a car as it was rolling down i- 25. the chase ended near 37th and broadway. >> that is where andrea flores joins us live. that suspect evaded the police, but not for long. >> reporter: well, that's right. police found the suspect in the middle of this car dealership hiding underneath a truck with a fully loaded gun. federal heights police sergeant frank apartment complex with a history of stolen vehicles. >> i noticed a black honda vehicle backed into a parking space but the vehicle didn't have any front license plate on it and the grill was missing. >> reporter: a parking space all too familiar for the sergeant. >> i recovered several vehicles from that area. >> reporter: the driver, 26-

federal heights to i-25 south. >> he ended up pulling over to the right shoulder of the roadway. and, actually got out of the vehicle as it was still moving and took off on foot. i was able to get into the car and pull the emergency break to stop it rolling any further. >> reporter: they found the driver hiding under a truck at a dealership off 73rd and broadway. >> chasing after one mane, he has a gun in his hand. >> the gun was ll the gun, six in the magazine clip with the gun. and one in the chamber. so it was ready to go. >> reporter: luckily, the suspect surrendered before anyone was hurt. >> it could have been a lot worse. >> reporter: now, federal heights pd tells me the driver faces auto theft, possession of a weapon,ened reckless driving charges. andrea flores, cbs4 news.

two homes in lakewood. happened early this morning on south almond street near the main reservoir. at least 30 firefighters battled to get the flames under control. in the end, five people were forced from their homes. the blaze started in the storage shed between the two homes. it is not clear what sparked the fire. we are learning new information about a brush fire that briefly threatened home ins adams county. the fire broke out after 2:00 this afternoon and it took crews nearly three hours to bring it where it all happened east of brighton. and dillon, we understand today's weather conditions complicated fire fighting efforts. >> reporter: well, you know it is really cold out right now. dry conditions and shrubbery like this continues to burn off. in the distance behind me, behind some of these hills it started off as a small brush fire. a small weed fire. but it quickly blew up into 300 acres.

high winds earlier today. it is no secret how dry colorado has been. the fire department says a three-mile long stretch of dry pasture was burned torching a quarter mile wide route. some hot spots continue to burn according to the neighborrings however the brighton fire department says the fire is completely contained and they say as well that the fire does have a few hot spots. now, some neighbors say they were heavily concerned by the response today saying not only did they find out about the fire over felt dispatch did not know exactly where to send the responding crews. one family says they joined the efforts to handle the situation at first because they did not see any firefighters on the horizon. >> the animals and the livestock, and a bunch of neighborhood tractors from that neighborhood came down here and all these country folks put that fire out. >> reporter: now, that same woman says there are several different horses who belonged

in nearby neighbor's houses for safety reasons. more than 300 acres burned due to a small weed fire that grew out of control. when asked what caused the blaze, the sheriffs office said they could not comment. neighbors say they heard it might have been someone doing target practice with one of their firearms causeing the fire. live in brighton, dillon thomas, cbs4 news. let's go to meteorologist dave aguilera in the colorado weather sentedder. we are anxiously awaiting >> we desperately need it. and the weather pattern may be changing. we may have rain and snow in the forecast but it will take a while to get there. tomorrow, tuesday, wednesday, the fire danger will be elevated and temperatures and a riddle wind around here as well. today, we were above normal. 66 in denver, and greeley, 64 in boulder and fort collins came in at 68. i want to take you through wednesday. tuesday, we will be, wednesday will be warm.

flakes falling. donald trump's transition in the white house. the president-elect sat down with 60 minutes to share his plans on the presidency. marriage equality, abortion rights. he had a message for protester who's continue to hit the streets in demonstrations across the nation. in his first television interview as president-elect, donald trump told 60 minutes he will not challenge marriage equality and he plans to appoint pro life judges to supreme court. >> if roe versus wade would go back to the states. >> some women wouldn't be able to. >> perhaps, they will have to go to another state. >> reporter: trump also acknowledged he is relying on lobbyists on his transition team. >> they know the system right now. but we are going to faze that out. we have to. >> reporter: on sunday, trump announced two key appointments. chairman of the republican

and right wing media mogul steven bonnon will be his strategist. protests against trump spread across the country. for the fifth day. in his interview with 60 minutes, trump asked protesters not to fear his presidency. >> we are going to bring our country back. certainly do not be afraid. >> reporter: he also has a message for those accused of harassing minorities. >> they are muslims. >> i am so, saddened to hear that and i say stop it. stop it. if it helps, i will say this. i will say to the camera. stop it. >> reporter: trump also said he will not accept the $400,000 salary that comes with the office of the president. trump's attorneys delayed a motion on a class action lawsuit against trump university that says he failed

teaching. trump's attorneys want to postpone the trial until after the inauguration to allow the president-elect to focus on the transition to the white house. after days of protests against donald trump in colorado, hundreds came together to rally for unity. people gathered at civic center park. this was meant to promote proses and equality. >> we don't want to bring fear to the neighborhood or disrupt the city's life. but we also need to fight for our rights. >> organizers told us they wa denver's peaceful rally to be an example for the country. happening now, new zealand is cleaning up after a powerful earthquake rocked the country. >> the whole house was moving. >> up next, a look at the damage. >> plus, a california deputy is killed in the line of duty. why investigators say he was ambushed. >> developing now, a fire started intentionally, destroys a home in idaho springs. why the owner says he lost a lot more just in building.

at 7.8 magnitude quake damaged buildings and cut off access to at least one region. residents along the coast were told to move to higher ground due to the threat of a potential tsunami. at least two people were killed but the death poll is expected to rise. tonight, a sheriff's department in california is in mourning after a deputy was killed in the line of duty. it happened today in central california. deputy dennis wallace had been checking a suspicious van when he was shot twice in the head. investigators say ambushed. >> within seconds, he was murdered. he was executed. >> investigators say after the shooting the gunman went on a crime spree. police finally caught him 150 miles away. the suspect has been identified as david machado. he was wanted on a felony warrant. deputy wallace was a 20 year police veteran and he leaves behind a wife and children. two information on the death of leon russell.

after a fire in idaho springs. a three story house burned to the ground. as melissa garcia tell us us, the homeowner lost a lot more than just a structure. >> very talented carver. >> reporter: as volunteer firefighters spray water onto the dirt, the sunday light exposed 2 charred carvings made by dave shelton. he has photo after photo of what appear to be decades of intricate guitars, totem poles and figures ruined in a fire that was destroyed. >> sorry dave lost his house. you cannot express your feelings you had about that. >> reporter: plumber worried the flames would make their way down the entire mountain. >> then something like this happens it is traumatic for everybody. >> reporter: it didn't luckily.

the person who set the blaze with a heavy conscience. >> if he had not call saying i set this fire, we all might be looking at the flames. >> reporter: they took one person into custody, but have not yet released his identity. >> what would possess somebody to burn somebody's house down? something you had built yourself? dave will redo fer from this. dave is a strong person. he will recover from this. and, as strong as you can be when you lost everything you own. >> reporter: melissa garcia, cbs4 news. springs is on a mission to find whoever shot their cat. the cat expected to be okay. but now animal law enforcement officials are stepping in. the family says the cat was shot with a pellet gun and the pellet hit its windpipe. she was found by her four-year- old owner. >> he said the cat had blood. so i walked over to where she was. and she didn't look well. and, she was kind of wheezing.

morning. it will be closest at 6:52 in the morning tomorrow. but it will just be close to the mountains getting ready to set behind the mountains so you may want to get a look at it tonight. and, it will be bright again tomorrow night if you wanted to get out and look at it. just won't be the official full moon tomorrow night. and, the next time this will happen will be 2034. it hasn't been this bright since 1948. pretty good view out there. >> and the clouds cleared another we had some snow in the mountains. those are moving on out. a little cloudiness moving in from wyoming. but that won't be a big deal. here is what happening. the low front coming through. the high will resurge back into central rockies pulling in a few of the clouds with it during the course of the morning hours but it will also bring back a little heat wave between now and wednesday. we turn our attention to that front in washington. and oregon. that is the leading edge of a big trough of low pressure that

with snow overnight thursday into friday morning right here in denver. ahead of us, it will get a little breezy. tomorrow, it will be breezy in the foothills. the mountains. nothing too crazy and the same thing on tuesday. we will have a few light breezes in denver. buns we get closer to the front making its way toward the central rockies, the winds will ramp up on wednesday. take a look at some of the r razreadings. that is 3:00 in the afternoon. we have to move in because of fire danger. 66 the high today at the airport. 67 downtown. still not too shabby. we cooled down a little bit. 45 downtown out there right now. a little colder at the airport, 36 already. and wayne gallagher has 39 in aurora. here is a look now at the futurecast. clearing skies tonight. we will wake up with sunshine tomorrow. pretty much with a few clouds

sunshine all day tomorrow. we are in pretty good shape there. now, as far as temperature goes tonight with the clearing skies we will dip down into the 30s and the 20s . tomorrow, 70s and 60s here. 50s in the mountains. 60s and 50s on the western slope. new, 70 for the high tomorrow. so, a nice way to start 2 week with sunshine. and if you like 70s we have a few of those for you. mid 70s on tuesday and wednesday. 62 on thursday as rain develops. might have a little into friday. and friday, 42. at this point, doesn't look like a ton of moisture. and i think you don't have to get the snow blower out. and we get back to the sunshine. back to the 50s and the 60s over the following week. but what you notice is a little cooling trend. >> a little fall change. >> all right,. >> thank you dave. outfits from a galaxy far, far away are on display at the denver art museum. >> the new star wars an the power of costume exhibit opened
