suicidal man. that man opened fire, critically injuring a deputy. the district attorney has cleared the officer who fired the fatal shot. jamie leary joins us live from the parker police department. we really see how chaotic that shooting scene was in this video. >> reporter: very chaotic. you can see officers running towards the shooting suspect. the video you're about to see is from the perspective of parker police officer ronnie durell. he fired killed suspect randy roddick, bringing his shooting spree to a halt. >> where is he at? >> front seat. i got him, he's down. >> reporter: that brief muffleed pop was the fatal shot. it's force the district attorney's office determined was justified. >> to know there is an officer down, to know people are being shot at and this guy is armed

picture, slow your breathing and pull that trigger one time and end this thing, that is an amazing shot. >> reporter: investigators say roddick was using a fully automatic ak-47, firing shots at officers and bystanders, all unfolding north of sierra mill school. rod-- middle school. roddick had a shotgun, handgun and thousands of rounds of in his vehicle. in his house, a secret room that opened to a guns and ammo room. >> what if this guy's wife had not alerted law enforcement to his behavior and what he was doing? law enforcement wasn't able to try to keep him in this very small area as he loaded his rv full of all of these implements of death? >> reporter: a couple of the

narrowly missing staff. it was a miracle the detective was the only one injured. we got an update today, police say he's doing well and improving every single day. live from the parker police department, jamie leary, cbs4 news. wow. jamie, thank you very much. that injured officer dan brite is at craig hospital where he's getting rehab. e continue to go out to him. his family has thanked everyone. crews in the city of denver were cleaning out as the homeless have returned to an encampment where they were moved out of earlier this year. cbs4's rick salinger covered the sweep this morning. he is live now and rick, are they being removed this time around? >> reporter: no, they aren't. the strategy is different this time around than it was last

to outcries and lawsuits. this time around the city says it is to try to deal with the public health risk. crews from the city department of public works are coming out here daily now with garbage trucks trying to remove debris. the sheriff's department and denver police were here as well. they spoke to the homeless people about keeping the area clean, but did not remove them. a spokesperson for the city department of human services told us the people camped out he right to be in the city. they are thinking about how to deal with these encampments on a case by case basis. those we spoke with said they prefer to be out here than in the shelters. >> then as you're going in there you have to play a ridiculous game with these, the followers in the name sake of jesus, just --

dia up to 76. it's 74 in parker. upper 60s and lower 70s in the foothills. even the mountains will have an unusually warm late october day. we're almost at 60 currently in aspen. 64 grand junction. 75 on eastern plains at limon. this is a state-wide late october heat wave for us. aspen's forecast, 67. record for today, 68. all of these areas, colorado springs, fort collins, will be cl temperatures today. grand junction should set a new record. so will lamar in southeast colorado. again, alan, it's not just us in denver. everybody in colorado is far above normal. we'll talk about when things could change a little bit. full fiveday4cast is coming up. >> ashton, thanks a lot. crews are assessing the damage after a pair of earthquakes hit central italy. badly damaged buildings that survived another quake in

there are amazingly no reports of anybody getting killed or seriously injured this time around. as strong as the quakes are, they're considered aftershocks to the august quake. another round of e-mails in campaign 2016 news today. they're once again from hillary clinton's campaign. cbs4's craig boswell has details on what they reveal and donald trump's response. >> reporter: hacked e-mails from hillary cln raising more questions about payments made to the clinton foundation. wikileaks published a 12 page memo from doug band where he says he pushed corporations who donated to the fundation, to provide in-kind services for the president and his family. donald trump has long accused the clinton foundation of being a slush fund for the former

voting numbers continue to add up in colorado. as of this morning the state received more than 575,000 ballots. democrats continue to outpace republicans in the early voting. remember, in colorado you can register to vote and vote right up to and including election day. we have a lot of resources to help you make sure your vote counts with the links you'll find in our campaign 2016 section of cbsdenver.com. new information about the two menacered for burglarizing billy mccaslin and sergio irreza will be in court at 1:30 this afternoon. hidden cameras in ware's home showed the men burglarizing his home monday evening during the game. about 36 hours later, denver police made the arrests after a number of tips sent to crimestoppers. for ware, it's just one more example of the power of the 12th man in denver.

let's go back to ashton and talk about the heat. i don't know what else we can say about this. what we can say is it's unprecedented. i don't like to throw that word out there that often. but we have records going back 144 years and we've never been warmer than 80 on this date. i think this afternoon we'll be higher than 80. we have record high on forecast. here's an area you're familiar with alan, genesee, evergreen parkway, 69 degrees. like august. usually have a little bit of snow perhaps on the higher peaks there, but nothing as of now. our normal high temperature at the end of the month, 61. the record for this date is 80. last set 50 years ago, 1966. today we expect to reach at least 81. tomorrow will be warmer than today. and tomorrow's record is also 80. that one set in 1994. it looks like we're going to have two records in a row, today and tomorrow. temperatures are already well

denver area. look at lamar, almost at 80 now. 50s in the colorado high country. 60s on the western slope. we're going to see record highs not only here in denver, but really around the state. records could fall out west, could fall on the eastern plains, colorado springs could have a record today with a high of 77. fort collins about 79. i think that is your record for today in fort collins. very, very close, if not actual record heat. meanwhile, to the west of us we're watching clouds in nevada and utah but they're heading to look at all this rain. wouldn't it be nice if this were in our state? northern california needs the moisture as well and they're going to get it. sierra nevada mountains around lake tahoe could get a foot of snow. it's all because of the jet stream, normally this time of year it's either over colorado or nearby. now it's in southern montana for our region and it's why we're so warm. this pattern, by the way, will stay in place through sunday,

new home. he's one affectionate guy. miles loves people. he would do best in a home where he's the only cat and no dogs. if you'd like to make him a part of your home, visit him in person at the dumb friends league. whole lot of cat right there. he's at the buddy shelter south of castle rock down there south of the outlet mall. saturday through monday, there is no cost to adopt cats one and older. that's milo. our tom mustin went to squaw mess to check out the mess and cleanup. reporter: it's one of colorado's scenic highways. now squaw pass road is being tarnished. >> you think what a beautiful road, until you go over to the side of a parking area and look down over the embankment and see the garbage. >> reporter: resident tim eagan noticed the problem a few weeks ago when he and his wife pulled over to look at the view.

and it was full of garbage. i just thought, you know what, i can't let this lie. >> reporter: wednesday, he and his fellow rotary members organized a cleanup of the areas with volunteers and police, fire and forest service members. together, they collected truck loads of debris. >> we had a refrigerator, sofas, shutters from a house, remnants of carpeting, bottles, cans, food items. you name it. of commerce president betsy hayes says those who are caught dumping face a heavy penalty. >> this is not okay. when you cross the line into clear creek county, it's a thousand-dollar fine. >> reporter: it could also include 30 days in jail. with the litter growing, tim has a message. >> we all live here for the beauty of colorado, and to see something like that that is totally disrespectful for where
