for early voting. voters in 34 states including colorado already casting ballots. here in colorado a new ad accuses congressional candidate morgan carroll of being soft on sex offenders. carroll is challenging mike coffman in the district. shaun boyd gives the ad a reality check. >> reporter: you may remember the ad about welfare for strip clubs. the same group that brought you that, the national republi claims democrat morgan carroll supports leniency for sex offenders. >> the only senator to vote against tougher penalties for child penalties using the internet. >> that's true but this one needs context. at issue is a 2009 bill that made internet sexual exploitation of a child a felony in colorado. carroll voted for the bill in committee. it's after it was amended that she voted against it on the

>> morgan carroll, what was she thinking? >> carroll's campaign said it wasn't the bill but the amendment she opposed on procedural grounds. she believed they violated a constitutional requirement that bills be about a single subject. one of the amendments made failure to register as a sex offender a more serious felony. the other restricted kids' access to sexually explicit material. whatever the reason for her opposition, apparently no one else shared again, she was the lone no vote. but you should know the amendments were ultimately stripped from the bill when it went back to the house and carroll voted for it. the ad doesn't stop there. >> carroll even voted against having convicted sex offenders register their e-mail addresses and online user names, making it harder to track online child predators. >> this is also true. the ad references two bills, both from 2007.

offenders to register all their e-mail addresses, instant messaging identities, and chat room identities with law enforcement. and they made it a felony to give false information. carroll voted against both bills. arguing they didn't do enough to verify that the e-mails sex offenders provided were actually theirs and not someone else's. bottom line, whatever morgan carroll was thinking when she cast these votes, it likely wasn't about running for congress in one of the most competitive country. any vote that makes it appear right or wrong that you're not tough on sex offenders is prime for an attack ad. i'm shaun boyd. that's reality check. >> you can see all of shaun's sources and reality check stories by going to cbsdenver.com. the feds infiltrate a criminal organization behind the irs phone scam. >> prosecutors indicted 61 people in the u.s. and abroad

get money from victims. kenneth craig reports. >> i was here alone and he says to me, this is the irs. >> reporter: that's how the nightmare began for mary ann, a long island grandmother scammed out of nearly $100,000 by someone claiming to be with the irs. the fake agent told her that her grown son with special needs hadn't paid taxes in a decade and if he didn't pay, he'd be thrown in jail. >> he said don't call anybody because your house is bugged. >> reporter: authorities say the scammers are mostly targeting the elderly and immigrants by conning them to pay with prepaid debit cards and wire transfers and federal investigators say she's not alone. >> many of us have received these phone calls ourselves. >> on thursday the department of justice announced a major break with the indictment of 61 individuals and entities. >> we seek to profit by exploiting some of the most

community. >> reporter: half of the defendants are from overseas and allegedly tied to a network of call centers in india. in the u.s. police are rounding up the suspects criminals in nine states who they say left a trail of 15,000 victims who lost more than $300 million. the indictments won't return victims' money, but authorities say they hope to send a message to the criminals that they're taking action. kenneth craig, cbs news, new york. >> officials say got from data brokers, social media, and other sources to target their victims. a doctor's treatment for vertigo helping people way beyond colorado. >> why she's so happy her remedy has now gone viral. >> just a few clouds drifting across the state today. didn't stop us from having a record high. we'll have another one tomorrow

powerful aftershocks continuing to hit central italy today. >> amazingly no reports of deaths. this is the same region where a massive earthquake killed nearly 300 people in august. right now we have the news from around the world for you. while there are no casualties, there is a lot of damage. strongest aftershocks hit late last night reducing the 15th century church to rubble. power is knocked out and that sent panicked residents running in to the streets. good thing they got out of those buildings that collapsed. dozens of people do have minor injuri injuries. an afghan woman featured in an iconic photograph has been arrested. she was 12 and living in a refugee camp when a photographer took this photo of her. now in her 40s, she was arrested in pakistan for falsifying documents and staying illegally in the country. if convicted she could go to jail for 14 years. a california daredevil stunt goes terribly wrong and lands him in the hospital.

2:00 and you see partly cloudy skies along the front range and yes, we're going to stay warm again with temperatures right back in the 70s. we have cooler air in to the northeast and as a result we have snow in portions of canada, western new york state, also in vermont, new hampshire, and massachusetts. saw snow today so they had to cool air coming down there. we have the return flow from the warm air pushing up in to our area. how warm was it? phoenix got to 100 degrees today and that pushed warm air in to our area so you've got the w air. you've got the record temperatures. let's go to lauren in the colorado weather center. that just can't be good news. you've got proof. >> our new drought monitor came out today and it has expanded quite a bit from last week. last week about 48% of the state was under a drought. this time this week we've upped it to about 65% and the big area that's now under this drought for the abnormally low area is out in to the eastern plains so pretty much that northeastern component of the state is under the drought or obnormally dry

parts of larimer county, rocky mountain national park, red feather lakes, they're under the moderate area. it's increasing in spots all the way down south of denver as well. the area in the moderate, that's actually almost doubled from last month from about 3.5% to almost 6%. it's expanding and our dry conditions are really going to continue for the next couple of days and ed, that even could mean more record breaking heat tomorrow. >> more record breaking heat after we had it today. 83 at d.i.a. officially. the so we broke it pretty handily. 83 downtown. should be at 61 degrees this time of year. start out in the mid 40s. should be in the low 30s. 76 and 70 right now. southeast 10 for the winds. still dry. 12% humidity. we have a falling barometer. pretty shot here from sherry thomas, buena vista of sunrise. take a look at this sunrise from carol mckinney, red rocks park. mostly in the 40s for the
