breaking news from the campaign trail today. i'm alan gionet. we have just learned the fbi is investigating new e-mail found on hillary clinton's private server. the head of the fbi sent a letter to congress this morning about the new investigation. that letter refers to recent developments in the investigation. it says in connection with an unrelated case, the fbi learned

of secretary of state clinton's e-mail server. after meeting with the investigative team, comey says the e-mails should be reviewed to see if they have classified information. he wrote he can not predict how long that investigation would take, but fell it was important to update the committees. so far we have not heard from the clinton campaign on this and it comes in the wake of the release of clinton campaign e- mails from wikileaks. republican donald trump ys cbs's craig boswell has details on the e-mails. >> reporter: donald trump is on the attack saying hillary and bill clinton used their service in public office to get rich. >> hillary clinton put the office of secretary of state up for sale and if she got the chance, she'd put the oval office up for sale. >> reporter: hacked e-mails show bill clinton's aide, doug

brain cancer last year. >> you can continue to follow the developments related to that new fbi investigation into hillary clinton's private server and e-mails streaming on cbsn and you can find it through cbsnews.com. a corvette slammed into a pole closing an intersection during rush hour this morning. our jamie leary is back at the scene as we the scene is finally cleared, jamie? >> reporter: finally cleared after hours of investigation. this was a high speed crash. you can see the skid marks behind me. around 2:00 a.m. or after that the corvette lost control, careened into this light pole which had to be removed, then it caught fire. you can see the burn mark here, trapping the passenger inside. looking at the damage, it's surprising that anybody could survive this crash. police say the driver actually got out of the car and tried to

custody not far from the crash. he was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. his passenger wasn't as lucky. it took close to an hour to cut him out of the car. we're told he's in the hospital in critical condition. the accident closed a portion of southbound santa fe for hours. as traffic picked up, the scene distracted many commuters. an officer was attempting to cross the road with her lights on, so traffic stopped for her, with the exception of one the officer was okay, but the driver who hit her car was taken to the hospital. this crash was cleared quickly. it took much longer to tow the corvette. there's currently an ongoing criminal investigation. after speaking with littleton police this afternoon, they tell me this is a felony criminal investigation because of the number of factors involved, the high rate of speed, serious bodily injury

the scene. they're trying to determine if alcohol and drugs also played a role. live in littleton, jamie leary, cbs4 news. >> jamie, thanks a lot. denver police are sorting through conflicting stories about how a man ended up shot in the leg in an suv, then five people, including that injured person, were in the suv that ran a red light at 11th and kalamath this morning. it hit a car and the suv rolled. everybody in the suv and the driver of the car taken to the hospital. nobody including the shooting victim has life-threatening injuries. originally we were told that person shot, or that shot was fired by a man in a white pickup. new developments in the death of a toddler in cheyenne. police have arrested a man and now say they will wait until monday to search a landfill north of greeley. it's where they hope to find

boy. cbs4's dillon thomas live greeley now. >> reporter: authorities in colorado continue to look for the missing body of the 13- month-old child. in wyoming police say they have a suspect in custody who they say took responsibility of disposing of that child's body. that man is 23-year-old logan hunter rogers. he's behind bars and he's the mother's boyfriend and is facing charges of police say the boy had been missing since saturday when his grandfather called 911 to report it. when investigators questioned the mother, she claimed the boyfriend had given the child to a man named santiago to go fishing. nobody could answer who he was or even his last name. rogers eventually told his he was the only one home when the child died and dumped the child

neighbors tell us they were left in shock. >> it's something you read in crime stories and stuff like that. it's not something you expect to happen in your hometown. >> reporter: police tell us they will continue to search for that little boy's body on monday at that dump in alt, colorado. as for rogers, he's expected to make his first court appearance later today in wyoming. in cheyenne, wyom weather alert as we reach out for another possible heat record. firefighters jumped on a fire at e-470 and i-70 about 7:30 this morning. state patrol says a hit cigarette thrown into that median there caused the fire, showing just how dangerous the conditions are right now. meteorologist ashton altieri is in colorado's weather center. we're warming into the upper 70s.

77 degrees. there was some concern about all this cloud cover we have today and if that was going to keep temperatures down. so far that's not been the case. downtown 75. you can see a little bit of clearing. these are mountain wave clouds and also just a cirrus deck on top of us. same thing in the high country. this isn't just the front range. most of the state is covered with cloud cover. it's 66 now up the hill in genesee. the clouds will stick around through the afternoon. again, there will be enough clearing that i think temperatures will be able to soar in denver, boulder and fort collins areas. record for today is 80. we had 83 in the forecast. that's where we reached to yesterday and i think we'll do it again today. two record highs back to back here. by 5:00 p.m. we'll be at 77. by 9:00 tonight down to around 60 with that partial clearing as we progress through this afternoon. coming up we'll take a look at the weekend forecast and show you the trick or treat outlook for monday night straight ahead. >> i think we're going to have a treat there. developing story is the

considering suing police, after officers shot and killed her dog. officers say the shooting was self-defense, but the owner is not buying it. that was the dog's dying moments there. our stan bush shares two very different versions of what happened here. >> there they go. oh, my god. jesus. >> reporter: panic on 911, when neighbors at this complex see a woman surrounded by two aggressive dogs. >> we got two pit bulls on one has attacked somebody. please, hurry, hurry, hurry. >> reporter: police say when an officer approached the larger of the two dogs growled, taking an aggressive stance. >> for a seasoned officer to say he's never seen dogs as as aggressively it should come with some crazience he knows -- credence he knows what he's talking about. >> reporter: the owner had to put her dog down from his

there. we'll be dry here for the weekend. a lot of questions here today about whether it's going to rain today. it will not, even though it looks like it might outside. take a look at this in the foothills, mountain wave clouds, cbs viewer judi getting the pictures of those clouds this morning. we appreciate her sending those in. let's talk about our temperature trend. yesterday we did set a record with 83 degrees. the old record was 80. today we'll 83 for the high temperature. anything above 80 would be a record, because the record 80. for the weekend, not quite as warm. mid-70s for saturday as well as sunday. looking at temperatures around the area for this afternoon, we're going to top out in the 60s for most mountain towns. tough for arapahoe basin to keep that snow on the ground they've made there. keystone and wolf creek open a week from today. next week at least we'll be colder in the mountains.

80s this afternoon on the eastern plains. locations like wray, burlington, lamar could come close to 90 this afternoon. look at the cloud deck that's covering colorado. these clouds originating from the west coast. there's a storm system in california. you can see a lot of rain there. it would be great if we could get that moisture to move into our state. it's not going to happen. it's because of the jet stream. it's moving from central california into wyoming, and so a big ridge of high pressure sets up underneath the jet our weather through the weekend. as that system moves from california to wyoming over the next 24 to 36 hours, it will cool us down a little bit. that's why we'll be in the 70s this weekend and out of record territory. this may be finally the last time we see the 80s until next spring. take a look at how much snow they'll see. jackson, wyoming 4 to 8 inches. lake tahoe, 6 to 12 inches of snow. again, would be great if we could get that into our

all cats one and older free saturday through monday. tense 911 call when a young hunter trapped in a quick sand- like mud area in northern colorado tried to get help. our karen morfitt shares details. 911, what is the address of your emergency? >> i'm stuck in quick sand. every time i take a step i go farther down. >> reporter: that was the call loveland fire and rescue sp off the shore in water up to his chest and he was stuck in the mud up to about his knees. >> reporter: the teen was hunting around simpson ponds in loveland when he went into the water attempting to retrieve a duck he had shot. realizing he would not be able to get out on his own, he uses his cell phone to call for help. >> i'm slowly -- i'm not moving, but slowly going down
