the space shuttle discovery is an american treasure. it's the subject of a massive photo shoot. soon the pictures will form a 3- d image that can be accessed from anywhere in the world. we have a sneak peak at the new technology from virginia. >>reporter: the smithsonian's digital team is conducting the biggest photo shoot in the history of the national air and space museum. by the end of the process how many pictuwi have taken between 5000 and 10,000 images of the shuttle. >>reporter: designers are putting the pictures together to create a 3-d scan of the space shuttle discovery. it will look similar to this finished scan. the discovery project will detail the entire spacecraft. at 124 feet long and over 50 feet tall, that requires heavy lifting.>> the goal of this
