good morning, everybody. a live look outside this morning. 43 degrees on this friday morning. here's a portion of the moon you're looking at. kind of a nice start to the day. a-basin won the race. we are live from the mountain in just a mome. broncos' game when they take on the texans monday night. good morning, i'm britt moreno. this morning many people are waking up a little bit earlier to get out there to the mountains. skiers ask boarders have a lot to look forward to as a-basin is now open. our mountain news reporter is the skier connoisseur, you could say, live at a-basin now, good morning, matt. >> reporter: i'm all smiles

ones, they had nice roads this morning. thanks, joel, i think he had something to do with it. we have adrian, you've been crazy i'm sure getting ready for this. >> we are. we're stoked. happy opening day, colorado. >> reporter: i mean, the interest in what you guys are doing here and watching those snow guns and measuring how much snow we have, i'm sure is just crazy. i'm sure you're getting all the phone calls. >> it a number of passionate skiers and riders we have in this state and all over the u.s. is just tremendous. we had this beautiful summer, lot of warm temps recently, but i think seeing snow on the hills is getting people psyched. >> reporter: how much snow and what kind of conditions are folks looking at? >> today we're opening the high noon intermediate trail.

aurora police say it is because of a blown transformer. it is affecting traffic lights from yosemite to sable, and colfax to alameda. we have called xcel energy. they haven't returned our call yet, so we don't know when power will be restored. if you have family or friends in this area, let them know we stream live at cbsdenver.com. we've had the first u.s. casualty in the battle for mosul. the military did not release too many deta u.s. service member died yesterday from wound sustained by an improvised explosive device in northern iraq. this comes as kurdish forces announced a large scale operation north and northeast of mosul. the other issue involved in trying to drive out isis fighters are the refugees. the united nations refugee agency predicted some 100,000 people will arrive at this camp

weather and traffic. just about 5:34. weather and traffic done every 10 minutes on the 4s. good morning. >> good morning to you, britt. we're taking a live look, or at least i thought it was from arapahoe basin. that's probably when the sun was setting yesterday. looks like a gremlin has climbed into the weather computer. i'll tell you now we have temperatures in the lower 40s around the area. we're going to climb up into the 70s today. we were in the 60s yesterday. today we go into the 70s. then tomorrow we're going to come close to 80 high temperature. we'll take a look at the detailed weekend forecast coming up. the outlook for monday night's broncos game as well. now let's check in with joe. >> reporter: let's take you on a tour around town. this is our cdot cam at i-25 and 20th around downtown. you can see the north and southbound lanes are looking good. tech center cam the same thing. no major accidents or stalls to report on the south side of town. and we have a couple of offhighway accidents to report.

trump out on his critical comments about women. >> donald looks at the statue of liberty and sees a four. maybe a five if she loses the torch and tablet and changes her hair. >> reporter: the affair came less than 24 hours after the final debate in las vegas, which donald trump pledged not to accept the outcome of the general election. >> i would accept a clear election result, but i would also reserve my right to contest or file a legal challenge in the case of a questionable result. >> reporter: stumping for clinton in arizona, the first lady fired back. >> the voters decide who wins and loses period, end of story. >> reporter: the clinton campaign claimed victory yesterday after the cyber security firm secure works said a g mail account belonging to campaign chair had been hacked

the denver d.a. sent out a press release reminding voters posting selfies with filled in ballots is prohibited. the american civil liberties union calls it a crazy law. >> i thought that issuing that release at this point in time is like a tacit threat to prosecute people for exercising their right to take photographs of themselves with their ballots. >> reporter: the law against showing your vote may have teeth, but >> has anyone ever been prosecuted for this? >> i can't speak for has anyone ever. i'm not aware of any within the last few years. >> reporter: but selling one's vote is usually a matter taken much more seriously than just with a wink and a nod. >> that was rick salinger reporting for us. state senator paul rosenthal has tried multiple times to get the law repealed but so far it's failed.

voting sites are learning something new this year and it has nothing to do with the ballots. they're learning how to different themselves against an active shooter. it was put in place a year and a half ago and not the result of this contentious election. they are required to watch a video that simulates a workplace shooting and they're learning how to protect themselves. >> some wereme back by the video and the graphic images. but i think it's important to at least present that in a training environment so hopefully the shock in the event somebody is put in that type of position is as great. >> denver police as they have in years past are monitoring all 26 polling centers in the city. happy friday, everyone. 43 degrees in denver. coming up next, there are new guidelines when it comes to kids and electronic devices. we'll have the results on this

aurora for us. good morning, shawn. >> reporter: britt, good morning. i'm being told that number just getting updated now to about 23,000 customers according to the xcel energy outage map. behind me we can see really what the problem is and what it's going to continue to be as traffic starts to pick up. behind me darkness really all you can see. this is the intersection of colfax and florence that should be lit up. there should be traffic lights on to help guide traffic, but it's not because of th as i was making my way east on colfax from yosemite, which is where this is starting, we noticed those traffic lights without power, and therefore drivers unsure what to do. should be treating it like a stopsign and stopping for each driver that comes to the intersection and yielding to whoever comes there first. this is likely going to be an issue as we go more cars on the roads. unclear when they'll be able to fix this. we'll remain here and monitor the situation and keep you

cbs4 morning news. >> shawn, thank you so much. we tried calling them and tweeting them, but xcel is probably busy working this. it is opening day on the slopes. the day skiers and boarders have long waited for all summer. expect the office crowd to look a little thinner today. our mountain newsroom reporter matt kroschel is live at a- basin this morning. so glad to see you. >> reporter: hey, britt, we're out here having a great time. we're going to show yo mountain now. it is gorgeous up here. you can see the snow guns are going and so are those snow cats. starting to lighten up. we have a long line of folks enjoying it. we're pretty excited arapahoe basin opening up. i looked through my selfies from last year opening day, and we were at loveland, and i was wearing this same hat. so pretty sure that this is now the official opening day hat for the mountain newsroom.

and lamar you could come close to 80. tomorrow in denver we could come close to 80. here's why. big ridge of high pressure in control of the weather over the west and on the top of that rim we have the jet -- ridge we have the jet stream. since it's going from oregon to kansas and skipping colorado, it's going to deflect storm systems away from us into very early next week. warmer than normal tempur a cold front sitting along the u.s./canadian border. it will move in our direction next week. we don't expect a big time cooldown, but at least the chance for moisture, especially western colorado early next week. we have a small opportunity for rain here in denver next tuesday. it's sunny and dry. tomorrow 80, within 5 degrees of the record.

monday night football. let's get a check on the traffic. >> reporter: here's a look at our cbs4 mousetrap cam. we start to get a few more cars on the road, thankfully in the city no major accidents or stalls to report. here's a look at the drive up and down 225. expect because of that xcel power outage to be some slowdowns on the exits from northbound 225 to alameda, 6th avenue and colfax. expect that in the southbound direction as well. britt, it will take about 3minutes to head southbound >> talking about 23,000 people without power in that area this morning. thank you for that. this is the news in health this morning. ere are some new guidelines for kids behind a screen. new recommendations from pediatricians include parents limiting screen time based on your child's age. f0 for those younger than 18 months avoid it altogether, except for video chatting. r kids 18 to 24 months, parents should choose age appropriate

time of 2 to 5-year-olds to one hour a day, and monitor usage for older children to ensure it doesn't get out of control. a danish study found children born to parents with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder are more likely to experience mental health problems by the time they're seven and they were found more likely to suffer from anxiety, adhd, and other disorders. scientists at northwestern university found muscl their own internal clock that regulates the muscles' metabolism and energy efficiency depending on the time of day. the study finds muscles work best when used during normal waking hours. f0 earlier this week a texas police officer rescued a deer. the deer was tied down at a home under construction and now the two have a budding friendship. >> you're all right.

>> the police officer was there when the deer was united and freed on tuesday. when a tv crew came out to do the story on him, guess who decided to show up? >> that's unacceptable. you can't tie a wild animal up like that. >> reporter: sir, is that him right there. >> as a matter of fact, it is. >> reporter: is that right? >> that's perfect timing right there, isn't it? >> cutest thing. the officer met up with the deer during the interview. watch there, got close enough to even he was last seen trying encourage the deer to go back into the woods. a driver in florida was surprised by an extra passenger on his way into work. tim was sitting in traffic monday morning when a snake slithered out from under the hood of his car. look at this guy. you have to give tim credit for staying calm. he pulled into the parking lot. he did take cell phone video. 6-foot long serpent. he did close the ac vents for good measure.

right over here. if you look at his size, he was longer than the width of my car. in situations like that flipping out is the last thing you want to do. you flip out you're going to run into somebody. >> the snake slithered back down under the hood. tim hopes it got out on its own. he says his girlfriend won't get back in the car. the broncos are off this weekend, but fans are looking forward to the return of osweiler to denver. the broncos and texans n' we're looking ahead. the broncos players have said all week they don't blame brock for taking the money and bolting town, but that doesn't mean they're not going to try to stick it to them. the comments have been pretty tame thus far, except for brandon marshall when he said the broncos are going to try to kill him. apparently brock has been listening. >> seems like they miss me.

noon we'll be at 67. and a high temperature later on of 74 degrees. that's 10 degrees warmer than normal. ten degrees above where we were yesterday. and it's just the start of a warmup that will continue through the weekend. let's get a check on the traffic. here's joe. >> reporter: let's start with trouble, this is southbound i- 25 just after 104th. police are blocking the right lane because of an accident. it's leading to quite a bit of slowdown here, the southbound coming into town you'll see speeds dip into the 20s and 30s. will take 13 minutes to head southbound from 120th to i-70. still have the accident 6th and havana causing delays. thank you. this weekend you can take your little ghouls and goblins to the 32nd annual boo at the zoo. this is a family friendly event under the changing colors of the trees at the zoo. they're offering 25 trick or treat stations and it's all
