hi, everybody. 4:30. this is the news, tuesday november 15th. i'm alan gionet. >> am britt moreno. thanks for joining us. tuesday is bringing another pretty nice day, but there is a change on the way this good morning. good morning, britt. good tuesday morning, alan. big, big changes for the end of the week. today and tomorrow near record high temperatures. it's looking increasingly likely we could tie the record for today, which is 78 degrees. right now we're at 49. yes, there's just a bit of a chill in the air. compared to a normal february morning, it's mild. temperatures in the 50s

boulder, 57 degrees there right now. greeley is at 32. 39 fort collins. most mountain areas either in the 20s or 30s. doppler 4000 showing very little happening now. a few clouds today, that's it. meanwhile, here on the northwest coast of the country, that's our storm system getting organized for the end of the week. today, nothing but sunshine. 9:00a.m., 56. noon 73 and there it is, 78, 78 for the high temperature on the 15th of november. that would be enough record set on this date in 1942. more is straight ahead, but now let's get a check of traffic with joel. feels like spring break, doesn't it? southbound coming into town, nice and wide open. that's what we're seeing across the denver area. look at all that green. relief for drivers everywhere. thank you, joel. denver officials say it is time

homeless because the sidewalks downtown are becoming a health hazard. the camps are filling the sidewalks in the ballpark neighborhood. the city has is has enough beds in city shelters to house the homeless. according to the group denver's road home, most of those on the street are refusing services. people who work downtown are responding to the homeless camps. >> sometimes it's a little scary to walk bunch of people. you see some shady things, syringes or what have you. >> we can probably come up with a better solution than that. i know people recently coming to town want a nice, spotless city. humans do have rights. >> reporter: well, back in march city crews did a similar sweep. people in the neighborhood also say they think the camps will

eventually return. president obama is in greece this morning on his first trip to that country in his final overseas tour officially during his administration. this is part of a three-nation tour. he's scheduled to hold talks with greece's president and prime minister. he'll then head to germany, then across the ocean to peru, during a seven-day trip. today president-elect donald trump low pressure vice president elect mike pence with city. the secret service is vetting residents and employees at trump power as they work to provide security. here's our hena daniels with the latest on possible appointments to the new administration. >> reporter: a campaign source tells cbs news rudy giuliani is favored to serve as secretary of state in donald trump's new administration. speaking at a "wall street journal" forum in washington last night, the former new york

priebus. president-elect trump has nearly 4,000 jobs to fill in his administration before he takes the oath of office in january. hena daniels, cbs news. >> john bolton is also said to be in contention for the job as trump's secretary of state. 36-year-old charlene voight was reported missing july 8th. her family had not heard from her for now it's been months. yesterday littleton police took the investigation to the tower landfill in commerce city. search teams geared up in protective suits and began sifting through an isolated area of the landfill. several agencies are involved and they say this could take weeks, even months to complete. >> we are looking for anything related to this case, whether it's evidence in the case, evidence in her disappearance,

on how americans are spending for the holiday season. if you're driving for thanksgiving this year, aaa projects 48.7 million americans will travel 50 miles or more, a million more than last year. vegas and san francisco are the top in big macs. happening now, a new scam targeting homeowners. it starts with a post it note left on a front door, a message from a fictional company called metro delivery saying you missed a delivery and need to call people -- you need to call the number on the post-it. the people who do call have been asked for personal

>> if you were to give them your personal identifying information, they could use that information, open up an account in your name. they can purchase stuff under your name. >> legitimate delivery companies already have all the information that they need. how much are you recycling, really, now? >> good question. a public interest watch group says denver is doing a lousy job. our kelly werthmann has the bad details. >> we have recycled. leaves. >> reporter: when it comes to recycling, denver is basically garbage. >> denver's recycling rate is 18%. it's one of the lowest in the country. >> reporter: the national recycling rate average is 34%. a pair of nonprofit groups say denver is so wasteful because there aren't enough recycling options. >> about a third of residents in denver live in apartment buildings with seven or more

have to offer recycling options. >> reporter: solutions are cutting fees for composting, providing more access and financial incentives for recycling. >> the recommendations from the report are actually pretty much in line with the city recommendations. >> reporter: denver solid waste management's charlotte pitt says the city is working on a plan to recycling rates. >> we're trying to buck that system. >> denver is taking steps in the right direction, but we needed to more, more quickly. >> faster means money. so i think the city is investing in the resources we need, but it is a slow process. >> that was kelly werthmann reporting for us. as for apartment recycling, the city says it's basically a free market, but after an ordinance was put in place last year, denver has been able to collect data to see how commercial

evacuations for the first time in 30 years. rescue crews are now trying to get hundreds of tourists and homeowners stranded. military helicopters are being put to use as well as a u.s. navy ship. these cattle are no longer stranded by the aftermath of the earthquake. trapped for hours in a tiny bluff, after the land around them collapsed. farmer and helpers da to get the two cows and calf to safety. >> many people were worried about that. let's get over to ashton, figure out what the tuesday forecast is holding for us. i cannot believe it's 50 degrees this morning. >> yeah, i know. 50 at cbs4. 44down the street at city park. it's very mild. and we still have a spectacular view of our almost full supermoon. it was at its biggest and brightest point last night.

this, especially with a cell phone, but it is quite the sight to see. one of those things you really have to go outside and see in person. just a couple of clouds along the front range. as we zoom up, we see some rain, even snow over washington state. it's a storm system starting to make its way towards the pacific northwest. here's the storm, still spinning closer to the gulf of alaska than seattle at this point. it's moving towards us and as it does it will spread snow into the the later part of this week. we're talking tomorrow night, wednesday night into thursday. we still anticipate the heaviest snowfall with this system to be in wyoming and montana, where you see the purple near yellowstone national park. for us we'll take anything we can get. for many of our mountain areas, especially northwest facing slopes, since the storm will be coming in from the northwest, we should see significant accumulation, over 6 inches certainly. denver and the front range it's

around here during the daytime thursday. there could be something tomorrow night, but i think there will be more thursday, especially late in the day thursday. and it's possible that that precipitation will start as cold rain and briefly change over to light snow. even in denver coming up late in the day thursday. any kind of accumulation will be minor. this is not going to be a big storm system for denver and the front range. will have more of an impact on the high country. 20s and 30s now in the high country. as britt said, we're in the 50s for some 50 dia. 55 in boulder. it's hard to believe we're in the middle of november. later on today upper 70s. some places could actually conceivably hit 80 today. that's how warm it will be, especially to the southeast part of the state, la junta, lamar, the best chance of hitting 80 down there. tomorrow our last warm day, 76.

>> reporter: fentanyl is making headlines almost daily. it killed prince, it's what rocky allen stole from hospitals risking exposure of hiv to patients. this mom is overdosing on it inside a store. it went viral on social media. it also sent 11 connecticut cops to the hospital. it's why police across the country are being warned. >> they know that what have is potentially deadly. >> reporter: an east coast narcotics officer is traveling the country. >> the guys selling the truck laced with fentanyl are using our people addicted to drugs as

opiate. >> it's a thousand times stronger than morphine. >> reporter: it's airborne and can be absorbed into your body through the skin or touch. >> as lawmaker law enforcement we have to worry about it and firefighters. >> reporter: it's a danger to any medical responder. it's even dangerous to you, a good samaritan who might help a person. >> being such a small chemical because it's so powerful and you can't see it most of the time. >> reporter: the head of the dea released this video urging officers not to field test it. >> transport it directly to a laboratory where it can be safely handled and tested. >> reporter: these police officers almost died in new jersey. while sealing an evidence back, they were exposed. >> i felt like my body was

>> reporter: the colorado drug investigation association says we're leaning on the edge of an epidemic. heroin is leading to fentanyl. >> fentanyl is a more potent high than morphine or heroin abuse. >> fentanyl is morphine on steroids. >> reporter: jennifer brice, cbs4 news. colorado rapids have announced tim howard undergo season ending surgery thursday. howard was injured in friday's world cup qualifier. the rapids will begin the western conference finals against seattle a week from tomorrow. speaking of seattle, cu hosting seattle last night, taking part in the legends classic. we pick it up in the second half. derek white with the bucket. he led with 15. josh fortune had a really good all around game. 12points and seven boards.
