at last check, crews here were expecting to be able to restore water to a surrounding business and residents by about 6:00 tonight. right now, they have their hands full. you can see the huge hole they are filling in. they had to replace an 18-foot section of old piping. you can see, they had to dig the hole into the pavement. and a pipe that broke was the original which put into the ground more than a century ago. a flood gushed down sixth avenue when an underground water main burst open. crews tore a hole into the pavement and worked to repair the pipe leaving dozens of nearby residents and businesses without water. >> need a lot of water to cook so we stop cooking now. >> reporter: david had to shut down shop on little india on their busiest day of the week.

had to turn away more than 50 customers and the employees went home from work. >> it is not just a disappointmentn't to the customers. >> reporter: customers at pablo couldn't get their cup of joe. >> i am adjusting just fine. it is disappointing people count on it being here and you know, it is kind of a wakeup call. >> reporter: while workers were not able to determine the exact cause of the break, denver water officials feel it broke due do its the cast iron pipe had been there since 1890. and as you can see here, there is a piece of the new piping as the crews continue to work on filling the hole now. and, all lanes between eastbound sixth between grant and logan will be closed so best to find another work. the work is expect today be done some time in the overnight

this is news breaking now at 5:00. some cities gearing for a third straight night of protests over the outcome of the presidential race. this is the scene in minneapolis. >> reporter: hundreds of students walked out of class here in denver an marched along federal boulevard to show their disdain of president-elect donald trump. >> the students say they just want to be heard. >> reporter: that is right karen. the students i spoke with tell me donald trump is the president- elect. though they cannot vote, they wanted their voice to be heard on the issue. >> hey, hey, donald trump has got to go. >> reporter: students say this is what democracy looks like. letting your voice be heard. >> people are scared to be deported. >> reporter: they walked out en masse to protest donald trump as next president.

immediately and pass his own executive order. one thing he can't do without congress is repeal and replace obama care. and based on the interview he just did with 60 minutes, he doesn't want to repeal all of cigarette when you replace it, are you going to make sure people with preconditions are still covered in. >> yes. because it happened to be one of the strongest assets. >> you will keep that? >> yes. always with the children living with their parents for an extended period. try to keep that in. it adds cost, but much something we will try to keep. >> and there is going to be a period if you repeal it and before you replace it when millions of people could lose it. >> we will do it at the same time. lit be just fine. it's what i do. i do a good job. i am going to repeal it and replace it. >> they don't have a supermajority to repeal obama care. but they can dismantle many of the key provisions.

and mccasla exits. he says a car pulled up next to him and suddenly, the window shattered. the victim has minor injuries. the shooter is believed to be driving and older white toyota or honda sedan. a fire causes an estimated $100,000 in damage to a lakewood home. happened this morning. flames started in the garage, destroyed a car and spread to the room above it. they say it was caused rags tossed in the trash that come busted. firefighters this afternoon quickly put out a small brush fire at 58 and mcintire. no word on how this started. today marks veteran's day. a day to mark the achievements of those who served our country. a group of flag wavers

tech center. fort logan is honoring veterans. the ceremony area at the cemetery is being renovated. so, this year, the vets and their father and motherlies gathered at the vfw hall where michael wiliness reflected on what it mean to be a veteran. >> veterans are just regular men and women with one crucial distinction. when the nation need them, they put aside their own dreams and answered the ca soldier or an airman or a marine or a sailor or in the coast guard. >> president obama marked his final veteran's day as president at arlington national cemetery. the commander-in-chief praising the u.s. armed forces. calling them a unifying force after a divisive campaign. >> when the election is over as we search for ways to come together, to reconnect with one another, some of our best

the eagles suffered punctured wounds and a cracked beak. if all goes well, she should be released back into the wild in the next six weeks. new tonight, the need for food in colorado's mountains. food banks are pushed to the limits these days. matt kroschel live in summit county for us. so maths, why all of a sudden? >> reporter: karen, it has to do with all the seasonal workers coming to work at the mountains and they are finding their jobs just are not there yet. that is because the resorts haven't been able to open due to a lock a lack of snow. >> we have seen our food bank numbers double. >> reporter: empty shelves, overstretched staffs as dozens of seasonal workers still waiting on a paycheck come peer looking for help. >> a lot of the liftoffs, people that have just moved to town thinking that their job is going to be starting and the resorts have to do what they have to do. >> reporter: anita here at the family intercultural research

anticipate some need this timer year ever but this year is different. >> many are challenged to get the first paycheck. so the first two weeks of november is all busy for us. but what is concerning about this year is the start dates for a lot of resort employees is unknown at this point. >> reporter: places like copper mountain and keystone, breaking ridge, all forced to push back opening days. >> people will be challenged to keep food on the table. >> reporter: help is on the way though. and a food drive planned for saturday should help. >> when in and use this smaller pantry, the shelves empty out pretty quickly. the fortunate thing is colorado mountain express and vail resorts are doing their annual drive. >> reporter: much relief for mountain resort workers feeling the impact of this season's lack of snow. you can always help out here at this food pantry, the one in breckenridge. you can stop by and drop off any donation.

short times. we are live in silverthorn tonight, matt kroschel, cbs4 mountain news room. safeway donated 412 turkeys to the mission drive. they hope to have 15,000 to feed the hungry and homeless. ed greene steps in now. what is the weekend forecast ed? >> looks pretty good jim. we started off today cooling 70 degrees over yesterday. but that is still n above normal this time of year. a couple of flurries and snow showers. that is all we are sighing in the mountains. a little cloudiness. that is the cooling we saw today. stayed in the 60s . you can see the stationary front and the warmer air behind it wash over the state the next several days. the difference between what we saw yesterday at this time is now is only 3 degrees difference at dia. we had begun to cool off when the map was done. you can see they are much warmer down in the southeast,

it will be in the 20s and 30s tonight in the eastern plains. 20s higher up. west, 30s to near 40 degrees. then tomorrow, we start the warmup once again. we will see 60s over the eastern plains. we will find 40s and 50s with a few 60s . higher elevations. and out west, temperatures mostly in the 50s to the mid 60s . okay, here is the denver forecast. boy, wait until you see the five day. 35 and 33 with mostly clear skies. tomorrow, mostly and we approach that 70-degree mark as we take a look at the five day. 68 on saturday. 67 on sunday. look at monday, tuesday, 74 degrees. wednesday, 73. and those are temperatures we normally find in late september. >> let's call off winter at this point. >> i think we already have. >> it is a good point. the colorado avalanche looking to break a five game losing streak. hopefully tonight. >> and despite giving up nearly 20 goals over that stretch, we
