at denver police headquarters. rick, you learned more about the investigation this afternoon. >> reporter: jim and karen, it was a terrible crash that killed one and injured many others. ultimately this case has now been closed with the cause undetermined. but now we are able to see what happened. the camera records the school bus as it's approaching the level for pickup area. but you can clearly see how it runs righ directly into the sport peeler. 's tape was used in the investigation along with other information. but ultimately, no cause was determined for the crash. >> we can see dynamics but we can't make up people, we can't make out certain evidence but we can find out let me look and see is there something about the travel nature of the bus that gives me a clue as to what happened. certainly that wasn't the case. >> reporter: emergency responders rushed to the scene. the legacy high school football

after returning home from a game in california. the accident happened while the bus was making an unexplained return to the terminal. the driver carried -- an autopsy indicated she had an enlarged heart. but did not reveal that a medical condition was involved in what took place. the bus was 10 feet 11 inches high, the overhang was more than a foot lower. but denver police did not find that the driver drove off the road to avoid a collision. >> it's hard for me to conclude that because again, we had witnesses on board the bus who indicated that there was no effort to stop emergency braking. >> reporter: three legacy high school football coaches were seriously injured in the crash. but all have now returned to their jobs. i spoke today with the husband of the bus driver who was killed.

7:00 tonight at unlv. many colorado voters have received their ballots in the mail. we've gotten a lot of questions about how the postage for returning ballots works out. in denver it is $0.68. so the secretary of state says it's just safest to simply use two forever stamps and don't forget to sign your ballots. and get it in the mail by november 1st. we have all that information at the campaign 2016 section of cbsdenver.com. to the latest on efforts to fith the fire has burned more than 16,800 acres. still no containment on this one. pueblo west fire sent us these pictures today are -- the flames destroying some buildings. at least five homes are gone and evacuations near westcliffe remain in place right now. also new information tonight on a crash that shut down a part of wadsworth boulevard. the man who was hit by a car while riding his bike has died.

at around 7:00 a.m. at the intersection of wadsworth and 57th avenue. no word yet on whether the driver is going to be facing any charges. as we shall be first on four, a man suspected of recent graffiti on the du campus goes to court but not for the most recent vandalism case. the school warned students this week after the graffiti showed up. because police told du that suspect has a violent past. university campus, police were looking for the suspect and we were able to find him today. >> reporter: jim, we received a tip the suspect would be in court today. on unrelated charges. so we took a chance and that's where we found him. want to give you an example of his alleged handiwork. you see the distinctive black lines at united smith -- at the united methodist church. it appears the hunt for this man samson whittemore may have ended. samson whittemore walked into a denver courtroom wednesday, leaving behind a trail of questions. the 32-year-old registered sex

past. he's accused of spraying graffiti across the campus at the university of denver and at a nearby church. >> that's scary for anybody knowing that there's a violent offender. around campus. >> reporter: tuesday students received a safety alert. authorities posted which more space across the campus. the search ended wednesday when the suspect appeared in court to answer to previous graffiti charges. he also agreed to meet with denver police thursday ga >> i feel safer now. >> reporter: abigail skadden says the fact that whittemore showed up in court is a huge relief. >> i'm really great -- i'm really glad he showed up and i don't have to worry about other people and my roommates, don't have to worry about running into any danger. >> reporter: whittemore would not discuss the case with jamie leary. instead shaking his head and mentioning the word media. the suspect apparently out of the shadows, du students like

developing now a massive gas explosion destroys an office building, and s eight people were hurt today including three firefighters, one with a broken leg and two cups. the blast was this morning at a spa business a construction company had warned people to evacuate. after accidentally damaging a gas pipeline. obama administration proposing tough new rules for the airlines. they are meant to protect you the passengers. it includes mandatory baggage fee refunds to passengers if bags are delayed. airlines must also clarify all fees charged for seat

preferences and luggage. there could be more transparency when you buy a ticket online. sites that sell plane tickets will be banned from favoring one airline over another. some of the rules will take effect in the coming months. others are still being finalized. right now alberson stores along the front range have officially become safeway stores. albertson's acquired the safeway grocery chain last year. it is now rebranding stores around the country under one name. overnight crews changed the signs at eight albertson's in the denver area. had major renovations or are in the process of being renovated. the cdc warning all pregnant women who recently spent time in florida miami- dade county get tested for the zika virus. recommendation is for expectant moms who visited that area since august 1st. csu is at the forefront now of zika research including testing an ingredient found in grapefruit to see if it can stop the mosquitoes that spread that disease.

it's in a lot of cosmetics. >> reporter: research shows it can repel tics, csu is studying if it can both repel and kill zika infected mosquitoes. using sheep's blood they create two mosquito feeders. one smeared with nootkatone. >> we put it on our thumbs. >> reporter: these aedes aegypti mosquitoes that also spread zika ignored the one with new town -- nootkatone but devoured the other. >> so far we can say it's a good repellent. >> good. research will determine if nootkatone is the answer to battling mosquitoes and other pests. naturally. now, i'm told if this turns out to be a potent insecticide, it has the potential for use on mosquito nets in africa to prevent malaria and even here to fight the west nile virus. >> such good work up there. fascinating. >> they are at the forefront when it comes to muscular research. >> really neat.

clear skies no blanket holding the heat in. heat radiates upwards. a freeze warning from 2:00 a.m. till 8:00 a.m. all along the front range including the metro area. grand valley and then further east, yuma kit carson and cheyenne we have a frost advisory. so chilly night in store. as we take a look the cool air, down more cooler air trying to nudge in there, that's keeping this in the rain and snow mix and cooler air right into colorado. take a look at temperatures only in the 40s and 50s to the north. but as you look to the south, that's where the warm weather is. 88 in miami, 90 dallas, 93 brownsville, 91 in phoenix. some of this is going to start rotating up into our area just in time for the weekend. 61 and 65 is what we did today with 38 and 41. 64 and 36 would be normal. bailey 48, northeast arvada 59, 61 fort collins, brush 63, 57 and 56 right now northwind at 16. 27% humidity.

rushing yards including a season long burst of 17. cj is still the number 1 guy but don't be surprised if you start to see booker get more playing time. >> i think when he's had opportunities he's done really good things. you know? as a young player we're trying to get him going as far as protection and those type of things. he's starting to handle himself better. so i think he deserves more opportunities to touch the football. when he's had the opportunity he's done good stuff. the super bowl mvp getting a bit welcome at green valley ranch high school. he was there celebrating the fact green valley ranch was recently named a national blue ribbon school. talked to the students about the importance of education and signed autographs and of course considering it was von miller they did some dancing as well. >> i think we were all a little bit too shy to get there. i had a little bit of stage fright. i felt like i was "dancing with the stars" again.
