good morning, everyone. this is the news at 6:00. here's a live look in aurora. this morning over 27,000 xcel customers were without power in aurora. that number has dwindled a little bit. we'll be live with shawn next out there on the streets. that's okay, shawn. traffic lights aut that area. here we are, friday, october 21st. and ski season starts today. here's a live look at a-basin where the skiers and boarders are already lined up this morning. matt kroschel has the tough assignment and he's live coming up. a day after their final debate, donald trump and hillary clinton exercise some standup comedy skills as they poke fun at each other at a charity dinner.

from morning ton to denver. highway 36 east, east and westbound 270, and westbound i- 76 nice and wide open. i'll give you the reason why there's that slowdown on southbound i-25 coming up. thanks so much. let's get back to this breaking news. xcel's outage map shows 18,000 people now without power and they are working to restore it. they're trying to get it done by 6:30, 7:00 this morning. cbs4's shawn chitness is along colfax and florence for us that area, shawn. >> reporter: yeah, britt, they were out for about an hour at least and it was an eerie scene to see no light on the businesses, street lights as well as the traffic lights. glad to report at least at this intersection along colfax the power is back on. but still quite a few people who need to get their power back, we've been reporting that number as high as 27,000, now around 18,000. we're getting told by xcel
6:03 am
this went out just before 4:00 a.m. and they are working to get it back. they're not sure exactly when they can open up. they said something happened at a sub station and that's causing this outage. 8,000 customers without power restored already. probably another 18,000 that still need to have their power restored. it will happen in sections because of how large this is. they'll be working to get different areas back on the grid. we're told the ar affected from colfax to alameda and yosemite to sable. we're basically in the northwest corner of where all this is happening. they have an estimate maybe when they'll have this back, hopefully by 6:30 or 7:00. intersections like this, they would be a trouble spot if they didn't have the power running, as drivers are confused when at the don't see the traffic lights on. hopefully that comes back on sooner rather than later.

far eastern plains. we're abnormally dry or predrought in the front range mountains and foothills and across southern colorado. we are here at lake dillon reservoir to give you a view of the water. when we talk about the drought that's currently in place, this is a meteorological drought or short-term deficit in precipitation and that has more of an impact on growing, not the water supply. you can see the reservoir here full, not quite, but pretty high for this time of the year. at 89% storage capacity. f0 normally they would be at 86%. we are in good shape. but it's the mountains behind me that will tell the tale as we go into the weeks ahead. definitely need a good year of mountain snowfall to ensure good water supplies for the year ahead. for now, conserve where you can and hope the snow comes this winter. on lake dillon, meteorologist chris spears. f0 >> such a great point.

i've seen what can happen as the result of hate. my son matt was murdered in laramie, wyoming, in 1998. he was befriended by two men in a bar who pretended to be gay. they offered him a ride home, and when he was in their car, they robbed him and beat him. they drove matt out to the prairie and tied him to a split-rail fence, then beat him some more and left him for dead. in the aftermath of matt's death, my family saw the best of america in the love and support we were shown. so when i see the hate that donald trump has brought to his campaign for president, it terrifies me. i'd like to punch him in the face, i'll tell ya. ahh, i don't know what i said, uhh, i don't remember. he's a mexican. i could stand in the middle of fifth avenue and shoot somebody, and i wouldn't... words have an influence. violence causes pain. hate can rip us apart. i know what can happen as the result of hate,
