking revenge for the death of guy goughner. ansberry allegedly planted a bomb outside the nederland police department last week. investigators identified the 64- year-old by a cell phone that

guy goughner disappeared in nederland in 1971. he was last seen at the pioneer inn. former boulder county sheriff george epps says investigators suspected city manager forbes was to blame. >> my recollection is he was very ill and the nursing home and wanted to get it off his chest. >> so far the fbi's theory remains unproven. three men who went after them say they were laughing as they attacked. cody says the last thing he remembers is three people grabbing him and ramming his head into a brick wall. jackie says one of them held her while another punched her

>> they were laughing. and that's what was so disturbing and haunting is they were laughing while they were kicking him over and over again. >> the victims are thanking a security guard from a nearby hotel who helped them. bull the three got -- but the three got away. a graffiti artist is on the run. he is due in court on a domestic but if shows up, he will be also arrested for tagging. denver police believe he's responsible for graffiti found across the du campus and at the nearby methodist church on university. 38 degrees. here's what's coming up next. donald trump's running mate is coming to colorado ahead of tonight's debate. what mike pence might be talking about today. and president obama hosts his last state dinner in office. the celebs and political figures in attendance.

f0 this is the news in health. welcome back, everyone. a new type of toothpaste aims to combat plaque as well as heart attacks and strokes. this is the news in your health report. a new toothpaste shows users where plaque is hiding and scientists say it also reduces inflammation that can lead to heart attacks and strokes. florida researchers tested ic signals inflammation. then had them brush with plaque hd for two months. it's a toothpaste. the protein numbers after were significantly lower. a new study finds a natural compound can help women with polycystic ovary syndrome. researchers say the compound found in red wine and grapes helps moderate hormone imbalance.

there this morning. some parts of colorado looks a little different than this. >> it does. in the mountains we have 1 to 4 inches of fresh snow from last night over the higher mountains. here in denver we hoped to get a little bit of rain, but the expectations were low and we didn't see any measurable precipitation in denver. sun will be up in one hour from now. here's why we're starting to get concerned. below normal with precipitation for the month, season and year. so far this month, almost half an inch below for the season, more than 1.5 below normal going back to september. for 2016, approaching 2.5 inches below normal with precipitation. the drought situation continuing to get worse and worse. we'll get the latest drought outlook coming up tomorrow and we'll update you on that. in the mountains now still a little bit of snow falling in far western boulder county. out west we had snow earlier around aspen. it's cleared out at this point. big area of high pressure is

west of us. clear skies utah, nevada, into california. as that high makes its way to the east over the next three or four days, we're going to see nothing but sunshine here. today cool. tonight cold. freeze expected for denver tonight. then after that we'll start a warmup going into the weekend. temperatures now in the 30s and 40s around denver. same situation on the eastern plains. 20s and 30s in the mountains. later on we'll see 60s for the western slope, including 64 at grand junction. 50s and 60s east. 50s for collins and the entire front range. there it is, tomorrow morning 31 for the low. then 61 tomorrow afternoon. 70s for friday and stick around for the weekend. here's joel. we're watching eastbound along i-70 at havana something off to the shoulder. nothing that will slow you down too bad. but not a lot of room in that roadway to begin with. take off a piece of that shoulder, and it starts to slow things down. southbound coming down into town, speeds from the 60s into

denver. westbound along i-76, eastbound along i-270, a sign that the drive is slowing down. from our mousetrap cam, headlights in the southbound direction, but cars in the express toll lane and far left lane going pretty much the same speeds. if you wait it out, it will save you a couple of bucks. here's that issue we were seeing eastbound along i-70 as you get to havana. up in the high country getting word the passenger traction restrictions have been lifted up over looking like a much better drive now up into the high country. thanks, joel. samsung is making it easier for note 7 owners to change out their phones before a flight. we've seen them doing it at dia. the most popular halloween costumes are revealed for kids and adults this year. let's have a look. jill wagner live from the floor of the new york stock exchange with the news. jill. >> reporter: good morning, alan. strong earnings from companies like united health care and

they always look so uncomfortable. >> jill, thanks a lot. great to see you. >> it is cute to see, though. it's time to take a look at our top stories this morning. republican vice presidential candidate mike pence is campaigning in durango today. his event starts at noon at the fairgrounds. yesterday he held a rally in north carolina where he gave out supplies to hurricane matthew victims. he addressed voter fraud. this is the third republican party stop in colorado this brush fire in los angeles. it's burned at least 15 acres. l.a. fire brought in helicopters to keep the flames from spreading downhill, where there are homes and other buildings. officials say the fire isn't threatening homes now, but firefighters are having a difficult time knocking it down because of high winds, low humidity, and some really rough terrain out there. and president obama welcomed the prime minister of italy along with many other celebrities in his last state

crowd included nancy pelosi, comedian jerry seinfeld, and cbs this morning's gayle king. he held 13 state dinners during his terms in office. bill clinton holds the record, he apparently hosted 28 dinners over his two terms. the chicago cubs made history last night. but for all the wrong reasons. no score dodgers 1-0 here. next inning, hit deep to right and the dodgers were rolling. rich hill with a dominant day on the mound, six shutout innings. dodgers win 6-0. the cubs are now shut out in back to back playoff games. even the cubs have never done that before. l.a. has a 2-1 series lead now. game four is tonight at 6:00.

cold. good morning. >> good morning to you. i'm stepping out here for a moment, so i don't need a jacket. if you're going to be out here for a while you need a jacket. i can see my breath, and i can see mostly clear skies, with the exception of a few clouds. once the sun comes up in about 45 minutes from now officially, we will get to enjoy a lot of sunshine today. but it will be a cool day. highs only in the 50s. doppler 4000 still showing a couple of snowflakes literally just a few left in mountains. there's not much after 1 to 4 inches of snow over the higher mountains overnight. we're watching rain in northeast colorado from sterling and into western nebraska. wet roadways for you this morning. let's get a check on those roads with joel. watching the drive from our tech center camera from the tech center through the bridges. it's really loading up. southbound along i-225 as well. look at these headlights. a lot of company on that drive. here's a look at the drive times, southbound coming into town, speeds into the 50s.

in a bit because we have report of an accident southbound at 84th. look at those speeds really slowing down eastbound along i- 270 to commerce city. authorities are hoping a man with a sordid history shows up for a court date. if he does, denver police say he'll be arrested for another crime. shawn chitness live at the courthouse in denver where authorities will be waiting for the arrival of this man. we're not warning >> reporter: denver police have taken their time to make it clear this is their intention to arrest him if he shows up, not shying away from that plan. he is expected to be in court in a little bit for a case involving domestic violence. denver police want to arrest him for charges related to graffiti by the du campus. we'll see what happens very soon here. the university of denver themselves put out an alert across campus yesterday related to this.

samson whitmore is a registered sex offender and stalking the campus. they say graffiti found across the university and as well as the church near the school was done by whit more and the police were able to identify work they saw on poles and buildings spray painted around campus and tie it back to that suspect. we'll have to see if he appears in court. that's scheduled for 8:00 a.m. live in denver, shawn chitness, cbs4 morning news. thank you. police are also looking for two men involved in an attempted armed robbery near the du campus. this happened last night at asbury and york. du tweeted that a gun was fired into the ground. police say they are looking for two black men, around 5'8" tall, with dark clothing. polls show donald trump trailing by growing margins in several states, including colorado. trump isn't buying those polls

snow on it. looks like all the conditions are improving. we'll check the specific road conditions with joel in just a moment. i-70 closer to denver, this is genesee, sun will be up at 7:14. nice shot there from the camera pointed to the east of course. still a few snowflakes flying around in the mountains, but that's it. you can see a couple of clouds on top of denver. these clouds are clearing quickly. overall today will be a sunny day for us. also watching some rain along i- 76 into northeast sterling and up to sed wick county and western nevada. high pressure to the west of us will move in over the next few days. as that happens, we'll see nothing but sunshine from today through the upcoming weekend. today will be a cool day. currently we're in the upper 30s and lower 40s around denver. 20s in the mountains. later on highs will be in the 40s for most high country

along i-225. earlier stall southbound along i-25 at evans off to the shoulder, not causing any delays. nice wide open drive along c 470. i want to take you in, tell you about a construction project. riverdale will close between colorado boulevard and thornton parkway today. access to businesses and residences will be allowed. denver's catholic archdiocese wants to build a 25- acre retreat in e but neighbors are worried about the plan and they say the church should be as well. a cbs4 investigation has learned the archdiocese is trying to get the zoning changed on a 250-acre parcel of forest land off 285 and south elk creek road. they want to build a retreat and conference center with a lodge, cabins and youth center that could host thousands every month. the area has been hit by

some neighbors say the development would drastically increase chances of another wildfire. >> this is going to magnify that fear so much we can't even grasp it at this point in time. >> the local fire chief is urging county commissioners to kill the proposal. the archdiocese says they would make the area fire safe and execute a forest mitigation plan to decrease fire danger and they would work with fire officials and neighbors. jeffco common decide whether the property can be rezoned for the development. one of denver's most neglected neighborhoods is getting improvements now. officials will break ground today in the westwood neighborhood for more housing. it's on the west side of federal around mississippi. it will add a 197 unit housing complex on morrison road. the city approved the plans in july to make much needed changes for the 17,000 people who live there. there is good news for colorado teenager who has what

has ever seen. now the mother of 16-year-old peyton says her daughter is in remission. peyton was diagnosed on her 16th birthday with stage four ovarian cancer, an illness that usually affects women four times her age. she's likely to be the youngest person ever diagnosed. she's had surgery. presidential candidates square off a final time. a couple is brutally attacked after trying to stop an assault in denver. who they are thanking for saving their lives. the av's crumbled last night as we take a live picture of the eisenhower tunnel. here's michael spencer with sports. the colorado avalanche are

as you look at the guest list for the candidates they are attempting to rattle each other. trump is bringing a mother who lost a son during the benghazi attacks and she is bringing two high profile billionaires, including mark cuban who has bad blood with donald trump and that is no secret. >> i recently spoke with some colorado voters and many are frustrated. they still don't know what the candidates will do as president. they tell me they want to hear their beliefs. do you think they will tonight or attack each other again? >> reporter: i think they won't be able to escape talking about the issues and that is because the moderator, chris wallace of fox news, has made it a point he is separating this out into six specific topics, including debt, immigration, the economy, foreign hot spots and fitness to be president, so they can't just attack each other.

saturday and sunday. people dreaming of speeds into the 70s southbound coming into town, but you're not going to see it. this is the backup from a trouble spot from the gore point. look at that line long of taillights. drive times southbound coming into town, speeds dipping into the 20s behind this trouble spot. average speed, 41 miles per hour. 14 minutes on that drive. that's not your only slow spot. eastbound along u.s. 36 that continues to highway 6. southbound along i- 25 on the approach to i-25. it is running slow. not too bad. you can see the express toll lane, not like they're passing folks there around the stadium curve. that's where we see most of the slowing and more slowing from santa fe out to colorado. slow southbound along i-225. side street trouble spot monaco and colfax. watch out for that. and the other trouble spot we have is eastbound along i-70 as
