out on the streets. today jury selection begins. we are live at the jefferson county justice center. and i understand this could be a lengthy trial. >> reporter: this will be a lengthy trial. today is only day one. 200 people have been summoned for jury selection. that's a process that's going on as we speak. it will last through end of the day and continue n into tomorrow. the trial -- continue into tomorrow. the triait here is why. not only are there three defendants but the crime spree left a trail of victims, who have been subpoenaed as witnesses. bank surveillance video shows the suspects robbing a bank last fall. it ended with a chase, two carjackings and two people shot. the video is key to this case. the prosecution has looked at the mannerisms of the suspects to dna analysis on the clothing and the masks.

arguments around witness accounts and said it's not clear who the men in the masks actually. the three men face dozens of charges including robbery, kidnapping and attempted murder. there are six weeks slated for the trial right now. so december 6th is the last day that the jury is asked to slate their schedules for. opening arguments in this case are expected to begin monday courthouse, cbs 4 news. >> thank you for that. developing now, police are investigating the drowning of a toddler in lakewood. the 18-month-old girl was with her grandparents on west louisiana. the grandparents were doing yard work when the girl apparently wandered to a neighbor's home and fell into a pond. the neighbor's quickly pulled her out but that girl died. even though there is an investigation, police say they

second lawsuit involving the parents of dylan redwine. he is the 13-year-old boy who disappeared in november 2012. his remains were found months later in southwest colorado. a judge dismissed the lawsuit. his father mark redwined filed against his mother on monday. he accused her of intentionally inflecting emotional distress. last year, a the lawsuit making those allegations. and now we move on to campaign 2016. republican donald trump stepped out of his political role and back into business mode. and democrat hillary clinton is celebrating her birthday in florida. craig boswell reports from trump's newest hotel. >> reporter: donald trump cut the ribbon on his brand new luxury hotel here in washington, d.c. >> we built one of the great real estate companies of the world. but it seems very insignificant

>> reporter: the event was supposed to be a corporate event but quickly transitioned into campaign rhetoric. donald trump linked hillary clinton to the rising insurance premiums under obamacare. >> remember hillary said herself, it was called hillarycare before it was called obamacare. >> reporter: the morning ceremony at trump international hotel provided a stage for protesters. trump's new hotel is less than a mile from the white house but the route from here to the oval office could go through florida. hiy stops in florida today where she is urging supporters to take advantage of early voting. >> oh, i i love your signs. that's great. vote early, florida, that's great. >> reporter: the latest poll in florida shows trump edging ahead of clinton but the two- point lead is within the survey's margin of error. >> florida can make the difference and if people get out and vote, we will have a victory on november 8th. >> reporter: clinton's staff

celebrate her 69th birthday. craig boswell, cbs news, washington. check this out. repairs are being made to donald trump's star on the hollywood walk of fame. his name and star were destroyed apparently with a sledge hammer or some sort of tool like that. trump received the star in 2007 for the apprentice. deadline reports a man identifying himself as jamie otis planned to remove the star completely and then auction it off to raise funds for women who have accused trump of sexual assault. when he couldn't do that, he apparently decided to smash it. the trump campaign continues to focus on colorado. mike pence will be in colorado springs this evening and eric trump will return for another day of campaigning tomorrow. he will be in colorado springs during the day and here in the metro area in the evening. conservative senator ted cruz is also in colorado today. he is campaigning for republican senate challenger

morning. they'll also campaign in denver this afternoon. we will have much more on those visits on cbsdenver.com and you will find the profiles of the senate candidates. michael bennett and daryl glenn, that is all in the campaign 2016 section if you would like to read that. new developments as the pentagon is ordered to suspend efforts to make members of the national bonuses. we explain the about-face comes after congressional outrage. >> reporter: defense secretary carter announced a pause in the pentagon's effort to collect bonuses that were improperly given to some california national guard members writing while some soldiers should have known they were ineligible, many did not. we will provide a process that puts as little burden as

received an improper payment through no false of his or her own. soldiers were offered inseptemberrives to reenlist including bonuses and student loan forgiveness. they asked 6500 california guard soldiers for repayments. the guard says about $22 million has been collected so far from 2,000 soldiers. >> it's dumbfounding. >> reporter: robert richman debt to credit agencies. >> it was betrayal. i want to resolve it for every soldier that's got that letter. >> reporter: house speaker paul ryan called it an injustice. the house oversight committee announced an investigation and congress the promising to pass legislation to help. the pentagon's decisions on each case are due in july. cbs news, new york. only in colorado maybe,

and roaming. a semi-truck crashed at the georgetown exit. 20 of them are still free this afternoon. we are back at the scene for us. and matt, there's a sad ending for one. we understand a cow was killed overnight. >> reporter: yeah, georgetown police telling us that they responded last night here to i- 70 where an rv struck one of the cows, killed it. no injuries to the people but definitely a mess. and right now, cdot has signs up that possible on the highway. here in georgetown, reports from all over town coming in to the police telling them that there are cows wandering in people's yards. right now, about 20 wandering. here's some video from this morning that shows a few of those run-aways near i-70. and that video definitely showing how close they are to the road there, just outside of the town of georgetown. the police chief telling me that right now, a posse is

reaching record territory. >> tomorrow and friday, the records for both days are in jeopardy. we will challenge the records indeed with this warm october weather, dry, of course as well. as we look live at mile high. not really a cloud in the sky. this is the way it's going to stay through the day. warming up quickly downtown. in fact, almost at 70 degrees. the temperature outside cbs 4 right now. so far this month, our average high has been 73 normal. that may not sound like a lot but from a climate standpoint, that's a huge value. our overnight lows have averaged 41. that's three degrees above normal. and precipitation has been below normal by about .50. if the month were to end today, this would be the fifth warmest october on record but with warmer temperatures tomorrow and friday, we may rank as third, fourth. we will see what happens. 50s in the mountains.

plains. temperatures this afternoon will top out in the 60s for the mountain locations. and close to 80 for the eastern plains. yesterday at this time, we were talking about cloud cover over colorado. all that has moved out. you can see some clouds to the north of us. it looks like they're moving in our direction but a big ridge of high pressure centered over the rocky mountain region is going to prevent. so we will see sunshine through the weekend. meanwhile the system in colorado yesterday now moving through the midwest. rain for chicago, down toward oklahoma. in fact, this line making its way toward cleveland, ohio. and that's why they moved game two of the world series up by about an hour tonight as they anticipate the rain moving into northern ohio. back here in colorado, 74 degrees in denver today. tomorrow, 80. there's the record. 80 set back in 1966. record on friday, also 80 degrees. we have 81 in the forecast. for the weekend, mid-70s for saturday and sunday. looks terrific for the broncos

a consumer alert now about what could be a citrus shortage. say that three times fast. a tiny green bug is threatening the orange groves in florida. the bug carries a disease from china known as greening and it appeared in 2005 and has now infected 90% of the trees. florida produces more oranges than any country in the world except brazil. but now production is plummeting. that has scientists racing to
