been in the morning recently. we'll check the temperatures and have your fiveday4cast. joel. we're watching an accident southbound along wadsworth. it's shut it down at independence. live pictures coming in from copter four. two u.s. service members dead, two others hurt after fighting the taliban in northern afghanistan. nato made the announcement overnight. leaders say the service members came under heavy fire during what they call a train, mission. this happened in the kunduz providence. afghan police say 16 civilians also died. here at home this is new for us, a state trooper survives a wild chase on i-70, but things could have been a lot worse. our jamie leary joins us live from the state patrol office in golden with the story. i understand it was a teenager behind the wheel. >> reporter: yeah, that much we do know. we're still waiting to learn

was so desperate to avoid arrest that he intentionally slammed into a state patroller's car, using what police call an amateur pit maneuver. it started before 11:00 last night. a georgetown police officer says he clocked the teen going 110 miles per hour as he flew past him headed east on i-70. the teen was slowed by traffic and pulled over by the officer. he was off again without warning. the chase started again with speeds up to 110 miles per hour. then the police officer called it off. the driver rammed his car into an unsuspecting police cruiser. the teen trying to run away. he was slowed by his injuries and taken into custody.

that miraculously ended only with minor injuries. >> the nature of what's happening in the world and people thinking it's safe to flee from the police, the driver suffered injuries. could have been much more serious. the trooper could have suffered much more serious injuries when he didn't even know he was involved in the pursuit at the time. >> reporter: the trooper fortunately was checked out on scene and he was cleared uninjured. the suspect was taken into custody and taken to the hospital where he was treated for his inri warrants out for his arrest. the investigation continues this morning. live in golden, jamie leary, cbs4 news. thank you. this is new from overnight, a driver hits and seriously injuries a man in a wheelchair in denver. it happened near colfax and franklin. medics took the injured man to the hospital and the driver did stay at the scene. fight over taking selfies with your ballots not over in

court this morning in denver. the law is to prevent voter coercion and the buying and selling of votes. critics claim the law interferes with free speech. attorneys representing the state argue there is no need to block a law that bans ballot selfies, because it's really not enforced. today donald trump and hillary clinton focus on the battleground states of florida, north carolina and pennsylvania, and this is all part of a final push with only five days left until the >> imagine having a president who demeans women, mocks the disables, insults latinos, african-americans, muslims, p.o.w.'s. >> no side tracks, donald, nice and easy. because i've been watching hillary the last few days. she's totally unhingeed. we don't want any of that. she has become unhingeed.

voting is up 139% from the same time in 2012, driven in part by some of trump's comments about latinos. let's get to weather and traffic now this morning. >> good morning to you, alan. hi, britt. good thursday morning, everybody. temperatures in the 30s and 40s around town now. coldest temps as usually is the case on the north side of town. erie 32. it's 38 at dia. 38 degrees in highlight ranch. clear sk slope to the eastern plains. we'll get to see a lot of sunshine today state-wide. there is moisture not far away from us. arizona, new mexico and especially texas. look at that big shield of rain down that way. some of that moisture will make its way into our state starting tomorrow and continuing into saturday, and even in the metro area there is the chance for seeing a shower. we'll talk about that coming up. for today it will stay dry. sunny and dry. by noon, 62 and a high of 68.

a traffic alert, we've got live pictures coming in from copter 4, southbound along wadsworth shut down at independence, the south of 100th. looks like it's a single car rollover. they're getting that car loaded up. it's onto the flat bed to move out of the way. once they do, that should clear. the one positive from all of this is that volume is so light in that area now that we're continuing to see green along the map. that's what we like let me zoom out. a tree down as you get to cherry and steele. watch out for that. on highway, no accidents, but southbound coming into town slowing down in a couple of patches that's kicking that average speed down into the upper 50s now. if you are about to get in your car, you can turn on our partners koa newsradio for the latest traffic and cbs4 weather together. thank you. happening today a decades old

in 1977 in buena vista. police now say a 17-year-old girl was murdered, they say they will reveal more on the murder with ties to trinidad coming up later on today. new this morning, there is a search for the man accused of holding up a denver walgreens at gunpoint. police say the man seen here robbed the store on south federal last month. police just released surveillance of the accused criminal. he was wearing a gray hoodie and a blue stocking cap. vandals hi church in denver again. they have gone after a political message that's on the side of that church. our shawn chitness is live this morning with reaction from church leaders. good morning, shawn. >> reporter: alan, good morning. we can see the vandalism here at the first unitarian church. a black lives matter banner covered in red paint. this isn't the first time. almost to the day a year later this church getting hit again

paint on their black lives matter sign. now, the stains from last year in 2015 when this happened are still present today, even though they organized a team to clean up the paint last year. but this time leaders say it might be more meaningful to leave the sign the way it is, serving as a reminder of the challenge they face. detectives worry about finding out who is responsible since there isn't su will, or spiritual stance on the black lives matter has infuriated someone to the point where they feel like they have to vandalize our building in the middle of the night and run away. >> reporter: we also reached out to the local chapter of black lives matter. they said they're not ready yet to comment on this latest incident. live in denver, shawn chitness,

heritage college plan to call state and local lawmakers today after it closed its doors. posted signs at the campus in lake side show the campus ran out of money. studentswonder what happens now. >> i have nothing to show for, you know, 10 weeks of class. i have absolutely nothing but a mound of debt. >> i put 15 grand into this program. where is >> an education department spokesman says students may be available for a loan discharge or credit transfer to another school. the colorado department of higher education says it is working with leaders from heritage college to try to get the students their records and to try to place them with other career colleges. there are a lot of excited cu buff fans. they take on the bruins tonight. buffs enter the game as heavy favorites. they have already accomplished

since 2007. but the buffs want a shot at playing for a pac 12 championship. tonight's game starts at 7:00. our big story this morning, the chicago cubs are world series champions for the first time in more than 100 years. here's a live look at the marquis at wrigley field. it was a different scene last night. crowds gathered around to celebrate. more fans nearby watching bars and homes poured out into the streets, after nine innings and a rain delay, series mvp zobrist puts them up in the tenth. cubs beat cleveland after being down three games to one in the series. 8the curse of the billy goat some say is broken, but manager joe madden attributes the win to skill. >> superstition has nothing to do with what's happening today.

morning news. we start with a traffic alert. live pictures from copter 4. you see the flashing lights. all of southbound wadsworth is closed just south of 100th because of this accident. good news is they have the car loaded up and hopefully that will pull out of the way shortly. until then it will be a tough drive in that southbound direction. the only positive, or bright spot i would say is about this time of day it's just such light volume that you can see

of that purple develop. alternate is u.s. 36. that's not a bad alternate about this time of day, that's a nice drive south into town. across the denver metro area, crash and stall-free on the highways this morning. the green means we're at or near posted speed limits. starting to see slowing eastbound along i-270 as we typically do this time of day. southbound coming into town, 10 minutes from thornton to denver. looking good. thanks, joel. temperatures are chilly as we still above normal. usually we're around freezing in the morning this time of year. you will notice the chill when you step outside. it's 38 degrees. sun will be up at 7:31 this morning. can you remember the last time it rained? it's been a while. 22 days now, october 12th, the last time we had measurable rainfall and it was only 0.01 inches. last time we had substantial rain was the first of july.

over half an inch. we have some rain in the forecast, but it's not much. and our one opportunity is going to be on saturday. more on that in just a moment. many mountain areas are waking up with temperatures in the 20s, including 26 in avon. 25 degrees this morning in aspen. meanwhile, 37 in burlington on the plains. 34 in pa goes is a springs. southwest corner of the state, 50s and 60s later today. 66 at durango. eagle 63. fort collins how about 70 pleasant there. laramie, wyoming, 59 today. doppler 4000 showing clear skies across colorado. we have this big stream of moisture that originates in northern mexico and moves up through the midwest and into new england, where there will be rain today. all the rain in texas, some of this moisture will make its way north toward us, because there's an area of low pressure in southern arizona that's cut off from the main flow in the atmosphere. this will come up to the four

our state. here's the plan, tomorrow night into saturday mountains will see light rain and snow. snow level will be relatively high for this time of year, about 10,000 feet. could see 2 to 4 inches. most of that falling saturday. for the front range and eastern plains, light rain is possible. most of it will be south of monument hill and on the far eastern plains. there is a slight chance for rain in denver as well as boulder and fort collins. much better chance of rain from the springs down into new mexico. 68 today with sunshine. tomorrow 70 and small chance for rain coming up on saturday. back to you guys. i think we're hopeful for any rain, thank you so much for that. the markets are hard pressed as america wonders who will be the next commander-in-chief. people are also closely watching retirement accounts after another rough day on the markets. jill wagner is live at the new york stock exchange. good morning, jill. >> reporter: good morning, britt. uncertainty surrounding the presidential election is putting a lot of investors on

day in a row. that hasn't happened in five years. dow dropped 77, nasdaq dropped 48. futures looking like it will be a higher open. investors are on edge, markets don't really like uncertainty and a donald trump win would likely bring huge changes to tax policy and trade and immigration. if you're planning to fly on thanksgiving, better book now. every day you wait will you. expected prices will jump $4 every day and about ten dollars a day in the 10 days before thanksgiving. this year's holiday toy craze is hatch moles. they're interactive toys that hatch from plastic eggs. they've sold out online, wal- mart, amazon and at most target stores. they're 50 bucks, but are going for about a thousand dollars on ebay, if you can believe it. >> the technology looks cool,

investigators in iowa trying to figure out what motivated the man they blame for the killings of two police officer yesterday. police believe scott greene used a rifle yesterday to kill the two officers. greene turned himself in after the crime. he's white, and has a history of confrontations with police, including over issues with race. the fbi has opened a civil rights investigation into church in mississippi. someone also spray painted the phrase, vote trump on the side of that church. the mayor of greenville calls the fire and graffiti a heinous, hateful and cowardly act. the pastor said the church had not made any political statements and they don't know why they were targeted there. rtd is going to have more time to iron out problems with the a line. the federal railroad

welcome back to the cbs4 morning ne traffic on the 4s. your travel forecast, south of colorado, that's where there will be rain today. especially in texas, where weather-related travel delays are possible for dallas, san antonio, possibly houston as well. chicago as they celebrate the cubs, they have fog this morning. maybe a few issues there. on the east coast some rain today, including in philadelphia where there's a ground stop program at phl. possibly delays if your flight goes in that direction. other airports looking good.

eastbound along i-270 as well. broader picture, slow southbound coming into the tech center. couple of side street trouble spots. thank you, joel. red maintain smears a political -- paint smears a political sign on a denver church and this church has dealt with vandalism before. shawn chitness is live from denver to show us that sign. good morning, shawn. >> reporter: britt, good morning. this is the side of the church on 14th avenue where anyone can see it driving by. it and red maintain strayed -- paint sprayed all over it. almost a year to the day in 2015 they had this same issue when someone decided to do that. back then they actually got a team together to clean it up, pressure wash part of it in 2015. but this time leaders say the church may leave it the way it is, keep that red paint up there so it's more meaningful and serve as a reminder of the challenge that those supporting this cause face.

stop forecast here on cbs4 mornings. >> beyond the pictures, the delivery was so on point. another mini me. though i think his delivery is better and his graphics are better than the first tv station i looked at. actually his graphics looked better. 40 degrees in denver. as we look at our view from lookout mountain, sun will be up at 7:31. will be a gorgeous day. in the mountains they're making snow, but nothing natural falling. clear skies state-wide western slope to the eastern plains later on today. high temperatures will be in the upper 60s close to 70 for denver and the front range. lower 70s on the eastern plains. most mountain towns, like frisco and avon and steamboat springs, you'll top out around 60 today. meanwhile, grand junction tops out around 68. clear skies as i mentioned across the state. as we zoom out here there's a plume of moisture moving from northern mexico that crosses texas and goes right up into the midwest and all the way up

this is the rain that caused that delay for game seven yesterday in cleveland. as we zoom in closer, this moisture over arizona, new mexico and west texas will move north thanks to this low pressure system that's currently near tucson. the low will be near the four corners region by this time tomorrow. it will weaken as it moves north, but it will spread moisture across our state, moisture we need. mountains light rain and light snow from tomorrow night through saturday. 2to 4 inches expected think we'll see much in terms of rain. springs to pueblo and trinidad, good chance of seeing beneficial rain there. that will be saturday. our rain chance here is small. today and tomorrow completely dry. small rain chance saturday followed by sunny skies on sunday. let's get a check on the traffic. here's joel. good morning. from copter 4 we're loaded up out there. it's so dark this time of day, i-70, i-225, and you can see

northbound along i-225 onto i- 70. loads up typically this time of day. i like to look at this and match up the cars who have paid to head southbound into town and those riding for free in the left lane. i think it's a good deal to stay in the left lane. southbound coming into town, 11 minutes from 120th to i-70. slow both directions along i- 270 through commerce city. westbound along i-76 we are seeing a little bit there. eastbound along i-270, and especially southbound along i- 225. northbound coming into town not too bad. c-470 nice and wide open. drive times, southbound as you make your way along i-225 from parker road out to i-25, that's 12 minutes with speeds into the teens. thanks, joel. new report out from the cdc shows the effort to get more americans insured could stall this year. the study suggests president obama's health care law may be

and assist mission. we know two other u.s. service members are injured. afghan police say 26 civilians also died. it was a state trooper and a pit maneuver showdown with a teenager and the trooper came out ahead. jamie leary is live in golden to tell us what happened last night. >> reporter: we know it was a teenager behind the wheel and he was doing everything he colorado state patrol. the chase became so dangerous at one point that law enforcement called it off. last night the teen flew past a georgetown police officer. he was headed east on i-70 clocked at 110 miles per hour. the officer caught up to him only because he was slowed down by traffic. the driver did pull over, but quickly changed his mind and took off. the chase continued reaching speeds of 120 miles per hour. that's when the officer decided

but it didn't end there. about two minutes later the suspect came upon an unsuspecting state patroller sitting in his car and he did the unthinkable. >> the driver attempted to do an amateur pit maneuver on the trooper's vehicle, crashing into the trooper's vehicle, then fleeing past him. the trooper was able to recover his vehicle. as he came off the highway, the driver crashed here at the 239 >> reporter: fortunately they were able to find the suspect. they took him into custody and then to the hospital where he was treated for minor injuries. the state patrol trooper he struck was uninjured. he was examined on scene ask found to be okay. the investigation continues this morning. live from csp headquarters in
