police to stop men in a violent crime spree. >> think twice porch pirates. police have a trick to stop package thieves. >> if cdot gets etc. way, we will pay a new tax to drive. >> you pay what you drive. >> and president-elect trump warms up to obama care. >> very much try to keep that. >> developing now at 10:00, a search for men believed to be behind a violent crime spree. lauren dispirito is live in colorado springs tonight. lauren, it is possible some of those suspects have been caught. >> reporter: there are two men that were found tonight. police had been staging their search here. and, they believe those two men are part of this violent spree. but they are still looking for two men. and they say in all this, two victims, innocent men, were

when police responded to a home invasion. two men tell our partners at kktv a group of men forced them at gunpoint into their home. demanding car keys and stealing cash. it was only when one of them told suspects his mother was sleeping inside that the group showed mercy. still, leaving them in their garage with their hands bound, stealing their two vehicles. >> they are considered incredibly dangerous and they are armed. >> reporter: according to kktv, the suspects th a gun shop but quickly fled. it is after that stop that police spotted one of the stolen vehicles and start to pursue it. the suspects fired at officers. none were hit and police lost sight of the suspects. they later recovered both stolen vehicles. >> these folks were calculated and they were very directed in their contact.

tonight. still unable to find two of the men they were looking for. no one was hurt. live in colorado springs, lauren dispirito, cbs4 news. and happening now, the anti- trump protest growing more intense in some cities. in miami, the crowd stormed busy i-95 closing that highway. you recall, we saw a similar scene on i-25 in denver last night. now to atlanta where protesters closed a street and started a bonfire. police blocked the group and are trying to push them back. the protests were much smaller and younger in denver today. high school students staged a walkout, walked up and down federal. they are too young to vote, but want their voices heard. meanwhile, the president-elect appears ready to compromise on one of his big campaign promises. in his first tv interview, he tells 60 minutes he wants to keep parts of obama care. >> let me ask you about obama

for the suspect. you can see at least a half dozen cop cars here. this area is shut down for a block. and we understand that the shooting happened almost a block from our location. all the way down by that stop sign. right now, denver police have not made any arrests and they are still trying to get information on the suspect that was involved in this shooting. and we have seen officers going from door to door in this neighborhood trying to speak with anyone who might have been a witness or heard this shooting to try to get any information. ac some of the officers right now going from door to door trying to find any information. so, we are still waiting for an update from denver police on who might have been involved and how many people were involved. but when we have that information, we will give it to you. for now, we are live. back to you. >> thank you stan. a penny for your thoughts. how about a penny for your miles? cdot is considering charges colorado drivers by the mile. it is is a controversial proposal. andrea flores spoke with cdot. what kind of money are we

did some math and the proposed pay by a mile tax for this fuel efficient car would be 42 cents more than this suv compared to what drivers are paying right now. but cdot says this proposal could help level the playing field between all vehicles. a new cdot research study could change the way you pay to get around. >> a primary way we pay for our roads is through a gas tax. that gas tax is dying keeping up with all of our growth. >> reporter: reports show colorado's current 40-cent gas tax isn't keeping up with the times. >> gas tax has been something that served us well the last 100 years but the reality is, technology in vehicles, that is changing. >> reporter: as an alternative, cdot is working on a pilot that would charge drivers a penny a mile. >> we pay as many miles as you travel on the road. >> reporter: with an $800

vehicles are doing little to help. >> they are driving on a road that has to be kept up. if we don't have the fund to do that right now, we will be in a significant challenge. >> reporter: the pilot will also look at differences between rural and urban drivers. >> rural drivers tend to drive long distances and take less trips but urban drivers take a lot of trips and travel less distances. it is about fairness. >> reporter: now, cdot is applications for drivers interested in this pilot program to see how the tax could affect your vehicle. head to our website, cbsdenver.com. reporting live in denver, andrea flores, cbs4 news. right now, road repairs are still going after a water main broke just south of downtown today. dozens of businesses and homes were left without water. for the pipe burst beneath zings avenue between grant and logan, workers had to cut out and replace an 18-foot section

in 1890. officials believe it simply died of old age. with the holidays approaching, shoppers are placing online orders. thieves know this. denver police just posted surveillance videos on their facebook page. tonight, karen morfitt is live in denver, karen, the cops say the porch pirates had better think twice. >> reporter: because you never know when that package might going as far as leaving their own gift inside. we see it time and time again. thieves watching, waiting, and then stealing packages right off the front steps of homes just about everywhere. year after year. >> my wife has actually pulled into the garage the exact moment the guy was on the porch. >> reporter: to combat the brazen crimes, some are arming themselves with home security

>> if a thief approaches a package, we might be watching too. >> reporter: to ensure the success of the program, they are keeping the details on how the boxes are tracked to themselves. but, with more than 23 million americans falling victim to porch pirates last year alone, they are not the only department using that tactic. >> our packages, we deploy them throughout the city. they contain gps tracking devices this them. >> reporter: still, denver police say the best protection online or have gifts delivered should plan for every circumstance. >> have packages shipped to their workplace. have them shipped to a family member, a trusted friend or member who is likely to be home. there are shipping options that can help. >> reporter: now, you can also track your package to make sure that you are home when it is delivered. also, you can require a signature so if you can't be, you make sure it is not left on your doorstep. we are live in denver tonight,

hospital after a shooting near 31st. i should say martin luther king and filmore. an active scene. officers going door to door. we will have the latest developments for you tomorrow morning. it is adding insult to injury. tonight, there are new developments in the case of a career college that suddenly closed down last month. this month, some heritage college students are reporting that refund checks they received from the school are now bouncing. rick sallinger has been following this he has the latest developments. >> reporter: when heritage college un expectedly shut its doors it did more than leave students and staff out in the cold. dawn brown was close to getting her degree. she had received a check from heritage more than a thousand dollars she thought was due her. but she said the check bounced. >> i'm really upset of course. but i'm not the only one this

other students and it has affected teachers as well. they have checks that bounced. >> reporter: the notice on the door said it closed due to declining student enrollment. and less demand at for profit colleges. >> if they were going to go under, they should have let the students know. >> reporter: her attempts to get answers from the college have gotten her nowhere. so she went inside to the officers to see if anyone could help her. >> i want to know if my check bounced. >> reporter: the response she received was to check a website. th threaten to call the police. dawn brown's hopes of starting her own aesthetic spa business now seems a dream much harder to realize. >> it is just going to take a a little bit now. >> reporter: the school did not reply to our request for a response. rick sallinger, cbs4 news. on this veteran's day, americans honor the men and women who served our country. now because of the renovation work at the cemetery, fort

englewood. there are 22 million living americans who have served our nation in uniform. meanwhile, some vets are concerned about access to the new va hospital in aurora. due to open in 2015. and veterans will be able to new r line light rail to get there. but as of now, the 300-yard walk from the rail stop to the hospital entrance is uncovered. and involves crossing busy potomac street. >> patients who the hospital are going to use the rtd corridor and we didn't provide a way for them to get into the hospital. >> he is pushing for the addition of a raised covered walk way. estimates it would add about $7 million to the $1.6 billion it cost to build the hospital. happening now, the search for a man accused of starting at least 20 wild fires in north carolina around georgia. the fires have burned more than 25 square miles on national

several of the fires started. extreme drought conditions are not helping. the latest in the case of a suspected serial killer in south carolina. there he is. and we are now hearing from todd kohlhepp's mother. her son is facing four counts of murder in connection with a quadruple homicide in 2003. he confessed to those crimes after police found this woman chained to a storage container on his property recently. three bodies were buried there. in an interview with cbs's 48 hours, kohlhepp's mother says her son is misunderstood. >> todd is not a monster. he is not even close to it. he wasn't doing it for enjoyment. he was doing it because he was mad and hurt. >> 48 hours looking into the case of the real estate broker turned suspected serial killer tomorrow night at 9:00. all right, let's get to ed

same old story, we have a few high clouds around. no other weather problems. seven degrees from yesterday. sand that is still seven degree above normal this time of the year, we were still in the 60s . as we take a look at the big picture, there is our cool front. already, this high pressure system clock wise flow is grabbing some of that warm air and pushing it into the state. and this is becoming a warm front that will wash over. we will warm temperatures up nicely the next several days. wait until you see the five day and plus four more fo sitting off here. you see the flow still going up over that high pressure ridge. i think that is where this storm goes. but, this is the one out there getting into the gulf of alaska that might come into our mountains and bring the mountains some real snow. maybe up to a half foot of snow in some places. maybe rain or snow here. that is yet to be determined. everybody is talking about the super moon. go out sunday or monday night. after sunset.
