it is fall right now. the temperature outside is 48 degrees. >> i know, you have to wonder what in the world is going on. ashton altieri is in colorado's weather center and we are close to record-breaking heat you say? >> later today. it was on this date 50 years ago we climbed to 80 degrees. it was october 27, 1966. that's the warmest we've ever been on this date and i think we'll get warmer than that this afternoon with a high of at least we'll check your fiveday4cast which includes more warmth after today, coming up. now let's get a check on the traffic. overnight construction along c-470 to the south of 285. our big story is this traffic alert. lane closures northbound along wadsworth and bayoud because of a water main break. it's where we find our jamie leary this morning. this will cause traffic delays, because even though there's no water pouring out, there's a lot of work they have to do.

unintentional construction that will have to happen this morning. i talked to colorado department of transportation. their traffic management center. they did confirm that they believe this is fixed right now. but you can see there's two lanes on northbound wadsworth that are closed. it goes all the way between 1st and bayoud. this is going to be a big project they have to tackle this morning. if you can imagine the amount of equipment they have to get out. they still have to fill that hole and they have to pave it. cdot's traffic management center told me they believe that's going to last through rush hour. that's not hard to believe with the equipment they'll have to drag out to address that situation. unintentional construction. plan for more time getting to work if this is your route. we're going to keep an eye on the situation and look for more details. live in lakewood, jamie leary, cbs4 morning news. is it a case of neglectful parents that left a girl

combine to make the girl a victim? a trial is set today in fort collins today against these parents. investigators found the 7-year- old girl malnourished unable walk and talk, suffering from seizures. the dyers said they stopped taking her to doctors when she was 3 because they didn't have a working car and didn't want to ask for help. the trained, the house was filthy. both are accused of child abuse. parents of a teenage boy with special needs are set to appear before a judge in longmont today also for child abuse charges. we first told you about vanessa and david hall last month. officials say their 17-year- old, who is blind and autistic was malnourished.

10 minutes on the 4s coming up. ashton altieri is with us this morning, all week long he's been telling us about heat. >> denver's weather records go back 144 years. that makes it difficult sometimes to get a record, considering how many years of records we now have. but it's never been warmer than 80 on this date and i think it will be coming up this afternoon. 46 where we're at now. sun will be up at 7:23 this morning. just like yesterday, we'll see a lot of sunshine for denver, th plains, the high country and the western slope. state-wide sunshine today. though we have a few clouds on the western slope now. you can see that from craig and meeker into the san juan mountains. they won't last all day. 9:00a.m., 55. by noon, 74. there it is, 81 and assuming we get there, that will be a new record for the date. tomorrow another record high expected. we'll talk about that and how the broncos' forecast plus the outlook for halloween, it's all

we need two wins in a row. two records and two wins. i-70, i-270, an accident off to the shoulder, and it's not causing any delays. look at all the volume we have starting to build through commerce city. that's right along i-70, i-270. we've got a little trouble as you head just to the north of i- 76 along sheridan there where they continue to do road work. it's there at ralston, the intersection, off. c-470 at 285 as they continue to do paving operations. we saw jamie reporting from the water main break, northbound along wadsworth. expect a couple of lanes to be closed this morning. probably better to take kipling or sheridan if you come up on it. take alameda and head to kidnap i think or -- kipling. here we are under two weeks just out from the election. where does colorado sit when it

sons is back in colorado to push his father's campaign. we know thousands have already cast their votes here in the state. shawn chitness has those numbers for us live from the state capitol. good morning. >> reporter: britt, good morning. we can tell that both campaigns take colorado seriously by sending important members of their campaigns to our state on a regular basis. we're going to see that again today. we're also getting a sense of where early voting is, and while colorado is considered a ba is tipping toward one candidate over the other, at least so far. tonight donald trump's son, eric, is going to be in the state. he will be speaking at colorado christian university in lakewood, trying to get out the vote for his father, as well as rallying with veterans in the area. that event starts at 6:00 p.m. it's the latest member of the trump family and that campaign visiting our state. mike pence was in colorado springs just yesterday. this week the trump campaign

is still a battleground state up for grabs, which is what some news organizations say. but there are others that show the campaign or at least the state of colorado is tilting towards hillary clinton. clinton was last in the state at the beginning of the month, but her campaign has also sent some of her top supporters to colorado to help get out the vote. so let's take a look at the numbers released from the secretary of state that show more than 400,000 votes so far, again this is in early voting, democre point with that trend continuing from earlier in the week. they have more than 166,000 votes. and the republicans have a little more than 141,000 votes. again, we're going to get that daily snapshot from the secretary of state's office each day as we approach closer to election day. live at the state capitol, shawn chitness, cbs4 morning news. thank you. donald trump is going after price hikes in obamacare and

a poll out shows clinton with a 9-point lead over trump. shepoints to his trouble with female troubles. hillary clinton is in north carolina today with the first lady. yesterday she slammed donald trump for taking time off the campaign trail to attend the opening of his new hotel near the white house. trump fired back saying he could take a day off and clinton stays home more does. new wikileaks e-mails show clinton's tom aides worried foreign donations to the clinton foundation and bill clinton, and shows aides being concerned how they were handling the hacked e-mails. two men now under arrest, accused in the break-in at the apartment of broncos'

science exam were up 4 points in grades 4 through 8, compared to 2009. the national assessment of educational progress released today shows only about a third of 4th and 8th graders demonstrated strong academic performance on the subject. team in washington is in the process of making a 3-d scan of the space shuttle going to take them between five and 10,000 pictures. the project will detail the entire shuttle. >> the goal of this project is to document this object using 3- d measurement tools and deliver that to the public, so schools can 3-d print this object, they can view it online, and they'll also be able to view it in virtual reality. >> the team expects to finish scanning by next summer.

it's time for weather and traffic on the 4s. welcome back to the cbs4 morning news. yesterday we topped out at 75 behind our 72 that we had back on tuesday. today we soar up to 81 as we've been talking about, if we go there it will be -- if we get there it will be a record. i think we'll at least get to 81. record is 80. tomorrow and saturday temperatures back down into the 70s by the time we get into the weekend. right now we're in the 40s all arou d fort collins areas. 46 dia. 48 in boulder and 42 in fort collins. greeley you're cooler, you're at 34. limon at 29. in some areas you have to bundle up this morning. later on today it will be warm from the western slope to the eastern plains. everybody will be above normal. 73 in grand junction this afternoon. how about 84 down in lamar? that should be one of the warmest spots in the state.

on. doppler 4000 is showing a few clouds in the western slope. as the sun comes up we'll see the clouds start to dissipate. big ridge of high pressure firmly in control of our weather, now out in california they're getting a lot of rain and sierra nevada mountains, including lake tahoe they'll see a lot of snow. this is where the jet stream is and the jet stream of course steers storm systems. normally this time of year the jet is eiov instead, it's in northern wyoming. and that is why we are so warm and why we'll stay so warm because this weather pattern won't change through at least the beginning of next week. your forecast today, 81 followed by 82 tomorrow. and 75 on saturday. 76 for the broncos game sunday. it will be a lot warmer here than in san diego. in fact, it will be raining in san diego sunday, while we enjoy beautiful sunshine here. halloween high of 70.

and 60s. joel. not too bad. live pictures from our photojournalist eddie castro, northbound along wadsworth at bayoud. water main break overnight. the water is stopped, but they have a lot of work to do. you have all the cones up and that makes it brutal for folks. northbound along wadsworth will be a mess take alameda. trouble spot in the eastbound direction of i-70 and i-270. earlier accident along i-270 has been cleared out of the way. a lot of the overnight cones have been moved out of the way as well. the drive times northbound along i-225, speeds into the 60s. speeds in the 50s and 60s both directions along i-70 between i- 25 and i-225. thank you.

earthquakes yesterday. they shook that portion of the country. no reports of deaths and few serious injuries afterwards. but power was knocked out and you can see panicked people ran out into the streets. many buildings were destroyed. hundreds of people are now out of their homes. emergency crews are working on clearing roads and cleaning up debris today. we have new video the aftermath of a landslide that killed at least six people in colombia. this destroyed a mine when it rescuers are still searching that area for victims today. six miners are still unaccounted for. a developing story out of lakewood where a toddler drowned in a small back yard pond yesterday. police say the 18-month-old girl was with her grandfather while he was doing yard work and they say the little girl likely wandered to the neighbor's yard, then fell into that pond. another neighbor pulled the girl out, but it was too late.

still on the lam after a crash. the cowboys were out there. cdot had cowboys corral the livestock. volunteers set out to recapture nearly 20 of the original 80 cattle when the big rig flipped. six of the cows died in that crash, and others escaped. a bear in boulder spent much tree. animal control officers kept an eye on the bear, but said they would wait until it came down on its own. you can enter to win tickets to see roger waters. cbs4 has 10 pairs of tickets to gave away and one grand prize, which includes dinner and an uber to the show, plus an upgrade to the best seats in the house. that concert, june 3rd at the

not even be available in the open market, especially when it comes to disability and long- term care insurance. both of those are expensive when you purchase them on your own. the most important thing to determine is whether that coverage is portable. that means you can take the policy with you if you leave the company. for retirement, more than half of large employers are offering roth 401(k)s. 10% of employees are using them. roth s for those who expect their tax brackets to rise in the future, like a young 20 something employee. they're also terrific for higher income employees, because they're not subject to minimum distribution requirements after age 70 and a half. >> we expect there are some lesser known benefits as well. can you talk about some of those? >> reporter: absolutely. only 5% of employees use stress and mental health counseling

assistance programs. they're paying for these things out of their pocket or through their insurance, but the reason that people aren't using them is kind of a bummer. people don't think they're confidential, but they are. they have privacy protections under hippa. a lot of people think they have to ask permission from the company, but that is not a necessary requirement. or worse, they don't know these services exist. another valuable benefit going unused is company reimbursement for conditioning education expenses. we always talk about how an undergraduate degree or graduate or even a certificate can help you earn more over your lifetime. we're not using this. the reason, time commitment is a biggie, but also a lot of employers require that in order to get tuition reimbursement you have to at least earn a b. come on, guys, you can get a b. >> yes, you can. you can do it.

this morning. >> reporter: i want to show you what's going on now as traffic is starting to pick up now. we're near bayoud and 1st on wadsworth. there's a point where cars are having to merge on northbound wadsworth and i saw an accident almost having. they're having difficulties merging because they're coming down so fast. two lanes currently on wadsworth northbound blocked off. i talked to the traffic management center at cdot, and they said break is actually fixed, but they still have to fill a hole and continue paving this morning. while the colorado traffic management center for cdot isn't actually on the ground, they said they do anticipate this is going to last well through rush hour. you can imagine the equipment they'll have to bring out here. we're going to keep an eye on this and try to figure out how long this will impact your traffic, morning commute. they definitely told me to plan
